JOVIS Verlag ASTOC: Architects and Planners
Book SynopsisBilingual edition (English/German) / Zweisprachige Ausgabe (deutsch/englisch) ASTOC architects and planners from Cologne have “double expertise” in the fields of urban design and architecture. The practice’s urban design projects benefit from architectural experience in designing and realizing buildings as do its building designs from urban know-how. ASTOC’s unique working methods are informed by a combination of professional practice, research and teaching. This book provides a first-time comprehensive overview of the ASTOC practice’s projects at home and abroad, which have won numerous prizes and awards—urban design such as HafenCity in Hamburg, at present Europe’s largest inner-city redevelopment project; the master plan for the Emscher-Zukunft which is developing into a force of change for the whole Ruhr area as a result of its novel planning methodology; architecture projects, which range from publicly-funded residential developments to exclusive residential towers, from office buildings to urban supply and infrastructure.

JOVIS Verlag Atsushi Kitagawara Architects
Book SynopsisBilingual edition (English/German) / Zweisprachige Ausgabe (deutsch/englisch) The Japanese architect Atsushi Kitagawara has been firmly established in the architecture scene of his homeland for 30 years. He is a protagonist of an artistically shaped and expressionistic architectural style, which celebrates the experience of space, without losing sight of the functional requirements. Through numerous award-winning projects, such as the Nakamura Keith Haring Museum, he is constantly exploring new means of construction, composition and usage of materials. He thereby creates complex spatial structures and façades, which challenge the conventional viewing patterns of the user, whilst never diminishing the human criteria. This volume from the PORTFOLIO series is the first monograph outside of Japan to present prominent current and older projects by Atsushi Kitagawara Architects by means of text and images. With contributions by: Aaron Betsky, Marco Imperadori, Masato Kawamukai, Kathrin Sauerwein

JOVIS Verlag JSWD Architekten
Book SynopsisTrilingual edition (English/German/French) / Dreisprachige Ausgabe (deutsch/englisch/französisch) The Cologne architecture firm JSWD demonstrates the long-term benefits of an international presence. JSWD Architekten are currently involved in major projects in Italy, Luxembourg, Belgium, Switzerland, and Austria, in some cases with European partners. An understanding of building quality, urban design, and competence in the field of sustainable construction are always central aspects of these. JSWD are involved in a wide range of building projects—from a school to a research institute, from a residential building to a museum—and each project is conceived from scratch. “Architecture and urban development have to reflect diversity”—this credo underpins the designs by JSWD. They have shown on many occasions that they are not afraid of size, nor do they have any reserve about designing the smallest of details within their particular context. The common feature of all their work is the search for homogeneity with regard to the building volume, form, materials, and color. This harmonious architecture by JSWD is therefore multifaceted and coherent at the same time.

JOVIS Verlag Chongqing Grand Theater in China
Book SynopsisExploration of the unique architectural design of the Chongqing Grand Theater in China. The Grand Theater is not a building with a typical façade with wall and window surfaces, but is contained within a well-positioned curtain of frosted glass panels. The magazine Baumeister comments: "The light penetrating from the inside to the outside, as well as the reflection of sun, clouds, and water on the multi-layered and staggered glass surfaces, present the building in ever-changing, mystical lighting moods." In this volume, the architects responsible present the design by means of texts, images, and plans, and there is an essay by the architecture journalist Dirk Meyhöfer in which he discusses the Grand Theater. Text in English and German.

JOVIS Verlag Christoph Mäckler Zoofenster Berlin
Book SynopsisBilingual edition (English/German) / Zweisprachige Ausgabe (deutsch/englisch) At around 119 meters, Zoofenster is one of the tallest buildings in Berlin. However, it is not a typical skyscraper, but rather a complexly tiered structure that interacts with its urban surroundings on a number of levels. The complexity of the location and of its function within the city is also reflected in its layout. The ground floor, with its hotel, gastronomy, and storefront usages, is accessible to the public, extending street life into the building. Contrary to the original plans for a glass high-rise building, Zoofenster was revetted with natural stone. The design is in the tradition of the proverbial “Stone Berlin” of prominent new buildings in recent years, which have created powerful contours and sculptural surfaces using natural stone and have given the city center, in particular, a distinctive character. The glass façade at the top of Zoofenster enhances the impact of the building from a distance, especially at night.

JOVIS Verlag Monuments of Everyday Life: Interplays of City,
Book SynopsisMonuments have fascinated human beings and enriched cities as keepers of memories and history, as places to spend time, as meeting points, and as points of orientation through various times and in various forms. However, as a major component of the discipline of architecture and urban design, the term monument and its relation to the city are in crisis. This book explores a rediscovery of the concept of monuments as essential and creative parts of cities. Based on the re-reading of four powerful urban interplays in Sao Paulo, the concept of 'Monuments of Everyday Life' is outlined, revealing specific spatial patterns that are understood as alternatives to places of instability, commercialisation and homogenisation of urban space. These interplays are relevant as reference points of collective life and material representatives of collective values. Monuments of Everyday Life draws conclusions from the past, but also addresses relevant questions and potentials for urban futures.

