Book SynopsisHow did the Bible get translated into English and made available to English-speaking people? The Bible in English tells the dramatic story of these events, and of the human costs involved. In this concise yet thorough study, John Long answers the above questions, exploring the lives and deaths of John Wycliffe and William Tyndale and explaining their roles in translating the Latin Vulgate and the New Testament, respectively. Long discusses the Roman Catholic Church''s resistance to translation of the scriptures from Latin into English and other languages, and he shows which parts of Tyndale''s translation endured to appear in the King James, Revised Standard, American Standard, New American Standards, New King James, and other translations of the Bible in English. This easy-to-read, comprehensive book is a fascinating study of a dramatic time in the Bible''s history.Trade Review...Long's humility is admirable. -- . * Bible Editions and Versions, May 2008 *This is an instructive book. . . * Concordia Theological Quarterly *

University Press of America The Primeval Revelation in Myths and in Genesis A

Book SynopsisIn this provocative study, Zimmerman examines the creation myths of traditional cultures and compares them to Genesis in terms of symbolic content. While the Old Testament in general has only vague references to life in heaven, the myths discuss the notion of an after-life in a more vivid manner. Zimmerman makes the novel claim that Genesis and the creation myths of hunter-gatherers have a common source in the primeval revelation made by God. In this sense, Genesis owes much of its content to a revelation that has been kept alive by hunter-gatherers. Zimmerman also revisits the debate between fundamental creationists and evolutionists, contending that the Bible does not teach science but sacred doctrine.Table of Contentschapter 1 Echoes of the Primeval Revelation chapter 2 Lifestyles of Hunter-gatherers chapter 3 Hunter-gatherers in Tierra Del Fuego chapter 4 The Lenape Worship the Supreme Being chapter 5 The Happy Hunting Ground chapter 6 Creation Myths Around the Globe chapter 7 Global Recognition of the Supreme Being chapter 8 Creation in Genesis chapter 9 The Six Days chapter 10 The Garden of Eden chapter 11 The Original Sin chapter 12 Genesis During the Babylonian Exile chapter 13 The Bible and Science chapter 14 A Salute to Adam and Eve chapter 15 From Adam to Christ chapter 16 References chapter 17 Index

University Press of America The Redeemed Image of God Embodied Relations to

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe Redeemed Image of God examines the classical development of imago Dei, the image of God, in Christian theology, and reconstructs the doctrine in order to recover the role of the image in redemption and the importance of human embodiment in salvific relationships. The author argues that the imago Dei is the point of contact that enables a rich web of relationships to others, but most importantly the redemptive relationship to the Other, God. From this perspective, not only can the imago Dei be saved, but the imago Dei is essential in saving us. Windley-Daoust retrieves the deep classical meaning of the Image of God as redemptive point of contact and addresses the wholistic worldview of our century through dialogue with existential phenomenologists Gabriel Marcel and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. This contemporary reconstruction of the image of God theology fully values the Incarnation as enabling redemption, and the human body as touchstone to the transcendent. This is a new vision of the imago Dei, and a theologically suggestive understanding of the human as embodied spirit.Table of ContentsChapter 1 Preface Chapter 2 Can the Classical Imago Dei Be Saved? Book SynopsisIn this book, Philip Tite explores the role of biblical texts in the promotion of peace and violence. He begins by exploring the function of religious texts as ideological elements, recognizing that the New Testament affects the social construction of ''realities'' or cultures within which people read and apply authoritative writings to ethical discussions. Arguing that an ''engaged reading '' of these texts is central within moral discourse, Dr. Tite explores such issues as feminist challenges to biblical ethics, Jewish-Christian relations, and gay and lesbian ethical disputes in Christianity.Trade ReviewTite's work is carefully researched, passionately argued, refreshingly self-reflective, and deeply thought provoking. -- Dorothy Jean Weaver, Palm Beach Atlantic University * Studies in Religion/Sciences Religieuses, Vol. 35/2: 2006 *Table of ContentsChapter 1 Preface Chapter 2 Conceiving Peace and Violence: A Personal Journey; Examples of Biblical Peace and Violence Promotion; Ideological Construction; Peace and Violence Promotion; Concluding Comments Chapter 3 Exploring Peace and Violence: Case Study One: The Fourth Gospel; Case Study Two: 1 Peter; Concluding Comments Chapter 4 Assessing Peace and Violence: Challenge of Gender Issues; Challenge of Anti-Semitism; Challenge of Gay Culture; A Personal Challenge; Bibliography; Indices

