    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe block is no more than the land and building area defined by streets. It is the nature of the interface between the two, which has a critical impact on the quality of the spaces between those buildings. The importance of the block to city life is well rehearsed, and in any case, we seldom find ourselves in the business of making cities from scratch. But we are in the business of making new houses, neighbourhoods and new local centres, and we need lots of them: 250,000 a year to be imprecise. Against the background of a burgeoning housing shortage in the UK, there are varied issues to be reconciled. The Urban Block charts the fall and rise of the perimeter block as the staple of urban form and structure from ancient times. It takes you through the process of understanding, defining, structuring and designing the block. Carefully selected urban and suburban case examples explain “do's and don'ts” of good block layout and will help you to produce better masterplans, while staying in touch with commercial realities. This is an essential guide for urban designers, masterplanners and architects that will allow you to produce quality streetscapes in a contemporary context.Table of Contents0. White Star Raphael: The Life of a Genius

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisOn the 500th anniversary of Raphael's death, this handsomely illustrated volume looks at his life, his art, and his genius. Raphael was an artist ahead of his time, both as a painter and in the way he managed his studio: he acted as an entrepreneur, creating a modern organisation with an excellent group of collaborators. His inventions and ideas spread widely, thanks to engravings and woodcuts. So, even in his lifetime, Raphael gained renown with critics and collectors. This magnificent study of the great master, written by an expert historiographer who has curated exhibitions of Raphael's art, explores the full range of his work - from his altar pieces, to the stunning frescos in the Vatican Rooms, to the narratives in the Vatican Loggias, to his tapestries for the Sistine Chapel - often with detailed closeups and preliminary sketches and studies. It also delves into Raphael's life, the myth of the painter protected and promoted by the Academia Raffaello, and his influence on the Italian and European artists who followed in his wake. The images of Raphael's work include: Little Angel: a detail from the Sistine Madonna, The Marriage of the Virgin, The Three Graces, The Deposition, The School of Athens, Freeing of St. Peter, Madonna of the Chair, The Fire in the Borgo, The Coronation of Charlemagne, and The Transfiguration.

Book SynopsisMohammad Gharipour is professor at the School of Architecture and Planning at Morgan State University. The recipient of the Hamad Bin Khalifa Fellowship in Islamic Art and the Spiro Kostof Fellowship Award from the Society of Architectural Historians, Gharipour has published extensively on architectural history. He is the the author of Gardens of Renaissance Europe and the Islamic Empires, Synagogues of the Islamic World, and Historiography of Persian Architecture and is editor of 'Bazaar in the Islamic City' (2012) and the founding editor of the 'International Journal of Islamic Architecture'.Trade ReviewMohammad Gharipour's fine book focuses on Persian gardens and the permanent or temporary structures within them, during the period from the fifteenth through the eighteenth centuries, but includes a useful concise survey of references to gardens in earlier literature stretching back to ancient Sumer, the Bible and the Qur'an. A scholarly book, it includes extensive apparatus of glossary, notes and sources, and 100 illustrations, many in color, generally of high quality and beautiful to study. It relies heavily on textual sources, including histories and poetry and travelers' accounts especially, and also pictorial sources, especially manuscript illuminations. Its wide scope seeks to set the garden in its social and historical context as a place for meetings and display and pleasure, as well as sometimes places of production. It goes beyond earlier treatments of the theme, including even color visualizations of Haravi's proposal for a "paradise" garden in the fifteenth century, and has systematic investigations of many questions, especially in regard to structures, such as tents, or thrones in gardens, and also discusses what can be said about the types and arrangements of plants." -- Lawrence Nees, university of Delaware * CHOICE *Much has been written about Islamic gardens and Islamic architecture. Out of stock

Book SynopsisA groundbreaking and essential survey of the art of Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, offering an in-depth discussion of the development of the artist and positioning her work within a wider history of portraiture. Lynette Yiadom-Boakye: Fly In League With The Night celebrates the work of one of the most significant and acclaimed figurative painters of her generation. Fact and fiction fuse in Yiadom-Boakye’s paintings: they appear to be portraits, yet the people she depicts are not real but invented. Created from a composite of found images and her own imagination, her characters seem to exist outside of a specific time or place: they feel at once familiar yet mysterious. This ambiguity resonates again in the enigmatic titles she gives to her artworks. The artist is also a writer of poetry and prose, and for her, the two forms of creativity complement each other: ‘The things I can’t paint, I write, and the things I can’t write, I paint.’ This perceptive and engaging publication provides a comprehensive account of Yiadom-Boakye’s practice over the past two decades. With contributions by the celebrated poet Elizabeth Alexander and curators Andrea Schlieker and Isabella Maidment, alongside new writing by Yiadom-Boakye, Fly In League With The Night reflects the dual aspects of the artist’s career as both a painter and a writer and offers an intimate insight into her creative process.

