Island Press Missing Middle Housing: Thinking Big and Building
Book SynopsisToday, there is a tremendous mismatch between the available housing stock in the US and the housing options that people want and need. The post-WWII, auto-centric, single-family-development model no longer meets the needs of residents. Urban areas in the US are experiencing dramatically shifting household and cultural demographics and a growing demand for walkable urban living. Missing Middle Housing, a term coined by Daniel Parolek, describes the walkable, desirable, yet attainable housing that many people across the country are struggling to find. Missing Middle Housing types, such as duplexes, fourplexes, and bungalow courts, can provide options along a spectrum of affordability. In Missing Middle Housing, Parolek, an architect and urban designer, illustrates the power of these housing types to meet today’s diverse housing needs. With the benefit of beautiful full-colour graphics, Parolek goes into depth about the benefits and qualities of Missing Middle Housing. The book demonstrates why more developers should be building Missing Middle Housing and defines the barriers cities need to remove to enable it to be built. Case studies of built projects show what is possible, from the Prairie Queen Neighborhood in Omaha, Nebraska to the Sonoma Wildfire Cottages, in California. A chapter from urban scholar Arthur C. Nelson uses data analysis to highlight the urgency to deliver Missing Middle Housing. Parolek proves that density is too blunt of an instrument to effectively regulate for twenty-first-century housing needs. Complete industries and systems will have to be rethought to help deliver the broad range of Missing Middle Housing needed to meet the demand, as this book shows. Whether you are a planner, architect, builder, or city leader, Missing Middle Housing will help you think differently about how to address housing needs for today’s communities.

3DTotal Publishing Ltd Komorebi: The Art of Djamila Knopf
Book SynopsisIllustrator Djamila Knopf leads us through her world, where anime-influenced characters, exquisite settings, and the process of creating fantasies enchant her fans worldwide. Having settled on her own authentic, creative style, featuring line art and a palette of delicate, yet impactful, colors, Djamila has decided to write a book that charts her journey. Japanese art was a key influence from an early age, and the book illustrates how Djamila has fused her favorite aspects of anime with her own, the result being a unique style that has captured the attention of both art fans and the industry. Her approach to storytelling and ideation are covered in depth; although artists have different approaches, Djamila shares her own experiences and insights to help readers fine-tune their own early stages of creation. As a fantasy artist, symbolism and fantastical scenes have always been part of Djamila’s world, and here she shares how she works with these, as well as finding very personal connections to even the most general of concepts. The final leg of the journey is visiting Djamila’s own studio, where she discusses being an independent artist, her daily routine and workspace, and the practical aspect of time management and motivation.

Merrell Publishers Ltd The Vanishing Stepwells of India
Book SynopsisSome of the finest architectural structures in India are to be found below ground: these are its ancient stepwells. Stepwells are unique to India; the earliest rudimentary wells date from about the 4th century CE, and eventually they were built throughout the country, particularly in the arid western regions. Stepwell construction evolved so that, by the 11th century, they were amazingly complex feats of architecture and engineering, not only providing water all year round but also serving as gathering places, refuges and retreats. The journalist Victoria Lautman first encountered stepwells three decades ago, and this book – now available in paperback for the first time – is a testament to her determined efforts over several years to document these fascinating but largely unknown structures before they disappear. Of the thousands of stepwells that proliferated across India, most were abandoned as a result of modernization and the depletion of water tables. Frequently commissioned by royal or wealthy patrons, the wells vary greatly in scale and design. Some also functioned as subterranean Hindu temples, featuring columned pavilions and elaborate stone carvings. Islamic wells were generally less flamboyant, but often incorporated shady loggias and small chambers in which to relax and escape the stifling heat. Today, few stepwells are in use. The majority have been left to silt up, fill with rubbish and crumble into disrepair. Gradually, however, the Indian government and heritage organizations are recognizing the need to preserve these architectural wonders. In 2014 India’s grandest and best-known stepwell, the Rani ki Vav in Patan, Gujarat, became a UNESCO World Heritage site. In her introduction, Lautman discusses why and where the stepwells were built. She reflects on the reasons they became derelict and considers how the appreciation of stepwells is changing with the work of organizations and individuals who aim to protect and restore them. The main part of the book is arranged in a broadly chronological order, with up to four pages devoted to each of c. 70 stepwells, every one unique in design and engineering. The name, location (including GPS coordinates) and approximate date of each well accompany colour photographs and a concise commentary by Lautman on the history and architecture of the well and her experience of visiting it. While many of the stepwells are rather decrepit, their magnificent engineering and great beauty never fail to impress.

