  • Taylor & Francis Ltd The Music in the Data

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisPutting forward an extensive new argument for a humanities-based approach to big-data analysis, The Music in the Data shows how large datasets of music, or music corpora, can be productively integrated with the qualitative questions at the heart of music research. The author argues that as well as providing objective evidence, music corpora can themselves be treated as texts to be subjectively read and creatively interpreted, allowing new levels of understanding and insight into music traditions. Each chapter in this book asks how we define a core music-theory topic, such as style, harmony, meter, function, and musical key, and then approaches the topic through considering trends within large musical datasets, applying a combination of quantitative analysis and qualitative interpretation. Throughout, several basic techniques of data analysis are introduced and explained, with supporting materials available online. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book demonstrates the processes of intercultural musical collaboration and how these processes contribute to facilitating positive relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Australia. Each of the chapters in this edited collection examines specific examples in diverse contexts, and reflects on key issues that underpin musical exchanges, including the benefits and challenges of intercultural music making. The collection demonstrates how these musical collaborations allow Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to work together, to learn from each other, and to improve and strengthen their relationships. The metaphor of the âœthird spaceâ of intercultural music making is interwoven in different ways throughout this volume. While focusing on Indigenous Australian/non-Indigenous intercultural musical collaboration, the book will be of interest globally as a resource for scholars and postgraduate students exploring intercultural musical communication in countries w

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book presents the first study of music in convent life in a single Hispanic city, Barcelona, during the early modern era. Exploring how convents were involved in the musical networks operating in sixteenth-century Barcelona, it challenges the invisibility of women in music history and reveals the intrinsic role played by nuns and lay women in the city's urban musical culture.Drawing on a wide range of archival sources, this innovative study offers a cross-disciplinary approach that not only reveals details of the rich musical life in Barcelona's nunneries, but shows how they took part in wider national and transnational networks of musical distribution, including religious, commercial, and social dimensions of music. The connections of Barcelona convents to networks for the dissemination of music in and outside the city provide a rich example of the close relationship between musical networks, urban society, and popular culture.Addressing how music was understood Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisMusic and Temple Ritual in South India: Performing for Siva documents the musical practices of the periya me?am, a South Indian instrumental ensemble of professional musicians who perform during the rituals and festivals of high-caste (Brahmanical) Tamil Hindu temples dedicated to the Pan-Indian god Siva an important patron of music since at least the tenth century. It explores the ways in which music and ritual are mutually constitutive, illuminating the cultural logics whereby performing and listening are integral to the kinetic, sensory and affective experiences that enable, shape and stimulate ritual communication in present-day devotional Hinduism. More than a rich and vivid ethnographic description of a local tradition, the book also develops a comprehensive and original analytical model, in which music is understood as both a situated and creative activity, and where the fluid relationship between humans and non-humans, in this case divine beings, is truly taTable of ContentsList of IllustrationsList of Audio ExamplesPreface1 Introduction2 Temple Ritual and Image Worship3 Musicians, from Past to Present4 The Repertoire5 Sound, Space and Divine Images6 Musical Time vs. Ritual Time7 Music, Emotion and Devotion8 ConclusionGlossaryBibliography

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisAt a time of transformation in the music history classroom and amid increasing calls to teach a global music history, Navigating Stylistic Boundaries in the Music History Classroom adds nuance to the teaching of varied musical traditions by examining the places where they intersect and the issues of musical exchange and appropriation that these intersections raise. Troubling traditional boundaries of genre and style, this collection of essays helps instructors to denaturalize the framework of Western art music and invite students to engage with other traditionsvernacular, popular, and non-Westernon their own terms. The book draws together contributions by a wide range of active scholars and educators to investigate the teaching of music history around cases of stylistic borders, exploring the places where different practices of music and values intersect. Book SynopsisThis book establishes the cultural background to the productions of Milton's Comus that were staged in the 1740s by Baptist Noel, 4th Earl of Gainsborough, at Exton Hall, his country seat in the East Midlands of England. The author reveals that Handel's visit in 1745 occurred in a richer and fuller context of cultural interests among the Noel family. Most of the music at Exton was selected from existing works by Handel, but the four movements of the finale were new, written by the composer specifically for the occasion. The study is based on receipted bills and other documents in an archival collection of Noel family papers that provide evidence of the Earl's purchase of books and music and of the musical and theatrical activities undertaken on his Exton estate. The author discusses the Earl's interests in music, books and theatre, indicating a belief in performance as a valuable and enjoyable experience and as a vehicle for the education of the yoTable of ContentsIntroduction 1. • Taylor & Francis Music Theory in the Safavid Era

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Safavid era (1501â1722) is one of the most important in the history of Persian culture, celebrated especially for its architecture and art, including miniature paintings that frequently represent singers and instrumentalists. Their presence reflects a sophisticated tradition of music making that was an integral part of court life, yet it is one that remains little known, for the musicological literature of the period is rather thin. There is, however, a significant exception: the text presented and analysed here, a hitherto unpublished and anonymous theoretical work probably of the middle of the sixteenth century. With a Sufi background inspiring the use of the nay as a tool of theoretical demonstration, it is exceptional in presenting descriptive accounts of the modes then in use and suggesting how these might be arranged in complex sequences. As it also gives an account of the corpus of rhythmic cycles it provides a unique insight into the basic structures of art-music during the first century of Safavid rule. Table of Contents1. • Taylor & Francis Ltd Musicality in Theatre

