Book SynopsisAs our climate, ecological and social crises converge, urgent action is needed to maximize our chances of survival. A new commercial approach is possible but it requires a systemic shift, with companies learning to operate as part of a wider 'ecosystem', allowing fashion to restore what it has taken.Regenerative Fashion presents a roadmap for new ways of doing fashion. To keep our planet safe, we must cut production and end our dependency on fossil fuels. We must also create dignified livelihoods for the millions of people working in the industry. Monacelli Press Milton Glaser: POP
Book Synopsis'Milton Glaser's designs changed the way we see the world.' - Gloria Steinem An overview of the work of illustrator and designer Milton Glaser during the 1960s and 70s From 1954, when he co-founded the legendary Push Pin Studios, to the late ’70s, Milton Glaser was one of the most celebrated graphic designers of his day, whose work graced countless book and album covers, posters, magazine covers, and advertisements, both famous and little-known. Glaser largely defined the international visual style for illustration, advertising, and typeface design and interest in his legacy continues unabated, with modern creatives acknowledging his influence; for example, in 2014 Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner enlisted Glaser to design the ad campaign and branding for the show’s final season. His renowned work garnered solo exhibitions at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Creator of the iconic ‘I love NY’ logo (featuring a heart symbol in place of the word ‘love’) and cofounder of New York magazine, Glaser received numerous accolades and lifetime achievement awards. Across thousands of works across all print media, he invented a graphic language of bright, flat color, drawing and collage, imbued with wit. This collection of work from Glaser’s Pop period features hundreds of examples of his design that have not been seen since their original publication, demonstrating the graphic revolution that transformed design and popular culture.Trade Review‘Milton Glaser: Pop is a banquet of a book and an enormous pleasure to peruse.’ – Eye Magazine ‘[A] visual feast.’ – NPR Named a best book of 2023 by The New Yorker, NPR, and The Wall Street Journal ‘More than 1,100 color images included in this broad overview, [with] Glaser’s wit ever-present.’ – The Associated Press ‘...the genius of Milton Glaser . . . with an eye to timeliness, intelligent text and gorgeous illustration.’ – The Wall Street Journal ‘A knockout coffee table book celebrating the often gorgeous, always compelling artwork of the graphic arts giant.’ – The Village Voice ‘The wide-ranging materials provide an in-depth look into Glaser’s bold, instantly-recognizable art style.’ – 6sqft ‘A look at Milton Glaser’s impact during the 60s and 70s.’ – Creative Review ‘No art director’s work was more influential than that of Milton Glaser. . . But his real achievement lies in what this anthology reveals: a breathtaking empire of imagery that encompassed two decades and was felt in later years.’ – The New Yorker ‘[A] gorgeous book featuring his work during the 1960s and 1970s.’ – Design Milk 'Milton Glaser's designs changed the way we see the world.' – Gloria Steinem 'Hundreds of Glaser’s works, unseen since their original publication, feature in print once more to show the legendary designer’s portfolio.' – It’s Nice That 'Whoever coined the phrase ‘the best things come to those who wait’ was onto something - for this Milton Glaser book is well worth the wait. Filled with his iconic graphics, this book is an absolute must-have for graphic design enthusiasts.' – Grazia 'A vibrant overview.' – Designboom 'Milton Glaser: Pop collects hundreds of his illustrated pieces and usefully funnels them into broad categories. . . That structure clarifies that he had a few go-to devices that he relied upon often and consistently, but it also reveals just how much you can do with a basic idea once you get good at it. And Glaser was very, very good at it.' – Curbed 'No art director’s work was more influential or instantly identifiable than that of Milton Glaser. The extent of that style, which adorned books and records and movies – and is revealed in a new anthology from Monacelli, courtesy of Steven Heller, Mirko Ilić, and Beth Kleber, titled simply “Milton Glaser: Pop” – is astounding.' – The New Yorker 'A groovy new book featuring the iconic designer’s 1960s and ’70s work.' – SVA 'Glaser’s designs are synonymous with the ’60s and ’70s. [This] new book shows just how influential his style really was.' – Fast Company 'Across thematic chapters, the book features 1,100 images displaying Glaser’s influential graphic style of bright flat colour combined with visual wit across book and album covers, posters, magazines and advertisements many of them not seen since their original publication.' – Design Week

