Trained in virtual environments, army personnel are increasingly enhanced by augmented reality technologies that bring combat into conformity with its simulation. Equally, the seductions of media and entertainment have become crucial weapons for “information dominance.” At the same time as the infosphere demands that war takes on the properties of a game, hyper-realistic

Book SynopsisWith an overview of women sculptors from Harriet Hosmer to Sarah Lucas we explore the work of 50 great women artists who have forged a name for themselves in a male arena, broken rules, pushed boundaries and inspired us with their visionary creations. Includes: Maggi Hambling, Sophie Ryder, Helaine Blumenfeld, Rachel Ara and many more.Trade Review"There is need for books to celebrate new thought, new ideas, new people and this is what it achieves."--Guy Portelli, Sculptor "Email "; "50 Women Sculptors is a beautifully illustrated book which presents the world of undervalued and under recognised women sculptors from the past as well as a selection from the present, with in depth interviews on their life, inspirations, working methods and use of all materials mentioned above - an improvement compared with the past but there is still room for full equality to be achieved. Book SynopsisThe contribution of women to the first century of photography has been overlooked across the world, including in New Zealand. Through superb images and fascinating individual stories, this important book tilts the balance, unearthing a large and hitherto unknown number of women photographers who operated in New Zealand from the 1860s to 1960.Trade ReviewLandfall, reviewed by Mary Macpherson. “A lavishly-illustrated blockbuster of a book that reveals a whole world of women active at every level of photography … At a deeper level, these images … give us part of the history of our country across the centuries. It’s difficult not to be moved by this, and the book deserves to fly high at the next Ockham New Zealand Book Awards.”; Aotearoa New Zealand Review of Books, reviewed by Hamish Coney. “Mitchell’s decade of research has unearthed a wealth of wonderful images created by women in Aotearoa, and provided a powerful narrative that reveals their creators’ lives and motivations. Through Shaded Glass is both a corrective and a celebration, and will no doubt create a legacy in its own right, as a point of departure for future scholarship.”; NZ Booklovers, reviewed by Lyn Potter. “Lissa Mitchell has skilfully and successfully filled a gap in the history of women’s participation in photography in the Western world. She has amply succeeded in her aim of showing that in New Zealand, women from 1860-1960 did have access to photographic equipment and used it in all sorts of ways. … She is a very erudite photography historian but has written Through Shaded Glass in a very engaging and accessible way for the general reader. I found it unputdownable.”; The Post, reviewed by Mark Amery. “Through Shaded Glass impresses in providing a different window on our past than the other photographic history books on my shelves.”; Kete Books, reviewed by Jessica Agoston Cleary. “As one of Aotearoa’s most knowledgeable and experienced photographic historians, there is no one better than Lissa Mitchell to research, distill and re-contextualise the photographic history of our country … It is a whirlwind tour and it is well worth it.”; New Zealand Geographic, reviewed by Catherine Woulfe. “Mitchell’s text validates the various ways women participated in photography … her own mastery is clear on each page.”; Gisborne Herald, review by Wynsley Wrigley of the chapter on Gisborne photographers. “Gloriously illustrated publication … fascinating book.”

In Pictures of You, bestselling British-Canadian historian and travel writer Rory MacLean narrates a journey through 10 photographs, across the globe and into the lives of 10 ordinary men and women who lived through extraordinary times. Each photograph (or group of photographs) comes from a different decade of the 20th century: the first killing of the Cold War; the dying hopes of a doomed aviator; the ghosts of Native America at Alcatraz; Chairman Mao's most timid lover; Nature's final battle with humankind. Through these images, MacLean ventures from Siberia to Rangoon, China to Shepperton Studios, hearing forgotten voices that echo from the depths of time, picturing lives that mirror our own, and saving the

Book SynopsisWe all know Cuckoos as the harbingers of spring whose haunting calls proclaim the birds own name across fields and reedbeds. A bird much more often heard than actually seen, and often mistaken for a hawk or falcon when briefly glimpsed in flight. Cuckoos are also well known, perhaps even infamous, for their habit of laying their own eggs into the nests of much smaller species, such as reed warblers, who are then doomed to raise the enormous cuckoo chick rather than their own young, and whose eggs are ruthlessly thrown from the nest by the cuckoo hatchling. But how does this complex behaviour act out in nature, and how did it evolve? What are the cuckoo's special tricks and what counter-measures have the host birds developed to resist the depredations of cuckoos? In this book the authors delve into the stories behind what we see, and into the complex and ever evolving evolutionary arms race by which the nest parasite and its hosts constantly try to leapfrog each other into

For the approaching visitor there is no hint of a family whose ties thread for centuries back through the histories of Scotland and England, little to encourage hope that rich and varied art collections might lie within, or even that these solid stones might have resonated with festivities and celebrations, the setting for warm sentiments and deeper emotions. Bowhill is a most deceptive house. This book falls into two parts, a history of the family, the Scotts of Buccleuch, and the building of Bowhill, and tour of its spectacular rooms.

