Thames & Hudson Ltd Versailles from the Sky

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFor the first time ever, Thomas Garnier - official photographer of the Palace of Versailles - reveals a secret the chateau has harboured for centuries: its extraordinary beauty when seen from the air. Versailles seen from the sky is dreamlike. This remarkable vista was first experienced on 19 September 1783 by the passengers on board the world's first hot-air balloon flight: a sheep, a duck and a chicken. These animals rose up into the sky in front of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette, making Versailles a pioneering location in the conquest of the air. Now, in the 21st century, the advent of drone cameras makes it possible to soar into the air and capture an infinity of new perspectives. Everything is more beautiful when seen from above, and this is particularly true of Versailles. The view from the sky reveals the geometry of the different spaces and the genius of their creators, while also offering a panoramic view of the Estate in all its immensity. The classical gar

  • Barbara Hepworth

Thames & Hudson Ltd Barbara Hepworth

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe first biography to look at the entirety of Barbara Hepworth's multi-faceted artistic practice.Trade Review'Clayton’s book may be unusual in that she avoids the British biographical tradition of combining amateur psychoanalysis with elevated gossip. But it is perfect on its own terms, dissecting Hepworth’s thoughtful writing, the technicalities of her changing sculptural practice, the demands of motherhood and her ambition and seriousness. What emerges most powerfully from Clayton’s study is the importance of female friendships and loyalties in Hepworth’s life' - Literary Review'Clayton, drawing on a cache of unpublished letters that Hepworth wrote to a small group of her closest female friends, puts the other side of the story. The woman whom you will meet, rather than being the steely Stakhanovite of cliché, is also a mother in post-natal crisis, struggling to care alone for a trio of toddlers, agonising over which was the right course to take. The reader taps into her desperation as, confined to a dingy London flat with her newborns, she cries “for days on end”' - Rachel Campbell-Johnston, The Times'This biography’s value and novelty are level-headedness and fine-grained research. Clayton explains rather than exculpates, narrates rather than judges. She sets Hepworth talking through the pages, quoting generously from letters … The book’s illustrations (nearly 200 of them, mostly colour) bring together a lifetime’s vision …The pages glow and thrum with stringed bronze, humped wood and bored stone, with cool white plaster scooped and painted' - Guardian'Through both the book and exhibition we gain a sense of Hepworth as a strong, clear-headed figure moving back and forth within a set of influences: her beloved children, her lifelong faith as a Christian Scientist, romantic love, music, her interest in the spiritual realm and her fascination with materials and the natural world' - Hettie Judah, The i'Well-researched and richly illustrated… Having access to previously unavailable private correspondence, Clayton provides a fascinating account of Hepworth’s yearning to bridge the gap between her art and life by finding harmony, rhythm and balance within materials ... This book will vividly illuminate hitherto unknown aspects of her life and prolific art practice, and will be an inspiration to many' - FX Magazine'Wonderful illustrated biography' - Daily Mail'Thoughtful and enjoyable… The biography’s many excellent illustrations, aligned with relevant passages of text, have helped Clayton put together a comprehensive account of Barbara Hepworth’s talent and determination' - The Spectator'This biography – and the exhibition at The Hepworth Wakefield – extends throughout her career, shedding new light on her interests and relationships, and how the artist held conflicting ideas and forces, and made sense of them through her work' - Arts Society'This new book by The Hepworth Wakefield’s curator Eleanor Clayton reveals a multifaceted life informed by dance, music, poetry and theatre, as well as science and technology. Complete with in-depth sketchbook annotations, drawings, paintings and in-progress documentary footage, it fully brings the artist’s world to life' - Elephant'Eleanor Clayton is the author of this exemplary biography of the artist. With clarity, modesty, and skilled appreciation, she tells the story of Hepworth’s life and work in a way that can be equally enjoyed by specialist and general reader alike' - Lord Harries, Church Times'Anybody who likes her sculpture in bronze, wood and stone, and the life she found in them, will want to see this fully illustrated account of her work and to read her correspondence' - Mature Times'A fascinating and significant contribution to the existing body of Hepworth scholarship' - Art QuarterlyTable of ContentsForeword Introduction 1. Book SynopsisAntony Gormley occupies an unusual position as a highly popular sculptor known chiefly for his Angel of the North (1998), a national landmark in the UK who is also widely regarded as one of the most intellectually challenging artists working internationally. He is grounded in archaeology and anthropology, and looks to Asian and Buddhist traditions as much as to Western sculptural history, which he believes reached a punctuation point with Rodin. This is the first book to focus on Gormley's thoughts on sculpture, positioning his career and artistic philosophy in relation to its history. The book is structured thematically over four chapters: the first explores Gormley's thoughts on the body, time and space in relation to major works including European Field (1993) and Still Standing' (2011), Gormley's rehang of the classical rooms at the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. The second chapter, Sculptors', was first delivered as a series of five lectures for the BBC; in each, Gormley dis

