  • Old Houses Made New

teNeues Publishing UK Ltd Old Houses Made New

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe book is a compendium of homes, including apartments and single-family houses, that have been remodeled to suit contemporary lifestyle needs. Rehabilitations of living spaces are often done to reanimate existing constructions that, over time, have become impractical, if not obsolete. The challenge is to adapt these existing buildings to contemporary standards while maintaining what might still be useful or what we like about them. Most old buildings are very compartmentalised, reflecting the human habits of their time and the available building technology. Nowadays, we like to live in much more open and airy spaces — and new building methods allow for the removal of walls that ultimately free up space. We renovate and upgrade living spaces to various degrees, ranging anywhere from upgrading fixtures and appliances to removing and reconstructing walls and expanding buildings. While extensive work is sometimes required, these rehabilitations can result in stunning transformations. Many add comfort and increase utility, not to mention that the investment generally adds value to the property. This inspirational book showcases a range of rehabilitated projects, from ones that begin by totally stripping out interiors to a clean slate, to less extensive work that might be limited to cosmetic changes or simple finish and fixture upgrades. Existing dwellings have proved themselves flexible to changing necessities, and they are key to the regeneration of our living environment. Text in English, German and French.

  • Mackintosh

    Taschen GmbH Mackintosh

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisScottish architect, designer, and painter Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868–1928) was one of the earliest pioneers of modern architecture and design. While he did not receive much recognition in his hometown of Glasgow during his lifetime, his bold new blend of simplicity and poetic detail inspired modernists across Europe. Mackintosh’s avant-garde approach embraced a variety of media as well as fresh stylistic devices. His multi-faceted oeuvre incorporated architecture, furniture, graphic design, landscapes, and flower studies. He embraced strong lines, elegant proportions, and natural motifs, combining an adventurous dose of japonisme with a modernist sensibility for function. He preferred bold black typography, restrained shapes, and tall, generous windows suffusing rooms with light. Much of his work was collaborative practice with his wife, fellow artist Margaret Macdonald. The couple made up half of the loose Glasgow collective known as “The Four”; the other two were Margaret’s sister, Frances, and her husband, Herbert MacNair. On the continent, the “Glasgow Style” was met with delight. In Italy, Germany, and, in particular, Austria, artists of the Viennese Secession and Art Nouveau drew much from its rectilinear yet lyrical forms. In this introductory book, we take in Mackintosh’s practice across art, architecture, and design to explore his particular combination of the statuesque and sensual and its vital influence on modernist expression across Europe. Featured projects include his complete scheme for the Willow Tea Rooms and the Mackintosh Building at the Glasgow School of Art, widely considered Mackintosh’s masterwork.

Book SynopsisWhen she discovered that nearly half of France’s 44,000 heritage sites were chateaux in various states of repair, Catherine Scotto embarked on a journey to find out who, exactly, lived in these medieval fortresses and, more importantly, what they were like on the inside. From Normandy to Provence and everywhere in between the owners of these chateaux–including decorators, antique dealers, artists, and collectors—represent the epitome of French culture and taste. Each chateau is presented in double-page full-color spreads that feature alluring interiors and information about the hosts and their design journeys. There’s something for everyone here—whether it’s homes where simplicity and minimalism reign, rooms as exuberantly busy as a 14th-century tapestry, or interiors transformed by surprising, era-bending feats. Morel’s breathtaking, naturally lit photographs of generous kitchens, cozy drawing rooms, spacious bedrooms, ingeniously imagined bathrooms, and intriguing hallways and stairwells offer endless inspiration, while Scotto’s engaging text gives readers a feel for the kinds of people who take on such a daunting yet satisfying challenge.

