  • Witchcraft. The Library of Esoterica

Taschen GmbH Witchcraft. The Library of Esoterica

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisInitiating readers in the fascinating and complex history of witchcraft, from the goddess mythologies of ancient cultures to the contemporary embrace of the craft by modern artists and activists, this expansive tome conjures up a breathtaking overview of an age-old tradition. Rooted in legend, folklore, and myth, the archetype of the witch has evolved from the tales of Odysseus and Circe, the Celtic seductress Cerridwen, and the myth of Hecate, fierce ruler of the moonlit night. In Witchcraft we survey her many incarnations since, as she shape-shifts through the centuries, alternately transforming into mother, nymph, and crone—seductress and destroyer. Edited by Jessica Hundley, and co-edited by author, scholar, and practitioner Pam Grossman, this enthralling visual chronicle is the first of its kind, a deep dive into the complex symbologies behind witchcraft traditions, as explored through the history of art itself. The witch has played muse to great artists throughout time, from the dark seductions of Francisco José de Goya and Albrecht Dürer to the elegant paean to the magickal feminine as re-imagined by the Surrealist circle of Remedios Varo, Leonora Carrington, and Leonor Fini. The witch has spellbound through folktales and dramatic literature as well, from the poison apples of The Brothers Grimm, to the Weird Sisters gathered at their black cauldron in Shakespeare’s Macbeth, to L. Frank Baum’s iconic Wicked Witch of the West, cackling over the fate of Dorothy. Throughout this entrancing visual voyage, we’ll also bear witness to the witch as she endures persecution and evolves into empowerment, a contemporary symbol of bold defiance and potent nonconformity. Featuring enlightening essays by modern practitioners like Kristen J. Sollée and Judika Illes, as well interviews with authors and scholars such as Madeline Miller and Juliet Diaz, Witchcraft includes a vast range of cultural traditions that embrace magick as spiritual exploration and creative catharsis.Trade Review“…takes the fraught history of witches and imbues it with a magic befitting its subject… Witchcraft is a celebration of true, even threatening power—by those who possess it least, and deserve it most.” * W Magazine *“Eye-opening and thought-provoking.” * widewalls.ch *“A lavish coffee-table book. Lund Humphries Publishers Ltd Leonora Carrington: Surrealism, Alchemy and Art

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisNow available in paperback, this book remains the definitive survey of the life and work of Surrealist artist Leonora Carrington (1917-2011). Carrington burst onto the Surrealist scene in 1936, when, as a precocious nineteen-year-old debutante, she escaped the stultifying demands of her wealthy English family by running away to Paris with her lover Max Ernst. She was immediately championed by Andre Breton, who responded enthusiastically to her fantastical, dark and satirical writing style and her interest in fairy tales and the occult. Her stories were included in Surrealist publications, and her paintings in the Surrealists' exhibitions. After the dramas and tragic separations of the Second World War, Carrington ended up in the 1940s as part of the circle of Surrealist European emigres living in Mexico City. Close friends with Luis Bunuel, Benjamin Peret, Octavio Paz and a host of both expatriate Surrealists and Mexican modernists, Carrington was at the centre of Mexican cultural life, while still maintaining her European connections. Leonora Carrington: Surrealism, Alchemy and Art provides a fascinating overview of this intriguing artist's rich body of work. The author considers Carrington's preoccupation with alchemy and the occult, and explores the influence of indigenous Mexican culture and beliefs on her production.Trade Review'full of stunning colour reproductions of Carrington's visionary art, whose hybrid forms borrow from nature, culture and religion in order to take themselves beyond all three. Book SynopsisThe American photographer Francesca Woodman (1958–1981) created a body of fascinating photographic works in a few intense years before her premature death. Her oeuvre has been the object of numerous in-depth studies and major exhibitions in recent years, and her photographs have inspired artists all over the world. Woodman’s photographs explore gender, representation, sexuality and body. Her production includes several self-portraits, using herself and her friends as models. The figures are often placed behind furniture and other interior elements; occasionally, the images are blurred in such a way that their identity is hidden from the viewer. The intimate nature of the subject matter is enhanced by the small formats. Woodman worked in unusual settings such as derelict buildings, using mirrors and glass to evoke surrealist and occasionally claustrophobic moods. Moderna Museet will present some hundred photographs by Francesca Woodman, with a selection from the series and themes she explored. The exhibition is produced by Moderna Museet in association with Betty and George Woodman and the Estate of Francesca Woodman. Alongside this exhibition, Moderna Museet will present a compilation of photography from the same period from its collection, to show Francesca Woodman in context and expand the perspective on her oeuvre to the public.