Book SynopsisThis study tackles the problem of the Song of Song''s structure by beginning at the bottom, the microstructure of the Song, rather than at the top. By employing a new type of rhetorical method, Professor Roberts defines each of the minimal structural units of the Song by identifying the formal poetic features that mark its opening and closing, coupled with the poetic features that create cohesion within it. Moving up the Song''s structural ladder, larger units are identified with the same technique. While this study does not identify an overall structure, it does demonstrate how recognition of these formal structuring devices can help the interpreter define the structural units of the Song with far greater precision. The final chapter presents a catalog of these formal, poetic features that typically mark the opening and closure of structural units in the Song, as well as those that effect cohesion. Within is a catalog that can be refined and enlarged by application of the same method to other poetic texts. Other exegetical insights abound. Professor Roberts demonstrates a more highly structured pattern of the wasfs than has been recognized heretofore, and proposes a new interpretation of the adjuration refrain. He identifies a type of phonological anacrusis employed numerous times in the Song, and addresses almost every text-critical issue in the Song, many of which are resolved by attention to poetic structuring devices.Trade ReviewPhil Roberts has written a careful study of the poetry of Song of Songs. His insights shed light on the form and meaning of the Song, and his ideas on how to approach the study of biblical poetry deserve serious consideration. -- Adele Berlin, Robert H. Smith Professor of the Hebrew Bible, University of MarylandAnyone who has worked on the Song of Songs knows how difficult it is to determine the structure of the book. D. Did Jesus baptize people like John? Where did Christian baptism come from? In this book Dr. Dapaah looks at these and other important questions, coming up with some intriguing answers. His well-written work offers thought-provoking insights into the questions of the historical Jesus, and I very warmly commend it. -- David Wenham, Dean and Lecturer, Wycliffe Hall, Oxford UniversityHere is a robust challenge to the tacit and improbable assumption of most NT specialists that baptism, which was so prominent in the launching of Jesus' ministry, simply disappeared from the scene during that period only to reemerge fully formed in the early church in Acts. Book SynopsisThis work serves as an investigation of the Isis cult by tracing its development from Egypt into Greco-Roman society. The origin of the Isis cult is described by using the accounts of Plutarch, Apuleius, and Diodorus before examining the effects of Isis on Egyptian culture. The Isis cult soon overflows into the Greco-Roman world. While this mysterious religion initially encounters opposition, especially since it clashes with Roman patriarchal society, it overcomes these limitations. The relevance of Isis to New Testament studies is demonstrated by comparing similar Pauline practices to Isiac beliefs and practices. The concepts of freedom, salvation, baptism, and resurrection in Pauline Christianity overlap with Isiac beliefs. The possibility of the Isis cult as an historical context is explored in the book of 1 Timothy, which serves as an example of the intersection between the biblical text and the Egyptian cult of Isis.Trade ReviewMcCabe offers a clearly written overview of aspects of the Isis cult that provide a backdrop for the NT. * New Testament Abstracts *In this splendid volume, McCabe capably brings the reader into the intricate world of Isis, but more importantly offers fresh research to demonstrate the relevance of Isis studies for understand the critical portions of the New Testament and the challenges Christianity faced as it spread across the Roman Empire in the first century. -- William R. The book intends to dismiss antiquated assumptions of biblical formation by examining biblical scholarship from new and creative phenomenological perspectives. Professor Soggie argues that the anecdotal wisdom drawn from these perspectives exposes the natural function of the narrative as it relates to every individual and transforms the way we view ancient literature. Book SynopsisThe shepherd metaphor is one of the most important theological images in the Hebrew Bible. The contemporary image of shepherd inclines toward a therapist, counselor, and caregiver. However, careful study of this metaphor in the Hebrew Bible proves otherwise. The book is designed to reveal all possible original meanings of the shepherd image, expressed not only in Yahweh, but also in various biblical characters such as Abraham, Moses, David, and so forth. However, the focus is not on the person designated as shepherd, but rather the roles and characteristics of a shepherd that would manifest through these people. To achieve this, the Hebrew text has been studied by applying historical-literacy exegesis to determine the textual meaning. Comparison of the ancient Near Eastern literature help to enlighten the usage of the metaphor in the ancient world related to the Old Testament. This work shows how the definitions given in the current literature of pastoral theology fail to satisfy the meaning of shepherd, and how the Old Testament is an essential resource for the study of the shepherd metaphor. The result is to have the metaphor used in its proper understanding. The book also aims to consolidate the meanings of the metaphor in the various biblical passages for future development.Table of ContentsPart 1 Preface Part 2 List of Abbreviations Chapter 3 Introduction Chapter 4 The Metaphor of Shepherd in Pastoral Theology Chapter 5 The Hermeneutical Methodology Chapter 6 The Image of the Shepherd in the Torah Chapter 7 The Metaphor of Shepherd in the Former Prophetic Literature Chapter 8 The Metaphor of Shepherd in the Later Prophetic Literature Chapter 9 The Metaphor of Shepherd in the Writings Chapter 10 The Metaphor of Shepherd and Biblical Studies Chapter 11 Conclusion Part 12 Bibliography Part 13 Scripture Index Part 14 Subject Index

