Oxford University Press Inc The Voice of Virtue

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Voice of Virtue illuminates the musical practices at the heart of the Neostoic movement that spread across French lands during the Wars of Religion in the latter half of the sixteenth century. Guided by twin reparative traditions granting music and philosophy therapeutic power, composers and performers across the embattled Catholic and Protestant confessions turned to moral song as a means of repairing personal and collective virtue damaged by the ongoing conflict. Moral song collections enlarged interest in Stoic philosophy by circulating its ethical program to a broader audience through attractive paraphrases of Stoic maxims set to music. Even more importantly, this skillfully composed repertoire of polyphonic song offered a multi-sensory moral practice that would have resonated powerfully for those well-versed in the paradoxes of the Stoic tradition. Bringing together a repertoire of little-known music prints, a rich visual culture, and an impressive body of literary and philosoTrade ReviewThis vividly-written and strikingly original study shows how song could act as a crucial tool for individual and collective moral repair at a time when France was riven by war and religious dispute. Through a meticulously researched exploration of Stoic currents in musical culture, Latour convincingly argues that moral song became a significant mode of informal philosophy as early modern French people sought to live well, to cultivate virtue, and to face adversity. * Jeanice Brooks, Professor of Music, University of Southampton *The Voice of Virtue is a superb study of the French poetry and music that Melinda Latour aptly calls 'singing Stoicism.' With impeccable scholarship and infectious enthusiasm, she illuminates an unfamiliar and remarkable phase of Neostoic thought * A.A. Long, Professor Emeritus of Classics at the University of California, Berkeley, and author of Hellenistic Philosophy and Stoic Studies *Can music make us better people? In this fascinating and groundbreaking book, Melinda Latour demonstrates how the understudied genre of moral song in the late French Renaissance created a distinctive Stoic sonic world to repair religious conflict and civil strife. The Voice of Virtue makes important links between late Renaissance moral philosophy, devotional poetry, painting, and musical expression. With its wide range of musical illustrations and online links it enables us to appreciate for the first time the intimate beauty of a body of music that has so often been overlooked, and to understand its serious purpose. * Mark Greengrass, Centre Roland Mousnier, Sorbonne Université *Table of ContentsList of Tables, Figures, and Examples List of Web Examples Preface Introduction Chapter 1: Neostoic Remedies Chapter 2: Imprinting Virtue Chapter 3: The Exercise of Harmony Chapter 4: Musical Paradoxes Chapter 5: Sensing Beauty Chapter 6: Sound Judgment Chapter 7: Moral Ordering Chapter 8: Rehearsing Death Conclusion: Suspensions of Desire Appendix Select Bibliography

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisSonata form is the most commonly encountered organizational plan in the works of the classical-music masters, from Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven to Schubert, Brahms, and beyond. Sonata Theory, an analytic approach developed by James Hepokoski and Warren Darcy in their award-winning Elements of Sonata Theory (2006), has emerged as one of the most influential frameworks for understanding this musical structure. What can this method from the new Formenlehre teach us about how these composers put together their most iconic pieces and to what expressive ends?In this new Sonata Theory Handbook, Hepokoski introduces readers step-by-step to the main ideas of this approach. At the heart of the book are close readings of eight individual movements from Mozart''s Piano Sonata in B-flat, K. 333, to such structurally complex pieces as Schubert''s Death and the Maiden String Quartet and the finale of Brahms''s Symphony No 1 that show this analytical method in action. These illustrative analyses areTrade ReviewAn excellent addition and deepening of the standard work from 2006 * Stefan Keym, Die Musikforschung *The analyses are consistently subtle and convincing ... A Sonata Theory Handbook will get a lot of use. Incidentally, Hepokoski and Darcy's indexing scheme -- segregation by names, works, and concepts -- remains the best method ever devised. * B. J. Murray, CHOICE *Highly Recommended. * CHOICE *Much more than simply a how-to guide, this handbook vividly presents and clarifies the concepts of Sonata Theory through a series of penetrating analyses, inviting its readers to share in the exciting interpretive possibilities offered by this landmark approach. * L. Poundie Burstein, author of Journeys through Galant Expositions *This book is so much more than a companion piece to the influential Elements of Sonata Theory — it is an invitation to listen to some old favorites from Mozart to Brahms with fresh ears. Each page is brimming with compelling detail and vivid prose. • Hypermetric Manipulations in Haydn and Mozart