Monacelli Press Transform: Promising Places, Second Chances, and
Book Synopsis'Beautifully presented and accompanied by abundant photographs and plan diagrams, the entry masterfully explores Berke’s modernist inclinations, her minimalist style, and her firm’s savvy handling of spaces and materials. Architectural students and practitioners will find much to appreciate.' - Publishers Weekly TenBerke publishes Transform with Monacelli, an argument for the regenerative reuse of old buildings. Adaptive Reuse is how architecture helps us grow into a changing world. It combines the best of old and new—through renovation, restoration, regeneration, reimagination, and repair. A practice of sensitive stewardship and creative conservation, it is what turns the obsolete into the germane. With TenBerke’s most recent publication with Monacelli, Transform: Promising Places, Second Chances, and the Architecture of Transformational Change, the studio shows that creatively and visibly repurposed places are also where people feel especially empowered to make new beginnings in their own lives. Transform illustrates how TenBerke, in all its transformative designs, reveals the signs and signatures of adaptation, composes a continuity in which the after doesn’t erase the before, and designs places where people are able to leave new traces—and make their mark. The adaptive reuse in Transform goes beyond the usual before and after of renovation and conversion, into the long and lively places of buildings, which are always being remade by the people who use them. Transform includes Against Historic Preservation, an argument for the creative reuse of old buildings by Deborah Berke, founder of TenBerke and dean of the Yale School of Architecture; along with Promise, a critical narrative essay by award-winning design writer Thomas de Monchaux. It also includes The Environmental Case for Adapting Buildings at Scale, a report by urban scientist Karen C. Seto who looks to building reuse as a means to manage the untenable rate of urbanization of our natural environments. Transform includes, in the words of artist Titus Kaphar, “Time Is That Collaborator. . .” a conversation between himself and Berke inspired by TenBerke’s design for NXTHVN, a community arts center that he founded in New Haven Connecticut, bringing former industrial buildings to new life. With editorial and creative direction from TenBerke Senior Principal Arthi Krishnamoorthy, Transform presents accessible and actionable case studies of adaptive reuse projects, revealing the thinking that guides each one: from NXTHVN, where an arts incubator and community center was born out of disused factories; to the Yale School of Art, where an old swimming pool became a gallery and classroom; to the pioneering 122 Community Arts Center in downtown Manhattan, where an old public school became a new performance space and civic crossroads, to the 21c hotel in Oklahoma City, where one of the Ford Motor Company’s first assembly plants became a hotel and event space, catalyzing the revitalization of a new livable neighborhood. In Transform, we see that the architecture of adaptation offers a new approach to old places that is at once sensitive and bold, at once conscious of histories and legacies, yet optimistically forward-looking to new possibilities. This is the architecture of second chances, of promising places, and of transformational change.Trade Review‘In her new book, architect Deborah Berke builds a case for giving old buildings new life.’ – Bloomberg CityLab ‘A new tome that outlines the New York studio's extensive experience and sustainable approach around adaptive reuse.’ – Wallpaper ‘A manifesto and survey of contemporary practice by one of the leading offices in this domain.’ – Aspire Design + Home ‘Beautifully presented and accompanied by abundant photographs and plan diagrams, the entry masterfully explores Berke’s modernist inclinations, her minimalist style, and her firm’s savvy handling of spaces and materials. Architectural students and practitioners will find much to appreciate.’ – Publishers Weekly

Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd Executions: 700 Years of Public Punishment in