Book SynopsisThis work addresses the questions concerning the crucifixion/resurrection story, the legends of Jesus in India, Tibet and China, and the unique style and content of the Fourth Gospel. The street theatre style of the Hebrew prophets grounds the belief that Jesus also employed drama to proclaim his visions. To encourage his people who were suffering under cruel Roman oppression, he dramatized Isaiah''s Suffering Servant poem that climaxes with his rescue/resurrection-a promise that God will rescue Israel. Isaiah''s Missionary Servant poem inspired him to carry his Gospel into new lands. The Syrian Acts of Thomas and more recently discovered material detail his secret ministry to India, Tibet, and China. There, his spirited exchanges with Hindus, Buddhists, and Taoists have enriched the Gospels and may have affected the evolution of eastern religious and philosophical thought, particularly that of Mahayana Buddhism. The book''s discussion provides evidence that Jesus was a pioneer of interfaith dialogue and a prophet of world spirituality who inspires us to build a world community of justice, peace and love for people of all faiths. • The Image of God

University Press of America The Image of God

Book SynopsisThis book uses the imago Dei (the image of God) as an organizing principle for a systematic treatment of Old Testament theology. This concept challenges humanity to resemble or reflect the communicable attributes of God, such as love, compassion, rationality, and creativity. Exodus 34:6-8 helps the biblical reader to discern in whose image we have been made. This concept also serves as the basis for God''s invitation, covenant, redemption, community, worship, and wisdom are keys to understanding the divine-human relationship. This concept also calls humanity to represent divine concerns by extending his compassion to the socially disadvantaged, the physically challenged, and the spiritually estranged. The New Testament''s portrait of Jesus echoes these concerns: He is the image of the invisible God; He enables his followers to come near to God; and He represents the concerns of God''s kingdom.Table of ContentsPart 1 Preface Part 2 Acknowledgements Part 3 Abbreviations Chapter 4 Introduction Chapter 5 Theology Proper: God Chapter 6 Anthropology: Man in the Image of God Chapter 7 Sin: Relationship Ruptured Chapter 8 Covenant: Relationship Restored Chapter 9 Redemption & Relationship Chapter 10 The Ethics of Relationship Chapter 11 The Community of Relationship Chapter 12 Worship: The Essence of Relationship Chapter 13 Wisdom: Commitment to Relationship Chapter 14 Ministry & Evangelism Chapter 15 Jesus: The Image of the Invisible God Chapter 16 Conclusion Part 17 Appendix Part 18 Indexes