National Galleries of Scotland Joan Eardley: A Sense of Place

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisJoan Eardley (1921-1963) is one of Scotland's most admired artists. During a career that lasted barely fifteen years, she concentrated on two very distinct themes: children in the Townhead area of central Glasgow, and the fishing village of Catterline, just south of Aberdeen, with its leaden skies and wild sea. The contrast between this urban and rural subject matter is self-evident, but the two are not, at heart, so very different. Townhead and Catterline were home to tight-knit communities, living under extreme pressure: Townhead suffered from overcrowding and poverty, and Catterline from depopulation brought about by the declining fishing industry. Eardley was inspired by the humanity she found in both places. These two intertwining strands are the focus of this book, which looks in detail at Eardley's working processes. Her method can be traced from rough sketches and photographs through to pastel drawings and large oil paintings. Identifying many of Eardley's subjects and drawing on unpublished letters, archival records and interviews, the authors provide a new and remarkably detailed account of Eardley's life and art.Table of ContentsDirectors' Foreword Introduction TOWNHEAD Townhead and Children Children and the Street CATTERLINE Early Paintings of Catterline The South Row of Cottages Around No. 1 Catterline Beach and Sea Boats on the Shore and the Sea View of the Bay Chronology Maps of Townhead and Catterline Concise Bibliography Notes and References Credits

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisHans Hofmann (1880-1966) was a pivotal figure in Abstract Expressionism and stands as one of the most important characters of post-war American art. This ground-breaking catalogue raisonne of paintings, which has been painstakingly researched over sixteen years, is both an invaluable scholarly resource and a celebration of Hofmann's remarkable artistic achievements.Hofmann's long and productive career began in Paris in 1904 where the young artist absorbed the manifold influences of the city's avant-garde. Drawn back to Germany due to war, Hofmann, exempt from military service, opened an innovative school for art in Munich. The school's reputation spread internationally and, as the political situation in Germany deteriorated during the 1930s, Hofmann re-located his school to New York. The city, a center for emerging artistic talent, was the perfect environment for Hofmann to continue his teaching practice, which he did until 1958, when he devoted himself entirely to painting. Throughout his American years, Hofmann enlarged the expressive language of abstraction, through his innovative use of color, materiality and structure. This impressive three-volumed catalogue marks a milestone in the scholarship and understanding of Hofmann's huge contribution to twentieth-century art. Through insightful essays, meticulous catalogue entries and supporting academic apparatus, it is shown how Hofmann's exceptional body of work often defies categorization - his was a highly personal visual language with which he endlessly explored pictorial structures and chromatic relationships. Both visually stunning and academically robust, this publication is an essential purchase for all those with a keen interest in one of the twentieth century's most significant and original artists.Trade Review'By common consent, Hans Hofmann was one of the great painters of the postwar period, at once a superb colorist and a magnificent constructor of pictures. Now at last, almost fifty years after his death, we have what promises to be a definitive catalogue raisonne of his paintings, along with a detailed chronology of his life, an exhibition history, and interpretive essays by leading scholars. Book SynopsisToday, the works of Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) are among the most well known and celebrated in the world. In paintings such as Sunflowers, The Starry Night, and Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, we recognize an artist uniquely dexterous in the representation of texture and mood, light and place. Yet in his lifetime, van Gogh battled not only the disinterest of his contemporary audience but also devastating bouts of mental illness. His episodes of depression and anxiety would eventually claim his life, when, in 1890, he committed suicide shortly after his 37th birthday. This comprehensive study of Vincent van Gogh offers a complete catalogue of his 871 paintings, alongside writings and essays, charting the life and work of a master who continues to tower over art to this day.