Book SynopsisA fascinating record of how London and Londoners were shaped by nearly 700 years of public executions. More frequent in London than in any other city or town in Britain, these morbid spectacles often attracted tens of thousands of onlookers at locations across the capital and were a major part of Londoners' lives for centuries. From Smithfield to Kennington, Tyburn to Newgate Prison, public executions became embedded in London’s landscape and people’s lives. Even today, hints of this dark chapter in London’s history can still be seen across the city. Featuring the lives and legacies of those who died or who witnessed public executions first hand from 1196 to 1868, this book tells the rarely told and often tragic human stories behind these events. It includes a range of fascinating objects, paintings and documents, many from the Museum of London’s collections, such as the vest said to have been worn by King Charles I when he was executed, portraits of ‘celebrity criminals’, and last letters of the condemned. From the sites of execution to the thriving ‘gallows’ economy, the book reveals the role that Londoners played as both spectators and participants in this most public demonstration of state power over the life and death of its citizens.Trade ReviewIt’s a fantastic new book in its own right and well worth checking out. * History Answers *Table of ContentsIntroduction 1. Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd Inspiring Walt Disney: The Animation of French
Book SynopsisAccompanying an exhibition at the Wallace Collection, Inspiring Walt Disney explores the influences of the art and architecture of France on Walt Disney and his studio artists, highlighting in particular the Disney classics of hand-drawn animation, Cinderella (1950) and Beauty and the Beast (1991). Pairing preparatory material from these films – including concept art for talking furniture and fairy-tale castles – with masterpieces from the eighteenth century reveals hidden sources of inspiration and allows us to appreciate the extraordinary talents behind Disney animated films and French decorative arts. Just as the dynamic, twisting movements of the Rococo sought to breathe life into what was essentially inanimate – silver, porcelain, furniture – so too did Disney animators seek to create the illusion of movement, action and emotion. Illustrated with innovative works by artists such as Mary Blair, Hans Bacher and Peter J. Hall, and the animated and anthropomorphic furniture, Sèvres porcelain and gilt bronze of rococo designers, the catalogue explores the shared creative roots of these two seemingly disparate artistic realms and looks to revitalise the feelings of excitement, awe and marvel, which both eighteenth-century craftsmen and Disney animators sought to spark in their audiences.Table of ContentsForeword Inspiring Walt Disney - Helen Jacobsen Selected Works - Helen Jacobsen with Wolf Burchard The Discovery of Europe Early Animation Cinderella Architecture of the Imagination The Swing Eighteenth-Century Dress Animating the Inanimate Further Reading Picture Credits Index

Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd Frans Hals: The Male Portrait
Book SynopsisThis is the first book to concentrate on Dutch Golden Age painter Frans Hals’s highly innovative approach to male portraiture. Frans Hals is one of the greatest portrait painters of all time and, together with Rembrandt, is one of the most eminent seventeenth-century Dutch artists. Published to coincide with the Wallace Collection’s exhibition of the same name, Frans Hals: The Male Portrait explores the artist’s highly innovative approach to male portraiture, from the beginning of his career in the 1610s until the end of his life in 1666. This book includes the first in-depth study of Hals’s great masterpiece, The Laughing Cavalier, from 1624. The extravagantly dressed young man, confidently posed with his left arm akimbo in the extreme foreground of the picture and seemingly penetrating into the viewer’s space, has been charming audiences for over a century. Book SynopsisA beautifully illustrated book that explores William Blake''s relationship with Europe against a backdrop of political turmoil.Responding to revolution and war in Europe, enslavement and exploitation in European colonies, and repression and reaction at home in Britain, William Blake (17571827) produced an astonishing body of work that combined criticism of the contemporary world with a vision for universal redemption. Blake has always been seen as a distinctly English figure but, in reality, his art at all periods of his career is profoundly involved with Europe, as a source of his images and as a vision of the past, present and future of humanity. ACC Art Books Skins: Gavin Watson
