  • Victionary NEW RETRO: 20th Anniversary Edition: Graphics &

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThere is something distinctly compelling about the vintage aesthetic. Brimming with charm and character, it often tells stories of a colourful past and showcases a level of craftsmanship that many creatives today still aspire to emulate. Retro designs also emanate a sense of comfort and warmth that is tinged with nostalgia. As testament to the adage that old is indeed gold, ‘New Retro’ showcases a brilliant collection of work that is anything but outdated, featuring projects that not only draw inspiration from the good old days, but also merge seamlessly with contemporary influences and culture. First published in 2016, this 2021 rerelease - with additional projects and a special cover design - coincides with Victionary’s 20th anniversary and is dedicated to the fans who have been requesting for its reprint ever since it went out of stock.

Book SynopsisFor some time in the distant past, hand-lettering used to be a highly-regarded skill to master and was ubiquitous via publications and public signages. • Outsider Art of Canada: What else can art be

Five Continents Editions Outsider Art of Canada: What else can art be

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis“Outsider art” is the name given to the idiosyncratic work of self-taught creators who are driven to use their own invented visual language to bring forth images from their imaginations. It is outside the continuum of art history, outside the boundaries of art recognised by established art institutions, and outside the collective discourse of the mainstream art world. This book examines the underlying biases, ideologies, and social factors that inform the various approaches to outsider art, including myths surrounding mental illness, movements toward social inclusion, and movements away from the marginalising effect of labels. Most importantly, Outsider Art of Canada explores how we think about art and who is entitled to call themselves an artist. In this survey dedicated to outsider art in Canada, the first of its kind, the artists introduced have much to tell us about their need to create, unapologetically and without regard to public opinion.

Book SynopsisA comprehensive visual archive of the textile patterns, materials and products produced in the first 15 years of the acclaimed American accessory company BAGGU Designers Emily Sugihara, her mother Joan Sugihara and Ellen Vanderlaan started BAGGU in 2007 because they wanted a reusable bag that was functional, affordable, durable and nice-looking. When they couldn’t find one, they decided to make their own. The result was the now ubiquitous Standard Baggu. In the 15 years since, the BAGGU line has expanded to include various bags and everyday accessories, and has become known for its ever-changing assortment of seasonal prints. But their design philosophy remains the same—function, value, longevity and delight—with the aim of making affordable, quality products as pleasing as they are pragmatic. BAGGU: Hold Everything, 15 Years is a comprehensive catalog of the products and prints produced by BAGGU between 2007 and 2022, and features over 600 full-color product images, and reproductions of to-scale textile prints. Each copy of the book is bound in one of five different fabrics from the archive of BAGGU textile patterns. The book also includes a conversation between founders Emily Sugihara and Ellen Vanderlaan, in which they discuss the company's beginnings, history and evolution. The conversation was guided and edited by Emily Segal, cofounder of the think-tank and consultancy Nemesis, and art collective K-Hole.Trade ReviewStraddled the line well between product and book. Art Issues Press,U.S. The Invisible Dragon: Essays on Beauty and Other

