MASP Gran Fury Art Is Not Enough
Book SynopsisA sweeping look at the history of the artist collective whose graphic poster designs helped define the visual culture of AIDS activismGran Fury (198895) was a New Yorkbased activist artist collective that emerged from ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power), an organization founded in 1987 to raise awareness about the HIV/AIDS crisis in the United States through political activism. Named for the vehicle favored by the New York City police, Gran Fury formed to summon a sense of collective indignation. The collective's innovative graphic design campaigns were mobilized in ACT UP demonstrations to awaken the public to the disdain, neglect and silence of Ronald Reagan's administration during the epidemic. The group produced posters, newspapers, stickers, photographs, videos and billboards that were circulated to transform perceptions about HIV/AIDS, interrogate ineffective public policies and underreported government data, interrupt misconceptions disseminated by the media, confront the morality of religious institutions, and alleviate the stigma and discrimination faced by people living with HIV/AIDS. They worked closely with other activist groups, including the Silence=Death Project, whose posters featuring a pink triangle came to be a defining visual of the AIDS crisis. This richly illustrated catalog is a comprehensive survey of the collective's body of work. It includes unpublished essays, historical interviews, rare pamphlets, photographs and ephemera that altogether chart the development of a new visual language for effecting social change. Gran Fury: Art Is Not Enough is an indispensable reference for the study of the intersection of activism and the arts in the late 20th century.

Karolinum,Nakladatelstvi Univerzity Karlovy,Czech Republic Baroque Prague
Book SynopsisA lavishly illustrated guide to Baroque Prague. Lushly illustrated with more than two hundred color plates, including both historical images and contemporary photographs of architectural exteriors, Baroque Prague is an excursion through Prague from the defeat of Czech Protestants at the Battle of White Mountain in 1620 to the philosophical era of Enlightenment in the eighteenth century. Art historian Vít Vlnas explores both the material and spiritual transformations the city went through during this boisterous period, treating the Baroque epoch as a cultural phenomenon vital to the current genius loci of the great Central European capital. He guides readers through both the city itself and equally important Baroque monuments outside of the historical city center. A highly readable introductory study, as well as a work for experienced scholars of the history of Bohemia, Baroque Prague is an exciting homage to Europe’s great “city of a hundred spires,” and shows how a place’s storied past informs its present soul.Trade Review“Unquestionably, a concise, refined, and exceptionally readable introductory study that—with its well-selected catalog of architectural and artistic monuments—not only illuminates the historical and philosophical background of Prague’s baroque but also serves as a reliable guide to the sites of a city that owes much of its development to this remarkable age.” -- Lubomír Slavícek, head of the Centre for Visual Studies, Masaryk University

Damiani Alexey Titarenko: Nomenklatura of Signs
Book SynopsisAlexey Titarenko created the series of collages and photomontages that became Nomenklatura of Signs from 1986-1991, under the strict Soviet rule. This new publication presents the series in its entirety for the first time. Working in secret, Titarenko conceived the project as a way to translate the visual reality of Soviet life into a language that expressed its absurdity, in a hierarchy of symbols that, together, formed a nomenclature — or, in Russian, nomenklatura, a term for the system by which government posts were filled in the Soviet Union. Drawing inspiration from the aesthetics of Kazimir Malevich, Aleksandr Rodchenko, and other artists of the early 20th century Russian avant-garde, Titarenko captures an uncanny, darkly comic world in which language is controlled and subverted much like the Newspeak of George Orwell’s novel 1984. The book includes an introduction by writer Jean-Jacques Mari and art historian Gabriel Bauret, as well as a critical interpretation of the series by art historian Ksenia Nouril. The book is designed by Kelly Doe Studio, NYC.

Damiani Michael Stipe
Book SynopsisPortraits of resilience and vulnerability, with QR-linked audio of comments and anecdotes from Stipe In this third, photo-based chapter of the Damiani series, Michael Stipe explores strength, courage and vulnerability, pausing the project abruptly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. What follows is a lockdown interpretation of a 21st-century portrait, with a resolute desire to show our resilience, our humour, our collective fortitude and our adaptability. Through unique QR codes, the book is enriched by free audio content which deepens and enhances the discovery of the images. Scanning the QR code opens access to the “making-of” anecdotes and the intention behind the book, as told by Stipe. As an undergraduate studio art major at the University of Georgia, Michael Stipe (born 1960) studied photography and painting before leaving school upon the formation of R.E.M., the band for which he served as frontman and singer/songwriter until its dissolution in 2011. The sensibility that he began to develop during his time as an art student transferred to the spectrum of his work for R.E.M., from art directing all graphic, video and stage design, to writing, composing and performance, and his iconoclastic personal style. Stipe’s visibility as a media figure in the popular culture of the 1980s and ’90s left an indelible mark on the aesthetic trends of the time, many of which have trickled down to contemporary culture.

