Book Synopsis"Monet, van Gogh and Cezanne feature in a pleasurable Royal Academy show that demonstrates why the Impressionists remain the world's favourite set of artists." — Independent Best known for their superlative oils on canvas, Degas, Cézanne, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh and numerous other Impressionists and Post-Impressionists also regularly used paper as a support for works in watercolour, gouache, pencil, tempera and that most elusive of media, pastel. Their practice transformed the status of these works from preparatory studies, to be left in the studio and not shown in public, to works of art in their own right. With insightful texts by acknowledged experts in the field, this sumptuous book brings together some 70 masterworks on paper by leading Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists. Their bold innovations challenged traditional attitudes, radically transformed the future direction of art and ultimately paved the way for later movements such as Abstract Expressionism.Trade Review"Monet, van Gogh and Cezanne feature in a pleasurable Royal Academy show that demonstrates why the Impressionists remain the world's favourite set of artists." - Independent

Book SynopsisNational Anthem is a celebration of outsiders and the immense beauty of chosen families everywhere. Growing up in Colorado with his father in the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association, Luke Gilford spent his formative years around the rodeo, an American institution that has often been associated with conservatism and homophobia. It was only later, when he discovered the International Gay Rodeo Association (IGRA), that he began to see himself as part of a rodeo family. The IGRA is the organizing body for LGBTQ+ cowboy and cowgirl communities in North America, a safe space for all genders and races. The queer rodeo brings in participants from rural regions all over America for structured educational programs and competitions, facilitating opportunities to hone athletic skills, connection and care for animals, personal integrity, self-confidence and support for one another. Book SynopsisRedefining paradigms of creation around a renewed vision of humankind and nature. A renaissance is underway that can be described as ?wild,? articulated around a renewed vision of humankind and nature. It can be seen as a response to environmental, societal, and ethical issues so acute that the very survival of humankind is in question. Artistic, philosophical, and political, it builds on the scientific revolutions of the last decades and positions itself in relation to technoscientific and transhumanist promises. Within this wild renaissance, humankind no longer aspires to impose its will on a passive, purposeless nature. Instead, it begins to listen to a new partner: the world around it. As humanity discovers the potential of these forces, it enters a relationship with them and allys its energy with its own. This volume explores this burgeoning renaissance by bringing together established figures in contemporary art and design with emerging creators at the forefront of this new movement. The works and practices analyzed here are shown in a new light, with a fresh understanding of their historical grounding, conceptual underpinnings, and significance for the present.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisPut your money on Leonardo in this restaging of the Turner prize of the High Renaissance. The GuardianAt the turn of the 16th century, three titans of the Italian Renaissance briefly crossed paths, competing for the attention of the most powerful patrons in Republican Florence. In January 1504 the city's most prominent artists came together to advise on an appropriate location for Michelangelo's nearly finished sculpture of David. Among them was Leonardo da Vinci, who like Michelangelo had only recently returned to his native Florence. In this beautifully designed book, Scott Nethersole and Per Rumberg take Michelangelo's celebrated Taddei Tondo as their starting point, and examine the rivalry between Michelangelo and Leonardo, and the influence of both on the young Raphael. Some of the finest examples of Italian Renaissance drawing are reproduced, including Leonardo's Burlington House Cartoon and studies by Leonardo and Michelangelo for their murals commissioned by the Florentine government for the newly constructed council hall in the Palazzo della Signoria.

