Book Synopsis“Really, what other book would anyone ever need?” —Naomi Shihab Nye, author of Honeybee“Elegant and exquisite.” —Deepak Chopra, author of Muhammad, Jesus, and BuddhaThe Big Red Book is a poetic masterpiece from Jalaluddin Rumi, the medieval Sufi mystic whom Time magazine calls “the most popular poet in America.” Readers continue to be awed and inspired by Rumi’s masterfully lyrical, deeply expressive poems, collected in volumes such as The Illustrated Rumi, The Soul of Rumi, and the bestselling The Essential Rumi. With The Big Red Book, acclaimed poet and Rumi interpreter Coleman Barks offers a never-before-published translation of a crucial anthology of poems widely considered to be one of Persian literature’s greatest treasures. Trade Review"Coleman Barks is a pioneer and renown scholar on Rumi, the great Sufi. In his elegant and exquisite way, Coleman has made Rumi as popular as Shakespeare to the world and continues to inspire us with the Rumi's ecstatic poetry." -- Deepak Chopra, author of The Shadow Effect and Jesus "Really, what other book would anyone ever need?" -- Naomi Shihab Nye, author of Honeybee "Coleman Barks found Rumi floating in some Georgia lake and brought him back to life. Coleman has stayed up all night, and every reader is grateful." -- Robert Bly, National Book Award-winning poet and translator "Rumi's Big Red Book tells us: 'Compassion builds a door, Restlessness cuts a key.' I am forever grateful to Coleman Barks, restless, yearning to find the bridge from Rumi and Shams to the world we presently inhabit. • The Face of God

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Face of God

Book SynopsisRoger Scruton explores the place of God in a disenchanted world. His argument is a response to the atheist culture that is now growing around us, and also a defence of human uniqueness. He rebuts the claim that there is no meaning or purpose in the natural world, and argues that the sacred and the transcendental are ''real presences'', through which human beings come to know themselves and to find both their freedom and their redemption. In the human face we find a paradigm of meaning. And from this experience, Scruton argues, we both construct the face of the world, and address the face of God. We find in the face both the proof of our freedom and the mark of self-consciousness. One of the motivations of the atheist culture is to escape from the eye of judgement. You escape from the eye of judgement by blotting out the face: and this, Scruton argues, is the most disturbing aspect of the times in which we live. In his wide-ranging argument Scruton explains the growing sense oTrade ReviewRoger Scruton is one of our most interesting intellectuals... This is an important book, with a very wide cultural range. Pluto Press Small Places Large Issues