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis“If this book of shocking intelligence and moral hope is read widely and above all well, word for word, it will help the world.” —Peter Schjeldahl An expanded edition of Hickey’s controversial and exquisitely written apologia for beauty—championed by artists, reviled by art critics, and as powerful as ever 30 years on The 30th anniversary cloth edition brings back into print Dragon’s four essays on beauty and commingles them with newly discovered essays by the MacArthur Foundation “genius.” Art by Caravaggio, Bellini, Velázquez, Raphael, Warhol and Mapplethorpe is complemented by Hickey’s tributes to Dolly Parton and Richard Pryor, outing of John Rechy’s gay novel Numbers, essays on the art of writing and witty analysis of paintings by Ed Ruscha. An afterword by Hickey’s friend and Dragon’s editor queers the brash, heterosexual gambler as it situates the creation of Dragon squarely within the AIDS plague. At the time, the book made beauty visible under the looming presence of death and bodily decay. Today, Hickey’s prescient diagnosis of the “therapeutic institution” resonates even louder and artists respond by harnessing beauty as a source of meaning and of joy. Dave Hickey (1938–2021) was one of the preeminent arts and cultural writers of the turn of the 21st century. A MacArthur "Genius" Fellow known as the "beauty guy" in the popular press, Hickey opened A Clean, Well-Lighted Place gallery in Austin, Texas, in the 1960s, before becoming executive editor at Art in America magazine. In the 1970s, he was a songwriter in Nashville, Tennessee, where he coined and helped create the "Outlaw country" music movement. By the 1990s, Hickey had made a home in Las Vegas, from where he regularly traveled to speak with audiences worldwide.Trade ReviewDave Hickey was a genius. Not because of what he did for me but because of the way he was, the way he felt and the wonderful way he worded things, he was beyond compare. I liked him, I loved him and yes, I had a crush on him too. Long live the memory and the words of Dave Hickey. -- Dolly PartonWhen Dave Hickey died last fall at the age of eighty-two, he left behind a singular contribution to the history of art writing, along with a badly bruised reputation, both routinely called 'iconoclastic' for lack of anything more precise. The magazines he’d published in since the 1960s hardly took notice. The perfunctory obituaries that did appear treated him as a kind of Hunter S. Thompson of the contemporary art world, ensconced as he was in Las Vegas at the height of his fame. But alongside the bluster of 'the bad boy of art criticism' was a neon Walter Pater of the Southwest who almost single-handedly remade the practice of art writing with his first two collections, The Invisible Dragon and Air Guitar. -- Jarrett Earnest * New York Review of Books *If the book of shocking intelligence and moral hope is read widely and above all well, word for word, it will help the world. -- Peter Schjeldahl * "Author of Hot, Cold, Heavy, Light, 100 Art Writings 1988-2018" *Dave Hickey's prose transports are like an eye attached to a butterfly attached to a rocketship—which is to say, lucidity uncannily yoked to both a deft lightness of touch and sheer gangbusters propulsion: the down-to-earth, time and again, taking off and taking flight. The generosity of the man's verve—the suppleness of its profusions—can get to be downright ravishing. On top of which, the guy's really funny. -- Lawrence Weschler * Author of Seeing is Forgetting the Name of the Thing One Sees *