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisAs the complicated relationship between music and theatre has evolved and changed in the modern and postmodern periods, music has continued to be immensely influential in key developments of theatrical practices. In this study of musicality in the theatre, David Roesner offers a revised view of the nature of the relationship. The new perspective results from two shifts in focus: on the one hand, Roesner concentrates in particular on theatre-making - that is the creation processes of theatre - and on the other, he traces a notion of musicality' in the historical and contemporary discourses as driver of theatrical innovation and aesthetic dispositif, focusing on musical qualities, metaphors and principles derived from a wide range of genres.Roesner looks in particular at the ways in which those who attempted to experiment with, advance or even revolutionize theatre often sought to use and integrate a sense of musicality in training and directing processes and in performances. HTrade Review‘This is the first book to chart the history of the musicalization of theatre comprehensively in relation to writers, directors, scenographers, and performers, and it does so with great clarity and authority. … this book will secure a lasting place not only as a stimulating counter-history of twentieth-century theatre, but also as provocation to rethink the ontology of theatre itself, and the meaning of musicality.’Music and Letters‘Musicality in Theatre will serve as an important source for future studies in musical-theatrical intermediality…’Contemporary Theatre ReviewTable of ContentsContents: Introduction: premises and promises; Appia - musicality and the ‘inner essence’; Meyerhold - theatre ‘organized according to the music’s laws; Artaud - the musicality of sound, voice and noise; Writing with your ears - the musicality of playwriting; Theatre and jazz; The eclectic musicality of now; Conclusion: paradoxes of musicality; Bibliography; Index.

  • Taylor & Francis Ltd Nicolas Medtner

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisNicholas Medtner (1880-1951) has always been a neglected figure in the history of Russian music, and yet his friend Rachmaninoff considered him the greatest of contemporary composers. He wrote three fine piano concertos, more than one hundred solo piano compositions, including a cycle of fourteen sonatas fully worthy to be set alongside those of Scriabin and Prokofiev, and many beautiful songs. He was also a great pianist. Leaving Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution, Medtner lived for a time in Germany and France before finally settling in London, where he passed the final sixteen years of his life. The present work is the first to tell the full story of his eventful life and to consider in turn each of his compositions. The author has drawn on Medtner's own correspondence and writings and collected the reminiscences of those who knew him personally to build a comprehensive picture of a great, if still largely unrecognised, musician.Trade Review’Martyn's sympathetic and interesting biography; with its excellent descriptions of Medtner's music, is well worth exploring.’ Robin Zebaida, Classical Music ’All enthusiasts will want a copy and all libraries should have one.’ Musical Times ’Martyn always has some useful insights to offer; above all, because he is devoted to Medtner’s music, knows it intimately and can write about it with an enthusiasm that is both infectious and sensitive, his attractively written book should help foster a climate favourable to the production of a truly definitive study of Medtner. Meanwhile, for the foreseeable future it will do its subject’s cause excellent service.’ Music and Letters '... a comprehensive monograph that helps to restore Medtner's name to the pages of music history.' • Taylor & Francis Ltd The Music of Michael Nyman

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisNyman''s rise to international prominence during the last three decades has made him one of the world''s most successful living composers. His music has nevertheless been criticized for its parasitic borrowing of other composers'' ideas and for its relentless self-borrowing. In this first book-length study in English, Pwyll ap SiÃn places Nyman''s writings within the general context of Anglo-American experimentalism, minimalism and post-minimalism, and provides a series of useful contexts from which controversial aspects of Nyman''s musical language can be more clearly understood and appreciated. Drawing upon terms informed by intertextual theory in general, appropriation and borrowing are first introduced within the context of twentieth-century art music and theory. Intertextual concepts are explained and their terms defined before Nyman''s musical language is considered in relation to a series of intertextual classifications and types. These types then form the basis of a more in-depTrade ReviewThis book tells the story of Nymans work, it reveals the sources and explains the processes of his compositional methodology. It uncovers and displays some of the items in his musical curiosity cabinet and ... presents us with the extended and eccentric ears that hear those enigmatic harmonies. Robert Worby Ap Siôn outlines large themes in this book with such mastery and clarity, and the sections on the experimental music tradition are handled extremely well. Michael Nyman Ap Siôn's line of argument is overall very clear, his research culture is oriented at the highest standard of both classical and critical musicology at the same time... The book has indeed the potential to become a standard work in the Nyman bibliography and will surely be a basis for further research and elaboration on the oeuvre of this authentic British composer. NABMSA Newsletter This is an illuminating and eminently interesting addition to the literature on the music of recent times, as well as a fine introduction to both Nyman and the issues associated with his work. Music Theory Online ... [a] ground-breaking study ... it represents a substantial contribution to musicology ... the study succeeds in its illustration of the subtlety and sophistication of Nymans art of reworking. It also illuminates intertextuality, a topic as relevant to currents in postmodern music as it is to compositional strategies stretching back centuries across musical history. Music and LettersTable of ContentsContents: Foreword; Introduction; Nyman 'on trial'; Man and boy: the early years; Texts in context; Mapping intertextuality in Nyman; Parallel universes: the Nyman-Greenaway soundtracks; Quotation in Nyman's neurological opera; Unchained melodies: intertextuality and inter-referentiality in the string quartets; The author returns: music at The Piano; Gene sequences and musical sequences: Facing Goya; Conclusion; Bibliography; Index.