Oxford University Press Inc Hypermetric Manipulations in Haydn and Mozart

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisFor the past four decades, the concept of hypermeter has been routinely applied to eighteenth-century music. But was this concept familiar in the eighteenth century? If so, how is it reflected in writings of eighteenth-century music theorists? And how does it relate to their discussion of phrase structure? In this book, a follow-up to the award-winning Metric Manipulations in Haydn and Mozart, author Danuta Mirka unearthes a number of cues that point to eighteenth-century recognition of what today is called hypermeter, and retraces the line of tradition that led from eighteenth-century music theory to the emergence of the modern concept of hypermeter in the twentieth century. Mirka describes the proto-theory of hypermeter developed by German music theorists, recounts the recent history of this concept in American music theory, evaluates contributions made to it by authors working within different theoretical traditions, and introduces a dynamic model of hypermeter which allows the analyst to trace the effect of hypermetric manipulations in real time. This model is applied in analyses of Haydn''s and Mozart''s chamber music for strings, which shed a new light upon this celebrated repertoire, but the aim of this book goes far beyond an analytical survey of specific compositions. Rather, it is to offer a systematic classification of hypermetrical irregularities in relation to phrase structure and to give a comprehensive account of the ways in which phrase structure and hypermeter were described by eighteenth-century music theorists, conceived by eighteenth-century composers, and perceived by eighteenth-century listeners.Trade ReviewWhat makes the book so compelling is how Mirka synthesizes four decades of music-theoretical research on rhythm and metre and deftly weaves in insights from topic theory, schema theory, historical music theory and music cognition. The result is an impressive set of new theoretical tools for eighteenth-century music that pertain not only to hypermetre but also to the analysis of melody, rhythm and small-scale forms. * Roger Mathew Grant, Eighteenth-Century Music *fascinating book * W.E. Grim, CHOICE Connect, Vol. 59 No. 8 *In its brilliant synthesis of historical music theories, current theoretical and cognitive research, and detailed analyses, this book sets the standard for future discussions of rhythmic structure in music of the Classical style. * Fred Lerdahl, Fritz Reiner Professor Emeritus of Musical Composition, Columbia University *With the rigor characteristic of Metric Manipulations, Mirka now expertly weaves together historical and contemporary approaches to hypermetric manipulations, grounding rhythmic theory and eighteenth-century style and form in listener experience. * Leigh VanHandel, Associate Professor of Music Theory, University of British Columbia *This book represents music theory scholarship at its very best. It sets new standards for how musicians can employ sophisticated historical concepts in a comprehensive and creative fashion, as it shares exciting insights into some of the most beloved works from the Classical repertoire. * L. Book SynopsisCritical citizenship practices and the language of today''s populism have never been more sharply opposed. Today''s insistent efforts to anchor citizenship narratives in national belonging now confront a variety of ''flexible'' or ''differentiated'' citizenships - plural, performative, and decentered practices of rights claiming mutually defining ''the political'', its subjects, and its others on a variety of scales. They confront, too, critiques of citizenship in totalitarian or neoliberal governmentality that derive from Foucault, Agamben, and Arendt and have become pressing today in proliferating states of emergency and exception and the growing ranks of non-citizens.How should these debates be configured now? And what place does music have in them? In Music and Citizenship, author Martin Stokes argues that music has for a long time been entangled with debates about citizenship and citizenly identities, though for various reasons this entanglement has been insufficiently recognized.Trade ReviewMartin Stokes urges us to regard citizenship as a fundamentally contested concept, whose diverse articulations are variously felt, signified, enacted, and mediated through musical practice. By surveying a wide range of theoretical perspectives, and through contemporary case studies that weave between bicycles, football crowds, and city parks, Stokes offers a landmark statement of pressing relevance to anyone concerned with music's social roles. * Robert Adlington, author of Musical Models of Democracy *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Chapter 1. • Shostakovichs Symphony No. 5

