Book SynopsisLAND ART: A COMPLETE GUIDE TO LANDSCAPE, ENVIRONMENTAL, EARTHWORKS, NATURE, SCULPTURE AND INSTALLATION ART A fully illustrated guide to land and environmental art. A newly updated and revised edition of our best-selling book. For the land artist, the whole planet is an artist''s studio. The land artist ranges over the whole globe. A desert, a beach, a field, a forest becomes a studio, a place of creative activity. This means the very texture and colour and shape and dampness and springiness and strength and size of moss, for instance. Or a stone. Or a crevice in a rock formation. The way the light falls on a patch of grass, the little bits of dead, yellowish grass on top of the newer, green grass. Pine cones, closed-up. Flowers turning sunward in the late afternoon. These are the things land artists deal with in making art. These are the actualities that artists employ when they create artworks. ? This book explores all of the major land, environmental and earthwork artists of the past 40 years, including James Turrell and his vast volcano site Hans Haacke''s Conceptual art Michael Heizer''s Mid-West earthworks Robert Smithson and his giant spiral, entropic earthworks Christo''s wrapped buildings and islands, Robert Morris''s environments Walter de Maria''s Romantic Lightning Field David Nash''s stoves, stones, trees and North Wales environments Hamish Fulton''s walks and words Dennis Oppenheim''s concentric snow circles Richard Long and his art of walking Andy Goldsworthy''s natural, spontaneous, eco-friendly sculptures Alice Aycock''s mysterious underground mazes Mary Miss''s sunken pools and pavilions Wolfgang Laib''s delicate, luminous pollen spreads Nancy Holt and her observation sculptures and the enigmatic floor sculptures of Carl Andre. William Malpas has written books on Richard Long and land art, as well as three books on Andy Goldsworthy, including Andy Goldsworthy In America. Malpas''s books on Richard Long and Andy Goldsworthy are the only full-length studies of these artists available. Includes new illustrations, bibliography, notes. 380 pages. • THE Art of Andy Goldsworthy

Crescent Moon Publishing THE Art of Andy Goldsworthy

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisTHE ART OF ANDY GOLDSWORTHY This is the most comprehensive and detailed study of British artist Andy Goldsworthy, and is the only full-length exploration of Goldsworthy and his art available anywhere. The book has been completely rewritten and brought up to date for this new edition. Andy Goldsworthy makes land or earth art out of, among other materials, stacks of rocks, or stalks tied together, or mud thrown into rivers or poppy petals wrapped around boulders. His art is a sensitive, intuitive response to nature, light, time, growth, the seasons and the earth. Fully illustrated, with a revised text. Bibliography and notes. 348pp. ISBN 9781861714398. www.crmoon.com EXTRACT FROM THE CHAPTER ON GOLDSWORTHY''S LEAFWORKS It is the leafworks that are the most colourful of Andy Goldsworthy''s sculptures. What the leaf sculptures show is how beautiful the colours of nature are: Goldsworthy shows the viewer these subtle colours by contrasting one leaf with another. Maple patch grouped the red/ orange/ yellow of Japanese maple leaves together; Poppy leaves contrasted the red poppy leaves against the mid-green of an elderberry bush; a Stone Wood sculpture of 1992 consisted of poppy leaves wrapped around a hazel branch, the red constrasting vividly with the wet green leaves; Dock Leaves interwove red leaves in green grass stalks. Two sycamore leafworks of 1980 and 1981 are very simple: a leaf black from cow shit is placed against pale Autumn leaves; another leaf, bleached white, is set down on a bed of dark leaves. He pins together two colours of sycamore leaves (sycamore is a favourite Goldsworthy medium) in Sycamore leaf sections (1988), and hangs the line of leaves from a tree. Shot with the sun behind them, the photograph of the leaves shows them glowing green and gold, the two classic colours of poetry and alchemy. REVIEW ON AMAZON A happily received gift. It''s worth the price for one who wants a scholarly while earthy (sorry, couldn''t help it) approach to the work. There''s a quirkiness about the writing style that is engaging and honest. I''m glad I have the book and will reread it as I purchase other books on Goldsworthy where the work is shown via great photography. REVIEW ON AMAZON This is a chatty informational book. It has stories of many artists that have been associated with Andy Goldsworthy in his long career as a contemporary nature sculptor. If you are looking for a personal history this is a book for you. REVIEW ON AMAZON I''m no expert on visual art, nor would I claim to be, but I found this to be a useful book, and the only one I''ve been able to find about the work of Andy Goldsworthy. The author has taken the time to round up a large amount of varied source material which makes this book well worth seeking out.