World Book Media The Awesome 3-D Art Coloring Guide: Learn 3-D

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisDiscover special colouring tips and tricks to make flat illustrations appear as if they’re about to jump right off the page! Each drawing is accompanied by step-by-step instructions and techniques tailored to the specific image. You’ll also find finishing techniques for maximizing the impact of the illusion, such as how to cut out and display your artwork and which angles are best for photographing your work to capture the full effect. There are 20 fantastic pictures included for you to cut out and show off!Trade ReviewLearn how to make simple flat shapes spring to life with this colouring book with a difference. A few stokes of the pencil and a parrot takes flight, a flying carpet takes off, a secret passageway goes deep into the ground and a playful kitten breaks through the paper to wave a paw. As a keen colourist I have quite a few colouring books so it is good to find one that takes the basic idea and goes somewhere new with it. The book opens with an explanation of how to make a drawing look three dimensional by using the rules of perspective to create an optical illusion. Learn how to use colour to show shadows, work out where the light is coming from and finally cut out the right sections to enhance the effect. It sounds complicated but it is simpler than you think, and suitable for a beginner. All you need is a spectrum of coloured pencils, a good rubber and a few other basics that most homes will have like a pencil sharpener, scissors or craft knife and a ruler. No brand names are used and the picture just shows a tin with a basic set of 24 colours; great to know that you don’t need to splash out on the most expensive professional quality pencils. Each of the 20 projects has a page sized photograph of the completed image plus nine steps with photographs of the work being done. There is a key showing all the colours used (nothing unusual, just basic shades without metallics) and the first picture uses two colours to show where the shadows lie and where the light source is coming from. At the back are all the projects printed on one side of the smooth white card with a useful dotted line where you can cut it out. Would that all coloring books had these features! There are tips scattered throughout and a guide showing how to photograph your work with your cellphone, prior to posting it proudly online with a hashtag indicating the source. This book, together with a tin of pencils would make a lovely gift for somebody… if you can bear to part with it! I’d love to see more innovative coloring books like this, well done Zakka Workshop. -- Rachel A Hyde * myshelf.com *

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis first major monograph on cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener traces his life and career, bringing new insights into his business practice, designs and construction techniques. Jean-Henri Riesener (1734–1806) was one of the greatest French cabinetmakers of all time. From humble beginnings as a German immigrant in Paris, he found fame through the delivery of a magnificent roll-top desk to Louis XV in 1769. He went on to become Marie-Antoinette’s favourite cabinetmaker, supplying the queen and the court of Louis XVI with sumptuous furniture of superb quality. Renowned for his exquisite marquetry and refined designs, his pieces were ornamented with spectacular gilt-bronze mounts made by some of the greatest metalworkers in Paris. In the nineteenth century, Riesener’s name became associated with the very best of Louis XVI-period French furniture. His pieces continue to be highly sought after and are found in major museums worldwide. Based on the extensive collections of Riesener furniture in the Wallace Collection, Waddesdon Manor and the Royal Collection, the authors examine the objects and their history, and highlight the changing tastes of the nineteenth-century collectors who acquired so many former French royal pieces. The new illustrations and visual glossary add another important resource for art historians, decorative arts enthusiasts and furniture lovers.Trade ReviewThe first serious Riesener monograph. -- Alexandre Pradère * The Art Newspaper *This authoritative tome is both an enjoyable read as well as a scholarly compilation of original research [...] it is extremely refreshing to be presented with such a clearly written and entirely unapologetic celebration of one of the creative geniuses of the French eighteenth century. This example is Hokusai's The Great Wave. The most notable period in Hokusai’s artistic life was the latter part of his career, beginning in 1830 when he was 70 years old. He began the series of landscapes he is most famous for: ‘Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji’, which included The Great Wave, off Kanagawa, probably his most iconic image.

  • Cobalt Blue: Writings from the Papers of Sam

Sam Francis Foundation Cobalt Blue: Writings from the Papers of Sam

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisA new selected writings from the Californian abstract expressionist famed for his colorful lyricism and dynamic painting This volume beautifully combines the artist's writing with his works on paper in an elegantly designed book. Focusing on principles expressed in his acclaimed Saturated Blue, this volume includes writings from Francis' journals that have never been published before. Sam Francis (1923–94) painted images with words as well as pigments. He approached art as a mediation between divine inspiration and human existence, and a guiding notion was the philosopher's stone, or Lapis Philosophorum. His writings took the form of aphorisms, poetry, dream memories and prose, each providing insight into his visual art. His publishing project, the Lapis Press, allowed Francis to pursue his love of writing and discover new ways to marry the brilliance of words with the visual. That ethos is reflected in the superb design of this collection. The production used a new seven-color print technology to create plates with added vibrancy and color density.Trade ReviewThere’s a lyric quality to much of this writing and a deep concern with dreams and the unconscious as a way of unblocking the ‘rational mind’ in response to the ills of the world ... he had a belief in the power of art as a positive force for change in the world and his prodigious output can be seen in this light which doesn’t in any way diminish its aesthetic substance. -- Steve Spence * Litter *For Francis words, images and symbolism were a mystery, a Japanese Zen Koan, something to uncover, discover, about himself. The exchange between writing and painting, was for him all part of the same engagement, the same enigma regarding life, the same riddle. To read his writing is to be drawn in to a vast visionary world that grapples with the mystifying problems of existence and the immensity of the imagination. -- Eléna RiveraColorful and abstract, his paintings and words are as meditative and meaningful to the eyes and minds of the reader as they were to Francis himself. * Belles & Rebelles *

