Powell, Duke University“Monahan has achieved such an impressive sense of Pippin's internal developments and career-long motifs that she can adeptly shuttle between works, genres, and themes to build complex arguments about the artist’s cumulative impact.”—Jennifer Jane Marshall, University of Minnesota“Monahan challenges the predominant narrative of Pippin’s life and work, convincingly demonstrating the problems of previous scholarship and providing sound evidence for her own.”—John P. Expertly edited by art historian and curator Francesca Pietropaolo, and richly illustrated, it lends Storr's illuminating insights into an artist's practice and way of thinking across recent decades. Brilliantly scholarly, accessible and engaging, Focal Points offers fresh interpretations of the varied territory of modern and contemporary art. Through a selection of texts spanning from 1986 to 2016, volume one brings together thirty years of Storr's writings on American artist Bruce Nauman (b.1941) whose practice encompasses sculpture, photography, neon, drawing, printmaking and performance. Much of Nauman's work makes use of language games and visual puns, influenced by the linguistic theories of twentieth-century thinker Ludwig Wittgenstein and by the work of writer, poet and playwright Samuel Beckett. • Paolo Veneziano's Coronation of the Virgin

D Giles Ltd Paolo Veneziano's Coronation of the Virgin

Book SynopsisAccording to Nico Muhly, the Coronation of the Virgin is "a panel of pure theatre and music". Painted in 1358 by the Venetian artist Paolo Veneziano (ca. 1295-1362), the apocryphal story of the Virgin's death is depicted in one of the artist's most thrilling and important works. Paolo Veneziano presents the Virgin and Christ in sumptuous garments and surrounded by a choir of angels playing portable organs, lutes, trumpets, tambourines, and other instruments. The angels symbolize the harmony of the universe; their instruments are the authentic components of a medieval orchestra, accurately depicted and correctly held and played. The decorative sparkle of the surface - with its brilliant, expensive colours, patterned textiles, and lavish gold leaf - reflects the Venetians' love of luxury, a taste that enriches much of 14th- and 15th-century architecture in Venice.Table of ContentsDirector's Foreword by Ian Wardropper; Acknowledgments; Contribution by Nico Muhly; Essay by Xavier F. • Exposing the Maya: Early Archaeological

D Giles Ltd Exposing the Maya: Early Archaeological

Book SynopsisExposing the Maya focuses on the works of 19th-century photographers Désiré Charnay, Alice and Augustus Le Plongeon, Teobert Maler, Alfred Maudslay and Adela Breton, all of whom were masters of their craft and travelled extensively to sites in Mexico and Central America. The over 100 selected images in this volume, together with nearly 40 additional contextual images featuring sketches from travel journals, hand-coloured drawings, prints, and maps, are combined with the photographers’ own words found in their published writings, journals and letters to provide insight into their methods, context for their images, and capture the realities of field work in Mesoamerica. Accessible and highly illustrated, Exposing the Maya features rare and important early photographs of the archaeological ruins and remains of the great Mayan and Aztec civilizations of Mesoamerica, from an age that witnessed the evolution of photographic techniques and brought to life the long-faded murals and decoration of these ruins. This is an absorbing story of incredible journeys, the challenging conditions under which these pioneering photographers produced their images, and how they perceived the remnants of these ancient indigenous cultures in modern-day Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras.Table of ContentsForeword/Acknowledgments; Introduction; The Photographers: 1.Désiré Charnay; 2. In addition to contextualizing these portraits in the visual art and culture of the wider Roman empire, this publication will provide the first detailed and secure evidence for their original appearances. Highlights of this include the recently discovered vestiges of colorful paint, fresh insights into masterful marble polishes, and fascinating possibilities regarding their production and display in antiquity. The lasting value of this monograph lies in the fact that it pursues the hypothesis of a natural-philosophical interpretation of Friedrich's works for the first time with consistency.”—Johannes Grave, Art Newspaper“A work of intellectual depth and subtlety, it models how art history can engage more creatively and expansively with scientific and philosophical ideas about the natural world. Amstutz enjoins us, like Friedrich, to seek out unexpected resemblances.”—Stephanie O’Rourke, Art HistoryWinner of the 2019 Novalis Prize for innovative research on European Romanticism in any field, sponsored by Novalis GesellschaftShortlisted for the Waterloo Centre for German Studies Book Prize, sponsored by the The University of WaterlooFinalist for the Klaus Heyne Prize for Research on German Romanticism, sponsored by Goethe-Universität Frankfurt“In beautiful and, at times, poetic prose, Nina Amstutz masterfully explores Friedrich’s late work through the lens of German Romantic nature philosophy and the life sciences. • Paul McCarthy And Damon McCarthy