  • The Art of Katsuhiro Otomo

Crescent Moon Publishing The Art of Katsuhiro Otomo

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisTHE ART OF KATSUHIRO OTOMO by Jeremy Mark Robinson  This is a book about the genius Japanese artist Katsuhiro Otomo (b. 1954). Best-known for the Akira manga of 1982-90 and the Akira movie of 1988, Otomo is also an all-round artist who writes fiction, writes and directs short and feature movies, produces commercial art, and design projects. Among Otomo’s works are the movies Steam-Boy, Mushishi, Metropolis, Memories and Roujin Z, and manga such as Domu, The Legend of Mother Sarah, Hansel and Gretel and Sayonara Japan. The works of Otomo have been celebrated with awards – he won the Kodansha Comic-Strip Award in 1984 for Akira, and the Science Fiction  Grand Prix Award in 1983 for Domu.  There are very few genuine auteurs in Japanese animation: the animation industry, like all filmmaking on a large scale, is truly collaborative. However, you can definitely see elements in the films directed and written and supervised by Katsuhiro Otomo that are auteurist: Otomo has his own style, visually, but also his own concerns, thematically, politically and psychologically.  Akira is a giant of a movie that opens at full blast: this movie rocks from shot one. It really rocks – at a far higher level of intensity than any comparable movie, including all of the classics regularly trotted out as hi-octane movie-making. Akira is clearly one of those movies where the filmmakers have thrown everything they can think of into the mix, and it’s a movie in which the filmmakers have given their all.  Meanwhile, the manga of Akira exceeds all expectations – about storytelling, about what a comicbook or manga is, about how an action-adventure-fantasy story can work in a contemporary setting, and how a story can be genuinely thrilling, genuinely political, genuinely wild and epic.  In short, Akira ticks all of the boxes: (a) it has action and spectacle in spades, (b) it has fascinating characters and situations, (c) it is incredibly exciting, (d) it is very unusual, sometimes downright eccentric and out-there, (e) it is highly politicized, (f) it has plenty to say about living in the modern world, about contemporary, advanced capitalist societies, and (g) it establishes its own world, its own raison d’etre, its own philosophy with supreme self-confidence.  Akira is the manga to top all manga, to end all manga. It is a manga designed to go further, louder and crazier than any other manga. And it does! Akira delivers on its promise: it really is every bit as great as everybody says it is.  The Art of Katsuhiro Otomo includes chapters on: Katsuhiro Otomo’s manga and movies; lengthy chapters on every aspect of the Akira movie (animation, sound, music, voices, story, themes, etc); the story of the Akira manga; Otomo’s inspirations and inflfiuences; the contemporary anime industry; and a section of the views of critics and fans.  Fully illustrated, including many images from Otomo’s whole output, the Akira movie, the Akira manga, Otomo’s other works in comics and cinema, and Otomo’s inspirations.  Hardcover – full colour laminate cover.  This edition is revised, and contains extra illustrations.  Bibliography, resources and notes. 644 pages. www.crmoon.com