MASP Catherine Opie Genre Gender Portraiture
Book SynopsisNearly four decades of work from the photographer who redefined the expression of gender in contemporary queer portraitureA leading voice in contemporary photography, Catherine Opie has been known for her portraits of the queer scene in California since the late 1980s. A fundamental element of Opie's work is the observation of different gender performances through a critical revision of the genre of portraiture. Her photography emphasizes how portraiture has the power to both reinforce and deconstruct conventional and binary expressions of gender. The title of this publication and the MASP exhibition it accompanies is based on the double meaning of the word gênero in Portuguese, meaning both gender and genre. For her first solo show in Brazil, Opie enters into dialogue with the tradition of the portraita way of representing the human figure that dates to the 15th century in the Westproducing an archive of diverse presentations of gender and sexuality. Around 60 photographs from her most iconic series are displayed alongside a selection of around 15 emblematic portraits from MASP's collection. Strongly marked by figuration and the formal constraint of portraiture, the juxtaposition of these works accentuates the dialogues, tensions and reformulations that Opie's photographic oeuvre proposes.Catherine Opie was born in Ohio in 1961 and is currently a professor of photography and the chair of the art department at UCLA. Opie's work has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. She has had solo exhibitions of her work at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; St. Louis Art Museum; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, among many others.

Damiani 100 Churches of Venice and the Lagoon
Book Synopsis100 Churches of Venice and the Lagoon is a photographic project started by Merizalde in 2014, alongside a broader body of work that began in the city in 2008. The color photographs in this book document religious temples from every "sestiere" of Venice, and the smaller towns of the Venetian lagoon. Starting in every neighborhood in the city, and navigating the Venetian lagoon-from Murano to Burano and Torcello, from Pellestrina to Chioggia, and deep into the northern lagoon to areas like Lio Piccolo, Mesole and beyond-he found and photographed their respective churches whether they remained in service or were deconsecrated or repurposed. Following their architectural similarities, the book presents a layout that favors the façade, relying on this subtle repetition for artistic sustenance and balance. A poignant essay by Marina Gasparini Lagrange provides an account tthat combines her personal experience as a former resident with a balanced historical perspective. 100 Churches of Venice and the Lagoon presents an in-depth view of Venetian culture and history through its place of worship in a book of exceptional appeal.

Damiani No Mames
Book SynopsisNo Mames is a celebration of the flourishing LGBTQ+ individuals who are energizing the Mexico City’s art and design industries 'In her new book, Mayan Toledano shows a tender side of the Mexico City queer scene' - Vogue (USA) 'Immortalizing queer Mexican artists in places they can fully call their own, Toledano offers a vision of the world through a radical lens of play and unmistakable tenderness that perfectly embodies the book’s title.' - Hyperallergic 'With subjects sometimes shot over several years, intimacy was built organically. This imbues the photos with a special familial quality, the kind of photos taken by a close friend or a lover. Thanks to Mayan’s careful touch, No Mames unfolds as a document of queer joy and togetherness.' - i-D Through her reportage, fashion and portrait work, Israeli Moroccan photographer Mayan Toledano shares the stories of her queer community, exploring their interior lives with empathy and respect. Her photography is characterized by its colorful dreaminess, and she often captures her young subjects in their bedrooms. Although Toledano is based in New York, she has found herself increasingly drawn to Mexico City, a place she considers a creative safe haven. No Mames pays tribute to the local LGBTQ artists, designers and creatives who are currently contributing to Mexican culture—many of whom are couples, roommates, childhood friends. The series’ portraiture follows a two-fold process: first, she captures her subjects as they present themselves in everyday life; then, she photographs them as they would like to appear, facilitating the construction of their fantasy selves. This collaborative act of wish-fulfillment sometimes coincides with real-life transformations; for instance, she follows one of subjects, Havi, over the course of her gender transition, during which she underwent breast augmentation surgery.

Mousse Publishing In Medias Res 3 Postproductions
Book SynopsisWith Postproduction, the third and final issue of In Medias Res, Fluentum''s research project on the history of its premises concludes by literally taking stock of both the production of and productivity inherent in moving images. At the core of this publication are new essays on film shot in the building: beginning in the mid-1990s, mere months after the US abandoned its West Berlin headquarters, these films formed part of reunified Germany''s nascent creative industry, and continued to be made throughout the 2000s. This chronology is speculatively extended by time-based artworks that were commissioned as part of Fluentum''s multiyear program series In Medias Res: Media, (Still) Moving, which this publication both documents and further explores through artistic contributions. Though varying in their commerciality, audience, and aesthetic, they similarly employ the material and ideological architecture of the space as a matrix for creating history, allowing one to uniquely trace how the past becomes real through the present.

Five Continents Editions Matteo Pugliese
Book SynopsisThis book offers a review of Matteo Pugliese’s art over the past 20 years. The figures the Milanese sculptor creates are distinguished by their great power, revealing an inner torment that can no longer be disguised. The men depicted in his sculptures are all trying to break free of the wall that holds them, to throw off their limitations and assert their value as individuals in the hopes of escaping from dull uniformity and social and family expectations. These are people who are attempting to achieve a painful rebirth by struggling against materialised restraint — a wall — that seeks to prevent them expressing themselves, growing and therefore existing. The artist chooses to portray the moment of greatest effort, of supreme tension, the instant when a man regains control of his life and struggles against what is holding him trapped so as to restore a sense of purpose in his life. The carefully studied poses of his figures recall ancient models, in the same way as the material from which they are fashioned is also ancient. Luigi Spina’s lens knowingly lingers on these figures’ troubled birth and enables the reader, admirer, and art historian to acquire an intimate understanding of the sculpture and even to feel a part of the travails and manifest vulnerability that grip all of humanity.