KAHL Editions El Cimarron y su Fandango

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisDuring the colonial period in the Americas, a Cimarrón was a Black fugitive slave who lived a free life in isolated corners of society. After independence, when slavery was abolished in Mexico, the Afro-descendant population began to group mainly in two parts of the Mexican territory: Veracruz and the Costa Chica. It was in this last one where I had my first encounter with Afro-descendant culture and where I was aware of its importance and invisibility in the history of Mexico; despite being recognized as the third root, it was not until 2015 that the process for its recognition within the constitution began. Driven by after the first encounter I had with the community, I started the research that gave rise to this project, in which photography was the tool that allowed me to translate into images some historical elements that refer to the current construction of the identity of those who are called Afromexicans. El Cimarrón y su Fandango speaks to us in an allegorical way of the past of a Black community and its journey through colonial history, its integration into the territory and its current sense of identity within it. Book SynopsisThis fantastic book showcases the prestigious Embroiderers’ Guild’s huge collection of embroidered birds through the ages. Featuring photographs taken especially for the book, items are shown in full along with detailed images that show off the stunning birds at their best.Trade ReviewThis fabulous book highlights some of the exquisite works done using birds as their inspiration. This aesthetic book provides an eye opener into the surprisingly wide-ranging, attractive and interesting embroideries which can be created showcasing birds. Embroidered Treasures: Birds provides a real learning experience allied to the sheer pleasure of viewing the superbly photographed examples Dr Collinge has selected from the Collection. The embroideries range from small mats, sachets and panels through bags, tea cosies and cushion covers to wall hangings, sleeve bands and samplers. * SEW Region Magazine (December 2019) *You'll be amazed by the stunning array of colours inside this book! Sewing enthusiasts will be blown away by the history of the embroiderer's guild and its collection - learn all about the use of metal thread, birds in art and every stitch variation you could possibly think of! * Sew Magazine (December 2018) *Following on from Embroidered Treasures Flowers, which examined floral embroidery, Annette Collinge turns her attention to our feathered friends, selecting examples that intrigue as well as inspire. She highlights pieces from cultures around the world, dating from the 17th century to the modern era - from realist renderings to fanciful interpretations, from practical items to contemporary artworks - and which take in a whole wealth of techniques from Berlin wool work to modern machine embroidery. The Guild was founded in 1906 and since then its collection, now housed at Bucks Co Museum, has grown substantially. This book offers amazing insight into its many riches. * Embroidery, The Textile Art Magazine (Nov/Dec 2018) *Subtitled 'Exquisite Needlework of the Embroiderers' Guild Collection', this book showcases the best embroidered birds from the extensive collection. The embroideries cover a period dating from the 17th century to the present day. From abstract to naturalistic, the variety is wonderful and the book covers many forms of embroidery from crewelwork to contemporary. The imagination, skill and detail in portraying birds will provide much inspiration to everyone interested in this subject. There is a brief history of the Embroiderers' Guild followed by twelve chapters: Monochrome Embroidery; Metal Thread; Applied Materials; Machine Embroidery; Silk Embroidery; Evenweave Backgrounds; Bags; Art; Samplers; Fanciful; Birds From Many Lands and finally Stitches. A short paragraph of text opens each section, with each photographed piece of work having a title such as 'Crewelwork Panel' and descriptive text plus technique, date, place and size highlighted in a box. On some pieces, it also gives the maker's name and who gifted the piece to the collection. All pieces have a EG number. I found the techniques of most interest, but this is not a book of techniques - it merely informs us of the technique used. Work as varied as rug hooking, felt applique and numerous embroidery techniques are included from all over the world. There is some overlap of the chapters, for in Chapter One on Monochrome, you will find Metal Thread and Silk Embroidery even though these have chapters of their own. Almost every manner of bird is to be found. This is a wonderful resource on how birds have been used to inspire embroidery over the centuries. Recommended. -- Karen Platt * www.karenplatt.co.uk *Way back in January, I reviewed the book, Embroidered Treasures: Flowers, a wonderful compilation of embroidery pieces held by the Embroiderers’ Guild of the UK. Like the Flowers book, Embroidered Treasures: Birds promises to be an exciting and inspiring look at a wide array of embroidery projects from different eras that feature our feathered friends. If you love birds and you love embroidery, and if you’re fascinated by the history of embroidery, you will love having this book in your library! Better yet, it is such a pretty book that it doesn’t need to be consigned to a bookshelf. It’s a perfect “coffee table” book, one that you can pick up and browse through at leisure, gleaning striking bursts of beauty and helpful bits of information every time you meander through it. I’ve had the pleasure of perusing an advanced copy of the book, thanks to Search Press, and it is everything you’d want – beautiful, informative, and inspiring! Throughout the book, you’ll find embroidered birds from a wide spectrum of artistic eras, covering a wide variety of techniques. All sorts of birds populate the book, from stylized birds to realistic renditions of birds in needlework. With each featured embroidery, you’ll find dates, provenance, and all the details of techniques and materials used to create the embroidery. What I love about this new series of books from the Embroiderers’ Guild of the UK is that you can learn much from each