Book SynopsisRETURN TO PLANET CUTE!!! Kawaii: How to Draw Really Cute Animals teaches you how to draw almost 100 different creatures in an adorable manner. Don't believe seagulls and stingrays can be cute? Think again! You don't need any specialist tools or materials to start drawing cute stuff: all you need is a biro or marker pen, then you're ready to go! In her latest book, artist and illustrator Angela Nguyen starts by teaching you the essential techniques of kawaii through quick and easy exercises on the basic shapes, effects and style. From there, jump straight into drawing the myriad beasts – small and big – you can find inside the book, from household pets to the exotic animals in the seas and skies. The clear and easy-to-follow step-by-step diagrams are great for visual learners, and make following the instructions for your kawaii critters a breeze. As a brand new addition to this series, interactive pages have been included to encourage you to get drawing straight away, and practice alongside Angela’s examples. A perfect book for beginners – add cute-appeal to your furry 'n' feathered companions in no time at all! Other title in the series is the incredibly popular Kawaii: How to Draw Really Cute Stuff Trade Review'Kawaii' is Japanese for cute, and here is the sequel to Kawaii: How To Draw Really Cute Stuff. In this book you can find out how to draw all kinds of animals in a cute manner and discover how to make your drawings look this way. You only need the minimum of drawing materials to draw anything in this book and you probably already own them. You also don’t need to be an artist as it is surprisingly simple to draw in this style; far more so than in the style associated with manga. The introduction explains quickly and simply with examples how to make your drawings look cute and appealing. The rest of the book contains the projects, which are divided into where the animals are found. There are pets and common wild animals, ones found in jungles, forest/grassland, water and on the farm. Choose from favourites like cats, dogs, penguins, owls and even dinosaurs or try a more unusual creature like a red panda, stingray, platypus or armadillo. Each animal is shown in several simple steps over two pages together with a fact about it and several poses to try. Unlike the first book this one is more of a workbook as the second page of each project has a drawing to finish and colour in yourself. This is a great way of practising and creating some scenes without having to wonder what to draw. Learn the cartoon shorthand of depicting moods, movement and more – it is surprisingly easy and fun, suitable for all ages and levels of art experience and rather addictive. It is also a great way of making original and personal greetings cards or any other decorative project and like its companion volume one for the keeper shelf. -- Rachel Hyde * myshelf.com *Table of ContentsEnter Planet Cute (Introduction) Chapter One: Getting Started Chapter Two: Close to Home - Learn to draw animals that we encounter every day in our immediate surroundings and homes Chapter Three: On the Farm - Get introduced to a whole barnyard of cute critters! Chapter Four: Forests and Grassland - From the bushlands of Australia to the foothills of the Andes, these animals can be found in forests and grasslands all over the world Chapter Five: Jungle and Safari - Meet the animals that inhabit our rainforests and the wilds of sub-Saharan Africa Chapter Six: On the Water - Discover how to draw a huge variety of water-based creatures, from deep-sea fish to coastal birds and aquatic mammals Index and Credits

Book SynopsisBe inspired to embroider all the elements of an idyllic English country garden. Suitable for beginners as well as accomplished embroiderers, Lorna Bateman’s beautiful book includes 12 practical projects for you to make and adorn with exquisite floral motifs. Lorna walks you through a variety of stitches including raised and textured stitches, teaching you to embroider individual flowers with them and how to incorporate these into an original garden motif. For the nature enthusiast, there is plenty to get excited about: an A–Z of English garden flowers and how to stitch them; a section on stitching common garden insects; and how to embroider iconic garden imagery such as birdbaths and garden ornaments. Roses are the archetypal cottage flower and Lorna describes how to incorporate a climbing rose, rose spray and standard rose in your designs. Embroidered Country Gardens is peppered throughout with seeds of wisdom: invaluable hints and tips from the author to help you develop your own skills and unique style. As well as step-by-step instructions, there are also detailed photographs, outline template drawings and a fully illustrated A–Z of stitches.Trade ReviewThis book is stunning! If you love traditional embroidery designs you'll love this. The projects are varied so there's something for every maker and Lorna Bateman guides you through each project making them simple to follow. I particularly love the fact that there's a section at the back showing you how to finish your work off. -- Lizzie Powell * Customer review *Even if you have never embroidered before you would be confident enough to pick up a needle and start after reading this book. It is probably best suited to beginners rather than more experienced stitchers as the author has gone into lots of detail on techniques such as backing your fabric and transferring designs. There are also