Book SynopsisThis new book by Labics, one of Italy’s leading architectural firms, is devoted to the country’s architecture of public space. Squares, galleries, loggias, porticoes, and courtyards are the elements that characterise Italy's historic towns and cities — and that make the experience of these public spaces intense and attractive. Labics sets out to explore these enchanting spaces, to analyse their history and typologies, and to document and describe them through newly produced photographs, plans, and diagrams. They offer a taxonomy of solutions that, as a whole, forms a timeless theory for the design of public spaces. The Architecture of Public Space features a captivating collection of image material that visually decodes these characteristic core elements of Italian architecture and specifies their role in the definition of public space. The volume highlights the architectural solutions from the 13th to the 20th centuries that produce the particular spatial quality of these urban structures and sets out how they were originally established for and are continuing to be used by the people.

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book contains a unique collection of various perspectives on the relationship between structures and the forms and spaces of architecture. As such it provides students and professionals alike with an essential sourcebook that can be mined for visual inspiration as well as for textually rich and authoritative insight into the links between structure, architecture, and cultural context. The chapters address fundamental structural elements and systems: columns, walls, beams, trusses, frames, tensile structures, arches, domes and shells. Each chapter is subdivided into two parts:â The essays â introduce the chapters with the reprinting of a curated set of essays and excerpts by various authors that uniquely address how particular structural elements or systems relate in essential fashion to architectural design concepts.â The model studies â physical models of the overall structural systems of several notable contemporary buildings from Europe, North and South America, Africa and Asia are illustrated with large photographs, detail close-ups, and views of their external forms and internal spaces that establish the exceptional qualities of these projects in connecting structural form to architectural design objectives. Mosaic layouts complete the chapters with a collection of photographs of yet more models whose particular details and unique features serve to extend the visual repertoire of the structural type being considered. The combination, juxtaposition and mutual positive reinforcement of these two collections, one largely textual and the other image based, provides the reader with unique and multifaceted insights into how structural forms and systems can be related to architectural design intentions. Conveyed by a strong and deliberate graphical design format, this assembly of materials gets to the very essence of structures within the context of architecture, and will inspire students and practitioners alike to make strategic design decisions for their own projects.Trade Review"Some books are treasure troves – ensembles of deep human experiential research – which need to be kept close to hand. This book is one such treasure. The combination of selected texts with the constructed models becomes the thoughtfully constructed intellectual structure within which to navigate these essential topics." - Yvonne Farrell + Shelley McNamara, Grafton Architects"During the past decades, architecture has been dominated by an interest in expressive singular forms, often facilitated by computerized design and methods of calculation, novel material technologies, and robotic methods of production. The book Model Perspectives: Structure, Architecture and Culture returns architectural thinking back to its tectonic principles and elementary syntax. It also emphasizes the essential cultural connectedness of the art of building; architectural meaning cannot be invented, as it is bound to reflect the human existential and mental reality. All true architectural meaning echoes tradition, and the most radical artistic innovations become part of this esteemed continuum of tradition." - Juhani Pallasmaa, architect, writer, professor emeritus, Helsinki University of Technology (Aalto University, School of Art, Design and Architecture), FinlandTable of Contents1. Book SynopsisMeet the DIY builders of the Pacific Coast, whose homes are practical, imaginative, and environmentally friendly. If you’re fascinated by homes and architecture or if you’re seeking inspiration for your own DIY building project, then you have something in common with Lloyd Kahn. In 2004, he discovered a group of unique carpenters along the Pacific Coast of North America. Over a two-year period, he made multiple trips up the coast, shooting photographs and interviewing builders. The result of his efforts was Builders of the Pacific Coast, a spotlight on nearly 50 amazing builders and structures between San Francisco, California, and Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Every featured building is rich in culture, innovative design, and artistic creativity. Three builders in particular are prominently featured: Lloyd House, master craftsman and designer, who created a series of unique homes on a small island; Bruno Atkey, builder of numerous houses and lodges made from hand-split cedar; and SunRay Kelley, barefoot builder tuned into nature, who designed and built wildly imaginative structures. In addition, you’ll see working homesteads, sculptural buildings of driftwood, homes that are beautiful and practical, live-aboard boats, caravans, and examples of stunning architectural design—all in an incomparable full-color book with coffee-table appeal. Inside you’ll find: images of builders and their creations along the Pacific Coast of North America Stunning designs and innovative structures Fine craftsmanship with local materials Form plus function A continuation of Lloyd’s journeys into the creative processes of owner-built homes, this book explores unique techniques, use of sustainable materials, and essential dedication to natural elements. With more than 1,000 stunning photographs, as well as detailed drawings of the homes, this collection creates a template for a future filled with forward-thinking architecture.

Designers will need to analyse the qualities of space again more closely – be it the physical space or the digital space: Space should be staged and designed so as to support communication, facilitate encounter and experience, create an immersive effect and, of course, provide content that adds value. Grove Press / Atlantic Monthly Press If Walls Could Speak: My Life in Architecture