Book SynopsisFully updated fifth edition of the classic introduction to social and cultural anthropologyTrade Review'A masterful introduction to the wide range of subjects studied by anthropologists as well as to the distinctive perspectives they bring to bear on these matters.' -- Vered Amit, Professor Emerita of Anthropology, Concordia University'In almost three decades since it was first published, this book has evolved with its subject, magnificently corroborating its author’s thesis, that the best anthropology addresses timeless themes of the human condition through a relentless focus on the contemporary. In a novelty-obsessed age, Eriksen’s encyclopaedic tour of comparative anthropology teaches us to build on classical foundations. This is not just another book in the library of anthropology; it is an entire anthropological library in one book.' -- Tim Ingold, Emeritus Professor of Social Anthropology, University of Aberdeen'Remains among the most brilliant summaries of key ideas animating anthropology. In his famously accessible writing style, Eriksen introduces fundamental questions that shape human life, and provides an overview of the discipline’s contribution to the pressing issues of our times. The new version will not only appeal to beginners, but is also a must-read for established professionals.' -- Ursula Rao, Director, Anthropology of Politics and Governance, Max-Planck-Institute for Social Anthropology'Draws students into exploring our human diversity in all its intriguing manifestations, offering a wonderful way to grasp the excitement of anthropology and its focus on what it means to be human.' -- Rob Borofsky, Center for a Public Anthropology'Authoritative, challenging, accessible, up-to-date, this is a splendid introduction to modern social anthropology. I would press it on anyone who wants a better grasp of the diversity of human ways of living. And it is a must-read for students.' -- Adam Kuper, Centennial Professor of Anthropology, London School of Economics'This classic volume is quite simply the best introduction there is to social and cultural anthropology. Deeply grounded in the history of anthropological thought, it is also thoroughly up to date. More than that, it is unfailingly engaging, clear and accurate. There is no better place to go to begin to learn why anthropology has been and remains a vital discipline in the contemporary world.' -- Joel Robbins, Sigrid Rausing Professor of Social Anthropology, University of Cambridge'Small Places, Large Issues shows us Thomas Hylland Eriksen in his admirable triple capacity as an anthropologist: the scholar, with depth and breadth of knowledge, and with a critical sense; the statesman, negotiating with fairness between anthropological camps; and the journalist, with a sense of what is new, zooming between close-up and Big Picture, and writing clearly about it all.' -- Ulf Hannerz'This wonderfully lucid introduction to social and cultural anthropology readily captures students' attention. By delineating the past and present development of the discipline, Eriksen underscores continuities and challenges that inform the practice of anthropology in today's world. In presenting anthropology as a means for elucidating large issues through the analysis of small places, the book speaks eloquently to anthropology's intellectual vibrance and practical value.' -- Noel Dyck, Professor of Social Anthropology, Simon Fraser UniversityTable of ContentsSeries Preface Preface to the fifth edition 1. Book SynopsisBiblical Foundations of Spirituality invites readers to touch a finger to the flame of the Bible by offering guidance on what, how, and why to read Scripture as a source of spiritual nourishment. The second edition builds on Barbara Bowe's acclaimed book with two new chapters by Laurie Brink and John R. Barker introducing key theological concepts and exploring how biblical spirituality was first experienced and expressed in early Christian communities. The book begins by exploring the many meanings of the word spirituality, then leads readers through the Biblefrom Genesis to Revelationto develop a biblically based spirituality that can serve as a compass in the challenges of life. Updated to reference the latest scholarship, this book helps make the Bible more accessible and shows how it can be relevant to life today. The book stresses the spiritual dimension of biblical figures' search for God and shows how their insights about Godfrom successes to dead endscan reflect our contemporaryTrade ReviewIn this second edition of Barbara Bowe’s award-winning book, the original text is supplemented by two excellent new chapters. John Barker’s discussion of postexilic theology serves as a bridge between the theology of the Old and New Testaments, and Laurie Brink provides a sketch of the postcanonical movement of Christian theology. Bowe laid a firm foundation for this work; Barker and Brink have added to the trustworthiness of its structure. -- Dianne Bergant, CSA, Catholic Theological UnionBarbara Bowe’s work contributes to an understanding of spirituality that emphasizes how our daily and contextual response to God gives rise to our theology. Her work considers how the lived daily experience of a people of faith “touching their fingers to the flame” and “eating God’s word” gave rise to the Sacred Scripture and continues to give rise to our theologizing on that Scripture. The contributions of John R. Barker and Laurie Brink to this new edition of Bowe’s masterful work help the flame of her book burn even brighter. -- Gilberto Cavazos-González, OFM, Pontifical University AntonianumTable of ContentsPreface to the Second Edition Acknowledgments Abbreviations for Biblical Books Chronology Introduction: Touching a Finger to the Flame 1 What Is Spirituality? 2 God beyond All Names 3 The Riddle of the World 4 The God of Blessing and Salvation 5 I Have Heard Their Cry 6 Royal Power and the Covenant Dream 7 Prophetic Spirituality 8 Wisdom Has Built Herself a House 9 Crisis and Hope 10 That Man Jesus 11 Pauline Spirituality 12 A New Heaven and a New Earth Conclusion: Biblical Foundations of Spirituality Epilogue: The Church That Sojourns Notes Glossary Bibliography Index of Biblical Names Index of Proper Names Index of Places Index of Scripture Citations and Ancient Literature Index of Subjects In Memorial: Barbara Ellen Bowe, R.S.C.J.: December 1, 1945–March 14, 2010