detailed illustrations of different stitches as well as templates for 12 very pretty projects which will appeal to those who like their embroidery traditional. There are instructions to create many flowers from agapanthus to wisteria (especially love the hollyhocks and pansies) but also birds, insects, pots, tools and other "accessories". The idea is to give you enough confidence to design your own gardens. Projects range from a wall hanging to a scissor keeper and thread catcher. Practice blooms could easily be used for cards that will be treasured by family and friends. There are also embroidered buttons which would be a very special present for a knitter. Lorna Bateman has been a full-time embroidery teacher for 30 years. She has a business selling her designs in kit form at www.lornabatemanembroidery.com but this is her first book. -- Diane Chalmers * Customer review *I was delighted to receive this wonderful book of traditional embroidery. The instructions are so clear it’s brilliant for beginners of embroidery as well as experienced people like myself. There are a number of projects to complete along with patterns to get you started. I have already used several of the stitches to complete a task I have already started. Brilliant clear instructions to follow for all levels of embroiderers. -- Pauline Pritchard * Customer review *This book is a joy to read and use. Lots of information about different flowers, how and where they grow and how best to capture them in stitches. There're some lovely projects and detailed instructions on how to make and assemble them. It inspired me to create this piece of embroidery. It's a "go to" title for both experienced and novice stitches alike. -- Marion Dickins * Customer review *If you love floral garden embroidery, especially if you like stitching small motifs that have an exuberant garden feel to them, you're just going to love this book. Embroidered Country Gardens is a beautiful book, and it's a thorough book when it comes to instruction for this type of free-style surface embroidery. I didn't see any "cons" to the book. It'll make a beautiful, fun, and attainable addition to your embroidery library, whether for reference or for further project development. * Mary Corbet - Needle n Thread *This beautiful book was one of the most highly anticipated books here at Seashore Creative and it certainly lived up to expectations. What we love is the sheer volume of helpful information, particularly the detailed explanations of how to create each flower, plus the detail in the stitches, the patterns for tracing and templates. An absolutely stunning and gorgeous book! * Seashore Creative *Indulge your love of nature and gardens with this beautiful book on hand embroidery. You don’t have to be a keen gardener to appreciate these lovely designs featuring gardens at their best, flowers and the creatures that live there. This reminds me of the vintage embroidery transfers my mother had collected and with which I learned the craft as a child. There is even a crinoline lady in the garden amid the buttonhole hollyhocks and French knot delphiniums! But Ms Bateman has taken it farther than my old book showing basic freestyle stitches as she has introduced some stumpwork too as well as beads, covered washers, buttons, trapunto and needlelace. This is very much a 21st century embroidery book that takes the traditional idealized garden worked in freestyle stitches and mixes it up a bit; this really brings it all to life. Starting from the beginning you can discover how the author works and what tools and materials you need to obtain. There is advice on buying needles, storing threads and binding a hoop as well as a section with staged photographs showing how to cover buttons and washers, transfer designs, pad designs to make them raised and more. It is all very well explained with clear diagrams and explanatory text accompanying the many photographs. I like the way the best needle for each stitch is given, and there is even a section on perfecting those tricky bullion knots. Following this section is one giving an A-Z of garden flowers, showing the most commonly grown varieties in embroidery and explaining how they are worked. Roses get two whole pages all to themselves (most of the other flowers get a third of a page) and there are several different ways of working them using a variety of stitches. Also shown are things and creatures found in a garden that you might want to add, from archways to trugs, insects and birds together with that crinoline lady. Advice is given on how to design your own garden using very basic art materials like pens and coloured pencils. The rest of the book contains twelve projects showing how you can decorate all kinds of items using the author’s designs. In place of the usual cushions and cards are some items embroiders would enjoy making and using including an ort bag, scissor keeper, pincushion, needle case and sewing bag. My own favourite has to be the lovely clutch purse which doubles as a pencil case. Each project has a list of what you need, photograph of the item in situ and pattern/diagram. Instructions are text only in rather small print – perhaps it is as well that there are patterns for a glasses case and magnifying glass! Even a beginner can practice the stitches and techniques earlier in the book but the actual projects are aimed at intermediate level embroiderers who are also competent at making up items. Instructions for doing this are also given, again