Hicks records the formal spaces with vibrancy, capturing the magnificent rooms furnished with treasures from the Royal Collection.Starting at the Grand Staircase, Hicks leads us through the state rooms, which include the White Drawing Room and the Blue Drawing Room that both overlook the palace gardens; the Ballroom, which is the setting for twenty investiture ceremonies each year; and the Throne Room, used by Queen Victoria for spectacular costume balls in the 1840s. Book SynopsisThe first book from SawyerBerson illustrates the award-winning firm’s quintessential pairings of modernism and classicism in seaside houses, metropolitan residences, and spectacular garden retreats.Treating architecture, landscape, and interior design as complementary endeavors, Brian Sawyer and John Berson have been ahead of their time and influential in the world of design since the founding of their eponymous partnership in 1999. SawyerBerson’s prodigious use of traditional and modern vocabularies has gained the firm widespread recognition and many notable clients. Meticulous attention to detail and versatility combine to create a wide variety of projects. In the Hamptons, a modernist house of stone and glass lets in the sun and sea views while secluded by the dunes and drifts of native grasses. This book reflects that harmonious spirit through projects like a grand East End estate that still embraces the area’s simple shingle vernacular, a midcentury-modern home in Bridgehampton sporting a cantilevered roof terrace, and a Manhattan town house brightened by a brick and ivy garden." —ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST"The first book from Sawyer | Berson illustrates the award-winning firm’s quintessential pairings of modernism and classicism in seaside houses, metropolitan residences, and spectacular garden retreats." —MOFFLY MEDIA""To be modern is not a fashion, but a state," Le Corbusier once said. "It is necessary to understand history, and he who understands history knows how to find continuity between that which was, that which is, and which will be." Few contemporary design firms are as up to the task as Sawyer | Berson, the practice began in 1999 by Brian Sawyer and John Berson. They met in the office of the famed Robert A.M. Stern and developed an approach that treated architecture, landscape design and interior design as equals in the pursuit of an aesthetic beau idéal. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisAlso available as Art Edition (No. 1–1,000) including an exclusive, square format reproduction of the Arlecchino coffee table and a set of four numbered ocean liner interior prints. To study Gio Ponti’s prolific body of work is to appreciate the clear, unifying vision behind a complex creative universe. A synthesis of the arts, his creations expand intuitively with the Italian grandeur and studied lightness that defined his iconic style. Ponti’s rare capacity to move seamlessly between scales allowed him to approach the design of a teaspoon with the same conviction as he did an entire city. He was as much an architect and designer as he was a publisher, poet, and man. A treasure in its own regard, his contribution is also a distinctive landmark of Italy’s mid-century Renaissance and the modernist values it sought to realize. This is the most comprehensive account of Ponti’s work to date, unprecedented in scale and scope. It tracks the development of his oeuvre over 6 decades, with 136 projects indexed and reproduced in high resolution, each object framed by the context in which Ponti had created it. Like windows onto his elusive life, unpublished materials and candid imagery create new dialogues between his famous masterpieces and his lesser-known feats. A rich layer of texts, featuring an extensive biographical essay by Stefano Casciani, was produced in close collaboration with the Gio Ponti Archives offering an intimate insight on his life’s work. Materializing Ponti’s core philosophy of modernity, this book presents architecture as a performing object, a "self-illuminating" stage for his humanistic art de vivre and boundless creativity.Trade Review“TASCHEN comes through with Gio Ponti… Think of it not as a book but as a vehicle for an incredible journey.” * The Los Angeles Times *“…the iconic Italian architect and designer’s greatest works.” * eveningstandard.co.uk *“…a fascinating glimpse into the life and vast catalog of work of Italian architect Gio Ponti.” * fastcompany.com *“This prodigious volume features unpublished materials and candid imagery offering exciting new insight into both his well-known masterpieces and more obscure feats alike.” * surfacemag.com *“Gio Ponti offers a technicolor glimpse into the life and work of the godfather of Milanese design.” * interviewmagazine.com *“Gio Ponti aims to be the final say about the designer’s work and importance.” * architectmagazine.com *“…an absolute beauty about the refined Italian architect-designer who defined a vein of elegant, uncontroversial mid-century chic.” * The Financial Times *“…a tour de force investigation of the designer’s oeuvre.” * architecturaldigest.com *“There’s an irony here, that a prince of lightness such as Ponti should be remembered with something so massive, but it’s hard to do justice to his output in any other way… It successfully captures Ponti’s spirit.” * The Observer *“The book is full of revelations. But for those who know Ponti for his architecture and his furniture, the real surprise is the ways they came together in rooms that display his seemingly endless supply of creativity.” * 1stdibs.com *“The most resistant element is not wood, is not stone, is not steel, is not glass. Book SynopsisAn exhilarating and eclectic volume on the social, cultural and technological history of interior design from prehistory to the present day, revealing how spaces shape our lives and why it matters. From traditional nomadic dwellings to state-of-the-art airports, through monumental temples and Baroque palaces to high-rise apartments and high-fashion boutiques, The Story of the Interior explores an exciting array of inside spaces from around the world to reveal how the fundamental elements of a room have evolved and endured. Organized in three parts The Room, The Private Interior and The Public Interior the book presents a fascinating account of how the interior has been conceived and thought of from antiquity to the present day. By calling attention to the most basic elements of inside space walls, doors, windows, furniture, ambience to name a few this engaging exploration delves into how private and public interiors actively shape the way we live, work, learn and play. Brooker deftly guides us through interiors as diverse as Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, Olafur Eliasson's The Weather Project, the Prada store in Marfa, Texas, and Sou Fujimoto's NA House, as well as the rock-cut Buddhist temples of India, medieval European castles and ancient Egyptian tombs, to unveil the drastically different and surprisingly similar spaces that surround us. The result is a fascinating tour of global interiors, tracing the genesis and evolution of these places and how they help us understand human presence and behaviour.