Book SynopsisA poetic, passionate and intensely personal exploration of colour written during the final year of Derek Jarman''s life -- with a new introduction by Ali Smith. In Chroma, his most poetic and lyrical book, Derek Jarman explores the uses of colour. Shifting across the spectrum and from the medieval to the modern, he draws on the work of great colour theorists from Pliny to Leonardo. Interwoven with these musings are evocative memories from Jarman''s childhood and illustrious career, along with reflections on his deteriorating health. Written a year before Jarman's death, and as his eyesight was failing, this is an intensely personal work; a paean from an artist seeking to memorialise the extraordinary power of colour even while it receded from his own life.Trade ReviewChroma is more than an Aids autobiography...it is a paean to colour...Shot through with sass and moving testimony...this complexly written, yet stylish and readable book locates most powerfully the sublimal brilliance of one artist * Gay Times *Chroma sparks off pieces of Jarman's poetry and prose against fragments that span Ovid, Alberti, Goethe and Wittgenstein...to form a highly personal reflection on colour, a keleidoscopic experience that throws out different facets like a prism in the light * New Statesman *Full of anger, wit, emotion, and knowledge, this collection informs and astounds...Immensely powerful * Kirkus *Jarman reminds us how much there is to be smelled, observed and listened to in the world if we do not walk past it * Guardian *The context of the writing of this book inevitably turns it from an amusing bricollage to a gesture of extraordinary generosity, a tribute to the continuing need to create and communicate on the very edge of darkness * Financial Times *

David Zwirner Rose Wylie: painting a noun…

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisCelebrated British painter Rose Wylie—whose works are at once tactile, cerebral, and humorous—often draws her influence from a wide range of popular culture. Here her newest body of work references memories from her own life and mimics the way memories evolve and change over time. Wylie’s source material is culled from the vast visual world around her, ranging from sixteenth-century British estates to Serena Williams and the French Open. While initially these may seem random or aesthetically simplistic, through the nuanced use of humor, language, and compositional structure, Wylie creates wittily observed and subtly sophisticated meditations on the nature of memory, and visual representation itself, in line with the paintings she has become known for over the course of her career. A new essay by art critic Michael Glover explores the remarkable painter whose work has “spark, assurance, brash humor, an extraordinary, freewheeling eclecticism that seems to be just as ready to suck in references to the art of Ptolemaic Egypt and Roman portraiture as to pay homage to the films of Quentin Tarantino and the late paintings of Philip Guston.” Part of David Zwirner Books’s Spotlight Series, this book features Wylie’s newest paintings and drawings and is published on the occasion of the artist’s 2020 solo exhibition of these works at David Zwirner Hong Kong.Trade Review'"Expect a riot of colourful and unruly compositions, which delight with their exuberance."' - Staff "Sassy Hong Kong"'"Rose Wylie's painting a noun...exhibition is truly one-of-a-kind."' - Staff "Time Out Hong Kong"'"While Rose Wylie's artworks on first glance appear simplistic or even naive, a closer examination reveals many fascinating details and reminds the viewer of the cartoon-like images of Philip Guston and Jean Michel Basquiat."' - Joanne Shurvell "Forbes"'"Wylie fearlessly tackles the thorniest topics head-on, committing her thoughts and questions about politics, religion, fame, love, history, money and nature to canvas."' - Charlotte Brook "Harper's Bazaar'"In their multiple points of reference, and visual gourmandising, Wylie's paintings are a reminder of how things coexist in our mind's eye and how the memory of a place or time is never a simple, fixed thing: merely a few threads plucked in the moment from a shimmering tangle."' - Hettie Judah "Art UK"'"She eschews art-world artiness; instead, the paintings are unaffected and joyful, and critics are captivated."' - Harriet Baker "Apollo"

