Hoaki Landscape Painting with Watercolours and Other
Book SynopsisThis hands-on guide to landscape watercolour and other drawing and painting techniques takes readers on a series of excursions from the sea to the city, mastering the use of line and colour along the way. A useful manual for drawing on the spot, it offers valuable insight into how to carefully observe the landscape before us and choose what about it we want to express; how to select and prioritize visual information; and how to apply drawing techniques to create the illusion that our compositions have been arranged effortlessly, as if by nature itself. In each of the book’s five sections (Colour and Materials; Horizontality and Depth; Graphics, Shadows and Light; Lines and Perspective; and Urban Lines and Colours), the author suggests some of the questions we should ask ourselves when observing a landscape. We will learn how to tell a story while painting, prioritizing colour ratios and graphic elements over faithful representation in the final result. Through these engaging exercises, readers will soon be able to manage compositional line and color effectively as they experiment with different drawing, painting and landscape representation tools and techniques.

Arquine Javier Senosiain - Organic Architecture
Book SynopsisTo survey the work of Mexican architect Javier Senosiain (born 1948) requires a journey through a particular trajectory in the history of architecture, from Frank Lloyd Wright and Bruno Zevi to Alvar Aalto, Eero Saarinen and Jørn Utzon. These pioneers of organic modernism faced the 20th century’s mechanistic, functionalistic and rationalistic proposals with a vision that sought to revive an organic relationship between humans and their environments. Senosiain’s concept of “Organic Architecture” follows in this tradition. Throughout his career, Senosiain’s work has explored the relations between user, site and architecture in spaces that echo natural forms and conditions. “The concept of an organic habitat,” he writes, “is the creation of spaces adapted to man that are also similar to a mother’s bosom or an animal’s lair.” This volume surveys Senosiain’s work since the 1970s and his concept of “Organic Architecture.”

Silvana Olafur Eliasson
Book SynopsisThe Curious Desert was the first solo exhibition of Olafur Eliasson's work in the Gulf region, staged in March 2023.The exhibition brought together a dozen new site-specific installations located in the desert, near the Al Thakhira Mangrove in Northern Qatar, and an extensive gallery presentation at the National Museum of Qatar of artworks created over the artist's career. The outdoor installation consisted of 12 temporary pavilions that Eliasson considers to form an artistic laboratory in the desert. Many of the experiments inside the pavilions utilised natural phenomena, such as wind, water, and sunlight, to create artworks that emerged over the course of the day or, as the seasons change, over the duration of the exhibition. At the National Museum of Qatar, the gallery exhibition featured a variety of artworks from different periods of Eliasson's career and in a wide range of media, including expansive light installations, complex geometric models, photo series from Iceland, watercolours, optical devices and an extensive map of the research areas that occupy the artist and his studio. The themes that run throughout the two-part exhibition relate to the broad interests expressed in Eliasson's wider practice.Text by Olafur Eliasson, Bouthayna Baltaji, Lina Patmali, Aspa D. Chatziefthimiou, Reem Al Selawhi, Hashim Sarkis. Photographs by Ali Faisal Al Anssari, Iwan Baan, Anders Sune Berg.Text in English and Arabic.

River Books A Life in Shadows
Book SynopsisOne of the oldest storytelling traditions, shadow theatre combines puppetry with music, philosophy, history, storytelling, fashion, ritual, religion, and education. While each nation in Southeast Asia has its own distinct culture, shadow theatre is a shared theme. Many of the masters make their own puppets, play all the musical instruments, learn long texts in ancient languages, sing, study movement, and perform for long period of time in what is one of the most difficult and challenging art forms. Most of the performers are farmers, fisherman, factory workers, or teachers by day and artists by night.Through documentary photography, A Life in the Shadows by Constantine Korsovitis, illustrates the sophistication and value of shadow theatre and its creators, and the author has been capturing the spirit and multiplicity of shadow theatre since 1999 in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Cambodia, the common thread being the use of the Hindu epics of the Ramayana and the Mara Mahabharata as a source stories.