Book Synopsis"Skins by Gavin Watson has been argued as being 'the single most important record' of 1970s skinhead culture in Britain, who have possibly been one of the most reviled yet misunderstood of the nation's youth subcultures." — Daily Mail "Gavin Watson documented his friends as they came of age at the heart of a misunderstood community." — i-D "Gavin Watson’s cult documentary photo book Skins chronicles the radical and inclusive spirit which originally animated the emerging skinhead culture of 70s Britain." — Dazed Skins by Gavin Watson is arguably the single most important record of '70s skinhead culture in Britain. Rightly celebrated as a true classic of photobook publishing, the book is now reissued in a high-quality new edition under close supervision from the photographer. The scores of black and white shots offer a fascinating glimpse into a skinhead community that was multi-cultural, tightly knit and, above all else, fiercely proud of its look. These are classic photographs of historical value. “What makes Gavin’s photos so special is that when you look at them, there’s clearly trust from the subject towards the photographer, so it feels like you’re in the photo rather than just observing.” - Shane Meadows (Director of award-winning film This Is England). The book, described by The Times as “a modern classic”, forms an important visual record of its time and has attained cult status in the genre, alongside works by other eminent photographers such as Derek Ridgers and Nick Knight. “Arguably one of the best and most important books about youth fashion and culture ever published.” – Vice Magazine Trade Review"Skins by Gavin Watson has been argued as being 'the single most important record' of 1970s skinhead culture in Britain, who have possibly been one of the most reviled yet misunderstood of the nation's youth subcultures." - Daily MailInterview with Gavin Watson: "This book is a remarkable document of a group of kids...working class boys and girls growing up out in the suburbs—with a style, and a music, and a look, and an anger and a joy to call their own—It's called Skins and it's the photography of Gavin Watson" - BBC Robert Elms Radio Show"Gavin Watson documented his friends as they came of age at the heart of a misunderstood community." - i-D"Gavin Watson’s cult documentary photo book Skins chronicles the radical and inclusive spirit which originally animated the emerging skinhead culture of 70s Britain." - Dazed"Watson's work is especially important for a number of reasons: it is, first of all, one look at the scene from inside, and therefore for sure documentary interest; also, looking at his clicks, you can examine the evolution of interests of the crew, from the punk and skinhead era up to the years of raves. RIBA Publishing Urban Lighting for People: Evidence-Based
Book SynopsisLighting has the power to illuminate and enhance our experience within the built environment. The light that enables people to travel around their neighbourhood or their city; the light which they see themselves and their neighbourhood under. Research into the effects of urban lighting on behaviour, environmental psychology and social interaction is developing at a rapid rate. Yet, despite the affect it has on our daily lives, the practical application of this research is a relatively untapped resource. There has been a persistent trend to use lighting as a tool for urban regeneration and many major urban lighting projects around the country are underway but there is more that can be done on a variety of scales. This book explores the needs and experiences of people at night and how these can be addressed by public lighting. It will give readers the confidence to develop more sophisticated lighting plans and add value to their projects. Case studies provide in-depth analysis of real-life projects and will help the reader to understand lighting designers’ own experiences, including post-installation observations. Written in an accessible style by an array of experts, this is an essential book for practitioners, academics and students alike, that will enable you to put the research in to practice and develop better lighting for better places. Ashmolean Museum In Praise of Hands: Woodcuts by Naoko Matsubara -
Book SynopsisThis creative collaboration between artist Naoko Matsubara and poet Penny Boxall celebrates in words and colours the beauty and variety of the human hand. The series of dynamic woodcuts at the heart of this book was initially inspired by the artist’s wonder at the busy hand movements of her baby son and grew into a wider celebration of hands in all their extraordinary variety – hands engaged in music, sport, prayer, or creative acts. The woodcuts convey a sense of joy and energy, whether exploring the symbolism of gestures, playing with form and colour, or expressing a mood or emotion. Penny Boxall’s new poems were specially written to accompany the woodcuts. In their clarity and playfulness, their range of mood and their deceptive simplicity, they form a remarkable creative synergy with the art works. During the coronavirus pandemic the subject of hands – and the idea of touch or its absence – has taken on a new significance. Many of the images in the series have taken on powerful new meanings: healing hands, hands finding ways to occupy hours of furlough, or hands clapping in support of those working to keep us safe. We are particularly delighted that this elegant book has been designed by Yoshiki Waterhouse, Naoko Matsubara’s son, whose baby hands were the original inspiration for the series.