text only. This is a lovely book that certainly made me itch to start making that purse; one for the keeper shelf. If you cannot find a good range of embroidery and needlecraft materials locally try http://www.searchpress.com for a list of suppliers. -- Rachel A Hyde * MyShelf.com *I am very passionate about embroidery, I think the art of stitching fabulous designs lie in the ways of the teacher. Lorna Bateman both expertly explains and demonstrates the craft, and her 'pictures' come alive in this very, very beautiful book. The photography is stunning, and with the addition of templates, you will quickly be able to sew an amazing project. It will be easy to become a master of embroidery with just this one book. Embroidered Country Gardens lists all the tools you will need, it also gives you a comprehensive guide to needles.... if you thought there was only one kind think again!! The stitches are in A-Z order and what I loved was that each stitch is given a visual diagram, a hint and tip box and an easy to understand explanation. There are 12 projects, each one is perfect to practice your stitches and once again comes with specialist advice on getting a professional finish to your work. This is a must have book, inspired by nature it is quite divine. -- Tracy Shephard * Postcard Reviews *If you have ever been to one of Lorna Bateman's workshops then you will love this book. If you haven't then you are in for a treat. * SEW Region Magazine (June 2019) *Indulge your love of nature and gardens with this beautiful book on hand embroidery. Book SynopsisOnce upon a time, only typesetters needed to know about kerning, leading, ligatures, and hanging punctuation. Today, however, most of us work on computers, with access to hundreds of fonts, and we'd all like our letters, reports and other documents to look as good - and as readable - as possible. But what does all the confusing terminology about ink traps, letter spacing, and visual centring mean, and what are the rules for good typography? Type Matters! is a book of tips for everyday use, for all users of typography, from students and professionals to anyone who does any layout design on a computer. The book is arranged into three chapters: an introduction to the basics of typography; headline and display type; and setting text. Within each chapter there are sections devoted to particular principles or problems, such as selecting the right typeface, leading, and the treatment of numbers. Examples throughout show precisely what makes good typography - and, crucially, what doesn't. Authoritatively written and designed by a practitioner and teacher of typography, Type Matters! has a beautifully clear layout that reinforces the principles discussed throughout.Trade ReviewThis book is perfectly positioned to ease the newbie into the world of typography... it is a learner's bible. - SEATTLE POST INTELLIGENCER This book is pleasing to the touch, the nose, the eye, and when actually read, the hungry mind. - BLOGCRITICS A solid addition to the field of introductory texts on the subject of typography. - I LOVE TYPOGRAPHY

Book SynopsisTrade Review“Iris Apfel is one of the great style icons of modern times. Fashion influencer, brand ambassador, model, film star and designer. She has defined that aging is not just a destination but an art. More is more!!!! Iris defines a life well lived.” — John Demsey, Executive Group President, the Estée Lauder Companies “Iris is done little justice with the title icon! Icons seem fixed in time and inert. I have rarely met someone as vivid, as alive, as vital, vivacious, irreverent, joyous, relevant, and needed as Iris. She breathes young air, thinks young thoughts, and gathers no dust.” — Dries Van Noten “Personal style really originated with Iris Apfel; she has always espoused the virtues of not just dressing for yourself, but being who you are and doing it unapologetically, which is perhaps why she and her messaging and aesthetic have resonated so comprehensively. She’s a transcendent icon!” — Leandra Medine, manrepeller.com No one knows the rules of fashion better, and is more willing to break them, than Iris Apfel. As wildly unexpected as her styling might be, the effects never devolve into confusion or chaos. She is like a fashion Picasso, arranging diverse, unexpected elements in a compelling, completely original collage. — Harold Koda, former curator in charge, the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Iris Apfel is a rare bird. Warm, unapologetically outspoken, and whip-smart, she is opinionated about any and all manner of things, yet always accepts the quirks that make us individuals. Book SynopsisAre We Human? rethinks the philosophy of design in a multi-dimensional exploration from the very first tools and ornaments to the constant buzz of social media. The average day involves the experience of thousands of layers of design that reach to outside space but also reach deep into our bodies and brains. Even the planet itself has been completely encrusted by design as a geological layer. There is no longer an outside to the world of design. Design has become the world. Design is what makes the human. It is the very basis of social life. But design also engineers inequalities and new forms of neglect, such as lawlessness, poverty, and the climate at the same time as the human genome and the weather are being actively redesigned. We can no longer reassure ourselves with the idea of "good design." Design itself needs to be redesigned.

