Book SynopsisThis book analyzes the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) in the context of the conflict in Darfur, using detailed empirical evidence. The volume traces Darfurâs evolution from forgotten conflict to a major global cause and back to obscurity. The emergence of a far-reaching international response to the war in Darfur began in 2004 and included the most influential international advocacy movement since the anti-apartheid campaign and one of the worldâs largest peacekeeping missions. The book analyzes how Darfur slid back into international obscurity after 2011, despite ongoing violence against civilians and the continued risk of conflict escalation following Omar al-Bashirâs ousting in April 2019. Based on an analysis of more than 100 interviews and over 1,000 media reports, the book examines one of the most pressing questions related to the R2P: why do some situations of mass atrocities cause an international outcry, while others are met with complacency and silence? It argues that the presence or absence of a compelling narrative, which frames a situation in moral terms and unambiguously conveys who is responsible, who suffers, and what should be done, facilitates whether or not sufficient traction will be gained to beget a robust R2P response. This book will be of much interest to students of the Responsibility to Protect, human rights, peacekeeping, conflict resolution, African politics and International Relations in general.Table of ContentsIntroduction: Darfur and the Responsibility to Protect 1. Understanding R2P: Saving Strangers in a Messy World 2. Activating R2P: The Social Construction of Darfur as a Test Case for Saving Strangers 3. Implementing R2P: The International Response to the Darfur Conflict 4. Appropriating R2P: The Ramifications of Saving Strangers on the Darfur Opposition 5. Defying R2P: Sudanese Government Reactions to the International Push to Save Strangers in Darfur 6. Deactivating R2P: The Deconstruction of Darfur as a Case for Saving Strangers Conclusion: Lessons from Darfur as a Test Case for Saving Strangers

Book SynopsisThis textbook introduces students to the sub-field of critical security studies through a detailed yet accessible survey of emerging theories and practices. This third edition contains two new chapters â on âOntological securityâ and â(In)Security and the everydayâ â and has been fully revised and updated.Written in an accessible and clear manner, Critical Security Studies: offers a comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to critical security studies locates critical security studies within the broader context of social and political theory evaluates fundamental theoretical positions in critical security studies against a backdrop of new security challenges. The book is divided into two main parts. Part I, âApproachesâ, surveys the newly extended and contested theoretical terrain of critical security studies: constructivist theories, Critical Theory, feminist and gender approaches, postcolonial Trade ReviewPraise for the 3rd editon:'The welcome third edition of this textbook continues to provide a superb introduction and overview of critical security studies. Combining breadth and depth, it provides an excellent entry-point for students as well as a rich survey of contemporary issues and research for those working in the field.'-- Michael C Williams, University of Ottawa, Canada.Praise for the 2nd edition: 'I use Critical Security Studies as a required reading for my courses in Paris and London - it is in my view the best introduction to the topic and this second edition is very welcome.'-- Didier Bigo, King's College London, UK 'Combining breadth and accessibility with cutting-edge contributions, the second edition of this book provides an excellent overview of critical security studies today.'-- Michael C. Williams, University of Ottawa, Canada 'This second edition gives us a most welcome update of what remains a key introduction to critical security studies. It is great to see the most recent developments in this vibrant field of research included.' -- Jef Huysmans, Open University, UK 'In mapping the recent advances and debates in the vibrant field of critical security studies, this book will be crucially important to students and scholars alike. Critical Security Studies: An Introduction highlights a different topography of critical approaches to security, which is more complex, layered and messy than existing maps have allowed us to see. The book is thus more than an introduction to the field - it is an injunction to rethink the political-theoretical underpinnings in critical approaches and take the debates further.'-- Claudia Aradau, King's College London, UKPraise for the 3rd editon:'The welcome third edition of this textbook continues to provide a superb introduction and overview of critical security studies. Combining breadth and depth, it provides an excellent entry-point for students as well as a rich survey of contemporary issues and research for those working in the field.'-- Michael C Williams, University of Ottawa, Canada'The third edition maps the vibrant developments and contestations that have both extended and reshaped the landscape of critical security studies. By combining approaches and issues, Critical Security Studies: An Introduction offers a layered and nuanced analysis of the field. The addition of emergent theoretical approaches and novel issues of (in)security renders this edition indispensable for both newcomers to critical security studies and scholars well-versed in the debates.'-- Claudia Aradau, King’s College London, UK'This book represents the state of the art with regard to critical security studies. Drawing on a remarkable range of scholarship, the authors address some of the most critical security issues facing us today. I highly recommend this text to all those interested in understanding how security (including human, ontological and everyday security) works in multiple ways and how it affects states, groups and individuals.'-- Catarina Kinnvall, Lund University, SwedenPraise for the 2nd edition: 'I use Critical Security Studies as a required reading for my courses in Paris and London - it is in my view the best introduction to the topic and this second edition is very welcome.'-- Didier Bigo, King's College London, UK 'Combining breadth and accessibility with cutting-edge contributions, the second edition of this book provides an excellent overview of critical security studies today.'-- Michael C. Book SynopsisThis book develops a new contractualist foundation for just war theory, which defends the traditional view of the moral equality of combatants and associated egalitarian moral norms.Traditionally it has been viewed that combatants on both sides of a war have the same right to fight, irrespective of the justice of their cause, and both sides must observe the same restrictions on the use of force, especially prohibitions on targeting noncombatants. Revisionist philosophers have argued that combatants on the unjust side of a war have no right to fight, that pro-war civilians on the unjust side might be targetable, and that lawful combatants on the unjust side might in principle be liable to prosecution for their participation on the unjust side. This book seeks to undercut the revisionist project and defend the traditional view of the moral equality of combatants. It does so by showing how revisionist philosophers fail to build a strong foundation for their arguments and Table of ContentsPart I: Revisionist Just War Theory 1.