RIBA Publishing Many Voices: Architecture for Social Equity
Book SynopsisDo you know how to create beautiful buildings that truly promote social change? Architects need to understand how to design for social equity, but too often this is presented as a choice between work that does good and work that looks good. When done well, building for social equity can directly enhance the formal, experimental and creative language of architecture. Renowned architects Sara Caples and Everardo Jefferson, who have been designing for underserved multi-cultural communities in New York for decades, provide thought leadership that is deeply rooted in practice. By urging architects to approach equity projects with an open mind, the volume highlights the need to dig deep into the diverse culture of local neighbourhoods. It provides techniques to encourage listening, communicating and fully engaging with users, resulting in imaginative design responses that draw on all the tools that the architect possesses. Packed with interviews from established and up-and-coming designers, and highly illustrated case studies from all over the world, this accessibly written book serves both as a point of inspiration and a challenge to Western-centric ways of working. Ultimately, it explores how listening to the aspirations of diverse communities enriches designs and broadens the architectural language of all involved. Featuring: - International case studies from Austria, Brazil, Bolivia, China, Egypt, India, USA and many more- Interviews from leading designers, including: Tatiana Bilbao, Wanda Dalla Costa, Andres Lepik, Xu Tiantian, Li Xiaodong, Sara Zewde - Guidance on a range of topics, from integrating narratives to working with colour, communicating with communities and stakeholders to ethical practice.Table of ContentsForeword Acknowledgements Introduction Part One: Social Equity Chapter 1: Social Equity Chapter 2: Cast Your Net Part Two: Space for Beauty Chapter 3: Narratives and Counter-Narratives Chapter 4: Tectonic Ethics Chapter 5: Between Indoors and Out Chapter 6: Elements of Delight Chapter 7: Gesamtkunstwerk Conclusion: All Architecture is Social Further Reading Index

RIBA Publishing Old Buildings, New Ideas: A Selective
Book SynopsisSome architectural transformations are modest, some are revolutionary. Shining a light on the hidden side of the accepted narrative of the history of architecture, this book explores works which transform existing buildings to build a way forward, through adaptations, additions and visual shifts. Examining 30 buildings across Europe, North America and South America, spanning from the early Middle Ages to the end of the 20th century, it demonstrates the creative possibilities of working with existing buildings. The book reveals how formal inventions can shape architecture and our environment over time in a built world constantly in a state of becoming. As we face a climate emergency, it taps into our deep cultural knowledge about the inventive use and re-use of buildings. Generously illustrated with architectural plans and over 300 colour images, it provides an alternative to the dominant view which sees conservation and preservation of historic buildings as a 20th century creation.Table of ContentsForeword by Robert Bruegmann Introduction Chapter 1: 6th to 15th Century: Roman Ruins as Shelter 1.1 Lucca, Nimes, Arles & Florence Chapter 2: 15th to 18th Century: Continuity and Change 2.1 Stylistic Overlays 2.1.1. Edition Reuss Magical Tattoos & Scarification: Spiritual Skin
Book SynopsisText in English & German. This is a photographic masterwork in two parts exploring the secret world of magical tattooing and scarification across the tribal world. Based on one decade of tattoo anthropologist Dr Lars Krutak''s fieldwork among animistic and shamanic societies of Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Melanesia, this book journeys into highly sacred territory to reveal how people utilise ritual body modification to enhance their access to the supernatural. The first part delves into the ancient art of Thai tattooing or sak yant that is administered by holy monks who harness the energy and power of the Buddha himself. Emblazoned with numerous images of dramatically tattooed bodies, this chapter provides tattoo enthusiasts with a passport into the esoteric world of sak yank symbols and their meanings. Also included is an in-depth study into the tattooing worlds of the Amerindians. From Woodlands warriors to Amazonian shamans, tattoos were worn as enchanted symbols embodied with tutelary and protective spirit power. The discussion of talismanic tattooing is concluded with a detailed look at the individuals who created magical tattoos and the various techniques they used. Krutak writes about many tribal tattoo designs permeated with various forms of power and explains what these marks mean for the people who wear them. Part two is an absolute must-read-and-see for anyone seeking knowledge about the religious meanings of tribal scarification. The rituals, techniques, and spiritual iconography of scarmasters in Benin (Bétamarribé), Papua New Guinea (Kaningara), and Ethiopia (Hamar) expose a relatively undocumented world of permanent body symbolism created through painful and bloody rites of self-sacrifice and restraint.

