Book SynopsisWestern admirers have long seen the Islamic garden as an earthly reflection of the paradise said to await the faithful. However, such simplification, Ruggles contends, denies the sophistication and diversity of the art form. Islamic Gardens and Landscapes immerses the reader in the world of the architects of the great gardens of the Islamic world, from medieval Morocco to contemporary India.Just as Islamic culture is historically dense, sophisticated, and complex, so too is the history of its built landscapes. Islamic gardens began from the practical need to organize the surrounding space of human civilization, tame nature, enhance the earth''s yield, and create a legible map on which to distribute natural resources. Book SynopsisFor Italian city builders over the course of a thousand years, the urban realm was the great theater where their best aspirations were played out, the place where society said the most substantial things about who they were and what they longed for. In Timeless Cities , architect David Mayernik reveals how Venice, Rome, Florence, Siena, and Pienza emerged from the cultural ideas of humanism that characterized Italian society from late antiquity to the eighteenth century. Cities were literally designed to be models of the mind and images of heaven. Mayernik takes the reader on an architect''s tour of these five cities and describes the cultural beliefs and ideas behind the buildings. Not only a journey into the past, Timeless Cities also explains why these city-building ideas are relevant today. Whether travelling on holiday or appreciating the art and architecture of Italy from home, Mayernik helps bring the wonder and beauty of the Italian mind and its great cities a little closer.Trade Review"A thoughtful, passionate, learned and unexpected examination of cities past, present and ideal, written with conviction and humour." Book SynopsisThe understanding and enjoyment of a work of art depends as much on the story it depicts as on the artist''s execution of it. But what were once biblical or classical commonplaces are not so readily recognizable today. This book relates in a succinct and readable way the themes, sacred and secular, on which the repertoire of Western art is based. Combined here in a single volume are religious, classical, and historical themes, figures of moral allegory, and characters from romantic poetry that appeared throughout paintings and sculpture in Western art before and after the Renaissance. More than just a dictionary, this text places these subjects in their narrative, historical, or mythological context and uses extensive cross-referencing to enhance and clarify the meanings of these themes for the reader. The definitive work by which others are compared, this volume has become an indispensable handbook for students and general appreciators alike. This wholly redesigned second ediTrade Review"It is clearly written, well arranged, and can be read for its own sake as a compendium of the image-making faculty of Western man. I would recommend it strongly to anyone who wishes to increase his interest and pleasure in visiting a picture gallery or turning over the illustrations of a book of art." -Kenneth Clark "Of the several comparable dictionaries on the iconography of Western art ... this one is by far the most satisfactory. ...This much richer fund of material as well as the tightly packed and well-written entries convey much information. In all, an impressively erudite yet thoroughly useable dictionary for which students and faculty alike should be grateful." -Choice "The volume is comprehensive to interested laymen, and should be quite useful for students and scholars. Entries pertain to persons, titles and pictures, and objects as attributes and symbols. Recurrent mythological, historical and religious themes are explored and allegorical, poetic, and saintly characters are also covered. Cross references and appropriate line drawings enhance the book's value. And because the entries are succinct and really absorbing, it's fun simply to browse through this dictionary. Out of stock

Book SynopsisMatisse and Picasso achieved extraordinary prominence during their lifetimes. They have become cultural icons, standing not only for different kinds of art but also for different ways of living. Matisse, known for his restraint and intense sense of privacy, for his decorum and discretion, created an art that transcended daily life and conveyed a sensuality that inhabited an abstract and ethereal realm of being. In contrast, Picasso became the exemplar of intense emotionality, of theatricality, of art as a kind of autobiographical confession that was often charged with violence and explosive eroticism. In Matisse and Picasso , Jack Flam explores the compelling, competitive, parallel lives of these two artists and their very different attitudes toward the idea of artistic greatness, toward the women they loved, and ultimately toward their confrontations with death.