  • Fashion: A Philosophy

    Reaktion Books Fashion: A Philosophy

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisDonatella Versace and Jean-Paul Gaultier, Yves Saint Laurent and Giorgio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana and Gucci: fashion is at once a familiar yet mysteriously elite world that we all experience, whether we're buying a new pair of jeans, reading Vogue, or watching the latest episode of America's Next Top Model. Lars Svendsen dives into this world in "Fashion: A Philosophy", exploring the myths, ideas, and history that makes up haute couture, the must-have trends over the centuries, and the very concept of fashion itself. "Fashion" opens with an exploration of all the possible meanings encompassed by the word fashion', as Svendsen probes its elusive place in art, politics, and history. Ultimately, however, he focuses on the most notable type of fashion: clothing. With his trademark dry wit, he deftly dismantles many of the axioms of the industry and its supporters. For example, he points out that some of the latest fashions shown on catwalks aren't actually fashionable' in any sense of the word, arguing that they're more akin to modern art works, and he argues against the increasingly popular idea that plastic surgery and body modification are part of a new wave of consumerism. Svendsen draws upon the writings of thinkers from Adam Smith to Roland Barthes to analyse fashion as both a historical phenomenon and a philosophy of aesthetics. Whether critiquing a relentless media culture that promotes perfect bodies or parsing the never-ending debate over the merits of conformity versus individual style, Lars Svendsen offers an engaging and intriguing analysis of fashion and the motivations behind its constant pursuit for the new.Trade ReviewFashion is an elegant and relatively easily read tour de force along academic and literary roads into the notion of fashion ... History is combined with contemporary material, academic views with concrete aesthetics; designers are used as examples and are treated on a par with great thinkers - nothing is too big or too small to be included in his considered analyses ... A very convincing book, recommended to everyone who is interested in fashion, sociology and philosophy in a practical or an academic context. Weekend-Avisen, Copenhagen

  • Caspar David Friedrich and the Subject of

Reaktion Books Caspar David Friedrich and the Subject of

Book SynopsisCaspar David Friedrich (1774 1840), the greatest painter of the Romantic movement in Germany, was perhaps Europe's first truly modern artist. His melancholy landscapes, often peopled by lonely wanderers, represent experiments towards a radically subjective art, one in which, as Friedrich wrote, the painter depicts not what he sees before him, but what he sees within him. Yet in their awesome power to capture the individuality of visible forms Friedrich's pictures also accept and express the irredeemable otherness of Nature. Winner of the 1992 Mitchell Prize for the History of Art, this compelling and highly original book is now made available in a compact pocket format. Beautifully illustrated, "Caspar David Friedrich and the Subject of Landscape" is the most comprehensive account ever published in English on this most fascinating of nineteenth-century masters.Trade ReviewThere's a haunting coda to Koerner's scholarly analysis of the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, and his place in art history ... This has many reproductions more true to Friedrich's winter colouring than I've seen before. The Guardian Provides insights not only into the nature of Friedrich's art, but also into the whole predicament of art in the early nineteenth century ... It is a book that should be read by all who have an interest in the art of the period Burlington Magazine This is a model of interpretative art history, taking in a good deal of German Romantic philosophy, but founded always on the immediate experience of the picture ... It is rare to find a scholar so obviously in sympathy with his subject The Independent One of the best books about the work of a single artist that I have read for a long, long time. • Constantin Brancusi

