Architecture: professional practice Books
JOVIS Verlag Slow Urban Planning: Tribsees’ Zukunft machen

DOM Publishers Architectural Diagrams 2: Construction and Design
Book Synopsis'In the last few decades, the ‘diagram’ has evolved into a constitutive, generative medium for the architectural design process and is now an everyday term used in the context of design. The diagram represents an imaginative process that enables architects to transform typologies, figures, and models using analogue and digital design procedures. This process is creative and erratic – it is highly intuitive and variable and follows its own logic. As such, the diagram, with its lines, points, and strokes, operates at the intersection of geometry, art, and theory.' (from the introduction). The second edition of this book from the series Construction and Design Manuals presents a selection of projects by prominent architects and designers in the form of diagrams, drawn from the fields of architecture, interior design, and installation. This volume also features an essay by the philosopher Lidia Gasperoni.

Vitra Design Museum Kazuo Shinohara: The Umbrella House Project
Book SynopsisThe Umbrella House is the smallest residential home by Japanese architect and mathematician Kazuo Shinohara (1925–2006). This book tells the story of his unique masterpiece, which was first built in Tokyo in 1961. More than sixty years later, a stroke of good fortune made it possible to save the Umbrella House from demolition and move it to a new location, where it now stands on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein (Germany). The wooden house’s post-and-beam construction references traditional Japanese domestic and temple architecture. Experts from Japan and Europe supervised the dismantling of the house in Tokyo and its reassembly in Weil am Rhein. The book traces the long journey of the Umbrella House in lavish illustrations including impressions from 1960s Japan, architectural designs and plans, and photographs that document its dismantling and reassembly or show the house in its new location. Texts by Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA), Shin-ichi Okuyama, and David B. Stewart discuss the Umbrella House against the background of Japanese architectural discourse between 1960 and the present. "The strength of my conviction that A House is a Work of Art was born of the struggle with this small house. I wished to express the force of space contained in the doma [earthen-floor room] of an old Japanese farmhouse, this time by means of the geometric structural design of a karakasa [oiled-paper Japanese umbrella]." Kazuo Shinohara in a text on the Umbrella House published in October 1962 in the Japanese architecture journal Shinkenchiku (vol. 37, no. 10; first published in English in February 1963 in The Japan Architect, vol. 38, no. 2).

JOVIS Verlag Convivial Ground: Stories from Collaborative
Book SynopsisWe are all improvising. We are all making decisions. And we are all watching each other improvise. Together, we are improvising. Decisions become shared ones. We will have built this city together. Convivial Ground invites the reader to discover the work of the transdisciplinary European design-build network Constructlab piece by piece. Taking Ivan Illich’s understanding of conviviality as departure point, the essays, conversations, stories, and images in the book reflect on the specificities of collaborative practices as situated experiments, as well as on their possible roles in the creation of convivial societies. Exploring contemporary conditions of togetherness, learning, and working, the book is not a "how-to" guide, but an invitation to cooperatively write new convivial narratives.

Birkhauser Licht. Sehen.
Trade Review"Unverzichtbar." University of Illinois Press Designing for Diversity
Book SynopsisA powerful statement about the repercussions of discrimination and the benefits of diversity in architectureTrade Review"Ground-breaking. . . . Deserves a place on the bookshelves, bedsides and desks of all educators, managers, [and] design principals. . . . Anthony is an unrepentant idealist, calling for nothing short of a 'transformation' of the culture of architecture; what she offers her readers are the tools by which . . . to begin the process."--Alice T. Friedman, Women's Review of Books "Anthony offers a comprehensive, hard-hitting study of problems that women and minorities face as architects in the US. She surveyed and interviewed some 400 architects and outlines various problems and discrimination against women and minorities, including lower salaries and more responsibility without a rise in position; being kept from contact with clients, field experiences, or construction supervision; and being confined to certain aspects of architecture."--Choice "This book is more than a . . . wake-up call. In a mundane, nuts-and-bolts sense, it provides a solid bibliography for further research on the contributions made by women and people of color to twentieth-century architecture. . . . The author's work articulates the human cost of professional discrimination."--Ludmilla Pavlova, Multicultural Review

