Coach House Books No Place To Go: How Public Toilets Fail Our
Book SynopsisNo Place To Go is a toilet tour from London to San Francisco to Toronto and beyond. From pay potties to deserted alleyways, it is a marriage of urbanism, social narrative, and pop culture that shows the ways — momentous and mockable — public bathrooms just don't work. Like, for the homeless, who, faced with no place to go sometimes literally take to the streets. (Ever heard of a municipal poop map?) For people with invisible disabilities, such as Crohn's disease, who stay home rather than risk soiling themselves on public transit routes. For girls who quit sports teams because they don't want to run to the edge of the pitch to pee. Celebrities like Lady Gaga and Bruce Springsteen have protested bathroom bills that will stomp on the rights of trans people. And where was Hillary Clinton after she arrived back to the stage late after the first commercial break of the live-televised Democratic leadership debate in December 2015? Stuck in a queue for the women's bathroom.Peel back the layers on public bathrooms and it's clear many more people want for good access than have it. Public bathroom access is about cities, society, design, movement, and equity. The real question is: Why are public toilets so crappy?

Welcome Rain Publishers,US London Hidden Interiors: An English Heritage Book
Book SynopsisGiven the remorseless pace of change from 1870 onwards, and the catastrophic damage inflicted during the Second World War, one might be forgiven for thinking that much of London's architectural heritage had been obliterated, and that what survived was given the coup de grace by insensitive post-war planning and architecture. But this is not the case. A wealth of treasures that the public know little about can still be found hidden behind London's inscrutable facades. In contrast to the perceived lack of concern at the loss of so much of London's heritage in the first part of the 20th century, today there is unprecedented public interest in its history and buildings and, not least, what lies behind closed doors inside the offices, institutions, clubs and private houses that so many pass every day; from the discreet grandeur of Whitehall and clubland to the fascinating subterranean spaces that lie beneath the capital. The hugely popular annual Open House London event has created access to over 750 buildings and places normally closed to the public and now attracts more than a quarter of a million visitors. London: Hidden Interiors has 180 examples which have been selected from a complete range of building types to convey the richness and diversity of London's architectural heritage, and the secrets that lie within. Each has had to earn its place, and most deserve much greater coverage than can be accorded here. The selection is an entirely personal one. It concentrates generally on the buildings and interiors that are less well known and to which the public are not normally allowed access - the hidden and the unusual, the quirky and the eccentric, although there is space too for some of the better known. A number celebrate unsung conservation successes of recent years, which deserve greater recognition.Trade ReviewI am dazzled-positively dazzled-this is my book of the year, and you may quote me. I am just blown away to realize that I have walked past so many of these places without having any idea how fabulous they are within. Congratulations on a superlative achievement. -- Bill Bryson

Yet, over the course of three decades, he constructed an artistic masterpiece in his own backyard – the Watts Towers. Trinity University Press,U.S. The Plazas of New Mexico
Book SynopsisThe Plazas of New Mexico documents the rich heritage of New Mexico's plazas and the everyday life and community celebrations that help sustain them. It traces three distinct design traditions -- the Native American center place with kiva and terraced residential blocks, the Hispanic plaza with church and courtyard houses, and the Anglo square with courthouse and business blocks. This landmark volume has resulted from a multi-year research project involving 50 students, a half dozen faculty members, and outside experts working through the Historic Preservation and Regionalism program at the University of New Mexico School of Architecture and Planning. New Mexico's plazas, like urban spaces everywhere, are gaining renewed attention in this time when the challenges of sustainability have sparked the Smart Growth movement, urban revitalization and intensified historic preservation. Detailing the success of restoration projects, this book shows how to encourage heritage tourism in the service of, rather than at the expense of, local quality of life and community sustainability.

Shanghai Press China's Lost Imperial Garden: The World's Most
Book SynopsisBuilt in 1707, the Old Summer Palace (Yuan Ming Yuan) is a masterpiece integrating the classic garden-building arts of China. It is reputed as the "Garden of all Gardens," due to its rich and incomparable landscaping. The beautiful and expansive gardens were known to the world, and triggered the craze of Chinese gardens in 18th century Europe. Victor Hugo, one of the best and greatest known French writers, described it as "Achievements generated from the imagination of a super nation." The Old Summer Palace was also the second political center in addition to the Forbidden City in the Qing Dynasty (1636–1911). Five emperors chose the Old Summer Palace as their venue for administrative governance. They felt it expressed an ideal of state governing and an appeal of aesthetics. Meanwhile, it was the base for turning out important national policies while serving as an important venue for the exchange between Chinese and foreign envoys. Having gone through a span of over 150 years, the Old Summer Palace reflects the history of the rise and fall of the Qing Dynasty. Deserving its honor as the largest royal art museum, the Old Summer Palace contained calligraphic works and paintings of many noted artists, numerous rarities such as secret and valuable books, ancient bells, tri-pots, precious articles, gold and silver wares, jewelry and jade as well as rare flowers and trees of that time. In 1860, the Old Summer Palace was destroyed by British-French Allied Forces and all the collections inside were looted, resulting in a terrible disaster in the history of international culture. Today, the Older Summer Palace represents an important piece of cultural history for human civilization. At the end of the 20th century, Guo Daiheng, the author of this book, led over 80 experts, scholars and professionals in starting a project of Digital Reconstruction of the Old Summer Palace, an unprecedented task in the history of international historic parks. Over the past 15 years, the project has included an orderly development in 3D molding, digital restoration, and digital experience. Scenes of the Old Summer Palace in this book are the exact results from a digitalized Old Summer Palace, which reveals the magnificence of the garden in its prime.