Delving deep into the art and mind of one of the most exciting and original fashion photographers working today, Shoot for the Moon showcases the gamut of Walker's weird, wild Wonderlands. Thames & Hudson Ltd Francis Bacon Painting Philosophy Psychoanalysis

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe second in a series of books that seeks to illuminate Francis Bacon's art and motivations, and to open up fresh and stimulating ways of understanding his paintings. Francis Bacon is one of the most important artists of the 20th century. His works continue to puzzle and unnerve viewers, raising complex questions about their meaning. Over recent decades, two theoretical approaches to Bacon's work have come to hold sway: firstly, that Bacon is an existentialist painter, depicting an absurd and godless world; and secondly, that he is an anti-representational painter, whose primary aim is to bring his work directly onto the spectator's nervous system'. Francis Bacon: Painting, Philosophy, Psychoanalysis brings together some of today's leading philosophers and psychoanalytic critics to go beyond established readings of Bacon and to open up radically new ways of thinking about his art. The essays bring Bacon into dialogue with figures such as Aristotle, Hegel, Freud, Lacan, Adorno and Heidegger, as well as situating his work in the broader contexts of modernism and modernity. The result is a timely and thought-provoking collection that will be essential reading for anyone interested in Bacon, modern art and contemporary aesthetics.

Standards Manual QSL Do You Confirm Receipt of My Transmission

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisCommunications between amateur radio (AKA ham radio) operators and citizen band stations have been crowding the world's electromagnetic spectrum since its invention in the early 20th century. Millions of operators formed what could be almost be described as an early internet projecting their voices, ideas, and humanity around the earth's surface using various techniques and frequencies to bounce their waves around the earth's surface, off of the ionosphere, and even the moon. Any communication network needs a way of identifying individuals. A QSL card is a written confirmation of prior communication between two amateur radio or citizens band stationspostcard sized and mailed between users. Do You Confirm Receipt of My Transmission is derived from the Q code. A Q code message can stand for a statement or a question (when the code is followed by a question mark). In this case, QSL?' (note the question mark) means Do you confirm receipt of my transmission? while QSL' (without a question mark) means I confirm receipt of your transmission. Just like today's internet avatars, operators had their own style and often projected their personality using their QSL cards. Collecting cards was popular, and a source of pride to operators. Published by Brooklyn-based design imprint, Standards Manual, Do You Confirm Receipt of My Transmission is a visual history of these cards, spanning from approximately 19601990. Over 190 cards are included, front and back, with high resolution details. The collection forms a visual history of early global communication something we now take for granted but was once a marvel. Today, there are over 3 million licensed radio operators worldwide.

Book SynopsisThe BM is the greatest treasure house in the world and it could fill many books with pretty pictures ... but this is more than that. A choice selection of topics, some well known and obvious (Sutton Hoo, the Royal Cemeteries at Ur, the Elgin Marbles), others less obvious (the Folkton Drums, the Lothar Crystal), fifty in all, serve as the basis for description and discussion of both objects and collectors and the way in which the BM has acquired them. This unusual and interesting approach makes for a magnificent book: superb pictures, highly readable descriptions and lots of human interest anecdotes. The 2009 edition is significantly expanded with twelve new objects discussed, representing a refocusing away from Europe and the Near East and also showcasing artefacts, such as the Ringlemere Cup, acquired over the last few decades. `About as good as a book of this sort can be. A magnificent present ... if you can bear to part with it.''Table of Contents1. Forward, Introduction; 2. Treasure; 3. Civilisations rediscovered; 4. Sculpture; 5. Aspects of the Divine; 6. Book SynopsisMore than a footnote to the Second World War, or a foreword to the youth-obsessed exhilaration of the Sixties, the Fifties was a thrilling decade devoted to newness and freshness. The British people, rebuilding their lives and wardrobes, demanded modern materials, vibrant patterns and exciting prints inspired by scientific discoveries and modern art. Despite the influence of glamorous Paris couture led by Dior, home-grown fashion labels including Horrockses and the young Queen Elizabeth's couturier Norman Hartnell had an equally great, if not greater impact on British style. This book, written by an assistant curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum, is a fascinating look back to the days when post-war Britain developed a fresh sense of style.Table of ContentsIntroduction: The End of Rationing Everyday Fashion: Work and Pleasure Hats: Crowning Glory Formal Wear: Going to the Ball Underwear: Things Seen and Unseen Menswear: Genesis of the Peacock Epilogue: Slipping into the Sixties Further Reading Places to Visit Index