Book Synopsis"I recommend to every Architect, designer and those who have a passion for New York to own this magnificent book…there is no better on the extraordinary Beaux Arts of New York." —Lemeau, Decorator's Insider "This great, beautiful, glossy, polychromatic slab of a book more than does justice to an epic period in architecture when some of the world’s most luscious buildings were designed for some of the most unpleasant people in American history." — Timothy Brittain-Catlin, World of Interiors "New York would be little more than another faceless glass-and-steel city were it not for its Gilded Age buildings and institutions... An American Renaissance: Beaux-Arts Architecture in New York City, written by Phillip James Dodd with photography by Jonathan Wallen, is a gilded embrace of this legacy."— The Critic The Gilded Age, also referred to as the American Renaissance, is an era associated with unparalleled growth, technological advancement, prosperity, and cultural change. Spanning from the 1870s to the 1930s, it marks the first time that the titans of American finance and industry had more wealth than their European counterparts. As the centre of this dynamic economy, New York City attracted immigrant workers and millionaires alike. It was not enough for the self-appointed elite to just build their own grand châteaux and palazzos along Fifth Avenue—collectively they dreamed of creating a new metropolis to rival the great cultural capitals of London, Paris, and Rome. To flaunt their newly acquired wealth they needed an architecture dripping in embellishment and historical reference. Enter the Beaux-Arts. This book, which has been painstakingly researched and beautifully photographed over many years, takes a close look at 20 of the finest examples of Beaux-Arts architecture in New York City. While showing public exteriors, its focus is on the lavish interiors that are associated with the opulence of the Gilded Age—often providing a glimpse inside buildings not otherwise viewable to the public. While some of the buildings and monuments featured are world-renowned landmarks recognisable and accessible to all, others are obscure buildings that history has forgotten. Set amid the magnificent achievements of an American Renaissance, this book recounts not only the fascinating stories of some of New York’s most famous and significant Beaux-Arts landmarks, it also recalls the lives of those who commissioned, designed, and built them. These are some of the most acclaimed architects, artists, and artisans of the day—Daniel Chester French, Cass Gilbert, Charles McKim, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and Stanford White—and some of the most prominent millionaires in American history—Henry Clay Frick, Jay Gould, Otto Kahn, J.P. Morgan, John D. Rockefeller, and the ubiquitous Astor and Vanderbilt families. Names that—as Julian Fellowes (the acclaimed director of Downton Abbey) notes in the Foreword—“still reek of money.” Excerpt from the IntroductionTrade Review"I recommend to every Architect, designer and those who have a passion for New York to own this magnificent book…there is no better on the extraordinary Beaux Arts of New York." - Lemeau, Decorator's Insider"This great, beautiful, glossy, polychromatic slab of a book more than does justice to an epic period in architecture when some of the world’s most luscious buildings were designed for some of the most unpleasant people in American history." - Timothy Brittain-Catlin, World of Interiors"Full-color photography from Wallen and insightful commentary by Dodd welcome readers into some of New York’s celebrated Beaux-Arts landmarks—including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Grand Central Terminal and some that are not open to the public—and the world of those who imagined them." - Tani Levitt, Gotham Mag"But to hold us over, there’s a dazzling new book, An American Renaissance: Beaux-Arts Architecture in New York City (from Images Publishing, with a forward by TGA creator Julian Fellowes), which richly examines the lasting architectural legacy of the era’s big-spending industry titans." - Ann D'Adamo, Black Book Mag"Full-color photography from Wallen and insightful commentary by Dodd welcome readers into some of New York's celebrated Beaux-Arts landmarks." - Tani Levitt, Modern Luxury"In Phillip James Dodd’s glorious new book, An American Renaissance: Beaux-Arts Architecture in New York City, you’ll find buildings whose own names were serially preceded by their architect’s in common conversation—not out of some formal, Gilded Age sense of obligation but because they deserved to be." - AirMail"New York would be little more than another faceless glass-and-steel city were it not for its Gilded Age buildings and institutions... Very suitable for students on courses which involve art design and the use of modern materials" --Derrick Parker, Univ. of Portsmouth, Dept. It can then be a resource for students as they travel through the major. Book SynopsisThe son of artist parents, Dahmane was born in Paris on 21 April 1959. His father was a painter and engraver, and his mother a poet and painter. Dahmane became familiar with photography at an early age, being first introduced to it by his grandmother and a photographer friend of his parents. At 15 he began to develop a consuming interest in nude photography, gathering his first experience with two classmates from secondary school, who modelled for him. His predilection for black and white photography has continued into the Millennium; the medium allows him to refine and develop his technique as part of an on-going process. He quickly learned that Leica lenses give you the best results, and for this reason, prefers Leica SLRs and enlargers. Dahmane published his first work before he was 20, including an extensive reportage on the suffering of animals in zoos. At the same time, he worked as a freelance portrait photographer for a range of French magazines, including LExpansion, Capital, LExpress, Le Figaro, VSD, Closer, LUsine Nouvelle and others. Several volumes of his nudes have been released, including Dahmane (bags), Dressed Nudes (Futami-Shobo), Dressed Nudes (Edition Skylight and La Musardine), Erotic Sessions (Edition Skylight and La Musardine) and Addicted to Nudes (Edition Skylight and La Musardine). His nude works have been published all over the world and exhibited in London, Paris, Rome and Los Angeles, among other places. Dahmane still lives in Paris, and continues to devote himself to photographing female nudes and doing portraits. He is represented by the Claude Lemand Gallery.