    Reaktion Books Constantin Brancusi

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAcknowledged as one of the major sculptors and avant-garde artists of the twentieth century, Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957) also remained one of the most elusive. His mysterious nature was not only due to his upbringing in Romania - which, at the time, was still regarded by much of Europe as a backward country haunted by vampires and werewolves - but also because Brancusi was aware that myth and an 'aura of otherness' appealed to the public. This self-mythology is embodied in his white atelier in Montparnasse, Paris. In "Constantin Brancusi", Sanda Miller looks beyond the mythology of the artist to show us Constantin the Romanian student, as well as Brancusi the celebrated artist. Using new material, including private correspondence from Brancusi's archive in Paris, works from Romania, and Brancusi's own photos of his studio, the author weaves together and interprets a wealth of information, bringing to life his early years in Romania, his move to Paris and his years at his studio. She relates how his art scandalized the Paris salon, yet also explores how his work connects with the folk art of his homeland. She also provides colourful evocations of Brancusi's relationships with colleagues, dealers, friends and lovers. An innovative reassessment of Brancusi's life and work, Sanda Miller's perceptive book allows Brancusi to take his rightful place among the most important of the intellectual personalities who shaped twentieth-century modernism.Trade Review'Sanda Miller has been working on Constantin Brancusi since the 1970s, and her latest contribution to the literature on one of the twentieth-century's greatest sculptors is a detailed and well-researched biography. A new body of archival material became available to Brancusi scholars in 2001 ... Such major gifts to art historians require careful unpacking, and Miller has done an excellent job of digging deeply and thoroughly into hundreds of documents and photographs. The resultant book is centred on primary source material, dispelling long-held myths surrounding Brancusi and attaining perhaps as authentic a portrayal of his life and work as will ever be possible.' - Slavonic and East European ReviewTable of ContentsIntroduction 1 Hobita: Brancusi's Childhood 2 Craiova: Apprenticeship, l894-98 3 Bucharest: Academy of Fine Arts, l898-l902 4 Paris 5 Impasse Ronsin: Brancusi 'at Home' 6 Montparnasse: Brancusi and Friends 7 Tirgu-Jiu 8 Last Works, Last Friends, Legacy References Bibliography Acknowledgements Photo Acknowledgements

  • The Alhambra

    Profile Books Ltd The Alhambra

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Alhambra, the 'red fort' on its rocky hill above Granada, with its fountained courts and gardens, and intricate decoration, has long been a byword for exotic and melancholy beauty. In a stimulating new book in the 'Wonders of the World' series Robert Irwin, Arabist and novelist, examines its engrossing and often mysterious history. Built by a bloody and threatened dynasty of Muslim Spain, it was preserved as a monument to the triumph of Christianity. Much of what we see is the invention of later generations. Its highly sophisticated decoration is not just random but full of hidden meaning. Even its purpose - palace or theological college - is not always clear. Its influence on art, and on literature, orientalist painting and Granada cinemas, Washington Irving and Borges, has been significant. Robert Irwin enables us to understand that history fully. The Wonders of the World is a series of books that focuses on some of the world's most famous sites or monuments. Their names will be familiar to almost everyone: they have achieved iconic stature and are loaded with a fair amount of mythological baggage. These monuments have been the subject of many books over the centuries, but our aim, through the skill and stature of the writers, is to get something much more enlightening, stimulating, even controversial, than straightforward histories or guides.Trade ReviewThis highly readable study provides both a welcome demystification and a fascinating reinterpretation * The Scotsman *For those who know his work, it will confirm his genius and to others it will act as an excellent introduction * Observer *Fascinating -- Malise Ruthven * Sunday Times *A lively, yet clear-headed introduction encouraging a more thoughtful and critical approach to the monument * Literary Review *Irwin's book is both a perfect introduction to the place and a first-rate account of its history * Guardian *He brings the majestic ruins to life' * Newsweek *This book captures and conveys the mysterious attractions of the Alhambra * Doris Lessing *It is ... greatly to Robert Irwin's credit that he has written a book on the subject that is sensible, scholarly, astringent and witty. This issue reveals how old buildings can be updated to realise innovation through renovation, and features three essays and eleven projects that elaborate this perspective. The three essays discuss regenerative architecture in Pakistan that create contemporary examples of traditional architecture, the revitalisation of old buildings in Hong Kong, China for heritage conservation—along the concept of updating the “hardware” and “software” of the building—and the sharing and regeneration of historical heritage spaces in old towns in Xiamen, China. The 11 projects, accompanied with full-colour photos and text descriptions, highlight architectural works that showcase the theme of renovation and innovation across projects that include a house, library, chapel, and clinic, to reveal how these buildings embody sustainability and innovation, and re-energise cities.Table of ContentsEditorial 3 ARTICLE The Concept of Sharing and Regeneration in Contemporary Architecture in Pakistan: A Case Study of Har Sukh Mansion 4 Amna IQBAL, Asma ASLAM, Farhana RASHEED, Umer MALIK Beyond (Designing) the Place 13 WU Tsan Sum Roger Optimized Strategies Concerning Sharing and Regeneration of Heritage Spaces in Old Urban Quarters — Taking Xiamen Yingping Historical Urban Area as an Example 25 WANG Shao Sen, ZHANG Ke Han, ZHAO Long, QUE Quan Hong PROJECT The House of Remembrance Singapore Residence 35 Neri&Hu Design and Research Office, K2LD Greenery Curtain House 41 HGAA Tonami Public Library 49 MIKAMI Architects, Oshida Architects & Engineers Co., Ltd Chapel of Sound 57 OPEN Architecture Phetkasem Artist Studio 63 HAS Design and Research The Pilot Section of Maozhou River Ecological Belt 70 Tongji Architectural Design (Group) Co., Ltd (TJAD) Park Hyatt Niseko Hanazono, Chapel 77 Nikken Sekkei Ltd, Fujita Corporation Zhangjiakou Library 81 Tanzo Space Design Office Takenaka Clinic 89 TSC Architects Stella Fiore 94 IROJE KHM Architects New Campus Library of Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture 103 Tongji Architectural Design (Group) Co., Ltd (TJAD)

