De Gruyter Thematic Threads in the Book of the Twelve
Book SynopsisFor some years the view has become established that the Book of the Twelve is a systematically structured literary unity. An exegesis which takes the final canonical text seriously undertakes to understand the structure and theological intention of this unity. The papers collected here attempt to reveal significant structures which overarch the individual components. Particular emphasis is placed on the reconstruction of thematic threads which are created when individual prophets take up topics from their predecessors (e.g. Jehovah's Day, conversion, role of the peoples) and intensify them. The papers were written between 1999 and 2002 under the aegis of the Society of Biblical Literature's Working Group on The Formation of the Book of the Twelve.Trade Review"The papers in this book are of highest academic quality, and they are essential reading for a scholar interested in doing serious work on the Minor Prophets. This book is highly recommended."Kevin Mellish in: Religious Studies Review 4/2007 "Der Sammelband leistet einen wertvollen Beitrag zur Forschung. Die Vielfalt der behandelten Themen samt den sich ergebenden Querbeziehungen zwischen Artikeln mit unterschiedlicher hermeneutischer und/oder methodischer Grundausrichtung kann zu einer Fulle von neuen Fragen und Fragestellungen anregen."Ruth Scoralick in: Biblische Zeitschrift 1/2005Table of ContentsOverview: Paul L. Taylor & Francis Ltd The Personification of Wisdom Society for Old
Book SynopsisThis book examines the personification of Wisdom as a female figure - a central motif in Proverbs, Job, Sirach, Wisdom and Baruch. Alice M. Sinnott identifies how and why the complex character of Wisdom was introduced into the Israelite tradition, and created and developed by Israelite/Jewish wisdom teachers and writers. Arguing that by personifying Wisdom the authors of Proverbs responded to Israel''s defeat by Babylon and the loss of Davidic monarchy, and by retrieving and transforming the Wisdom figure the authors of Sirach, Baruch and Wisdom responded to the spread of Hellenism and the potential loss of identity for Jews. Sinnott concludes that personified Wisdom functioned to reinterpret and transform the Israelite/Jewish tradition.Trade Review'There is a great deal of scholarship here, and this book offers a good introduction both to the texts and the literature. The style is clear and accessible.' Stewart Weeks, Durham University 'This rich study is valuable for its breadth of coverage of diverse biblical writings and its depth of scholarship on the particular chosen texts. While offering the fruits of deep research, this volume is concisely written... I recommend this book for colleges where the Old Testament wisdom literature or feminist theology is studied.' Scripture Bulletin '... carefully researched work... The bibliographical coverage up until 1995 is extensive, and those reading and working in this field will be indebted to [the author] for providing such a clear and concise account of previous scholarship... takes its place among the resources available to those wishing to engage with this contribution of the wisdom scribes not only to Israel, but also to Christian and Jewish understandings of God.' Colloquium 'Sinnot does a good job in helping us to see how Wisdom is depicted as the active and saving presence of God in the world.' Letter and Spirit ’This is a fine study of the essential repertoire of biblical texts in which Wisdom personified features...’ Intenational Review of Biblical StudiesTable of ContentsContents: Introduction; Origins of personified wisdom; Wisdom responds to a crisis; Wisdom, where shall she be found?; Wisdom: an enduring heritage; Personified wisdom as saviour; Conclusion; Bibliography; Index.

Cambridge University Press The Last Twelve Verses of Mark 25 Society for New Testament Studies Monograph Series Series Number 25
Book SynopsisA study of the authenticity and interpretation of the last twelve verses of St Mark's Gospel. These verses are omitted from at least one important manuscript tradition and queried in most modern translations (though not from the NEB). Professor Farmer traces the history of the text tradition for omission back to Egypt, and argues that one important factor contributing to their omission was the dangerous teaching they seemed to contain: they appear to encourage Christians to handle deadly snakes and drink poisons to prove their faith, a practice which has been revived today by some Christian sects who accept the scriptural authority of these verses. The teaching of these verses has, however, never become established in orthodox Christianity and indeed most Christians are unaware of their doctrinal significance. Professor Farmer reviews all the textual and patristic evidence and examines the most plausible solutions that have been canvassed. This is another substantial contribution to a Table of ContentsPreface; Abbreviations; Part I. The External Evidence: 1. The witness of Eusebis; 2. The witness of Jerome; 3.