book, just by studying the pieces in it. No, it’s not an instructional project book – you won’t learn how to recreate, step-by-step, the embroidery pieces you see. But you will learn a lot about the history and development of embroidery, and you’ll see, at a glance, what kinds of techniques can be used to produce a certain look or style of embroidery. This is very helpful, if you have ideas in mind for a project, but you’re not sure what techniques to use to get the look you want. Soooo…. bird lovers, historical needlework buffs, and general embroidery enthusiasts – this book’s for you! -- Mary Corbet * www.needlenthread.com *I was very keen to read this book being a member of the Embroiderers' Guild for about 25 years and a lover of bird embroideries in particular. The book does not disappoint. Stunning photography enhances every page with information about each piece, the technique, the date and place of origin, together with the actual size of the piece of work. It is pure joy discovering how each piece was formed in a plethora of techniques, including works gathered from across the world across the centuries up to the present-day including birds by the author Dr. Annette Collinge. Techniques are well explained but not in great depth so the book means you can dip into it for short or long spells of reading time. It is perfect to inspire you in making your own work or simply just to enjoy the skill and craftsmanship of the embroideries. As others have commented, it is not a book to tell you step by step how to do it yourself; it is a book to love for its amazing photography and know that it will give you hours of enjoyment by reading it. You cannot fail to be inspired by looking through this book, whether your love is for hand or machine embroidery, mixed media or traditional - this book has it all. Highly recommended. -- Jude Lovatt * Amazon *If you love birds and love embroidery, I highly recommend this book. It’s full of colourful eye candy in the form of quality images, along with interesting and useful text relating to the pieces. It covers a wide range of embroidery techniques and provides inspiration to anyone interested in the subject. It’s a wonderful resource book showing how birds have been used to inspire embroideries over the years. A definite favourite in my collection. -- Gwenda Culkin * Amazon *Beautiful coffee table book, full colour pictures and history of embroidery. Doesn’t have patterns or how to do any of the stitching but love it. -- Ellen Rose Perkins * Amazon *Lovely informative book, well written with excellent photography. -- Diana Connor * Customer review *'Embroidered Treasures - Birds' by Dr. Annette Collinge is truly a treasure to behold. The artwork and skill are absolutely stunning and something I imagine all artists strive to work towards with their own creative work. This book is made on behalf of the Embroiderers' Guild and displays some beautiful examples of the creativity of people through time. It has a large table of contents split into different sections, e.g. on bags, on silk, samplers, metal threads, etc. It also has an index. Each piece has an EG number, a date, size and a few paragraphs about the piece. The pieces range from intermediate to way, way, way advanced! It is a shame there are no mini tutorials in the book, but this is purely showing the historical pieces they have in their collection. I absolutely love the peacock piece on page 23, and the Berlin work Budgerigar on page 90. It gives you so much inspiration when you look at the pieces and how they have included birds in so many different ways. I love the Cockerel Sleeve Band with the two cockerels looking at each other, hand embroidered in bold silk threads. I would highly recommend this book if you enjoy looking at embroidery and are looking for some inspiration - there is a lot to be had from this book. 10/10 -- Kaiserin Maggs * Amazon *I loved the photography in this book and there are some exquisite pieces of work in it. If you want a reference book containing stunning pieces of art, then this is it. It’s also very informative about the history of embroidery and the different techniques used throughout the ages and from around the world. I especially liked the collage owl kit. The page explains how embroidery kits were very popular in the 1970’s and 1980’s and reminded me of my first embroidery project that I completed in the 80’s as a child. If you are unable to attend an exhibition, then this is the next best thing. -- Joanne Gardener * Amazon *This is such an informative book with some stunning photography of many pieces from the Embroidery Guild's collection that feature birds. Each piece is accompanied by information on technique, date of make and the area that it comes from. This is not a technique book that will teach you how to create these wonderful pieces, but certainly such a lot of inspiration here that will encourage you to experiment and find your own project to work on. As a needlecrafter and general crafter this book is right up my street, however it's the type of book to leave readily available as non crafters will find it just as interesting. It was interesting to see my husband, definitely a non crafter, pick the book up for a token flick through and half an hour later he was still engrossed and commenting on the photographs. Love it and will be looking out for more. -- Louise Blackah * Amazon *I have received my embroidered birds’ books. I am so pleased with the look of the covers, which are bright, colourful and eye-catching. The instructions are so clear and helpful that anyone can understand. Also, some are for beginners and you can do more intricate ones as you feel able. Lovely templates too. The birds are done in such beautiful colours, some of which I would never have thought of putting together which is so helpful as I am not good at selecting colours to put together. Great book all round well worth buying. -- Pam Butterfield * Facebook *Table of ContentsHistory of the Embroiderers' Guild and Its Collection Introduction Embroidered in Monochrome The Use of Metal Thread Applied Materials Made by Machine Embroidered in Silk Embroidery on Even-weave Backgrounds Embroidery on Bags Birds as Art Samplers and Samples Fanciful Birds Birds from Many Lands Stitches and More Stitches Index