Book SynopsisIt was nearly half a century ago that After the Battle first began visiting the battlefields of the Second World War, matching up photographs of the period with their present-day comparisons. Our 'then and now' theme caught on with like-minded readers around the world, all interested to know what the places looked like today - as we say 'keeping history alive'. Searching for the locations where the wartime captions were imprecise, took much time, and there were occasions when a whole day might be spent in pin-pointing where a particular photograph had been taken. No stone was left unturned if a particular comparison was important to illustrate the story, even if it meant a special visit to take one photo. Most of the battlefields have changed over the years so it has been our intention where possible to illustrate many of the places with new colour comparisons rather than use those in the original story, many of which were taken in the old black and white days. Since we launched our first edition in August 1973, After the Battle has travelled around the globe and has covered hundreds of battles - over 750 at the last count – and taken thousands of photographs, covering major operations down to individual exploits. Selecting a cross-section of just a few from the stories that we have covered has not been easy, but we hope that you will find some of your favourites within the pages of this volume, covering the best of After the Battle. 750 illustrations

Book SynopsisDiscovering the Historic Houses of Snowdonia presents the results of a successful project to establish the date and social context of some of the earliest houses in Snowdonia. This partnership project between the Dating Old Welsh Houses Group and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales involved many householders and about 200 local people in an ambitious exercise in community archaeology. The project has dated houses using the scientific technique of tree-ring dating, which can be accurate to the year and even the season of felling. The book presents the revealing, and often surprising, results of the project along with many photographs and plans. There are some twenty-five house histories, researched by members of the Group, including studies of medieval houses with open halls, innovative storeyed houses, and mature complexes. The housing culture of Snowdonia is shown here to be innovative and complex rather than simple and derivative. In sixteenth-century Snowdonia people chose to build for the future, and the older houses of north-west Wales display social ambition as well as the value placed on craftsmanship.

Through evocative imagery and a wealth of rarely seen material, this book provides a window into an idealistic fantasy of the Soviet capital that was never realised and has since been largely forgotten.Focusing on six unbuilt architectural landmarks, Imagine Moscow explores how these projects reflected changes in everyday life and society following the revolution, during one of the most fascinating periods of the twentieth century. Large-scale architectural plans, models and drawings are placed alongside propaganda posters, textiles and porcelain, contextualising the transformation of a city reborn as the new capital of the USSR and the international centre of socialism.