The book explores the cultural landscape and geography of the vast Turkic-speaking lands, from the mercantile cities of Uzbekistan to little-explored pockets of the Baltic. It is clear that while divided by distance, the diverse Turkic share far more than a linguistic heritage. Deep cultural connections highlight great mobility across many landscapes and centuries. Book SynopsisA luminary in more ways than one, celebrated dancer Loïe Fuller studied radium and its potential uses in performanceThe luminous and radical dance performances of Loïe Fuller (18621928) at the turn of the 20th century were unlike anything that had ever been staged before. In her Serpentine Dance, she wore a large, diaphanous gown she manipulated with her arms to form undulating waves, while colored lights projected onto the fabric gave the illusion of birds, animals or flowers. While her profound influence on writers and artists such as Mallarmé and Rodin is well documented, less well known is Fuller's passion for technology and her involvement with the leading scientists of the time.Lecture on Radium spotlights Fuller's scientific forays in her own words alongside an array of archival documents and photographs of the dancer in action. The centerpiece of the book is her 1907 lecture on the invention of radium, her notes on meeting Marie and Pierre Curie and Thomas Alva Edison, and her literally explosive efforts to create a glow-in-the-dark dance performance. Featuring an introduction by renowned cinema scholar Tom Gunning, this book presents Fuller's eccentric passions and pioneering pursuits in a fresh light.

Book SynopsisWilfred's pioneering and strangely prescient musical instrument predates television, video art and psychedeliaInventor, designer, artist and musician Thomas Wilfred (18891968) devoted his life to the creation of a new art formLumia, or the art of light. He invented his own version of a color organ (a term he disliked) and dubbed it the Clavilux, from the Latin meaning light played by key. After a successful international tour in the 1920s, Wilfred reinvented these large-scale performances as self-enclosed light shows for domestic entertainment. While they enjoyed a short commercial life, Wilfred's aesthetically elegant and interactive Clavilux and Lumia home models soon found their way into storied collections. His work was included in the Museum of Modern Art's 1952 exhibition 15 Americans, where it was seen by many artists who would work with light as their medium in the 1960s and '70s.Clavilux and Lumia Home Models presents a stimulating collection of archival material culled from the Wilfred archive at Yale University and other sources, including Wilfred's never-before-published sketches.

Book SynopsisCult sci-fi author and controversial theorist Richard Sharpe Shaver devoted his life to decoding messages from ancient civilizations left behind in rocksScience fiction writer Richard Sharpe Shaver believed that rocks were books imprinted with valuable information about such mythical ancient races as the Lemurians and Atlanteans. His controversial stories about an advanced prehistoric civilization and a race of evil beings living at the center of the earth appeared in Amazing Stories and other landmark sci-fi publications of the '40s and '50s.A decade later, he was living in relative isolation and devoting himself to rock book research, a course of study that he shared with a devoted group of correspondents. Shaver believed that ancient leaders had left behind images embedded into rocks, which he then tried to interpret. Some Stones Are Ancient Books contains a generous selection of Rokfogos accompanied by hand-typed texts in which Shaver explainsnot always patientlyall that can be seen in these stones. Also included are facsimiles of his handmade books and publications, all of which he felt to be of incalculable importance to civilization.Richard Sharpe Shaver (190775) was an artist and author whose work frequently appeared in 1940s science fiction magazines such as Amazing Stories. He was the center of the Shaver Mystery, a controversy regarding his alleged discovery of a prehistoric civilization, which sparked mass interest and a devoted following that continues to this day.

She lays bare her existential journey as a mixed-format essay and journal written on the road, made even more personal through her contemplative photos, quietly coursing with an underlying conflict. Flitting between cities and blinking back and forth through time, Elsewhere pulsates with a nebulous sense of home and the deep wish to belong. In this innovative personal essay of words and photos, raw and insightful of a time and a generation, Matthews traces the widening recognition that the one thing a wanderer takes with her everywhere is herself.

Book SynopsisThe first English-language monograph on the installation artist exploring transnationalism and wandering as a permanent positionArtist Yukinori Yanagi (born 1959) focuses on large-scale and site-specific installations that interrogate the politics of institutional borders and boundaries often drawing from systems of signs and symbolic imagery. Investigating the notion of wandering as a permanent position, Yanagi uses flags as symbols of nationalism and stability of place as a point of departure. Major works pursue the dissolution of symbolic signs of stasis into organic forms that change with time and circumstance.Edited by postwar specialist Mika Yoshitake, this publication is the first comprehensive English-language monograph on Yanagi. Presenting eight series of works from throughout the artist's 35-year career, this project shares newly translated Japanese texts and artist interviews alongside large-scale reproductions and original contributions by scholars Jane Farver, Reiko Tomii, Bert Winther-Tamaki and Yoshitake. This retrospective of Yanagi's work provides a platform for English readers to engage with his politically and socially engaged practice for the first time.

Book SynopsisThe book "Devandalized" pays homage to decades of street art mostly in and around New York City. The author/artist use of assemblage as an artistic form and medium has combined the famous with the infamous to create an art form larger than the sum of its parts. Street art is far and away the world’s most globally accessible genre of contemporary art. New York has produced influential graffiti and street artists over the decades. Graffiti and street art can be controversial. But it can also be a medium for voices of social change, protest, or expressions of community desire. Sticking stickers to our hands and books, some of the artists have taken this concept to the streets. They make eye-catching stickers of different sizes and post them out on the streets to the trees, lampposts, walls and benches. While some stickers can be removed easily, others are meant to stay for a long time. Street art is embedded in the Trade Review “Devandalized: 1987-2017 is a significant book about a compelling artist’s process and practice.” – Stephen Wozniak Writer for Whitehot Magazine “Devandalized” is a series of paintings and collages that preserve and reflect the ongoing street dialogue that appears along streetlamps, newspaper bins, metal gates, door coverings and brick walls throughout cities around the world including New York.” – Jill Connor Art Critic and Curator