Book SynopsisAn indispensable book for architects, urban designers and planners, landscape architects, architectural and urban scholars, government officials, developers, environmentalists, and citizens interested in understanding and shaping the American metropolis.Trade Review"The reader's urban experience will never be quite the same after experiencing this book. With clarity, precision, and deft detail, Kelbaugh pans the unsustainable design strategies and conceits of an auto-crazed culture, as our human spirit vanishes in the rearview mirror. The author is uniquely well qualified to connect the dots between the habitat we could fashion and the humanity we could reclaim." * Planning and Zoning News *"An academic's thoughtful meditation on values that should underlie development—community, sustainable order, and human spirit—and a discerning examination of the proposed remedies." * New Urban News *"Kelbaugh describes architects' and urban planners' responses to the problems of 20th-century urbanism and reviews the predicament of modern suburbanization, offering a cognent critique of both modernist and postmodernist paradigms. In contrast to architectural historians who do similar work, however, Kelbaugh also suggests solutions to the spatial problems he documents." * Choice *Table of ContentsForeword Acknowledgments Introduction 1. University of Washington Press Empire Architecture and the City FrenchOttoman
Book SynopsisExamines the cities of Algeria and Tunisia under French colonial rule and those of the Ottoman Arab provinces. By shifting the emphasis from the 'centers' of Paris and Istanbul to the 'peripheries', this title presents a more nuanced look at cross-cultural exchanges.Trade Review"Ambitious in scope, marvelously conceived, meticulously researched, and generously illustrated, this book . . . an exemplary work of comparative scholarship on imperial urbanism, one that challenges us to consider that similarities between and within empires were greater that their apparent differences." -- Preeti Chopra * Buildings and Landscapes *"Zeynep Celik's new book masterfully weaves together urban and architectural studies with cultural and intellectual history in what will stand as a key contribution to the study of imperialism and modernity. . . . A testament to the merit of this book is the range of questions it provokes and will likely continue to provoke for some time." * Journal of the American Oriental Society *"Zeynep Celik's elegant and insightful study, Empire and the City is a model of brilliant scholarship and complex cross-cultural analysis. Thanks to her subtle handling of a rich array of archival materials, and to her thorough analysis, Celik points us toward a deeper understanding of a lost world of empire and aspiration, and toward a clearer vision of 'modernity.' Empire and the City tells a compelling story—it is a milestone of scholarship and a terrific read." * 2010 Spiro Kostof Award Committee, on awarding the prize from the Society of Architectural Historians *"Celik provides important lessons for those who see our present condition as absolutely unique to our own time. In some ways Empire, Architecture, and the City allows us to look at globalization as a further destabilization and diffusion of the concept of empire—one that is perhaps no longer connected to concepts of space and place, but that nevertheless still reflects an unequal distribution of power that is infinitely more pervasive than it was in the past and that is tied to larger and more numerous imperials interests." * American Historical Review *"A timely study that provides significant insights into pressing debates about modernity and imperialism, Empire, Architecture, and the City should enjoy a broad audience within and well beyond the fields of urban and architectural history. Celik's book offers a refreshing counterpoint to the prevailing monographic focus on individual cities of much recent urban history, particularly studies focused on imperial and colonial situations. While this book is certainly essential reading for scholars of the French and Ottoman empires, it has much to teach all historians of the modern period interested in better understanding the far-reaching and still on-going consequences of nineteenth-century imperialism." * H-Net *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments A Note on Transliterations and Dates Introduction Color Plates 1. Book SynopsisTrade Review"Smith refutes the public and historical notion of Wright as a self-promoter by drawing on evidence of his being an innovator and a social activist who sought divergent routes to publicizing his work for the sake of artistic progress and social improvements. Smith illuminates the multimedia component of Wright's work ... to shed light on the broader discourse of architecture and design as it approaches a new age of modernity."--Metropolis "In her book Wright on Exhibit (Princeton University Press), Kathryn Smith shows how Wright used exhibitions to keep his reputation alive ... A study focused entirely on an architect's exhibitions, as Smith has provided, might seem specific to the point of narrowness--and for another architect perhaps it might be. John Wiley & Sons Inc Impact
Book SynopsisThis issue of AD explores the working discipline of architecture as it impacts the material culture within which it is always embedded. An architecture of impact uses advanced digital techniques in such a way that its material assembly supersedesits use of the digital. Until now, this type of architecture has been formally and materially bound by restrictive conventional methodologies, which the digital project has moved from the scale of installations to three-dimensional building-sized fabrications. Unless architects turn to a new culture ofmaking, architecture shaped by even innovative digital technology will become irrelevant. Architectural projects that are more subversive in how they are created and that lose their digital signature have greater potential to be at the forefront of the discipline's new materialisations. This issue illustrates these ideas and their architectural impact. Book SynopsisEnables readers to easily understand the contract to enable better compliance and efficiency Guide to the FIDIC Conditions of Contract for Construction: The Red Book 2017 helps the reader overcome some of the difficulties encountered on a typical international construction project using the FIDIC Construction Contract 2nd Edition (the 2017 Red Book), by summarizing the activities and duties of those involved, and crystallizing the requirements of the contract. To aid in reader comprehension, the text explains clauses in the sequence they appear in the contract, but also in the order they happen in real time on site. It further provides practical guidance in a concise manner, and in straightforward, jargon-free language. It is a highly practical resource for use during the project, rather than a legal review of the contractual requirements, ensuring readers are fully conversant with the revised requirements and procedures mandated by the 2017 edition of the contraTable of ContentsPreface Acknowledgements Clause 1 General Provisions Clause 2 The Employer Clause 3 The Engineer Clause 4 The Contractor Clause 5 Subcontracting Clause 6 Staff and Labour Clause 7 Plant, Materials and Workmanship Clause 8 Commencement, Delays and Suspension Clause 9 Test on Completion Clause 10 Employer’s Taking Over Clause 11 Defects after Taking Over Clause 12 Measurement and Valuation Clause 13 Variations and Adjustments Clause 14 Price and Payment Clause 15 Termination by the Employer Clause 16 Suspension and Termination by the Contractor Clause 17 Care of the Works and Indemnities Clause 18 Exceptional Events Clause 19 Insurance Clause 20 Employer’s and Contractor’s Claims Clause 21 Disputes and Arbitration Appendices Appendix A Guidance for the Preparation of Particular Conditions Appendix B Employer’s Claims Appendix C Contractor’s Claims Appendix D Notices and Site Organisation Appendix E Daywork and Contemporary Record Sheets Appendix F Contractor’s Costs Appendix G Joint Ventures Index