Book SynopsisThis book explores the achievements of a group of young women artists who learned about the New Art through an extraordinary faculty of innovators at Douglass College. New Art rejected the dominance of Abstract Expressionism, advocating that art should be based on everyday life and that “anything can be art.”Trade Review"Joan Marter’s Women Artists on the Leading Edge: Visual Arts at Douglass College is a significant account from an actual participant of the pioneering art program for women students developed at Rutgers after WW II. Inspired in part by the inventive curriculum initiated at Black Mountain College, as well as the avant-garde course taught by composer John Cage at the New School from 1956 to 1961, the multi-media agenda advanced at Douglass College (where many faculty were associated with Pop and Fluxus), was further underscored by an impressive roster of activist campus guests. Marter’s handsome book, including a set of outstanding interviews with notable Douglass alumnae such as Alice Aycock and Mimi Smith, appropriately redresses this historical imbalance, both detailing and celebrating the decisive role Douglass played as an incubator for artistic innovation by women." -- Ellen G. Landau * author of Lee Krasner: A Catalogue Raisonné, Reading Abstract Expressionism: Context and Critique, *"Even before second-wave feminism became a recognized social and political movement in the early 1960s, professors at New Jersey's Douglass College for women recognized the need for art students to become acquainted with some of the most cutting-edge ideas of the time. At long last, the extraordinary history of how this college fostered the growth of such celebrated artists as Alice Aycock, Jackie Winsor, and Joan Snyder is being thoroughly recounted by esteemed art historian Joan Marter, who analyzes Douglass's important contributions to the arts at Rutgers University, where she taught from 1977 to 2016." -- Robert Hobbs * author of Alice Aycock, Sculpture and Projects *"In Women Artists on the Leading Edge, Joan Marter tells the fascinating account of how Douglass College's visual artists' receptivity to the explosive spirit of experimentation in the 1950s and 1960s had a profound impact both on students and contemporary art. Inviting renowned artistic pioneers to teach, visit, or perform galvanized students' artistic ambitions. Dr. Marter's narrative about Douglass College, to which she made many contributions, is engrossing as cultural history. This book's recollections of creative growth by former students forms an institutional history of the confluence of interdisciplinary arts, feminist values, and innovative pedagogy in stimulating achievements by women" -- Suzaan Boettger * author of Earthworks, Art and the Landscape of the Sixties *Table of ContentsIntroduction Part 1 Visual Arts Faculty at Douglas College Interview with Geoffrey Hendricks Interview with Roy Lichtenstein Part 2 Alice Aycock Loretta Dunkelman Kirsten Kraa Frances Tannenbaum Kuehn Linda Lindroth Marion Munk Rita Myers Mimi Smith Joan Snyder Ann Tsubota Jackie Winsor Interview with Alice Aycock Interview with Letty Lou Eisenhauer Interview with Mimi Smith Part 3 The Women Artists Series at Douglass College Mary H. Book SynopsisScott Dill''s A Theology of Sense: John Updike, Embodiment, and Late Twentieth-Century American Literature brings together theology, aesthetics, and the body, arguing that Updike, a central figure in post-1945 American literature, deeply embeds in his work questions of the body and the senses with questions of theology. Dill offers new understandings not only of the work of Updike-which is importantly being revisited since the author''s death in 2009-but also new understandings of the relationship between aesthetics, religion, and physical experience.Dill explores Updike''s unique literary legacy in order to argue for a genuinely postsecular theory of aesthetic experience. Each chapter takes up one of the five senses and its relation to broader theoretical concerns: affect, subjectivity, ontology, ethics, and theology. While placing Updike''s work in relation to other late twentieth-century American writers, Dill explains their notions

The authors help prepare students by not only exploring how music theory works in art music, but how it functions within modern music, and why this knowledge will help them become better composers, music teachers, performers, and recording engineers. This broadly comprehensive text merges traditional topics such as part writing and harmony (diatonic, chromatic, neo-tonal and atonal), with less traditional topics such as counterpoint and musical process, and includes the non-traditional topics of popular music songwriting, jazz harmony and the blues. 2 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewLeaving no stone—or brick—unturned she weaves together every tantalizing aspect of the creation of Stanford White’s magnificent Madison Square Garden. I found this in-depth work by Suzanne Hinman quite remarkable. Hinman’s skillful narrative hand, sense of structure, and the incredible amount of historical detail she weaves into every chapter make a wonderful book for anyone who enjoys a great read. What a splendid book! This scholarly history of the second Madison Square Garden (1890-1925) provides an important addition to the story of New York City Gilded Age architecture, entertainment, and popular culture. This building, it must be noted, lasted only a few years. In a rapidly changing city, this Palace of Pleasure was torn down to make way for a great Cathedral of Insurance. Thus, this book is especially rich in expanding our knowledge of the work of the architect Stanford White and the sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The author has read widely and presents her findings in highly readable prose. This is a book for scholars and lay readers alike. A detailed and wide-ranging account of the Gilded Age from its picaresque characters, social choreography, and cultural preferences to its volatile economy, favorite restaurants, and even construction technology, with Stanford White and his beloved Madison Square Garden at the center of it all. Hinman observes the complex lives of her subjects with assurance in this accessible study that will appeal to readers interested in late 19th-century American architecture and sculpture, New York City, and LGBTQ history. Hinman uses the construction of the second Madison Square Garden as an armature upon which to hang a depiction of the Gilded Age. The Grandest Madison Square Garden will appeal to a wide audience. It tells an inherently fascinating story and does so with evident enthusiasm. Ought to be in collections devoted to New York City, the Gilded Age, architecture, art, and entertainment history. . . . Highly Recommended.

