Goose Lane Editions A Like Vision: The Group of Seven and Tom Thomson
Book SynopsisWinner, Canadian Museums Association’s Outstanding Achievement in Research Award and IPPY Awards Silver Medal (Fine Art)A Toronto Star Holiday Gift Guide SelectionA Like Vision is a lavish celebration of the legacy of Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, Canada’s canonical landscape painters. The Group’s depiction of the rugged beauty of the Canadian landscape — from the coastal mountains of British Columbia to the north shore of Lake Superior, the villages of rural Quebec, and the rocky, windswept coves of Newfoundland — charged Canadians to experience their country in a bold new light and changed the face of Canadian art forever. Through their vigorous and expressive painterly style and vibrant colours, the Group of Seven significantly contributed to Canada’s sense of autonomy and identity as a modern state in the aftermath of the First World War.Featuring three hundred full-colour images, A Like Vision includes a lead essay by Ian A.C. Dejardin, Executive Director of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, and contributions by a host of artists, curators, and writers. Among them are Indigenous art historian and curator Gerald McMaster, filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal, novelists David Macfarlane and Jane Urquhart, painters John Hartman and Robert Houle, and Inuk writer Tarralik Duffy. One hundred years on from the Group’s first exhibition in 1920, A Like Vision is both a chance to review the Group’s legacy and a tribute to these giants of Canadian art and culture.Trade Review"This beautifully produced book with full colour reproductions ... looks at the paintings through the eyes of immigrants or Indigenous people. As Milroy writes in her introduction, ‘These are either the least political paintings ever made (just trees, please, we’re Canadian) or the most — in what they leave out.’" * Toronto Star *"Exceptionally informative as a collective enterprise expertly showcasing the life and art of Tom Thomson." * Midwest Book Review *“A gorgeous book featuring the art of the Group of Seven, yes, but also an examination of how their painting fits into a longer history of this land that includes — and excludes — Indigenous peoples. Beautiful and thought-provoking.” -- Deborah Dundas * Toronto Star's “Book Gift Guide” *

Book SynopsisOne of the greatest and most in uential architects of Japan's postwar generation, Shinohara Kazuo (1925-2006) has remained virtually unknown outside the small community of devoted followers. As one of the leaders of architectural movement Metabolism, Shinohara achieved cult- gure stature with sublimely beautiful, purist houses that break away from Japan's postwar suburban architecture.Perhaps the most iconic of Shinohara's works, House of White (1964-66), rearranges a familiar design palette-a square plan, a pointed roof, white walls, and a symbolic heart pillar-to give the almost oceanic spaciousness through abstraction. The underlying formalism in Shinohara's architecture-its basic explorations of geometry and color-lends his work a poetic quality that fuses simplicity and surprise, the ordered and the unexpected. This volume brings together new scholarship from the foremost specialists on Shinohara and Japan's modern architecture. New perspectives and historical frameworks range from the develop- ment of the small house as a building type in postwar Japan to Shinohara's engagement with French critical theory. Hitherto unpublished archival drawings and personal travel photographsby Shinohara complement the essays.

Oro Editions Faux Mountains
Book SynopsisArtificial mountains are a worldwide reality. Their presence influenced the history of urbanism, architecture, and landscape architecture. Burial sites use, very frequently, the intimidating shape of the man-made mountain. Incense burners in ancient China evoked the Five Sacred Mountains. Mount Parnassus in Greece became an important element in European garden history and a symbol of the Renaissance. In the Baroque Rome of the 17th century the most important artists worked on the constructions of huge ephemeral mounds in order to express more or less codified messages. The model of the artificial mountain was used as well during the French Revolution: the famous celebration of the Supreme Being took place on a gigantic faux mountain. The history of landscape architecture is characterized by the construction of architectural mounds, often built by using local excavation material. The industrial revolution acted as another source for the rise of an anthropic topography, creating forms, which we do not recognise anymore as totally artificial. Architects have found in the form of mountains a model and a gestalt with which to play in an ironic way. In twentieth-century art, mountains are ubiquitous, culminating in Robert Smithson’s masterful exploration of reversed, displaced, and rebuilt mountains. Michael Jakob’s study is the first one to address this fascinating worldwide phenomenon stretching from Antiquity to our days