University Press of America Faith Negotiating Loyalties

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFaith Negotiating Loyalties draws readers into the world of Christian faith in South Africa and the question of loyalties in the new post-apartheid state. It carries out its investigation in two parts. Part one examines Christian faith and loyalty during the first nation-building exercise following the South African War, positioning the creation and contestation of three Christianities corresponding to three nationalisms, each of which imagined South Africa in a particular way, shaping faith accordingly. The idea of an undifferentiated South African Christianity gives way to contesting and contested Christianities, nationalism gives way to nationalisms, and faith emerges in tension with and in criticism of these loyalties. Part two discusses the American theologian H. Richard Niebuhr in South Africa. Three kinds of faith in his wittings are set forth: social faith, radial faith, and reconstructing faith. Contextualized within the South African story, Niebuhr''s ideas suggest self and sTrade ReviewAn exceptionally fine work that makes a contribution both to theological ethics, through its interpretation of H. Richard Niebuhr, and to the study of Christianity in South Africa, through its critical use of Niebuhr's thought to organize and refocus the South African debate on the relation of Christianity to the reconstruction of South African society and national identity. -- William Johnson Everett, Herbert Gezork Professor of Christian Social Ethics, Andover Newton Theological SchoolSteve Martin's reading of H. Richard Niebuhr's legacy in relation to the South African story is remarkable for its creativity, insight, and breadth of scholarship. . . . • Equinox Publishing Ltd Charming Beauties and Frightful Beasts: Non-Human Animals in South Asian Myth, Ritual and Folklore

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisDiscussions on non-human animals, other-than-human persons and religion originally emerged within the context of Christian theology, eco-theology and Western-based environmentalism. In response to that, and by adhering to post-modern discourses on, for instance, indigeneity, mimicry and hybridity, the volume explores South Asian cultural manifestations and aspects of localised knowledge in relation to the construction and the Otherisation of the concept of body and behaviour in non-human animals. The study of non-human animals as other-than-human persons (actual animals, but also animal-spirits, animal deities, etc.) has marked a significant shift in the ethics/politics of the academic study of religion. The chapters in this book investigate how South Asian religions, with their sacred narratives, ritualised practices and popular performances, bear witness to the active presence of non-human animals as both culture makers/bearers and symbols of spirituality. Further to that, with bourgeoning debates on religion, indigeneity, eco-theology and environmentalism, the volume urges for a consolidation and promotion of an analysis of the twofold epistemic violence exerted towards animals as subaltern to human animals and to animals in Western and Christian traditions. The book is divided into fifteen chapters, each dealing with non-human animals and the concept of animality in different South Asian traditions, or various aspects of the same tradition. The structure of the book reflects that of what is probably the most popular collection of folk tales on animals in South Asia, the Pancatantra. Like the original text, the volume is divided into five books (tantras) whose single stories (our chapters) act as sub-strings inscribed in larger narrative frames. As in the original Pancatantra, the principal themes of each book are signalled by key words which provide the link between successive narrative cycles. Such a structural arrangement creates the backbone for the main body of the book allowing for an articulate, clear and reasoned discussion of single themes, such as 1) non-human animals as divine portents in situations of imbalance; 2) non-human animals as restorers of order and symbols of cultural identity; 3) non-human animals as exemplary beings and spiritual teachers in sacred narratives; 4) non-human animals as symbols of love and object of human reverence; 5) non-human animals as portents symbolising the life cycle, including its inevitable end. In the conclusion, the editors summarise what has been achieved with this academic 'narrative' and reflect constructively on its outcomes as well as future developments with respect to past and present scholarship.Table of ContentsThe Animal Question in South Asia: A Post-Modern Pancatantra Thomas Dahnhardt and Fabrizio M.