Oxford University Press Inc Shostakovichs Symphony No. 5

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe book is devoted to Shostakovich''s most controversial symphony, composed at the height of Stalin''s Purges. It rescued Shostakovich from official disfavour and deeply moved audiences. The critics recognized it as a masterpiece, but they were perplexed by its ambiguities, especially at the end of the Symphony: some imagined it as the joyful final victory of socialism, while others heard the triumph instead of a sinister and oppressive force. The second interpretation was pushed into the background, but the controversy persisted, with the further complication of two very different tempo markings for the closing section, both of which seemed to be approved by the composer. The authors give an authoritative account of the tempo controversy and the effect of the different tempos on the reception of the work in the West. Shostakovich''s Symphony No. 5 delves into the history of the work''s composition, the pressures Shostakovich experienced at the time, and the cultural environment from the time the composer began work on Symphony through to the settling of its official critical reception. At the center of this exploration is the musical score itself, which is full of secrets that have taken decades to uncover, the most colorful of which is the case for Shostakovich''s extensive references to Bizet''s Carmen, and the connection between these and Shostakovich''s lover of the mid-30s, Lala Carmen (Elena Konstantinovskaya). The authors show how Shostakovich largely (but not entirely) set aside his influences from Mahler and German modernists, and in replacement absorbed Beethoven and Tchaikovsky with the same ingenuity as his previous influences. Shostakovich decided to make a virtue of a necessity, and created one of the richest of symphonic scores, allowing himself to retain his artistic pride while winning the official approval necessary for regaining his livelihood. These events all unfolded in the atmosphere of terror created by Stalin''s Great Purge. This book is the first to be devoted to this watershed symphony, and includes secrets of the score that took decades to uncover.

Book SynopsisA Performer''s Guide to Transcribing, Editing, and Arranging Early Music provides instruction on three important tasks that early music performers often undertake in order to make their work more noticeable and appealing to their audiences. First, the book provides instruction on using early sources-manuscripts, prints, and treatises-in score, parts, or tablature. It then illuminates priorities behind basic editorial decisions-determining what constitutes a version of a musical piece, how to choose a version, and how to choose the source for that version. Lastly, the book offers advice about arranging both early and new music for early instruments, including how to consider instruments'' ranges and various registers, how to exploit the unique characteristics of period instruments, and how to produce convincing textures of accompaniment. • Poetics of Handels Operas

Oxford University Press Inc Poetics of Handels Operas

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisWhat should we consider when thinking about the relationship between an onstage performance and the story the performance tells? A Poetics of Handel''s Operas explores this question by analyzing the narratives of Handel''s operas in relation to the rich representational fabric of performance used to convey them. Nathan Link notes that in most storytelling genres, the audience can naturally discern between a story and the way that story is represented: with film, for example, the viewer would recognize that a character hears neither her own voiceover nor the ambient music that accompanies it, whereas in discussions of opera, some audiences may be distracted by the seemingly artificial nature of such conventions as characters singing their dialogue. Link proposes that when engaging with opera, distinguishing between the performance we see and hear on the stage and the story represented offers a meaningful approach to engaging with and interpreting the work.Handel''s operas are today the most-performed works in the Baroque opera seria tradition. This genre, with its intricate dramaturgy and esoteric conventions, stands to gain much from an investigation into the relationships between the onstage performance and the story to which that performance directs us. In his analysis, Link offers theoretical studies on opera and narratological theories of literature, drama, and film, providing rich engagement with Handel''s work and what it conveys about the relationship between text, story, and performance.Trade ReviewThe chapter headings of Link's intriguingly titled Poetics of Handel's Operas hint at the nature of this extraordinary volume: Song, Time, Orchestra, Character, and Storytelling. Taking full advantage of all we have learned about Handel's operas over the past half-century, from the likes of Winton Dean et al, Link goes beyond facts and figures to focus, not on the what, but on the how, and not from the point of view of the composer alone but from his relationship with his audience-on the expressive contract established between them. By engaging a variety of critical strategies drawn from literary, film, and dramatic theory, Link brilliantly illuminates Handel's storytelling in ways that can be applied to operas of any period, including our own. * Ellen Rosand, author of Opera in Seventeenth-Century Venice: The Creation of a Genre *The Poetics of Handel's Operas offers a wholly new analytic system based on narrative storytelling that will surely have a strong impact on Handel scholarship - and also has the potential to mark a turning point in the study and performance of opera seria. Book SynopsisTrade ReviewThere is a widespread feeling among music lovers today that 'Bach is a good friend of mine,' and that if he were alive in this era, he would surely be an 'ultra-modern' person who was good at Facebook and Twitter—after all, his music appeals so much to us! I find Michael Marissen's new book discussing Bach, rather, in opposition to modernity to be a wonderful model of historically-informed analytic criticism, not only against 'modernism,' but also against the current easy-going commercialism and triumphalistic secularism that prevent us from truly deepening our understanding and enjoyment of Bach. Wholeheartedly welcome! * Masaaki Suzuki, music director of Bach Collegium Japan *This is a thought-provoking, incisive, and hugely enlightening collection of essays from one of the most respected and original thinkers in Bach studies today. Marissen's razor-sharp wit and crystal-clear prose cut through some of the enduring myths of modern Bach reception to reveal different, unexpected, and sometimes uncomfortable facets of the man and his music. * Bettina Varwig, University of Cambridge *Table of ContentsPreface Credits Part I - Constraints of History on Interpretation 1. Book SynopsisAlfonso X (1221-84) ruled over the Crown of Castile from 1252 until his death. Known as the Wise, he oversaw the production of a wealth of literature in his scriptorium. One of the most impressive of these literary outputs is the collection of songs known as the Cantigas de Santa Maria, which by most counts comprises 429 songs preserved in four manuscripts. The miracle songs (or cantigas de miragre) form the focus of this book. While the Cantigas have been the subject of much scholarly attention, only a handful of studies have looked at the repertory through an interdisciplinary lens. Fewer still have probed how the Cantigas use the power of song as a communicative medium, one that functions as a social tool within the erudite environment of the Alfonsine court. This book offers a new perspective to the song collection, probing how the Cantigas use their music and text, together with rhetorical devices, to communicate with their desired audience. Author Henry T. Drummond builds upon previous methodologies, adopting a novel and holistic assessment of the songs'' melodies, poetic features, and narrative logic to assess a wide selection of songs. He presents a nuanced understanding of a song form that effectively conveys its narratives to its listeners via a diverse combination of tools, embracing medieval rhetoric, rhyme-based play, and song''s inherent ludic potential. Such devices, Drummond argues, allow for the Cantigas to loom large as propaganda pieces, designed to dignify Alfonso X through an elaborately devised courtly ritual.