Book SynopsisThe twentieth century offered up countless visions of domestic life, from the aspirational to the radical. Whether it was the dream of the fully mechanised home or the notion that technology might free us from home altogether, the domestic realm was a site of endless invention and speculation. But what happened to those visions? Are the smart homes of today the future that architects and designers once predicted, or has ‘home’ proved resistant to radical change? Home Futures: Living in Yesterday’s Tomorrow –accompanying a major Design Museum exhibition of the same title–explores a number of different attitudes toward domestic life, tracing the social and technological developments that have driven change in the home. It proposes that we are already living in yesterday’s tomorrow, just not in the way anyone predicted. This book begins with a lavishly illustrated catalogue portraying the ‘home futures’ of the twentieth century and beyond, from the work of Ettore Sottsass and Joe Colombo to Google’s recent forays into the smart home. The catalogue is followed by a reader consisting of newly commissioned essays by writers such as Dan Hill and Justin McGuirk, which explore the changes in the domestic realm in relation to space, technology, society, economy and psychology.

Book SynopsisSurrealism was one of the most influential cultural movements of the twentieth century. Subverting the dogmas of modernism and rationalism in art and literature, it also had a profound impact on the world of design. From Dalí’s Mae West Lips sofa to Schiaparelli’s ‘shocking pink’ haute couture, Surrealism championed the power of the unconscious, of dreams and hidden desires – and liberated design from convention and functionalism. Published to accompany the exhibition Objects of Desire: Surrealism and Design 1924 – Today, this book celebrates Surrealism’s enduring legacy. It features groundbreaking fashion by Mary Katrantzou and Dior, as well as British artists and designers, including Tim Walker, Jonathan Trayte and Vince Fraser. Alongside essays by leading experts, such as Ghislaine Wood and Alyce Mahon, are interviews with practitioners who are carrying the torch of Surrealism today, including Viviane Sassen, Dunne & Raby and the Campana Brothers. The book concludes with a glimpse into some of the recent forms of art and resistance the movement has inspired, such as Afro-Surrealism, as well as the surprising connections between Surrealist thinking and one of the most contentious technological developments of our time: artificial intelligence. You give me a peculiar pleasure of the mind like nothing else in the world.’ – H. G. Wells to W. Heath Robinson (1914) This book takes a nostalgic look back to the imaginative and often frivolous world of William Heath Robinson, one of the few artists to have given his name to the English language. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the expression Heath Robinson is used to describe ‘any absurdly ingenious and impracticable device of the kind illustrated by this artist’. Yet his elaborate drawings of contraptions are not the only thing to make this book very Heath Robinson. Full of quirky images from Romans wearing polka dots to balding men seducing mermaids, Very Heath Robinson presents an unconventional history of the world in which technology and its social setting get equal billing.