Book SynopsisReva Wolf is Professor of Art History, State University of New York at New Paltz, USA.Alisa Luxenberg is Professor of Art History, University of Georgia, USA.Trade Review* Choice Outstanding Academic Title of 2020 * Covering an impressive range of arts, essays touch on Meissen porcelain, etchings and engravings by Hogarth and Paul Revere, paintings by Goya and Copley, photographic portraiture of African American masons, and even masonic folk art in contemporary Haitian voodooism. * Choice *The great value of this diverse, wide-ranging and beautifully illustrated collection is that it turns a spotlight onto a central aspect of the masonic experience that previous scholars have too often overlooked. Future work will no longer be able to neglect how Freemasons utilized the visual medium to generate a novel field of social life and group identity. * H-France *Readers of this book will be rewarded with a greater understanding of the history, importance, and pervasiveness of masonry over the centuries, and its important role in the development of our own country. * Journal of American Culture *This book is a wonderful, detailed scholarly work which explores the relationship between Freemasonry and the visual arts and vice versa … The book is beautifully illustrated with numerous colour and black & white images that help reveal the way the visual arts, particularly architecture, were influenced by and in turn influenced Freemasonry. * Leonardo Reviews Archive *The book is copiously illustrated with 16 color plates and roughly 9 black-and-white figures illustrating each of the essays … Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through faculty; general readers. * Choice *Explicating the vast network of interconnections between Freemasonry and the visual arts in multiple societies from the 18th century onward, this book is an invaluable resource of information and analysis. Wolf and Luxenberg have gathered a series of brilliantly insightful essays. * Edward J. Sullivan, Helen Gould Shepard Professor of the History of Art, New York University, USA *This is a much-needed book on an important subject. The links between freemasonry and the visual arts are many, but their scope has not been fully appreciated. Freemasonry and the Visual Arts from the Eighteenth Century Forward demonstrates how freemasonic symbols and ideas permeate a wide range of visual products, from architecture and urban planning to paintings and porcelain, and how freemasonry’s influence can be detected in settings far from the lodges themselves. The book presents a global perspective on its subject, offering essays on Portugal, Iran, and Haiti alongside the better-studied settings of Britain and the United States. It likewise offers models for analyzing fragmentary or hidden historical experiences. Freemasonry and the Visual Arts suggests that art offers opportunities to tap into histories that otherwise would remain lost to us. * Michael Yonan, Professor of Art History, University of Missouri, USA *The enormously rich visual culture generated by Freemasonry has not received the attention it deserves from art historians. This pioneering collection of essays provides fascinating and tantalising illustrations of the rich artistic legacy of Freemasonry in many different countries ranging from Europe and America to Haiti, Iran and India across media including paintings, prints, metalwork, jewellery, ceramics and architecture. * Andrew Prescott, Professor of Digital Humanities, University of Glasgow, Scotland *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments List of illustrations Introduction: The Mystery of Masonry Brought to Light Reva Wolf and Alisa Luxenberg 1. In each case Schwitters delivers his canny diagnosis with rigor, humor, and unflinching belligerence. No figure was able to reconcile Dadaist nihilism with constructivist optimism quite like Schwitters, and his striking insights about the hollow metaphysics of consumer society will not fail to resonate with anyone torn between the positions of critique and complicity today."--Devin Fore, Princeton UniversityTable of ContentsList of Illustrations An Introduction to Merz-Thought A Note to the Reader 1 The Problem of Abstract Art. Hopper & Fuchs Twice
Book SynopsisTwice by Jacques Sonck brings together duo-toned portraits of people in twos and threes that Jacques Sonck photographed on the street over the course of thirty years. Jacques Sonck shoots classical analogue black-and-white portraits with an eye for the extraordinary. His oeuvre is a celebration of the diversity of humankind. Sonck is attracted by people who stand out from the crowd, either by an anomaly in their appearance or by their extrovert attitude and Twice demonstrates diversity and his anthropological taste within photography. His eccentric models are unique individuals who walk the border of normality'. Although his work is often compared with that of Diane Arbus, who photographed humans on the margins of society, Sonck is more interested in the physical appearance than in the social position of his subjects. In English and French.

Book SynopsisAnna Andreeva (19172008) was a Russian textile designer and leading artist at the famous Red Rose Silk Factory in Moscow 194684. Named after the Polish-German socialist revolutionary Rosa Luxemburg, the factory was a site of collective female design labour that shaped the fashion and material culture of late socialism. Andreeva's spectacular patterns range from the abstract and geometric recalling the early Soviet avant-garde to the cosmic and space-age to the cybernetic to the gorgeously-stylised floral to elegantly-schematised narrative pictures of Moscow, electrification, the cinema, Russian folk art and Central Asian motifs. Her designs for mass production were among the most popular textile prints distributed within USSR in the 1960s and 1970s.Collective Threads showcases Anna Andreeva's outstanding art through reproductions of her drawings, sketches, and historic fabric samples as well as documents from the Red Rose factory collective, Soviet fashion magazines, and images of international exhibition designs. The illustrations are supplemented with essays contributed by international scholars, curators, and critics who explore Andreeva's work and career and place it in historic and artistic context.

Many contemporary painters, from Hodgkin and Bacon to Auerbach and Kossof, acknowledge a debt to his influence. His career spanned six decades of unceasing experiment and achievement. He was taken up by both the Woolfs and the Sitwells. He gave painting lessons to Winston Churchill. His energy was prodigious and his personality fascinating: he was also an illustrator, cartoonist, writer, polemicist, teacher and wit.