Book SynopsisSince the 1990s, migrant musicians have become increasingly prominent in New York City''s jazz scene. Challenging norms about who can be a jazz musician and what immigrant music should sound like, these musicians create mobile and diverse notions of jazz while inadvertently contributing to processes of gentrification and cultural institutionalization. In Jazz Migrations, author Ofer Gazit discusses the impact of contemporary transnational migration on New York jazz, examining its effects on educational institutions, club scenes, and jam sessions. Drawing on four years of musical participation in the scene, as well as interviews with musicians, audience members, venue owners, industry professionals, and institutional actors, Gazit transports readers from music schools in Japan, Israel, and India to rehearsals and private lessons in American jazz programs, and to New York''s immigrant jazz hangouts: an immigrant-owned music school in the Bronx; a weekly jam session in a Haitian bar in central Brooklyn; a Colombian-owned jazz room in Jackson Heights, Queens; and a members-only club in Manhattan. Along the way, he introduces the improvisatory practices of a cast of well-known and aspiring musicians: a South Indian guitarist''s visions of John Coltrane and Carnatic music; a Chilean saxophonist''s intimate dialogue with the sound of Sonny Rollins; an Israeli clarinetist finding a home in Brazilian Choro and in Louis Armstrong''s legacy; and a multiple Grammy-nominated Cuban drummer from the Bronx. Jazz Migrations concludes with a call for a collective reconsideration of the meaning of genre boundaries, senses of belonging, and ethnic identity in American music.

Book SynopsisFor centuries of European history, singing for a person at the moment of death was considered to be the ideal accompaniment to a life''s ending. In Music in Medieval Rituals for the End of Life, author Elaine Stratton Hild examines and recovers the chants sung for the dying during the Middle Ages, beginning in the late eighth century. Along with the first editions of these melodies, she offers considerations of the functions that music played within the deathbed rituals, arguing that the chants served as vehicles with which communities offered comfort to a dying person. The book presents close readings of rituals from diverse communities, each as they appear in a single source. The rituals'' chants are transcribed into modern notation and analyzed, both for their text-music relationships and for their functions within the rituals. Hild shows that within the widespread practice, local versions of the liturgies--along with their chant repertories--remained unstandardized throughout the Mi