University of Minnesota Press The Materiality of Architecture
Book SynopsisA new paradigm combining architectural tradition with emerging technologies Digital tools have launched architecture into a dizzying new era, one in which wood, stone, metal, glass, and other traditional materials are augmented by pixels and code. In this ambitious exploration, an eminent thinker examines what, exactly, the building blocks of architecture have meant over the centuries and how technology may—or may not—be changing how we think about them. Antoine Picon argues that materiality is not only about matter and that the silence and inscrutability—the otherness—of raw materials work against humanity’s need to live in a meaningful world. He describes how people define who they are, in part, through their specific physical experience of architectural materials and spaces. Indeed, Picon asserts, the entire paradox of the architectural discipline consists in its desire to render matter expressive to human beings. Through a retrospective review of canonical moments in Western European architecture, Picon offers an original perspective on the ways materiality has varied throughout centuries, demonstrating how experiences of the physical world have changed in relation to the evolution of human subjectivity. Ultimately, Picon concludes that computer-based design methods are not an abrupt departure from previous architectural traditions but rather a new way for architects to control material resources. The result reinforces the fundamentally humanistic nature of architectural endeavor with an increasing sense of design freedom and a release from material constraint in the digital era.Trade Review"Thanks to his immense knowledge of building technologies, along with the acute observations of contemporary practice made over the years, Antoine Picon has carved a masterful synthesis on the very substance of architecture. From ancient vestiges to current designs, the meaning of materials in designs and buildings is dissected in this dense, inspired volume. A must-read for students, scholars, and professionals alike."—Jean-Louis Cohen, author of The Future of Architecture Since 1889: A Worldwide History"This rich and synthetic book rethinks four centuries of Western architectural discourse, arguing that materiality is not a raw essence, nor a state of being, but a branch of technological thinking. In six brisk chapters, Antoine Picon wonderfully combines lucid explanations of architects’ technical processes with insights on their cultural motives. The main takeaway—and it is a brilliant one—is that materials in architecture have ultimately served as a kind of linguistic referent. A needed corrective to recent claims of dematerialization, and a highly rewarding read."—Lucia Allais, author of Designs of Destruction: The Making of Monuments in the Twentieth Century