New Heroes & Pioneers The Art of Hat-Making: Italian craftsmanship from
Book SynopsisCappellificio Cervo is to the world of millinery what the analog camera is to the world of photography: a place of return to fine art and inimitable craftsmanship. It is the artistic integrity of this historic institution dating back to 1897, that photographer Giovanni Previdi has documented so beautifully in How to Make a Hat. This book takes its readers on a journey through Italian fashion history - hat-making history, to be exact - and all through the lens of his SX-70 Polaroid camera. Previdi spent several weeks following the ins and outs of the company's hat-making process, focusing his camera on the ritual of seemingly simple gestures at the hand of makers whose craft was honed over generations. All this, in the picturesque Cervo valley of the Biella province, where the pure water plays an important role in the making of both ordinary and high fashion hats. Capturing the essence of the textures and colour intensities found in the natural fibres used to create unique pieces, The book reflects on the importance of reembracing quality and durability to counter the global fast fashion, like his Polaroids, Previdi highlights the art of patience and perfection to confront conveyor-belt philosophies.

Leuven University Press Francis Alys. The Nature of the Game
Book SynopsisThe first multidisciplinary analysis of one of the most impactful and popular contemporary artworks of recent years. In 1999, a short video of a solitary boy kicking an empty bottle up a hill in Mexico City became the first instalment of Children’s Games, a series of works by artist Francis Alÿs (b. Antwerp, 1959). The ongoing project, which now numbers around thirty-five works, has gradually given shape to an extensive collection of videos of children at play. For almost twenty-five years, Alÿs and his collaborators Félix Blume, Julien Devaux, and Rafael Ortega have been travelling around the world to document the distinctive ways in which children interact with each other and their physical environment. They have gone from remote villages in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Afghanistan, Venezuela, and Nepal to the mountains of Switzerland and metropoles like Hong Kong and Paris, but have also visited the war-torn city of Mosul in Iraq, the border between Mexico and the United States, and the strait of Gibraltar that divides Africa and Europe. The resulting images are standing proof of the seriousness of play and of children’s stunning powers of resilience in the face of conflict. This volume provides a multidisciplinary perspective to the many layers of Children’s Games. It includes an interview with Francis Alÿs and Rafael Ortega, a series of essays by well-known scholars and art critics, curatorial statements, and a logbook related to the presentation of Children’s Games at the Venice Biennale of 2022.Contributors: Francis Alÿs (artist), Gerard-Jan Claes (filmmaker, artistic director of Sabzian), Tim Ingold (anthropologist, University of Aberdeen), Zeynep Kubat (art historian, curator and writer), Karen Lang (art historian, Royal Society of Arts), Rafael Ortega (artist), Rodrigo Perez de Arce (architect, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile), Juan Martín Pérez García (Network for the Rights of Children in Mexico (REDIM), Giulio Piovesan (journalist and photographer), John Potter (media education, University College London), Virginia Roy (curator at the University Museum of Contemporary Art of the National Autonomous University of Mexico), Stéphane Symons (professor of philosophy, KU Leuven), Hilde Teerlinck (Han Nefkens Foundation /curator of the Belgian Pavilion at the Venice Art Biennale 2022).Ebook available in Open Access.Table of ContentsPrefaceFrancis Alÿs. Hannibal Books Raphael Revolution in Tapestry Design
Book SynopsisThe spectacular beauty of Raphael's tapestries as you have never seen it before In 1515, Pope Leo X commissioned the Italian painter Raffaello Sanzio (14831520), now generally known as Raphael in English, to make the cartoons for a series of ten tapestries with scenes from the lives of Saints Peter and Paul. This commission played an instrumental part in the stylistic development of the Flemish tapestries, a marvellous illustration of princely splendour in the sixteenth century. Under Habsburg rule, Brussels soon emerged as a leading manufactory for exquisite products. Raphael's designs are among the most successful series in the history of tapestry production. This publication shows the enormous richness of the tapestries through dozens of details. It accompanies a collection exhibition of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, home to the former imperial tapestry collection, from 26 September 2023 to 14 January 2024.