Book SynopsisContemporary popular musics such as hip hop, techno, grime, EDM, drill, house and so on are among the most listened to in the world and yet, typically, they are barely covered in the music classroom if at all. This needs to be better reflected in educational, cultural, and social terms. In wider society, these musics are often treated as if they are the causative for the social dysfunction that, in fact, they merely reflect. At the same time, projects, programmes and practices of such contemporary popular musics can and have supported wellness and healing. Editors Pete Dale, Pamela Burnard, and Raphael Travis Jr. argue that there is huge potential here for enhanced inclusion. Music for Inclusion and Healing in Schools and Beyond explains that when this music is included in the school curriculum or utilised in therapeutic contexts, huge leaps in healing and wellness can be achieved, as well as educational attainment and enjoyment in school contexts. This unique book seeks to account for those positive impacts, theorise them and help to extend and advance their impact. Contributing authors invite readers to re-think the possibilities and potentials for contemporary popular musics to gain the prestige that their actual popularity would suggest they should already command. The various contributors of this book are from diverse ethnic, social and academic backgrounds, and this title includes several chapters from practitioners who have not written about the work they do before now. Readers will learn not only about the impact of projects that utilize such music but also ideas about how that impact can best be measured.Table of ContentsForeword Introduction List of Contributors Glossary Part One: Curriculum and Music Education 1. • The Songs of Aristophanes

Clarendon Press The Songs of Aristophanes

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisA comedy of Aristophanes was in large measure a musical performance, and his lyric verse covers a wide range of styles - from popular song to parody of tragedy. The music is lost, and our only way of recovering something of the experience of an Athenian audience is by studying the rhythms of the poetry. This book provides a full text, with scansions, of the lyric of the surviving plays, and an introduction to the different rhythms used by Aristophanes, their origins, and literary associations. Dr Parker pays particular attention to showing the role played by lyric metre in the structure of the plays and to distinguishing the different levels of musical style, thus illustrating the integral part metre plays in Aristophanes'' dramatic art and satire. She also discusses fully the metrical aspects of textual problems in Aristophanes'' lyric, and a section of the introduction traces the evolution of the study of Aristophanes'' metres and the influence this has on the text.Trade ReviewA major addition to the specialist literature on the author ... There is an enormous amount of scrupulous, carefully pondered scholarship here, used to highlight both large scale features ... and the rhythmic effects of particular passages ... Parker's work represents a superb achievement; it will be indispensable to all who want to pick the finer threads in the fabric of Aristophanic comedy. * Greece & Rome *This book testifies to extraordinary scholarly zeal, offering an abundance of detailed analyses, observations and readings of all lyric passages in Aristophanes' complete works ... the book provides a good insight into the metrical techniques employed in the comedies of this period ... By giving the book a clear structure and by offering a comprehensive study of Aristophanes' poetry and to some extent of the entire Attic poetry of the time, Parket has successfully provided us with another commendable basis for research. * Christoph Kugelmeier, Bryn Mawr Classical Review *The explanatory text is highly readable because of its refreshingly low amount of footnotes. Important quotations and bibliographical references are integrated into the text, giving the impression of a lively discussion ... Parker incorporates her scholarly knowledge into the discussion and evaluates opposing views only where absolutely vital. She offers sensitive observations and readings without ever exceeding the self-imposed limits. * Christoph Kugelmeier, Bryn Mawr Classical Review *