  • The Kew Book of Painting Orchids in Watercolour

Search Press Ltd The Kew Book of Painting Orchids in Watercolour

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisVivienne Cawson's luminous painting style and considered use of flat or patterned backgrounds gives her work a contemporary, beautiful feel all of its own. Published in association with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, as a celebration of their annual Orchid Festival, this stunning book teaches you how to paint a selection of orchids in watercolour. The book contains a thorough techniques section that guides you through Vivienne's decision-making, colour-matching and painting process. It teaches you how to capture form with speed and confidence, practise painting different leaves, flowers, and roots and create different textures with paint. The book contains exercises that will hone your skills and encourage your artistic intuition, followed by three complete step-by-step projects that feature a range of flowers in wild and still-life settings. The paintings feature touches of watercolour pencil and crayon, along with panels of gouache, which complement the delicate watercolours. The book is interspersed with images from the Kew Art Collection, showcasing the rich variety and beauty of this much-loved family of flowers.Trade ReviewYou might think that painting orchids was a subject too specialised to be of general interest. They are, however, one of the most varied flower types and, of course, some examples are highly prized by collectors. Not all types are exotic, though, and there's a good chance you have some in your own garden or at least locally. I realise I'm probably going to have to work quite hard to convince you that a book about a single flower type is one you'll want to read, but Vivienne Cawson helpfully comes to my aid. She is not, she explains in her introduction, a flower painter by nature: "My heart would sink when my tutor appeared laden with flowers of suggested that we go to the Botanical Gardens." Her background is textile design and geometric shapes, which means she brings a fresh eye to the subject. It gets more interesting when she mentions her influences, including Shirley Trevena and Elizabeth Blackadder, as well as developing interest in gardening. Suddenly, she has the materials to work with. So, what we have here is a new approach to the subject that provides endless opportunities. The result is a book which is endlessly fascinating and which tells you far more about flower painting in general than you'd ever expect. Although this book is backed by Kew, it is by no means a botanical guide - which is something of a surprise in itself. Rather it's about colours and shapes - in simple terms, it's about the art, not the flowers. Now do you see why I'm getting a bit excited? In practical terms, the introductory sections contain succinct yet thorough information on colour, tonal values, positive and negative space, shape, brushwork and a whole lot more. It's all thoroughly practical and there are plenty of examples and exercises to get stuck into. It's actually quite easy to forget you're dealing with orchids specifically as you learn about stems, leaves and petals - even roots - and how everything complements something else. It's all rather good fun, which is perhaps the most important thing. It all comes together in just three full projects, which should be enough unless you're really into orchids. The main thing is that you'll have had a thoroughly good time learning about colours, shapes, contrast and harmony - a well-tended garden, in fact. -- Henry Malt * Paint magazine *I really enjoyed this book by Vivienne Cawson. Firstly, it appealed to my looser style of watercolour painting and I picked up some useful tips on mixing colours, especially greens, and expanding my palette. Her useful section on techniques has encouraged me to try the addition of water soluble crayons to my paintings to enhance and contrast colours. I particularly like the way Vivienne has written the book, interspersing information with useful tips and quotes and writing in a personal and friendly voice. Of course, the information about the various orchids is fascinating and an important addition to her text. -- Julie Mellor * Amazon *Perfect for spring, The Kew Book of Painting Orchids in Watercolour shows readers how to recreate these beautiful blooms. Written by Vivienne Cawson and published in association with the Royal Botanic Gardens, the book covers techniques, decision making, colour matching and painting with exercises to help readers hone their skills. * Craft Focus *Orchids might seem like a rather over-specialised subject for a whole book, but they are one of the most varied species around and offer a wide variety of shapes and colours. As a result, this has plenty to offer the more general flower painter and Vivienne Cawson's methods of working and teaching have much to commend them. Whilst being recognisable blooms, these are not detailed botanical illustrations, in spite of the Kew connection, which might suggest they would be. Rather, Vivienne takes advantage of the opportunities variety has to offer and explores colour, tone, shape and setting in ways that have broad appeal and can be applied to any flower or plant. After discussions of palettes, leaves, flowers and even roots, there are three detailed projects where the quality of the illustrations makes following the instructions particularly straightforward. This is a book which promises much and delivers at every stage. * The Artist *The striking beauty and huge variety of orchids make them a fascinating subject for the painter, and in her new book, The Kew Book of Painting Orchids in Watercolour, Vivienne Cawson shows you exactly how to paint them. Published in association with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew as a celebration of their annual Orchid Festival, the book teaches you how to capture form with speed. Well-planned exercises will develop your skills, encouraging you to practise different leaf shapes and colour palettes, and three complete step-by-step projects feature flowers in both wild and still-life settings. As well as watercolour, the paintings also include watercolour pencils, crayons and gouache. Images from the Kew Art Collection are interspersed with Vivienne's work. * Leisure Painter, February 2020 *Paint inspiring, luminous orchids using this practical, contemporary guide from artist Vivienne Cawson, in association with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. It teaches you how to capture form with speed and confidence, practise painting different leaves, flowers, and roots, and create textures with paint, before completing three step-by-step projects. * Crafts Beautiful *Table of ContentsPreface 6 Introduction 8 Tools and materials 10 Choosing complementary elements 14 Inspiration 18 My approach 22 The world through your eyes 26 How to start 28 Understanding colour 34 My palette 37 Local and reflected colour 40 Using a range of tonal values 42 Matching colours 44 Basic watercolour tips and techniques 48 Creating pattern and texture 52 Flower techniques 56 Leaf techniques 60 Root techniques 64 Composition tips 66 Project 1 70 Project 2 86 Project 3 98 Over to you... 127 Index 128