Book SynopsisBarry Herniman shows the reader how to capture the essence of a scene, and to inject that extra something: mood and atmosphere. This 'extra something' is what many watercolour artists seek, and it is clearly explained and beautifully demonstrated in this practical and enthralling guide to painting a variety of landscapes. This beautiful book brings Barry Herniman's stunning artwork to the fore with a sumptuous redesign, complete with new inspirational artworks and expanded sections on colour mixing and techniques.Trade ReviewCharacter, ambience and style add up to striking and memorable paintings. Expert artist Barry Herniman shares his secrets so you can invest your watercolours with all three. This new expanded edition of the book brings Barry's stunning artwork to the fore with a sumptuous redesign, complete with new inspirational artworks and expanded information on colour mixing and watercolour techniques. 5 step-by-step projects Dozens of inspirational finished paintings All techniques clearly explained and demonstrated. * The Artist *Painting Mood and Atmosphere in Watercolour by Barry Herniman 'Herr Flick' is back again, doing what he does best – making watercolours sing with colour and light, no traditional pale paintings to be found here. Barry makes his watercolour paintings look more like acrylics with his strong tones and use of vivid colours. Barry describes his favourite techniques, in particular, paint flicking. He also runs through the materials he uses and recommends, and gives an insight into how he works as an artist - via his use of a sketchbook through to the final painting. -- Michele Tilston Fletcher * Customer review *Popular artist and tutor, Barry Herniman shows you how to use watercolour to create mood and atmosphere in your paintings. Information on materials, colour mixing and techniques is followed by step-by-step demonstrations that clearly explain how to use your medium to best advantage. The demonstrations include breaking waves, stormy skies, weathered timbers, frosty morning and harbour lights. * Leisure Painter *This isn't a new book (it first appeared in 2004), but it's always been one of the best and this revised edition contains much re-origination as well as new material that brings it bang up to date. I'm always conflicted about recommending expanded re-issues. Should I tell you it's definitely worth buying a book you perhaps already have, which it often is; or should I suggest that, if you're happy with what you've got, your next purchase should be something new? In the end, all I can do is tell you what I like and leave the decision to you. Mood and atmosphere are those indefinable qualities that make a painting sing and give the viewer a sense of what it was like to be there when the scene was painted. "Each of us has our own perfect time of day, a favourite season or certain weather conditions that set our senses alight," says Barry. "When these elements prevail, that is the time to get painting." That takes care of the creative aspects: it's about being enthused yourself so you can put your feelings into your work, But there are practical considerations as well. Colour, light and composition all play a part and Barry explains how to use these elements to achieve the results you want. His subjects include landscapes, buildings, skies and water and his techniques involve balancing the elements of composition, the use of perspective and contrasting colour and the careful placing of highlights. This particular reissue makes for an exciting and inspirational read. * Paint magazine *Table of ContentsIntroduction Materials Colour mixing Seasonal atmosphere Capturing the mood Techniques Using a sketchbook Step-by-step demonstrations Breaking Waves Stormy Skies Weathered Timbers Frosty Morning Harbour ‘Lights’ Index

Atelier Editions An Illustrated Catalog of American Fruits & Nuts:

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA kaleidoscopic celebration of the USDA’s pomological collection, offering an engaging, biophillic meditation upon the sweetest of the earth’s produce The United States Department of Agriculture Pomological Watercolor Collection encompasses 7,497 botanical watercolor paintings of evolving fruit and nut varieties, alongside specimens introduced by USDA plant explorers from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Assembled between 1886 and 1942, the collection's remarkable, botanically accurate watercolors were executed by some 21 professional artists (including nine women). Authored largely before the widespread application of photography, the watercolors were intended to aid accurate identification and examination of fruit varietals, for the nation’s fruit growers. Documenting the transformation of American pomology, the science of fruit breeding and production, and the horticultural innovations accountable for contemporary fruit cultivation and consumption, the USDA’s collection offers fascinating anthropological and horticultural insights concerning the fruits we ecstatically devour, and why. With an abundance of reproductions from the collection, this gorgeous volume encompasses fruit-suffused anecdotes and observations drawn from the fields of archaeology and anthropology, horticulture and literature, ancient representation and contemporary visual art. It includes contributions by authors Jacqueline Landy, John McPhee, Michael Pollan and Marina Vitaglione.Trade ReviewThe pictures are virtuosic... you feel you could reach out and pick from it. -- Sebastian Smee * Washington Post *These artists were in the business of rivaling color photography, not yet widely used. More than a picture book, this is a survey of visual learning; prior to the orange’s introduction in Europe during the Renaissance, Westerners went around calling the shade of the same name ‘yellow-red.’ -- Lizzy Harding * Bookforum *Not only visually arresting, but botanically accurate. -- Emily Gosling * Creative Boom *That the U.S. Department of Agriculture and art could be on speaking terms seems astonishing. Yet from 1886 to 1942 the agency commissioned artists to document fruits and nuts grown in the United States, to record the varieties and help with identification at a time when the use of color photography was not widespread. The beautiful new book exhibits but a fraction of the 7,584 botanical watercolor paintings in the collection. Lively, informative text accompanies the illustrations. -- Florence Fabricant * New York Times Cooking *A selection of the most delectable specimens. From the vivid green oranges grown in Florida to the delicate yellow cherries found in Michigan, the book provides a sumptuous journey of discovery. -- Baya Simmons * Financial Times *The book’s main attraction is its hundreds of lusciously detailed, full-color illustrations: the reader can almost taste and smell the bright, juicy fruits and nuts across its pages. But the catalogue’s accompanying texts by Adam Leith Goliner, Jaqueline Landey, John McPhee, and Michael Pollan about each fruit’s history and makeup — which encompass elements of archaeology, anthropology, botany, and the arts — are unexpectedly illuminating, and nearly as delightful. -- Lauren Moya Ford * Hyperallergic *Because color photography was not yet reliable in the 1890s, the division relied on the meticulous observation and brushwork of Newton and her colleagues to record the bounty harvested from the continent’s sprawling orchards and fields. Their stunning pictures of oranges and apples and strawberries and persimmons, which have long been a resource for specialists on the USDA website, have finally received the mainstream attention they deserve. -- Jonathon Keats * Forbes *The technical accuracy of these illustrations is a marvel, finding beauty even in the diseased and rotten... -- Holly Black * Elephant *

Book SynopsisOn October 1, 1958, the world’s first civilian space agency opened for business as an emergency response to the Soviet Union’s launch of Sputnik a year earlier. Within a decade, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, universally known as NASA, had evolved from modest research teams experimenting with small converted rockets into one of the greatest technological and managerial enterprises ever known, capable of sending people to the Moon aboard gigantic rockets and of dispatching robot explorers to Venus, Mars, and worlds far beyond. In spite of occasional, tragic setbacks in NASA’s history, the Apollo lunar landing project remains a byword for American ingenuity; the winged space shuttles spearheaded the International Space Station and a dazzling array of astronomical satellites and robotic landers, and Earth observation programs have transformed our understanding of the cosmos and our home world’s fragile place within it. Throughout NASA’s 60-year history, images have played a central role. Who today is not familiar with the Hubble Space Telescope’s mesmerizing views of the universe or the pin-sharp panoramas of Mars from NASA’s surface rovers? And who could forget the photographs of the first men walking on the Moon? Researched with the collaboration of NASA, this collection gathers more than 400 historic photographs and rare concept renderings, scanned and remastered using the latest technology and reproduced in extra-large size. Texts by science and technology journalist Piers Bizony, former NASA chief historian Roger Launius, and best-selling Apollo historian Andrew Chaikin—and an extensive mission checklist documenting the key human and robotic missions—round out this comprehensive exploration of NASA, from its earliest days to its current development of new space systems for the future. The NASA Archives is more than just a fascinating pictorial history of the U.S. space program. It is also a profound meditation on why we choose to explore space and how we will carry on this grandest of all adventures in the years to come.Trade Review“We came all this way to explore the Moon, and the most important thing we discovered was the Earth.” * Bill Anders, Apollo 8 astronaut *“The book is exquisite—a tour-de-force and an important chronicle, not to mention a beautiful arts piece.” * Dr. John Grunsfeld *“Even dedicated space enthusiasts may be startled by what they see on these pages… The documentary photography on display here is tangible, gorgeous, startling, almost overwhelming. It simply leaves no room for disbelief.” * American Scientist *“This beautiful book will inspire the astronaut in all of us.” * Los Angeles Times *