JOVIS Verlag Fagus: Industriekultur zwischen Werkbund und
Book SynopsisFagus is the story of a Gesamtkunstwerk and an early example of corporate identity: the Fagus factory in Alfeld an der Leine, built by Walter Gropius and Adolf Meyer from 1911, is regarded as the founding structure of modernism. The architects succeeded in giving a medium-sized company a completely unusual face that was anything but traditional. This was possible because the client and architect formed an extraordinarily favorable constellation. The factory owner combined an affinity toward the life reform movement with American corporate philosophy. With its representative objectivity and extensive use of glass, the factory is also an expression of a new entrepreneurial self-confidence and a modern advertising strategy. The avant-garde further influenced the design of the company’s machines and its printed matter. The list of collaborators reads like a Who’s Who of international modernism: some of Fagus’s advertising, for instance, was designed by Johannes Molzahn, Theo von Doesburg, and Herbert Bayer. And with his series of photographs from 1928, the photographer Albert Renger-Patzsch created what can today be called a classic image of the Fagus factory and its products.

Edition Axel Menges New Museums in Spain: Neue Museen in Spanien
Book SynopsisText in English and German. Spanish museum architecture has experienced a marked upturn since the 1990s, helping even small towns off the tourist beaten track to acquire extraordinary museum buildings. This is expressed most visibly without a shadow of a doubt in Frank O Gehry's Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. But there are not just the international stars who have contributed to this success. Spanish architects in particular have designed unique museums that have changed the look of whole towns. One example is the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León in León in Castille, built by the Madrid architects Mansilla + Tuñon. Rafael Moneo, who recently completed the annexe for the Museo del Prado in Madrid is still the undisputed leading figure in Spanish architecture, but in the meantime architects like Mansilla + Tuñon, who trained under Moneo, are attracting attention internationally as well as in Spain, and so are young talents who have just left architecture school and are successfully designing museums. Spanish architects use a wide variety of formal languages. And yet there are some characteristics that apply to them all: they have never been interested in the games Postmodernism plays; many of them value reinterpreting regional building traditions in a modern way; they are also sensitive to special features of the existing topography. Kenneth Frampton said in this context that Spanish architecture essentially runs counter to the globalisation tendencies that are increasingly reducing architectural form to a comfortable aesthetic product. The present book, which is also suitable as a museum guide, shows that this tendency is particularly conspicuous in the new museums. It confirms the world-class nature of Spanish architecture, recorded from Rafael Moneo's early Museo de Arte Romano in Mérida to Herzog and de Meuron's new Calixa Forum art gallery in Madrid.

JOVIS Verlag Tel Aviv:: The White City
Book SynopsisA photographic guide to the 'White City' of Tel Aviv, which contains over 4000 white Bauhaus buildings. Celebrates the city's current state while placing it within its historical context. Over 4,000 white Bauhaus buildings give Tel Aviv its most famous name: 'the White City'. The city centre, created in the 1930s and '40s under the influence of international modernism, was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 2003. Many architects, most of them emigrating from Europe, found opportunities here to realize their ideological principles and architectural ideas. Tel Aviv's modernism is characterised by a specific combination of functionality and elegance. While the buildings are adapted to the climatic conditions, many of them display highly specific stylistic features. Stefan Boness succeeds in capturing the particularities and unique atmosphere of the city in his photographs. By juxtaposing classical modernism with the contemporary architecture of the city, he demystifies it while simultaneously embedding it in its historical context. This book is published to celebrate the centenary of the Bauhaus movement in 2019. Text in English and German.

De Gruyter Sports Facilities: Leisure and Movement in Urban
Book SynopsisThe book presents current sports buildings, which stand out for the quality of their construction, their integration into the urban context, and their objectives. Sport today means lifestyle and fun and is associated with joining an association and social inclusion as well as with individualization and health awareness. The spectrum of examples from all over Europe ranges from school gyms to urban open spaces that can be used by anyone at any time. The visibility and presence of spatial forms for activities such as skateboarding, jogging or fitness today are radically different from the gyms of the past, providing rich and aesthetic contributions to their surroundings.

De Gruyter Museum Buildings: Construction and Design Manual
Book SynopsisThe museum as a building type and architectural space bear a complex relationship to each other. Architecture competes with the exhibited objects on the one hand and gives way to them on the other, enabling the museum to develop as regards content. This manual guide has its point of departure between both poles and targets both designers and users. The aim of the publication is to facilitate communication in the planning process of a museum, whether this is during the conceptual stage, the competition, or the design and construction phase. In addition to an introduction on the architectural history of the museum, the authors examine the key planning parameters involved in the conception and design of a contemporary museum. Buildings and projects provide inspiration for individual design work.

Artguide s.r.o. Moscow: A Guide to Soviet Modernist Architecture
Book SynopsisMoscow: A Guide to Soviet Modernist Architecture 1955-1991 provides descriptions of almost 100 buildings from the most underrated period of Soviet architecture. This is the first guide to bring together the architecture made during the three decades between Khrushchev and Gorbachev, from the naive modernism of the "thaw" of the late 1950s through postmodernism. Buildings include the Palace of Youth, the Rossiya cinema, the Pioneer Palace, the Ostankino TV Tower, the TASS headquarters, the "golden brains" of the Academy of Sciences and less well-known structures such as the House of New Life and the Lenin Komsomol Automobile Plant Museum. The authors situate Moscow's postwar architecture within the historical and political context of the Soviet Union, while also referencing developments in international architecture of the period.