  • Logomotive: Railroad Graphics and the American

Sheldrake Press Logomotive: Railroad Graphics and the American

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn Logomotive Ian Logan's photographs are assembled into chapters and picture essays recalling the great days of lines such as the Santa Fe, the Union Pacific, and the Kansas City Southern. Some of his journeys are presented as travelogues in which he meets the Fat Controller, gets to sound the horn, and wanders into freight yards to see the last generation of streamline locomotives rusting amid the weeds. Animal motifs, Native American allusions, advertising slogans, names of famous trains such as the Super Chief and the Wabash Cannonball provide the subject matter for other picture features.Trade ReviewIn these times, the commercial design agenda is generally set by things like automobiles, sneakers, and financial institutions. We see their logos, typographic trends, and color schemes everywhere—on billboards, atop stadiums, beaming at us from our flatscreens and smartphones. Decades ago, though, the public design space was largely the province of railroads, as shown in Logomotive: Railroad Graphics and the American Dream, a beautifully produced compendium of railroad design from Sheldrake Press, a London-based publisher. The authors are Ian Logan, a noted practitioner on the British and European design scene; and Jonathan Glancey, a veteran writer and correspondent who covers design and architecture. Award-winning British architect Norman Foster offers an eloquent and insightful Foreword. The authors bring a fresh and utterly British sense of surprise to a subject that, for readers of this magazine, is likely quite familiar. I got a kick out of Logan’s story about his first trip to the United States, in 1968, and his encounter with a famous name on the side of a boxcar. “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing: the train was emblazoned with the name Rock Island. My uncle was the singer and songwriter Ewan MacColl, and I was brought up listening to folk, skiffle, and blues, so of course I knew Ronnie Donegan’s recording of the ‘Rock Island Line,’ but I hadn’t worked out that the Rock Island was a real, operational railroad.” The rest of the book chronicles similar revelations. Much of Logomotive is dedicated to exploring and showcasing the company logos and heralds that have enlivened the railroad scene since the late nineteenth century. You will see multiple iterations of all the classics—the Pennsylvania keystone, Santa Fe’s Warbonnet, MoPac’s buzzsaw, Seaboard’s red heart, B&O’s capitol silhouette—plus several obscure ones, accompanied by the authors’ sharp typographical and design analysis. One of the strengths of the book are the myriad visual contexts of the logos: on timetables and travel posters, along the flanks of diesels and freight cars and early streamliners, embedded into the walls and lintels of great stations, imprinted on matchbooks and ashtrays. It’s refreshing that not everything is presented in a pristine state. There is a poignancy to a weathered Western Pacific Feather River herald, riveted to the side of a tugboat funnel; or to an SP “Sunset” logo, struggling to be seen through the rust of an old freight car. As familiar as the subject might be, you can learn a lot from this book. I was fascinated by its take on designer Herbert Matter’s creation of the famous McGinnis-era New Haven logo, as well as Allan Fleming’s evolution of Canadian National’s superbly modernistic “CN,” first envisioned on a paper napkin. You’ll see the way New York Central’s oval transitioned from its early elegant serif font to the sans-serif sterility of the cigar band, or how Great Northern’s Rocky the mountain goat was updated. There were surprises, too, at least for me. I had never realized that the Cotton Belt logo of the 1880s derived from a cross-section of a cotton gin, and I was surprised to learn that design superstar Milton Glaser was responsible for Genesee & Wyoming’s versatile black-orange-yellow brand. The publisher has served its subject well, with a first-class horizontal treatment that includes sharp color printing, heavy paper, and a durable imprinted cover. Although the rather brief narrative is aimed at a general audience—some of the Brits’ observations are amusing, and a glossary at the end is as basic as can be—the book serves as an authoritative overview of the high tide of railroad design, written by professionals who really know their business. -- Kevin P. Book SynopsisTo celebrate the centenary of one of the most exciting expeditions of the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration comes "Nimrod Illustrated". The book is a remarkable collage of expedition photographs, paintings and ephemera in a deliberate reminiscence of the expedition scrapbooks kept by so many of the expedition participants at the time. Many of the images are rarely seen, if ever before published, whilst others are better known.Together with quotations from the diaries of expedition participants, they tell the story of the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-1909 which saw the first use of ponies and motor cars in the Antarctic; achieved the first ascent of Mount Erebus; achieved the first attainment of the South Magnetic Pole; and, took Shackleton within 100 miles of the South Geographic Pole to attain a dramatic new 'Farthest South' record. This was the expedition that made Shackleton's name as an explorer and for which he was awarded his knighthood. Edited by Dr. D. M. Wilson, "Nimrod Illustrated" is a treat for anyone interested in Shackleton, the Antarctic, polar exploration or the atmosphere of the Edwardian age. It is a part of the well regarded series commenced with "Discovery Illustrated: Pictures from Captain Scott's First Antarctic Expedition" (2001).Trade ReviewNimrod Illustrated will never be bettered. A magnificent work of gathering and arrangement, devotedly and thoroughly researched, it reproduces and explains a great number of original images, many of them hard to find, of Shackleton's less familiar but quite extraordinary expedition. Book SynopsisThe definitive record of the surfing iconoclast who became an icon The surfing iconoclast who became an icon, Miki Dora was the epitome of 1960s beach culture. His dark good looks were the envy of Malibu. His talent earned him trophies (which he disdained) and the nickname “Da Cat.” And in the end, when he didn't like the commercial direction of the sport he helped define, he turned his back on the beach, wandered the world, served time in jail, and, finally in 2002, suffering from pancreatic cancer returned to his father's house in Montecito, California to die at age 67. A Malibu graffiti that appeared during his years on the road sums up his role in the surfing imagination and still holds true: “Dora Lives.” Years in the making and compiled with the cooperation of Dora while he was alive and his family after his death, Dora Lives is the definitive record of the legend. Transcribed interviews with Dora and texts by former Surfer magazine editor Drew Kampion and writer C.R. Stecyk are combined with nearly 100 photos and stills from photographers, filmmakers, and Dora's personal albums. The story starts out in Budapest, Hungary, where Miklos Dora was born in 1934, follows the child émigré to Hollywood High (except when the surf was up), and finds him at the center of the post-Gidget surf boom of the 60s. At that time, Dora stunt-doubled in a few films and competed when he felt like it, but mostly he embraced the hedonist milieu and burnished his antihero legend, culminating in a mid-wave mooning of the judges at the 1967 Malibu Invitational. Shortly after, he left for points (and point breaks) abroad in France, Indonesia, Australia and Madagascar until 2001, when he returned to the West Coast to die.