His grasp of light, location and atmosphere make these photographs ones that border on the unique." - Amateur Photographer Sir David Attenborough has described Richmond Park as "A very special place" - and with good reason. This vast oasis of green, just eight miles from the centre of London, is an ecological pearl in the midst of sprawling urbanisation. The park, most famous for its herd of 630 Fallow and Red Deer, is not only Europe's largest park, but is as big as the seven other royal parks combined. Since King Charles I enclosed the park in 1637, it has provided a haven of tranquillity and diversion for all its visitors. Today, some 77 million people pass through its gates each year. In this beautiful book, Alex Saberi captures Richmond Park's unique blend of rare and diverse wildlife, plant life and rolling landscapes. From a crow perching on a bench in the morning haze to a foolhardy Labrador, breaking impatiently away from its owner, the photographs capture its inherent beauty as well as those rare moments of wildlife action and majesty that only yield themselves to the most patient and knowledgeable of observers.

Book Synopsis‘I can’t make my work without the collaboration of the community. Their willingness to allow their story to be told is an important part of what I see.’ Sabelo Mlangeni Many of the stories that Sabelo Mlangeni tells are of communities on the periphery of society. Taking time to build relationships, he gains trust and, eventually, access to inner circles and sacred spaces. Based in South Africa, he has focused on Johannesburg (Big City, 2002–15), as well as the rural areas surrounding his hometown of Driefontein (At Home, 2004–9), and the country towns that ‘freedom and opportunity have somehow skipped past’ (Ghost Town, 2009–11). People are at the heart of Mlangeni’s photography, often those who have been pushed to the so-called ‘margins’, or whose stories could have easily gone untold, such as the street-sweepers of Invisible Women (2006) and the hostel residents in Men Only (2008¬–9). In My Storie (2012) and No Problem (2013) he reveals the legacy of apartheid in the stark divisions that remain between racially segregated communities; and in Country Girls (2003–9) he explores gender roles in portraits ranging from the glamorous to the tender and intimate. Mlangeni’s work seeks to recentre themes of friendship, love and joy in the face of ever-present risk. Above all, his images tell stories of seeking out your people, choosing a family and building a home, wherever you find yourself. The Tate Photography Series is a celebration of international photography in the Tate collection and an introduction to some of the greatest photographers at work today. With the direct involvement of living photographers in collaboration with photography curators, these books showcase the best and most notable images taken across the globe, from city streets to seashores, moving across landscapes and through subcultures, in a visual travelogue of our world. Each book contains a new conversation between curator and photographer and is prefaced with a short introduction. The theme for the first four titles is Community and Solidarity. The character and sense of place at the heart of rural towns and villages is under threat. By drawing people away from town centres, these developments erode the sense of community and public life. Book SynopsisIf you’ve ever dreamt of designing and building your own home, this book is for you. Becoming a ‘self-builder’ doesn’t necessarily mean learning to build a house physically from scratch. Anyone can be a self-builder – you can do so without ever having to lay a brick yourself. This book is designed for homeowners and self-builders, whether aspiring or on the brink of starting a project. It provides a jargon-free, step-by-step guide to the process of designing and building your own home, distilling all of the practical information needed to make your dream house a reality.