Book SynopsisAlthough we are acquainted with the music of J. S. Bach through countless performances and recordings, the composer himself continues to come across as the somewhat enigmatic figure depicted in a single, familiar portrait. Published in 2000 to mark the 250th anniversary of Bach''s death, author and leading Bach scholar Christoph Wolff presents a new picture that brings to life this towering figure of the Baroque era. Now available in paperback, this engaging biography portrays Bach as the living, breathing--and sometimes imperfect--human being that he was, while bringing to bear all the advances gained in the last half-century of Bach scholarship. Wolff demonstrates the intimate connection between the composer''s life and his music, showing how Bach''s superb inventiveness pervaded his career as a musician, composer, performer, scholar, and teacher. And throughout, we see Bach in the broader context of his time: its institutions, traditions, and influences. With this highly readable boTrade Revieweminently readable, at times even colloquial. Wolff is one of the foremost Bach scholars today, and his comprehensive knowledge of the source materials equips him admirably to write such a book ... all sorts of interesting details emerge. * John Kitchen, Early Music Today, Oct.-Nov. 2000 *Drawing on a lifetime's involvement with Bach's music, Professor Wolff has written what is undoubtedly the most authorative and up-to-date survey of the composer's life and works in English, and probably in any language. * Malcolm Boyd, The Gramophone *Musical biographies don't come much better than this ... no-one seriously interested in Bach should pass it by. * Bettina Neumann, Piano, July-Aug 2000 *this is a learned and satisfying account of Bach's work, temperament and milieu which will disappoint neither specialist nor general music lover. * Nicholas Anderson, BBC Music Magazine *Table of ContentsLIST OF ILLUSTRATIONS; PREFACE; PROLOGUE: BACH AND THE NOTION OF "MUSICAL SCIENCE"; EPILOGUE: BACH AND THE IDEA OF "MUSICAL PERFECTION"; NOTES; MUSIC EXAMPLES; 1. Book SynopsisHow do the arts give us pleasure? Covering a very wide range of artistic works, from Auden to David Lynch, Rembrandt to Edward Weston, and Richard Strauss to Keith Jarrett, Pleasure and the Arts offers us an explanation of our enjoyable emotional engagements with literature, music, and painting. The arts direct us to intimate and particularized relationships - with the people represented in the works, or with those we imagine produced them. When we listen to music or look at a purely abstract painting, or when we drink a glass of wine, can we enjoy the experience without verbalizing our response? Do our interpretative assumptions, our awareness of technique, and our attitudes to fantasy, get in the way of our appreciation of art, or enhance it? As the book examines these questions and more, we discover how curiosity drives us to enjoy narratives, ordinary jokes, metaphors, and modernist epiphanies, and how narrative in all the arts can order and provoke intense enjoyment. Book SynopsisFrom Modes to Keys in Early Modern Music Theory addresses one of the broadest and most elusive open topics in music history: the transition from the Renaissance modes to the major and minor keys of the high Baroque. The system Glarean proposed in his 1547 Dodecachordon comprised twelve modes at two transposition levels; the scheme J.S. Bach used to order The Well-Tempered Clavier in 1722 featured two modes at twelve transposition levels. What took place in between?Through deep engagement with the corpus of Western music theory, author Michael R. Dodds presents a model to clarify the factors of this complex shift. The essence of this model lies in the dynamic interplay of three historical-conceptual layers arising successively in the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Baroque, each layer continuing once introduced. Medieval theorists conceptualized mode along a continuum between tune and scale. Renaissance theorists extended mode from plainchant to polyphony, applying modal theory to such feTrade ReviewMichael Dodds offers an ambitious and wide-ranging account of one of the most vexing problems in the history of Western music, the shift from mode to key. Dodds brings unparalleled knowledge of musical repertories and theoretical thought to illuminate pivotal moments. Disentangling diverse strands of thought he offers a three-fold model to explain change based on the dynamic interplay among three historical-conceptual layers. From Modes to Keys becomes the starting point for all future investigations of mode. * Jessie Ann Owens, Distinguished Professor of Music Emeritus, UC Davis *The historical path leading from modality to tonality has long been a confounding and contentious subject for musicologists. In his brilliant new study, Michael Dodds may well have written the definitive account of this epic story. We learn how the familiar major and minor key system emerged not through any direct evolution from the set of eight Ecclesiastical modes, rather through a radically new theoretical conception of tonal space catalyzed by the introduction of keyboard instruments in the church service. Book SynopsisIn late eighteenth-century Vienna and the Habsburg territories, over 50 minor-key symphonies were written. Their distinctive stormy character, nervous energy and intense pathos make them a unique phenomenon.Trade Review"[R]eaders should be grateful for this groundbreaking contribution to our understanding of an era characterized by non-uniform stylistic heterogeneity and change. Riley opens up an important repertoire that has heretofore lacked a coherent theoretical treatment. In the process, he presents a plausible set of compositional options within the constraints of his proposed subgenre, in which rhetorical strategies may be interpreted as helping create marked expressive effects."--Music Theory Online "Riley has prompted a rethinking of our knowledge of the use of minor keys in the Classical era, and that is high praise indeed considering how much time scholars have invested in these works already...The fact that Riley was able to find all of these works and digest them in a meaningful way is impressive in its own right. Read Riley's first chapter; if you are still skeptical of his argument, read the rest of the book and watch as his preponderance of evidence piles upon you."--Fontes artis musicaeTable of ContentsAcknowledgements ; Tables, figures and music examples ; 1 The Viennese minor-key symphony ; 2 Imperial court composers: Wagenseil, Gassmann, Ordonez ; 3 Va?hal to 1771: five first movements ; 4.