The distinctively blurred, feathered or jagged patterns of ikat-dyed textiles are found across much of the world - from Japan in the east to Central and South America in the west, with vast areas of South-east Asia, India, Central Asia and the Middle East in between. The traditional patterns still hold cultural relevance today in significant parts of the long-established ikat-weaving areas. Textile artists and fashion designers in many and varied countries have taken ikat in new directions, respecting traditional forms and palettes while creatively diverging from them. Book SynopsisThis delightful manuscript, published in facsimile, was composed around 1585 by a clergyman in a bid for the patronage of an Elizabethan magnate, Sir John Petre. Modeled on printed writing books, German and French, it presents a profusion of scripts, accompanying decorated capital letters from A to Z. Its texts are eloquent on the value of learning. All is transcribed in print and, when needed, translated, including poems in English and Latin in which Amos Lewis, the creator, presses his case, reinforced by colorful Petre heraldry. The commentary unravels the Alphabet Book’s precursors and analyzes its ingredients, including a lively range of ornament. The first writing book published in London, in 1570, was by a Frenchman, Jean de Beau Chesne. Lewis’s manuscript is the first attempt at an original writing book by an Englishman. Book SynopsisIn Western Europe the Golden Age of Islamic metalwork in Iran was (and is) generally considered to be the earlier period, and later metalwork was collected almost by accident and has been correspondingly little studied and poorly published, though in recent decades the imbalance has been somewhat modified. The Hermitage Collection, which numbers 162 pieces is the largest collection in the world of later Iranian Islamic metalwork, from the West of Iran as far as the Punjab. The great majority of these are household utensils, and their manufacture is characteristic of the middling levels of urban societies, though in Khurasan in the late-15th and early 16th centuries brasses or bronzes inlaid with gold and silver were made for its Timurid rulers. The substantial numbers of Iranian copper-alloy astronomical instruments of this period were made by different craftsmen, for a different public, and deserve separate treatment, though not magic bowls, used in folk-medicine and divination, which are noticed in this volume. In his Introduction, Anatolii Ivanov gives a valuable directoryof museums and other institutions of the former Soviet Union with significant collections, which complement the holdings of the Hermitage and together amount to a truly substantial corpus. The latter were acquired from private collections, but the core of the collection, from the museum attached to the school of industrial drawing founded by Baron Stieglitz, came to the Hermitage in the 1920s, when this was broken up. As well as minutely detailed descriptions of each piece and analyses of their decoration, Ivanov presents a detailed critical survey of the limited documentary evidence afforded by the inscriptions many pieces bear, which is of permanent value as a basis for further scholars working on later Islamic metalwork in general.