Book Synopsis'This is, I think, the best book on drawing animals I’ve seen. The sheer breadth of the coverage and the amount of detail that Tim goes into is breathtaking.' Henry Malt, Artbookreview.net 'Tim is a genius in every respect and this really could be the only book on animal drawing you'll ever need.' Paint Magazine Artist Tim Pond’s lively and engaging book fuses science with art, providing you with the skills, techniques and knowledge you need to create sketches of animals filled with life and movement. Tim shows you how to observe and draw animals in zoos, farms, wildlife parks and aquariums, teaching you some fascinating facts about the animals along the way and ultimately bringing you closer to nature. One of the challenges with sketching wildlife is that animals are constantly moving. However, having some basic understanding of biology can help you capture the form, movement and ultimately the spirit of the animal in question. This combination of scientific knowledge and practical guidance is key to creating lively drawings and Tim’s ability to convey this in an accessible and engaging way makes this a unique and inspiring guide.Trade ReviewThis is, without doubt, the best book on animal drawing I have ever seen. Not only are the results attractive and the very thing you'd want to be able to draw yourself, the comprehensive coverage and simple explanations are second to none. Simplicity is the key to Tim's approach, both in working and teaching. His creatures frequently stand alone, and never have more props or background than is absolutely necessary. That way, they leap off the page, both in monochrome and colour. As well as some neat 'widgets and gizmos' - simple shape-based ways of getting started - Tim also uses colour shading to handle the tricky subject of musculature and underlying structure. Finally, there's a way of getting to grips with this necessary topic. Subjects include birds, mammals, fish and crustaceans and there are sketches, studies and a variety of poses throughout. This book is always exciting, inspiring and thoroughly informative. * The Artist, June 2019 *This remarkable comprehensive guide will tell you all you need to know about drawing everything from amphibians to primates. If that sounds like an overwhelming and perhaps breathless task, Tim is completely at home with his subject and breaks it all down into manageable chunks. I particularly like his "widgets and gizmos" - little sidebars that contain tricks that include the use of geometric shapes, grids and outlines that get structure and proportion right first time and, above all, painlessly. This is a lot more than sleight of hand, though, and there's a lot of real science (as well as art) behind what suddenly seems easy. Tim uses shading to show how structure works beneath the skin - anatomical lessons suddenly become about art rather than anatomy. So far, I haven't mentioned the sheer quality of the work that Tim produces. While remaining faithfully accurate to shape and structure, there's a pleasant looseness to his style. It gives instant character and that sense of potential movement animals possess even at rest. Most of the illustrations don't have backgrounds but, where they do appear, they don't dominate and are always appropriate. The focus is always on the main subject, as it should be. Although the title might suggest that this is a pen and pencil book, there's plenty of colour and Tim shows you how to use watercolour to add shape, texture and tone to your outlines. I hope I've conveyed to you how much I love this. It's a visual feast that makes it impossible not to want to get started, even if you've never thought of drawing animals before. Even better, it fulfils its promise and takes you right through the process. Tim is a genius in every respect and this really could be the only book on animal drawing you'll ever need. * Paint magazine (March 2019) *In this practical guide to drawing and sketching animals, Tim Pond shows us how to observe animals in