Columbia Books on Architecture and the City Ways of Knowing Cities
Book SynopsisTechnology mediates how we know and experience cities, and the nature of this mediation has always been deeply political. Today, the production and deployment of data is at the forefront of projects to grasp and reshape urban life. Ways of Knowing Cities considers the role of technology in generating, materializing, and contesting urban epistemologies—tracing an arc from ubiquitous sites of “smart” urbanism, to discrete struggles over infrastructural governance, to forgotten histories of segregation now naturalized in urban algorithms, to exceptional territories of border policing. Bringing together architects, urbanists, artists, and scholars of critical migration studies, media theory, geography, anthropology, and literature, the essays stage a deeply interdisciplinary conversation, interrogating the ways in which certain ways of knowing are predicated on the erasure of others. In this opening, the book engages the information systems that structure urban space and social life in it, historically and in the present moment, to imagine alternative practices and generate new critical perspectives on spatial research.Ways of Knowing Cities includes texts by Eve Blau, Simone Browne, Maribel Casas-Cortes, Wendy Chun, Sebastian Cobarrubias, Beth Coleman, V. Mitch McEwen, Orit Halpern, Charles Heller, Shannon Mattern, Leah Meisterlin, Tinashe Mushakavanhu, Nontsikelelo Mutiti, Dietmar Offenhuber, Lorenzo Pezzani, Anita Say Chan, and Matthew W. Wilson.

Book SynopsisThe final work of Nobel Prize-winning writer Günter Grass – a witty and elegiac series of meditations on writing, growing old, and the world.Suddenly, in spite of the trials of old age, and with the end in sight, everything seems possible again: love letters, soliloquies, scenes of jealousy, swan songs, social satire, and moments of happiness.Only an ageing artist who had once more cheated death could get to work with such wisdom, defiance and wit. A wealth of touching stories is condensed into artful miniatures. Wakefield Press The Subversion of Images: Notes Illustrated with
Book SynopsisFirst edited and published by Marcel Marien in 1968 in a limited edition of 230 copies, half a year after Paul Nouge's death, The Subversion of Images is a miniature classic in both the photobook and surrealist canons. It collects Nouge's notes and photographs from 1929 1930 to form a guidebook to the surrealist image. Nouge here outlines his conception of the object and outlines the surrealist approach to it, while also offering an accompaniment to the visual work of his colleague, Rene Magritte, whose paintings he sometimes titled. How might a tangle of string elicit terror? How might the suppression of an object move one to sentimentality? What is the effect of a pair of gloves on a loaf of sliced bread?Nouge's accompanying photographs explore these notions, and feature a number of his Belgian surrealist colleagues. This translation is presented as a facsimile of the original edition, with an afterword by Xavier Canonne, director of the Musee de la Photographie.A biochemist by trade, Paul Nouge (1895 1967) was a leading light of Belgian Surrealism and its primary theorist, as well as a decisive influence on such Lettrists and Situationists as Guy Debord and Gil J. Wolman, who would take inspiration from his conception of plagiarism for what would come to be termed detournement. Nouge steered the Brussels surrealist group toward a more rational approach to visual and verbal language that discarded the Parisian surrealists' proclivity for irrationality and occultism.

