Book SynopsisWith the proliferation of huge amounts of (heterogeneous) data on the Web, the importance of information retrieval (IR) has grown considerably over the last few years. Big players in the computer industry, such as Google, Microsoft and Yahoo!, are the primary contributors of technology for fast access to Web-based information; and searching capabilities are now integrated into most information systems, ranging from business management software and customer relationship systems to social networks and mobile phone applications.Ceri and his co-authors aim at taking their readers from the foundations of modern information retrieval to the most advanced challenges of Web IR. To this end, their book is divided into three parts. The first part addresses the principles of IR and provides a systematic and compact description of basic information retrieval techniques (including binary, vector space and probabilistic models as well as natural language search processing) before focusing on its application to the Web. Part two addresses the foundational aspects of Web IR by discussing the general architecture of search engines (with a focus on the crawling and indexing processes), describing link analysis methods (specifically Page Rank and HITS), addressing recommendation and diversification, and finally presenting advertising in search (the main source of revenues for search engines). The third and final part describes advanced aspects of Web search, each chapter providing a self-contained, up-to-date survey on current Web research directions. Topics in this part include meta-search and multi-domain search, semantic search, search in the context of multimedia data, and crowd search. The book is ideally suited to courses on information retrieval, as it covers all Web-independent foundational aspects. Its presentation is self-contained and does not require prior background knowledge. It can also be used in the context of classic courses on data management, allowing the instructor to cover both structured and unstructured data in various formats. Its classroom use is facilitated by a set of slides, which can be downloaded from www.search-computing.org.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews:“The book covers not only a wide range, but everything that is essential to the topic of Web information retrieval. … this book is an excellent starting point into the field of Web information retrieval, and can be recommended for classroom use.” (Gottfried Vossen, zbMATH, Vol. 1283, 2014)“... this book is a valuable resource for students and instructors in web IR, primarily as a reference to supplement course teaching. Researchers and practitioners should find the book a useful quick reference guide for key concepts, techniques, and recent trends in web IR.” (Wingyan Chung, ACM Computing Reviews, July 2014)Table of ContentsPart I Principles of Information Retrieval.- An Introduction to Information Retrieval.- The Information Retrieval Process.- Information Retrieval Models.- Classification and Clustering.- Natural Language Processing for Search.- Part II Information Retrieval for the Web.- Search Engines.- Link Analysis.- Recommendation and Diversification for the Web.- Advertising in Search.- Part III Advanced Aspects of Web Search.- Publishing Data on the Web.- Meta-Search and Multi-Domain Search.- Semantic Search.- Multimedia Search.- Search Process and Interfaces.- Human Computation and Crowd Search.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is the first volume of a unique collection that brings together the best English-language problems created for students competing in the Computational Linguistics Olympiad. These problems are representative of the diverse areas presented in the competition and designed with three principles in mind:· To challenge the student analytically, without requiring any explicit knowledge or experience in linguistics or computer science;· To expose the student to the different kinds of reasoning required when encountering a new phenomenon in a language, both as a theoretical topic and as an applied problem;· To foster the natural curiosity students have about the workings of their own language, as well as to introduce them to the beauty and structure of other languages;· To learn about the models and techniques used by computers to understand human language.Aside from being a fun intellectual challenge, the Olympiad mimics the skills used by researchers and scholars in the field of computational linguistics. In an increasingly global economy where businesses operate across borders and languages, having a strong pool of computational linguists is a competitive advantage, and an important component to both security and growth in the 21st century. This collection of problems is a wonderful general introduction to the field of linguistics through the analytic problem solving technique."A fantastic collection of problems for anyone who is curious about how human language works! These books take serious scientific questions and present them in a fun, accessible way. Readers exercise their logical thinking capabilities while learning about a wide range of human languages, linguistic phenomena, and computational models. " - Kevin Knight, USC Information Sciences Institute Trade ReviewFrom the reviews:“This book presents 56 problems, with solutions, created for high school students competing in a computational linguistics olympiad. … The interesting, elegant, and very diverse problems are fun to read and solve, and may be enjoyed not only by high school students, but also by current, future, or potential system thinkers, including programmers, analysts, or linguists.” (H. • Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Introduction to Evolutionary Computing

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe overall structure of this new edition is three-tier: Part I presents the basics, Part II is concerned with methodological issues, and Part III discusses advanced topics. In the second edition the authors have reorganized the material to focus on problems, how to represent them, and then how to choose and design algorithms for different representations. They also added a chapter on problems, reflecting the overall book focus on problem-solvers, a chapter on parameter tuning, which they combined with the parameter control and "how-to" chapters into a methodological part, and finally a chapter on evolutionary robotics with an outlook on possible exciting developments in this field. The book is suitable for undergraduate and graduate courses in artificial intelligence and computational intelligence, and for self-study by practitioners and researchers engaged with all aspects of bioinspired design and optimization.Trade Review“This book aims to give a thorough introduction to evolutionary computing, covering techniques and methodological issues. … the book does a good job of giving a general overview of the field. It assumes very little initial knowledge and the breath of its coverage is very impressive. … the supporting website does contain suggested further reading for each of the chapters.” (Barry Wilkes, bcs The Chartered Institute for IT, bcs.org, May, 2016)“This second edition of the book under review is very timely and corresponds to Evolutionary Computation (EC)’s status as an established methodology. … The chapter subdivision into different algorithms used in the first edition … has been replaced by a more suitable student/researcher-oriented approach; this is also supported by the website www.evolutionarycomputation.org, which contains a trove of exercises, slides and extra bibliographic references.” (Anna I. Esparcia-Alcázar, Mathematical Reviews, May, 2016)“Introduction to Evolutionary Computing is an excellent and readable text that should find a place on the bookshelf of anyone who researches and/or teaches in this domain. Suitable for a graduate course or upper-level undergraduate course in Evolutionary Computing, it is also a superior and well-organized reference book. … papers and presentations cited in the text provide a marvelous literature review. … The clarity of exposition and detail are excellent … .” Table of ContentsZum Begriff der K¨unstlichen Intelligenz.- Praktische Grenzen.- Theoretische Grenzen.- Konzeptionelle Grenzen.- Ausblicke auf Hybride KI.