Book SynopsisIn the period following the Second World War, the Architectural Association (AA) became the only British school of architecture of truly global renown. It was one of only two schools in the world which fully embraced and promoted the pedagogical ideals put forward by CIAM (Congrès Internationaux d’Architecture Moderne) — the other being Walter Gropius’s Harvard Graduate School of Design — and emerged as an admired example for architectural education in other countries. Many of the most famous British architects and critics of the past 60 years attended the AA, including Ahrends, Burton + Koralek, Alan Colquhoun and John Miller, Jeremy Dixon and Edward Jones, Frank Duffy, Eldred Evans, Kenneth Frampton, Bill Howell, John Killick, Robert Maguire, Cedric Price, Graeme Shankland and Oliver Cox, Quinlan Terry, John Voelcker, and almost a dozen recipients of the RIBA Gold Medal, viz. Neave Brown, Peter Cook, Edward Cullinan, Philip Dowson, Nicholas Grimshaw, Michael and Patricia Hopkins, Powell + Moya, Richard Rogers, and Joseph Rykvert. The book traces the history of the school from the end of the war until the mid-1960s, when it surrendered its position as the pacemaker in British architectural education in order to safeguard its institutional independence. Alvin Boyarsky, who became chairman in 1971, remodelled the AA as a postmodern, ‘internationalist’ school and detached it from its modernist, British origins. In keeping with this (and partly as a result of it), there has been no research into the AA’s postwar history, which remains dominated by myths and half-truths. The book replaces these myths with an in-depth account of what really happened.Trade Review'The book constitutes a sound and always readable institutional history of the post-war AA and will serve as a reference point for some considerable time to come' – Architectural History Table of ContentsPrologue: A Brief history of the Architectural Association; Chapter 1. Illuminated by penetrating critical commentary that this book excels."—Times Literary Supplement "This book is an admirable as well as well-timed introduction to Le Corbusier. In it much recent scholarship has been pulled together and presented in a lively account of Le Corbusier’s life and work... It is also a record of personal observation and synthesis by an informed and shrewdly sensitive author which will remain valid and fresh in the long term."—Architectural Review "William J R Curtis is the best architectural historian writing in the English language, and that alone makes this book something of an event. Unsurprisingly, Curtis has turned out what is probably the most comprehensive, well balanced and interesting narrative yet produced about one of the giants of 20th century architecture."—Chicago Tribune "As a study of the life and work of possibly the most erudite, probably the most gifted, and certainly the most disturbing architect of the present century, it is unlikely to be superseded."—The Architect, Royal Institute of British Architects' Journal "The most lucid and complete chronicle yet available of Le Corbusier’s achievement. Definitive, chronological, sumptuously illustrated... Curtis is [...] balanced and inclusive, offering excellent discussions of all the Indian work, of many unexecuted projects, and of the vast influence Corbusier has exercised... I think there is no better introduction to the man and his work."—Architects Journal "Just as Le Corbusier is a 'classic' of modern architecture, Curtis's monograph is a 'classic' of the Corbusian bibliography. And with this new edition - substantially enlarged, both in text and illustrations - the book will become indeed the main reference for understanding Le Corbusier's contribution to universal architecture."—Arquitectura Viva "His classic Le Corbusier Ideas and Forms published in 1986 and, for the quarter century since, the most thoughtful and complete analysis of the architect... There is still no better single source than William Curtis... And that's why, architects, yes: you'll need to buy this new version."—Architectural Record "In the new, revised and updated edition of the classic Le Corbusier: Ideas and Forms, Curtis goes beyond just documenting to delve deeper and deeper into the creative underpinnings of Le Corbusier's masterpieces... Many new photographs have been added, including some of Chandigarh taken by Curtis, who himself is an excellent photographer... What Le Corbusier did for the 20th century in shaping the world's built form, William J.R. Curtis does for Le Corbusier, become his master interpreter."—Architecture plus Design, India "It is a carefully considered book, based on extensive thought and study of the vast documentation, addressed to the advanced student of modernism... The structure of the book is very clear and the design and layout are thoughtful and sympathetic. Highly recommended."—Library Journal "Le Corbusier, the Swiss architect who died this month, fifty years ago. Book SynopsisThe Ghent Altarpiece or the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, by the Van Eyck brothers (1432), is recognised worldwide as a great work of art, and one of the most influential paintings ever made. It was the world's first major oil painting, and it is laced with religious mysticism. The work almost reads like an A to Z of Christianity - from the Annunciation to the symbolic sacrifice of Christ, with the 'Mystic Lamb' on an altar in a heavenly meadow, bleeding into the Holy Grail. For the first time, this book gathers together diverse insights on the Ghent Altarpiece, the monumental poliptych that the brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck realised with the assistance of a large workshop and advisers on the painting's subject matters. This book has the same aim: to bring together experts from the most diverse disciplines. Only by combining the perspectives of (art) historians, philosophers, religious studies scholars, mathematicians and specialists in optics can one fully understand the riches and depth of this masterpiece. Lavishly illustrated, including details that have come to light using state-of-the-art techniques during the current conservation project and are not always visible to the naked eye.