JRP Ringier Paul McCarthy And Damon McCarthy

Book SynopsisThis publication presents photographs shot during the making of Rebel Dabble Babble, a collaboration between Paul McCarthy and his son Damon McCarthy. Rebel Dabble Babble is an installation and video projection work inspired by both Nicholas Ray's 1955 classic Hollywood film Rebel without a Cause and the rumors attending the off-set relationships between its director and his stars James Dean, Nathalie Wood and Sal Mineo. This densely layered opus expands beyond its references to the 1955 movie to offer a meditation on the archetypes and Oedipal tensions that define family dynamics. In the film, McCarthy and his actors (including Hollywood star James Franco) play hybrids both of Ray's cinematic characters and the actors who played them. With this mind-bending series of doubles, binaries and inversions, Rebel Dabble Babble presents perversions of interchangeable roles and fetish relationships.

  • The Italian Renaissance Altarpiece

Yale University Press The Italian Renaissance Altarpiece

Book SynopsisThe comprehensive study of the Italian Renaissance altarpiece from the 13th to the early 17th centuryTrade Review“Ekserdijan has an impressive encyclopaedic knowledge of the byways of altarpiece development during the period. . . . He writes engagingly and wears his learning lightly, and, with its 250 illustrations, this handsome book is designed in the best Yale tradition.”—Peter Humfrey, Art Newspaper“The first in-depth study of the genre. . . . Mr. Ekserdjian nimbly addresses styles, patrons, artists, and history, as well as the three key categories of the Renaissance altarpiece: icons, narratives and mysteries. And he teaches how to read altarpieces, including their predellas, or related supporting panels. The book is beautifully illustrated with 250 plates; you’ll savor both image and text.”—Lance Esplund, Wall Street Journal (Holiday Gift Book selection)“Ekserdjian brilliantly outlines the broad picture, but the devil is in his details: how variously artists, famous and obscure, enlivened and energised this iconic structure, balancing narrative and invention, clarity and mystery.”—Jackie Wullschläger, Financial Times, “Best Books of 2021: Visual Arts”“David Ekserdjian’s book is a sumptuous and scholarly study of a form he sifts into categories — icons, narratives and mysteries — to reveal its development and subtleties.”—Michael Prodger, Sunday Times, “Books of the Year: Art”“[Ekserdijan] excels at shepherding us through the varieties of altarpiece and the terminology used to describe them . . . Peppered with new and surprising insights, this painstaking study will become an indispensable work.”—James Hall, Times Literary Supplement“The glorious art of the kind that Napoleon would have stolen if he could is on full display in David Ekserdijan’s The Italian Renaissance Altarpiece.”—Michael Glover, The Tablet“One of the most magnificent picture books I have ever handled...As David’s minute scholarship and acute observation draw you in deeper, to places and artists you have never heard of, you gain a fresh and startling sense of the breaktaking abundance of sixteenth-century Italy.”—Ferdinand Mount, Times Literary Supplement“Professor Ekserdijan has brought together a career’s worth of knowledge of Italian art to focus on a subject that, while widely commented on, has not received detailed analysis.”—Nicholas Cranfield, Church Times“The very superior product of a lifetime of thinking and writing about the subject...Peppered with new and surprising insights, this meticulous study will become an indispensable work.”—James Hall, Literary Review “Citing a wealth of examples that is unlikely to be surpassed, Ekserdijan’s text is certainly alive to the exceptions that emerge whenever one attempts to apply the rule of thumb...The broad genre of the Renaissance altarpiece is triumphantly reasserted here as an arena for artistic creativity and experimentation.”—Donal Cooper, Apollo Magazine“This beautiful volume's real claim to magisterial status rests on the author's ability to combine formidable erudition with pellucid prose, the elegance with which he organises his almost limitless material, and the originality of the entire enterprise. This book is the crowning achievement of a life's work.”—Daniel Johnson, The Critic“More comprehensive and detailed than any previous work devoted to this subject, David Ekserdjian’s The Italian Renaissance Altarpiece: Between Icon and Narrative both provides an authoritative history of altarpieces in Italy up to c.1600 and addresses fundamental questions about the nature of religious art in this period.”—Nicholas Penny, The Burlington MagazineCHOICE Outstanding Academic Title 2022