Book SynopsisThis book investigates the relationship architecture has with the underground. It provides a broad ranging historical and theoretical survey of, and critical reflection on, ideas pertaining to the creation and occupation of underground space. It overturns the classic dictates of construction on the surface and through numerous examples explores recoveries of existing voids, excavations, caves, quarries, grottos and burrows. The exploitation of land, especially in areas of particular value, has given rise to the need to reformulate the usual approach to building. If the development of urban sprawl, its infrastructure and its networks, generates increasingly compromised landscapes, what are the possible strategies to transform, expand and change the usual relationship between abuse of soil and unused subsoil?Psychological, philosophical, literary and cinematographic legacies of underground architecture are mixed with the compositional, typological and constructive expedieTrade Review"Antonello Boschi investigates the subject in a wide-ranging interdisciplinary, historical and theoretical survey. Book SynopsisThough much attention has been given to the prefabrication of architecture, there has been little discussion on the influence and importance of prefabrication within the interior environment. This book does just that, providing a comprehensive investigation into the prefab interior from the nineteenth century to the present and beyond. Each chapter focuses on the typology of the prefabricated interior, looking at the bathroom, kitchen, workspace, furniture, mobile interiors, the prefab house, textiles, wearables, and the digital realm of printed interiors. Taken as a group, these chapters and illustrations indicate that constructs of the interior have been pivotal in the generation of techniques and processes of prefabrication in Architecture and the built environment. Chapters explore a diverse range of examples of innovative prefabricated elements and assemblages within interior environments, illustrating the inherent sustainability, accessibility, building efficiency and af

Book SynopsisThe Covid-19 lockdowns caused people worldwide to be confined to their homes for longer and on a greater scale than ever before. This forced many unprecedented changes to the way we treat domestic space as relationships shifted between the public and the private worlds, and homes were rapidly adapted to accommodate the additional roles of schools, offices, gyms, restaurants, making-spaces and more. Above all, our understanding of the home as a site to support and enhance the well-being of its inhabitants changed in a variety of novel ways. Interiors in the Era of Covid is a collection of essays which explore the complex ways in which our inside spaces (contemporary and historical) have responded to Covid-19 and other human crises. • Interior Decorating in Nineteenth-Century France:

Manchester University Press Interior Decorating in Nineteenth-Century France:

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores the beginnings of the interior design profession in nineteenth-century France. Drawing on a wealth of visual sources, from collecting and advice manuals to pattern books and department store catalogues, it demonstrates how new forms of print media were used to ‘sell’ the idea of the unified interior as a total work of art, enabling the profession of interior designer to take shape. In observing the dependence of the trades on the artistic and public visual appeal of their work, Interior decorating in nineteenth-century France establishes crucial links between the fields of art history, material and visual culture, and design history.Trade Review'Interior decorating in nineteenth-century France provides a detailed and authoritative study of the ways in which collectors, advice writers, architects, upholsterers and cabinetmakers, decorators and other trades, theatre designers, and workers in the new department stores functioned as proto-interior designers. They bridged today’s professional borders to orchestrate the historicist or otherwise themed spaces in which everyday life in France was played out in the second half of the nineteenth century. Lasc provides a valuable study of the development and professionalisation of interior design in nineteenth-century France which expands and complements the Anglo-American focus of much existing work. She does this through a comprehensive examination of a wealth of primary and secondary sources, and by rethinking assumptions about gender, historicism and modernism and the interplay of a number of professions in interior design practice and mediation.'Grace Lees-Maffei, Professor of Design History, University of Hertfordshire'Framed against the background of widespread economic and social change following the French Revolution, Anca Lasc’s Interior decorating in nineteenth-century France is a convincing and well-documented contribution to the history of the interior design profession in France. It mines a rich but little-examined array of print resources to construct a detailed history of the domestic interior, while also offering a novel interpretation of the origins of l’art nouveau that challenges prevailing views of the dichotomy between historicism and modernity.”David Raizman, Distinguished University Professor Emeritus, Westphal College of Media Arts & Design, Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA‘Abundantly illustrated with seventy-one original, black-and-white figures photographed by the author, the book makes an important contribution to the study of nineteenth-century French design. The realm of visual sources is broad, from decorating manuals to watercolours, yet the accumulation of figures interspersed in the book teases out the striking coherence of the corpus.’Catherine Girard, Journal of Design History, Volume. 32, Issue 2, May 2019'Anca Lasc’s massively researched and clearly presented investigation constitutes a vital chapter in the history of this kind of design.'Stefan Muthesius, Nineteenth-Century French Studies‘brings to light an impressive number of understudied source materials on French design ... a useful reference for those interested in connections between the work of professional domestic designers and other print images of interiors, such as those found in mass-circulating fashion plates and photographs. It should also appeal to scholars of literature seeking historical context for the interiors that figure prominently in works by certain literary authors of the period’Heidi Brevik-Zander, H-France Review Vol 19 (2019) no 287‘joins some of the most intriguing and ambitious contemporary writing on nineteenth-century design by pointing to the ways in which developments in design, its expression, and its practice were very often mediated quite outside of the practice of design itself.’Alexandra Fraser (2019), Design and Culture, 11:2, 245-247‘Lasc recounts a very detailed history of a profession through its literature and visual culture. This history, especially her detailing of the intertwined nature of art and decoration throughout the nineteenth century, allows us to understand better the history of design and where design, the decorator, and the interior as a space of art, were at the end of the nineteenth century.’ Emily Davis Winthrop, H-France Review Vol 19 (2019) no 286 -- .Table of ContentsIntroduction1 The collector as taste advisor and interior decorator: popular advice manuals and the orchestration of the private interior2 The inventor of interiors: old professions in search of a name3 Private home, artistic stage: the circulation and display of interior dreamscapes 4 The image of furniture: department stores and the trade in interior decoration designs5 Beautiful disorder, exception to the rule: the development of a new design aestheticEpilogue: the presentness of historicism: the Musée centennal du mobilier and the legacy of proto-interior designers Index

Book SynopsisThe experience of architectural spaces is formed by the way they are staged. The Drama of Space examines the composition and articulation of architectural spaces in terms of spatial dramaturgy, as a repertoire of means and strategies for shaping spatial experience. This fundamental approach to architectural design is presented in four parts: Archetypal principles of spatial composition are traced from the study of three assembly buildings of the early modern period in Venice. Theatre, film, music, and theory provide background knowledge on dramaturgy. Detailed analyses of 18 international case studies offer new perspectives on contemporary architecture. The book ends with a systematic presentation of the dramaturgy of space, its parameters and tools, in architectural design.