Kent State University Press Retired, Rehabbed, Reborn: The Adaptive Reuse of
Book SynopsisEach year in the United States, hundreds of religious buildings and schools become vacant or underutilized as congregations and populations merge, move, or diminish. These structures are often well located, attractive, eligible for tax credits, and available for redevelopment. In this practical and innovative handbook, authors Simons, DeWine, and Ledebur have compiled a step-by-step guide to finding sustainable new uses for vacant structures. The reuse of these important buildings offers those charged with revitalizing them an opportunity to capture their embodied energy, preserve local beloved landmarks, and boost sustainability. Rehabbing presents an opportunity for developers to recoup some value from these assets. Neighbors and other stakeholders also enjoy benefits as the historic structures are retained and the urban fabric of communities is preserved. Retired, Rehabbed, Reborn features ten in-depth case studies of adaptive reuse outcomes for religious buildings and public schools that have achieved varying degrees of success. Several case vignettes appear within various chapters to illustrate specific points. The book is a useful tool for architects, planners, developers, and others interested in reusing these important structures. In addition to covering the demographics of demand and supply for historic buildings, the authors demonstrate how to identify a worthy project and how to determine a building’s highest and best use, its market potential, and its financial feasibility, including costs and public subsidies. Finally, they address the planning process and how to time the redevelopment and repurposing of these venerable buildings. Simons, DeWine, and Ledebur explain that while each rehab deal is unique and tricky—especially for prominent community structures that hold significant nostalgic and historical value to community stakeholders—there are identifiable patterns of successful and unsuccessful approaches, patterns that are addressed in turn throughout the redevelopment process. As the nation moves toward a mind-set and practice of recycling, reusing, and repurposing, this unique exploration of how that applies to buildings is an essential guide for anyone interested in being part of the process as communities develop and change.

Columbia Books on Architecture and the City Modern Management Methods – Architecture,
Book SynopsisModernists of the early twentieth century were transfixed by the X-ray—a means of seeing through skin into systems of bones and tissue. What, nearly a century later, can X-rays reveal about the systems of modernism itself? Modern Management Methods asks how the value of a building is produced through instruments of expertise, management ideologies, and historical narratives. Through unorthodox survey practices, the project uses the imaging techniques of conservation and the documentary detritus of heritage preservation to show how scientific methods attempt to produce stable notions of history and value. Deploying the medium of the X-ray, Caitlin Blanchfield and Farzin Lotfi-Jam tell two related histories of building conservation, internationalism, and the making of modernist meaning through the architect Le Corbusier’s building Stuttgart’s Weissenhofsiedlung and the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

Presses Polytechniques et Universitaires Romandes Perspective on EPFL – Science, Architecture,
Book SynopsisTo mark its fiftieth anniversary, the Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) gave free rein to three photographers, who were asked to capture the essence of the school and its future direction. Catherine Leutenegger’s work delivered many detailed portraits of science, blurring the lines between the images she created and those that she discovered and made her own. Bogdan Konopka, meanwhile, stripped EPFL’s buildings down to their still-life form. And Olivier Christinat brought places to life by roaming the grounds and discreetly immersing himself in the society of campus. All three offer distinct perspectives on a unique institution, one that has seen its influence spread far and wide during its first half century of existence.

Lars Muller Publishers Sauerbruch Hutton: Archive 2
Book Synopsis"The current compendium traces the development of the office's architectural practice and thinking through a series of completed buildings, works in progress and projects that, as yet, remain unrealised. The book illuminates its strategies of sustainable design, its multiple interventions in the post-industrial cityscape and the unfolding of an architectural language full of sense and sensuality that reacts to its physical and social context, as well as to functional, technical, spatial and sculptural considerations. The book reveals Sauerbruch and Hutton's understanding of their profession as an ongoing process of research into presence and future, and is the only comprehensive documentation of their numerous works."

Lars Muller Publishers David Adjaye: Constructed Narratives
Book SynopsisConstructed Narratives brings together essays and several recently completed buildings by David Adjaye, in the United States and elsewhere. In the essays, Adjaye shows how his approach to the design of temporary pavilions and furniture, private houses, and installations at the 2015 Venice Biennale feeds into his designs for public buildings. Other essays discuss his engagement with geography, the urban environment, his approach to materiality, and architectural types. The presented projects include two public libraries and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, all in Washington D.C., a residential mixed-use building in New York, and a hybrid art-retail building in Beirut. Two of Adjaye's current projects are also included.