I saw on Twitter that she had been hit with a drug possession charge, which she insisted was a scheme to keep her Weinstein dirt quiet. I hadn''t even read her Weinstein story… I still wanted to know that the articles were being published, and in large quantities, but reading stories of abuse and humiliation was as stupefying as a hangover. I didn''t feel empowered; I only felt more hopeless. I wanted to watch the patriarchy go up in flames, but I wasn''t excited about what was being pitched to replace it. If we got all of it out in the open, what would we have left? My fear was that guilt would destroy the classics and there''d be no one left to fuck. Vintage Publishing House of Nutter: The Rebel Tailor of Savile Row
Book SynopsisA wildly entertaining biography of the British fashion designer who set the trends for rock royalty from the Beatles to Mick Jagger to Elton John.Tommy Nutter was a visionary tailor in the bespoke tradition who dressed everybody from Lord Montagu of Beaulieu to Twiggy, who outfitteds three of the Beatles for the cover of Abbey Road (George Harrison preferred jeans), who put Mick Jagger in a white suit for his wedding to Bianca and who dressed Elton John for years, using the singer as his muse for his signature outrageous style. Nutter was alluring for his ambiguity -- a chameleon who could rub shoulders with Princess Margaret and then dance with the drag queens at Last Resort -- and his clothes were the physical expression of a sharp, audacious wit.House of Nutter charts Tommy Nutter’s dramatic career that spanned barely 23 years, ending in 1992 with his untimely death. It is a history of London during an era of economic and cultural upheaval, a celebration of the methods and traditions of Savile Row; and an elegy for what was lost during the worst days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. With archival access to photos, letters and interviews from Tommy Nutter's sole living relative, his brother, David, Lance Richardson takes us behind the '70s glamour to explore the public face and private life of one of Britain's most respected yet rule-breaking bespoke clothiers and the celebrities he dressed.Trade ReviewRichardson has created a pattern-perfect double-breasted biography of two gay brothers, who, in an unlikely rags to riches story, were brought up in north London and went on to shape the social and sartorial side of life in the 1960s -- Helen Davies * Sunday Times, **Books of the Year** *Captivating ... an engaging analysis of the British class system and the fashion industry, gay liberation and the Aids crisis, which plays out like a binge-worthy Netflix series -- Mark C O'Flaherty * Financial Times *Splendidly readable and gossipy ... a gripping read that is as much social history as it is biography ... House of Nutter, Richardson's first book, is a fine match of author and subject. He writes with flair and erudition, making extensive use of interviews with David, and bringing something new to the evocation of an era that might seem overfamiliar ... it's hard to find fault with this thoroughly enjoyably glimpse into high fashion and low life -- Alexander Larman * The Observer *What makes Lance Richardson's biography so much more than a humdrum story of rags to riches -- or rather rags to bespoke -- is its illuminating and vividly drawn account of the milieu, both social and sartorial, in which Nutter moved, and the intriguing parallel history of his elder brother, David -- Mick Brown * Sunday Telegraph *Lance Richardson’s lively, affectionate, occasionally breathless book is a double narrative, the story of two brothers who rose from modest north London origins to the fringes of international stardom ... Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd Cutting Edge: Modernist British Printmaking
Book SynopsisA vividly illustrated catalogue of linocuts by the Modern British printmakers of the Grosvenor School of Art. The Grosvenor School of Modern Art was founded by the influential teacher, painter and wood-engraver Iain McNab in 1925. Situated in London’s Pimlico district, the school played a key role in the story of modern British printmaking between the World Wars. The Grosvenor School artists received critical acclaim in their time that continued until the late 1930s under the influence of Claude Flight who pioneered a revolutionary method of making the simple linocut to dynamic and colourful effect. Cyril Power, a lecturer in architecture at the school, and Sybil Andrews, the School Secretary, were two of Flight’s star students. Whilst incorporating the avant-garde values of Cubism, Futurism and Vorticism, the Grosvenor School printmakers brought their own unique interpretation of the contemporary world to the medium of linocut in images that are strikingly familiar to this day. They are included in the print collections of the world’s major museums, including the British Museum, the MoMA in New York and the Australian National Gallery. Cutting Edge, which accompanied an exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery, illustrates over 120 linocuts, drawings and posters by Grosvenor School artists; its thematic layout focuses on the key components which made up their dynamic and rhythmic visual imagery. For the first time, three Australian printmakers, Dorrit Black, Ethel Spowers and Eveline Syme - who played a major part in the Grosvenor School story - are included in a major museum exhibition outside of Australia.Table of ContentsDirector’s Foreword – Jennifer Scott Preface – Gordon Samuel Life in Linocuts: The Printmakers of the Grosvenor School of Modern Art – Hana Leaper 1. Le Corbusier is widely acknowledged as the most influential architect of the twentieth century. As extensively researched and documented as his works are, however, they have never been exhaustively surveyed in photographs until now. Photographer Richard Pare has crossed the globe for years to document the extant works of Le Corbusier - from his first villas in Switzerland to his mid-career works in his role as the first global architect in locations as far-flung as Argentina and Russia, and his late works, including his sole North American project, at Harvard University, and an extensive civic plan for Chandigarh, India. Le Corbusier: The Built Work provides numerous views of each project to bring a fuller understanding of the architect's command of space, sometimes surprising use of materials and color, and the almost ineffable qualities that only result from a commanding synthesis of all aspects of design. With an authoritative text by scholar and curator Jean-Louis Cohen, Le Corbusier: The Built Work is a groundbreaking opportunity to appreciate the master's work anew.Trade Review"Pare traveled the world photographing the buildings of master architect Le Corbusier. This book collects photos of Le Corbusier’s villas in Switzerland, his visual art center at Harvard University, and his multiplex structures in Chandigarh, India, and more." - Publishers Weekly "The 20th century was one of the more divisive eras in architectural history, with pioneers like Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Walter Gropius paving the way for modernism - sometimes to the distaste of critics and the public. But perhaps no architect was as controversial during that era as Le Corbusier, today beloved and respected by architecture buffs around the world.... Today, the polarizing figure is the subject of a new book Le Corbusier: The Built Work, a photographic survey by Richard Pare of nearly the entire oeuvre of the architect reflecting the current state of his buildings." - Architectural Digest "Even the most fanatical Le Corbusier devotee will likely encounter a project - of cavernous concrete, brightly-painted plaster, or towering glass walls - that they haven’t yet seen." - Metropolis Pare's "Pare's work is skillful, characterful, and generous in quantity... You have seen these buildings and their interiors before, but you've never seen them quite like this." - Interior Design “English photographer Richard Pare embarked on a globetrotting odyssey to chronicle in more detail than ever before the illustrious Swiss-French designer’s vast architectural footprint.” - Departures International “It is definitely worth adding to your collection.” - Life of an Architect