Book SynopsisThe first of its kind, the Shenzhen Architectural Guide is dedicated to the city’s architecture and conceived as an atlas. The pages inside are filled with more than 150 relevant buildings and places that constitute the physical palimpsest of modern China’s most famous foundational town. Founded in 1978 as one of the first Special Economic Zones under Deng Xiaoping’s reforms, Shenzhen is a young city that was essentially built from the ground up at a rapid pace – hence the infamous ‘Shenzhen Speed’. Unlike most places, it has built its fortune on being propelled into the future without any connection to the past. Shenzhen is a place where business, immigration, ports, borders, and nature come together to shape a unique and, at times, mystifying architectural experience. This guide will introduce the reader to Shenzhen’s kaleidoscopic architecture with the help of bilingual coordinates and geodata. It will also refer to the city's political history and cultural geography. By photographing these state-of-the-art works in 2020, the book captures a sort of 'here-and-now' that will soon be transformed once again.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisPrefabricated housing is a pressing issue – for those looking for affordable homes as well as for refugees fleeing wars or natural disasters. In common with politicians, architects were caught unawares by the largest wave of migration since the end of the Second World War. However, are tent cities and containers the best solution for cheap, dignified, and quickly assembled accommodation for displaced persons? This challenging situation, along with the changing urban landscape, with its ever-diminishing space, calls into question existing standards in relation to serial housing. Bold and unconventional ideas are called for if architects are to offer high-quality solutions. From eccentric experiments all the way to projects that have already been realized, international design teams present their work between the twin poles of unconventional developments and life-saving shelters in this volume spanning more than 250 pages. Introduced with articles on design principles, and divided into three sections according to the form the structures take when delivered – cuboid, panels and custom units – the book covers everything from playful follies to architectural constructions for the homeless and outpatient medical stations which offer a response to social problems and space shortages. The text, photographs and plans put forward ideas as to how more can be done than the mere assembling of containers. Should we not first consider notions bordering on the absurd in order to come up with workable solutions for housing today?

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisLima has many more sunny days than its inhabitants claim. The urban layout of its historic centre – the famous checkerboard – is the most perfect Cartesian grid in South America, yet the suburbs are the global capital of informality. Lima society lives in a permanent state of commercial frenzy, yet it has preserved the oldest traditions in the continent. The best-known works of architecture are viceregal and republican, yet pre-Columbian ruins are scattered around the city in a manner that can only be found elsewhere in Cairo. Its modern movement is more cheerful than that of the old continent, midway between Brazil and California. And the invasions, a heterodox and radical phenomenon, have generated an astonishing form of urban development. The book describes more than 160 works, organised in routes that range from the territorial to the neighbourhood scale and are designed to explore the city by boat, car, train, bus, bicycle or on foot. It covers the predominant styles of architecture in each period as well as the remains of the pre-existing landscape and the infrastructures that articulate the city today. Interspersed in the texts are references to the civilising mechanisms that have underpinned the construction of the works, the economic activities that have made them possible, and their public administration. Until now, Lima has shown the world a gloomy, unattractive ambience. Herman Melville described it as 'the strangest, saddest city thou can'st see', César Moro as 'Lima la horrible', and Héctor Velarde as 'Lima la gris'. This guide offers a different picture, one of a vibrant, cheerful and insanely glorious city, with bright colour photographs inviting visitors and residents to see it in a new light.

Kyiv is an inseparable part of the European community of nations, where mutual respect of values counts more than the power of the strongest. This title is part of the Histories of Ukrainian Architecture programme initiated by DOM publishers in response to Russia’s attack on Ukraine’s sovereignty on 24 February 2022.