natural environments - from zoos and farms to wildlife parks and aquariums. To cope with animals' constant movement, Tim explains how a basic knowledge of biology can help you to capture the spirit of your subject as well as its form. Fascinating facts about animals are included along the way, making this a lively as well as inspiring guide to better sketching techniques. * Leisure Painter, April 2019 *This comprehensive guide to drawing animals will give you everything you need to know. Tim suggests ways of simplifying your approach to shape, form, structure and physical features so that you'll get perfect results every time. He calls these little tricks Widgets and Gizmos and they do seem to work like magic. In practice, they're just simple grids and block outlines that point you in the right direction before you can overthink the problem. You'll wonder why no-one's ever told you about them before! Every type of animal is here, from primates to ungulates and shellfish to amphibians. You've never wanted to draw a shrimp? Tim's approach is so enticing and encouraging that you'll be itching to do so the moment you see what's possible. Although thorough, Tim's approach is straightforward and never intimidating. In the anatomical diagrams, the differently coloured shading makes it easy to follow the structure that underlies the outward appearance of your subject. The whole book is a work of art that will have you producing your own in a very short time. * The SAA *'This is, I think, the best book on drawing animals I've seen. The sheer breadth of the coverage and the amount of detail that Tim goes into is breathtaking. More than that, though, it remains at all times completely accessible and you’re never left feeling bewildered by the amount of information on every page.' Read the full review here. -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *Tim Pond's Field Guide to Drawing & Sketching Animals is a keystone book for anyone wishing to draw animals that are both scientfically accurate and full of life. He does a deep dive into the anatomy and structure of animals but with a keen understanding of what the artist needs to see and understand. He has cut through irrelevant chatter to emphasise what you need to get the beast onto paper. His approach supports drawings that show the behaviour, mannerisms, and character, transforming a sketch from a generic diagram to an intimate portrait, the breadth of his examples, from sponges to gorillas is a celebration of the biodiversity of the Earth and an inspiration to naturalist-artists. * John Muir Laws *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6; The blank page 8; Study sheets 16; The sea, and life 20; Connections 22; Common features 24; Anatomical adaptation 32; Welcome to the animal kingdom 34; Sponges 36; Jellyfish 38; Corals 40; Cephalopods 42; Octopuses 44; Slugs and snails 46; Arthropods 48; Habitat: Coast 50; Shrimp 52; Insects 54; Praying mantises 58; Metamorphosis 60; Butterflies and moths 62; Monarch butterflies 64; Spiders and scorpions 66; Fish 68; Sharks 72; Boxfish 74; Symbiosis 76; Seahorses 78; Seadragons 80; Habitat: Coral reefs 82; Porcupine fish 84; Common goldfish 86; Amphibians and reptiles 88; Frogs and toads 90; Green iguanas 92; Crocodilians 94; Crocodiles 96; Tortoises, turtles and terrapins 98; Dinosaurs 100; Mammals 102; Red deer 104; Fallow deer 106; Red river hogs 108; Warthogs 110; Hippopotamuses 112; Giraffes 114; Pivot points 116; Malayan tapirs 118; Rhinoceroses 120; Zebras 122; Habitat: The farm 124; Elephants 126; Sloths 130; Cats 132; Jaguars 134; Cheetahs 136; Lions 138; Tigers 140; Habitat: Woodlands 142; African hunting dogs 144; Bears 148; South American coatis 150; Red kangaroos 152; Primates 154; Lemurs 156; Monkeys 158; Gorillas 160; Chimpanzees 162; Movement through water 164; Pinnipeds 166; Otters 168; Blue whales 170; Movement through air 172; Bats 174; Birds 176; Bird origins 178; Bird anatomy 180; Owls 184; Greater flamingos 188; Penguins 190; Index 192.