Book SynopsisThe Rent of Form: Architecture and Labor in the Digital Age was first published in a different form in the original Portuguese as Arquitetura na era digital-financeira: desenho, canteiro e renda da forma (Saao Paolo, Brazil: Editora 34 Ltdsa., 2012).Trade Review"In this story, all is extraction, and the construction site is like a mine for the primary accumulation of symbolic capital. Form becomes function not in any useful way, but as a locus of value, forcing signifier and signified together through the raw power of the command: measure this and make this, in this way."—Reinhold Martin, from the Foreword"This timely translation of Pedro Fiori Arantes’s book into English explores the political and aesthetic dilemmas of contemporary architecture practice and theory from an opportune viewpoint. Book SynopsisA visually rich survey of two hundred years of Alabama fine arts and artists. The works of art included in this volume have all emerged from a distinctive milieu that has nourished the creation of powerful visual expressions, statements that are both universal and indigenous.Trade ReviewAlabama artists have helped contextualize the state as a place that is embracing its past while visualizing its future. Artists such as the internationally hailed quiltmakers of Gee's Bend, public artist Rick Lowe, painters Jack Whitten and Thornton Dial, and photographer Carolyn Sherer have portrayed a richer understanding of Alabama that is appreciated not only by those of us who live here but also by the nation in general. Alabama would not have the exposure or the expanded worldview that are so apparent without the work of the visual artists who have helped us reveal the complexity, diversity, and multifaceted nature of our populations and our state. Alabama artists help us define who we are and what home is."" - From the introduction by Gail C. AndrewsTable of Contents Acknowledgments Preface by Al Head Introduction by Gail C. Andrews Part I. Book SynopsisA MASTER CLASS WITH AMERICA’S MOST CELEBRATED PHOTOGRAPHER 'How did you make this photograph?' This is a question that Ansel Adams was asked repeatedly throughout his lifetime. In Examples: The Making of 40 Photographs, Adams shares the circumstances surrounding the creation of many of his most celebrated images. Each classic photograph is superbly reproduced and accompanied by an entertaining and informative narrative that combines his own reminiscences of people and places with precise recall of technical details and aesthetic considerations. Readers will be fascinated by the personal side of the text, which includes a great deal of history and anecdote, including appearances by Alfred Stieglitz, Georgia O'Keeffe, Edward Weston, and other notable figures such as Edwin Land of Polaroid. Pondering these essays conjures the sense of standing by Adams’ side during some of the most pivotal and profound creative moments of his life in photography—a master class with the legendary artist. The specific technical information on camera and lens, filters, exposure times, developing, and printing provided in each example illustrates his approach and methods, and will help amateurs and professionals alike to advance their photography. Through this case study approach, Adams’ philosophy of craft and creativity unfolds; his credos of visualization, image management, and the Zone System are demonstrated; and the colorful story of a lifetime devoted to photography is revealed.Trade ReviewAdams explains the why and how some of his most famous photographs. • Textile Orientalisms

    Ohio University Press Textile Orientalisms

Book SynopsisThe first major study of Cashmere and Paisley shawls in nineteenth-century British literature, this book shows how they came to represent both high fashion and the British Empire.During the late eighteenth century, Cashmere shawls from the Indian subcontinent began arriving in Britain. At first, these luxury goods were tokens of wealth and prestige. Subsequently, affordable copies known as Paisley shawls were mass-produced in British factories, most notably in the Scottish town of the same name. Textile Orientalisms is the first full-length study of these shawls in British literature of the extended nineteenth century. Attentive to the juxtaposition of objects and their descriptions, the book analyzes the British obsession with Indian shawls through a convergence of postcolonial, literary, and cultural theories. Surveying a wide range of materialsplays, poems, satires, novels, advertisements, and archival sourcesSuchitra Choudhury argues that while Cashmere and PaTrade ReviewFrom diplomatic gift to fashion trend, literary trope to colonialism’s violent accessory, the cashmere shawl is the star of Textile Orientalisms. Expertly weaving historical and literary sources, Suchitra Choudhury spins a vibrant tale of this culturally rich textile, intertwining the object and its many soft powers with British Empire scholarship. -- Susan Hiner, author of Accessories to Modernity: Fashion and the Feminine in Nineteenth-Century FranceSuchitra Choudhury weaves together entangled histories and discovers that the humble shawl is in fact a powerful symbol of empire, trade, industry, class, gender, design, and fashion, as well as being a symbol of identity, authenticity, family, and belonging. -- Leonie Bell, director, Victoria and Albert Museum DundeeA magisterial exploration…. Suchitra Choudhury has dug deeply in the archives of British India to reveal the shawl’s multiple meanings as a desired fashion accessory and orientalist icon. Linking the fashion system to imperial governance, gender and class insurrection, her book demonstrates that despite its privileged place at the heart of British domesticity, the ‘old Cashmere shawl’ possessed an uncanny power to disturb and disrupt. An important, original, and long-awaited contribution to the literary study of British India. -- Nigel Leask, author of Stepping Westward: Writing the Highland Tour, c.1720-1830The definitive work on the subject of Cashmere and Paisley shawls in all of their intricate significances within eighteenth- and nineteenth-century English history and fiction. -- Deborah Denenholz Morse, Sara E. Nance Professor of English, College of William & MaryAn original and arresting piece of scholarship…. With its broad range, it should find a wide readership among those interested in fashion and the novel, literary critics, and cultural and imperial historians alike. -- Kate Teltscher, author of India Inscribed: European and British Writing on India, 1600–1800An impressive and extensive study on the cashmere shawl in British literature, anatomizing it as both a valuable commodity and a rich metaphor in literature. Suchitra Choudhury’s work is unique in denoting the shawl’s significance in both feminine and masculine experiences, and the manifold interpretations it engendered, creating ‘a “grammar” of consumption’ across gender and imperial discourses….It would be very useful for students of fashion, Victorian, and material culture studies, as well as suitable for the general reading public. * Fashion Theory *This beautifully illustrated and engagingly written monograph surveys a wide range of materials including poems, plays, novels, and artistic and illustrative material.... [W]hat this book does exceptionally well is highlight and hold in balance the many competing discourses that surrounded Cashmere and imitation shawls in Britain during this period. Drawing upon the literary shawl as both a locus, representative, and even occasionally a tool of empire, Choudhury’s engaging monograph sets up and excitingly explores "the interface between Britain and India during the colonial period." * British Association for Victorian Studies Newsletter *

Book SynopsisThis is the first full critical study of the work of the popular documentary photographer SebastiãoSalgado. Nair explores all the stages of Salgado's work, including the recent more ecological subjects, showing its planetary commitments.Trade Review“Through exhaustive research on Salgado's work, Nair raises critical questions on ethics, politics, history, photography, and aesthetics. . . . Particularly poignant are the intimate conversations among Nair, Salgado, and his wife, Lélia, which add tremendous clarity to Salgado's worldview. Highly recommended for fans of Salgado's work and for those interested in photojournalism, documentary photography, and global humanitarian issues.” - Shauna Frischkorn, Library Journal“[A]dvance[s] a perceptive, penetrating understanding of social and natural discord encoded in the photographs.” - Giovanna L. Costantini, Leonardo Reviews“[T]his treatise is useful for its focus on Salgado and its contribution to the search for answers about the ongoing presence of what often seems an unsolvable but significant concern. Nair's book highlights another central core within Salgado's ongoing visual investigation: the varying relationship(s) between humans and the land. . . . Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above; general readers.” - C. Chiarenza, Choice“This work constitutes, to my knowledge, the first book-length study of the Brazilian documentarist’s work, and as such it represents a significant contribution to Latin American scholarship on photography and beyond—to visual cultural studies writ large. The author effortlessly ranges across aesthetic theory, Latin American historiography, and postcolonial criticism, as well as theories of photography, in addressing her subject.” - Jorge Coronado, The Americas“One need not be familiar with photographer Sebastião Salgado in order to uncover something innovative about visual studies within Parvati Nair’s biography. . . . . Nair effectively compares and contrasts Salgado to other influential photographers across time and place . . . while at the same time confronting both his detractors and fans through a theoretical lens.” - Bree Akesson, Visual Studies“The importance of Salgado as a photographer is indisputable, he is the curator of chiaroscuro, and it is remarkable that Parvati Nair’s A Different Light is the first full-length study of him to appear in print. Her book offers an interdisciplinary overview of his work.” - Sean Sheehan, Dublin Review of Books“A superb book on the most important photographer in the world today, A Different Light cuts a very wide swath: critical photojournalism, humanitarian documentation, political aesthetics, visual epistemology and historiography, representational theory, documentary ethics, the colonial gaze, the Frankfurt School, Latin America, Africa, the place of still photography in a rapidly moving world, ecology, art, profit, and concern. This is the book that the photography of Sebastião Salgado deserves.”—John Mraz, author of Looking for Mexico: Modern Visual Culture and National Identity“An excellent study! Parvati Nair simultaneously places the work of Sebastião Salgado within broader contexts and illuminates contemporary debates on aesthetics, ethics, and photodocumentary, with welcome emphasis on perspectives from the Global South. A must-read for all those concerned with photographs as visible evidence.”—Liz Wells, Plymouth University, United Kingdom“[A]dvance[s] a perceptive, penetrating understanding of social and natural discord encoded in the photographs.” -- Giovanna L.