Book SynopsisOver more than five decades, legendary architect Moshe Safdie has built some of the world's most influential and memorable structures - from the 1967 modular housing scheme in Montreal known as Habitat to the Marina Bay Sands development in Singapore. For Safdie, the way a space functions is fundamental; he is deeply committed to architecture as a social force for good, believing that any challenge, including extreme population density and environmental distress, can be addressed with solutions that enhance community and uplift the human spirit. If Walls Could Speak takes readers behind the veil of an essential yet mysterious profession to explain through Safdie's own experiences how an architect thinks and works - from the spark of imagination through the design process, the model-making, the politics, the engineering, the materials. Relating memorable stories about what has inspired him - from childhoods in Israel and Montreal to the projects and personalities worldwide that have captured his imagination - Safdie reveals the complex interplay that underpins every project and his vision for the role architecture can and should play in society at large. Illustrated throughout with drawings, sketches, photographs, and documents from his firm's voluminous archives, If Walls Could Speak is a book like no other, and will forever change the way you look at and appreciate any built structure.Trade ReviewWhat are the deep personal sources of creativity? How is it possible for someone to take the conventional built environment and make it new? A visionary book, If Walls Could Speak triumphantly answers these questions by giving us intimate access to the life and mind of one of the greatest architects of our time. -- Stephen Greenblatt, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of THE SWERVEThe world knows Moshe Safdie as an international architect of the greatest modern buildings. With this compelling memoir Moshe Safdie will now be known as a beautiful writer who conveys - with elegance and understanding - what it takes to create a building while telling the story of a long and fascinating life the reader is privileged to share. -- Ruth RogersIf Walls Could Speak is not just about architecture; it is about a man in search of beauty, truth, and service to people through examining "nature, the nature of the universe, and the nature of man." In his autobiography, Moshe Safdie succeeds in making the walls speak, revealing not only the depth, curiosity and drive of a man with a mission, but also the challenges he faced creating extraordinary work for over six decades. Perhaps he says it best: "If we seek truth, we shall find beauty." I was profoundly moved reading this book. -- Yo Yo MaMoshe Safdie makes beautiful and important buildings. He makes buildings that infuse into your day and life a sense that bigger things might suddenly be possible. He makes buildings that you will never, ever forget. What is remarkable about If Walls Could Speak is that Safdie's memoir is as unforgettable as anything he has produced out of stone, cement and steel. Because of his storytelling gifts, it is also a coming-of-age story in which one man developed a vision for how he could do his part to improve the experience of living -- Samantha Power, former United Nations ambassador and bestselling author of THE EDUCATION OF AN IDEALIST[A] marvelous look at his life and career...In prose unburdened by pretension, Safdie articulates his artistic philosophy against the backdrop of a changing world...A brilliant defense of architecture as an expression of truth and beauty. * Publishers Weekly (starred review) *Table of Contents1: One A House on a Hill 2: Ideas and Mentors 3: The World of Habitat 4: Old City, New City 5: Private Jokes in Public Places 6: "Does God Live There?" 7: Cutting through the Mountain 8: The Power of Place 9: Megascale 10: What If? 11: Faith and Peace

Book SynopsisHow do our minds work when we design? How do we organise and assimilate information, create and evaluate options, and make decisions? These questions have fascinated and absorbed architect and sculptor Richard Bertman (FAIA) since his graduate school days. Now, after a 40-year career, Bertman has used the design of a vacation house as an experiment to explore these questions. The result, documented in The Design Process and the Art of the Single Family Home, is a fascinating and revealing insight into the creative process. With detailed notes and sketches, Bertman charts each stage of the design process, questioning and examining why certain decisions are made, how problems are solved, and generally exploring the processes involved in creative thinking.

Book SynopsisWe recognise Mario Botta's buildings for their strong presence. His architecture is not ephemeral. It shapes the mass firmly and precisely. It touches the ground with self-reliance. A building by Mario Botta is an autonomous object. It comprises an ordered world of its own make. It is standing in dialogue with the urban tissue, but it establishes its own order as if it aims at differentiation instead of integration. Architectural order represents the core of his personal idiom. It is a well structured, compositional order which organises everything into a whole, as an underlying thread that connects and brings together houses on the mountains to museums and churches, banks and commercial buildings to buildings on the ground and buildings underground, different buildings at different places in time. The themes that underlie Mario Botta's architecture are ties that connect and spines that support, common threads that bind one building to the next. His architecture is one of mass. It is then of no surprise that mass is the first thing to be defined and ordered, in his creative process. The volume of his buildings is mostly composed by one or more primary solids. Volume is thus an a-priori for Botta. It is conceived beforehand, the starting point to the adventure of architectural design. Book SynopsisThe "villino", planned in the northern Rome among 1953 and 1959, is a singular building. It can be shortly described as a volume cutted horizontally by an open air floor that generate two solids connected by a couple of stairs that, in a "constructivist" act, climb the sky to form a wide terrace -with a great view on Rome- whose function is connected to only one flat. Luccichenti, thanks to this actions (the cut, the stairs, the terrace), is able to superimpose two autonomous blocks in one only building. This typological hybridization between palace and villa in one building make complete an experiment that many architects, even nowadays, are not able to lead. This sophisticated compositive mechanism is in its sharp "lecture": the path that leads from the first idea to the final construction of the "villino Trionfale" keeps more than 5 years. If 5 years seems a short time to a contemporary Italian architect, it was a very long period in the fifties, that I like to attribute to the deep theory work by Luccichenti.

Book SynopsisWood is usually perceived as a "traditional" material. However, the properties of this material have now for some time made it possible to design free shapes and highly complex structures. Today, the wood laboratory of the EPF Lausanne, which was originally founded by Julius Natterer, is testing the production of origami structures, ribbed shells, fabric structures and curved panels under the guidance of Professor Weinand using digital calculation and computer-aided processing methods. The research results are tested in prototypes, which demonstrate the potential applications in large-scale timber buildings. By exploring the hitherto unused potential of wood as a construction material, this book provides an exciting and inspiring outlook on a new generation of timber buildings.

Book SynopsisA sumptuously illustrated survey of the art and architecture of this prosperous Roman town, remarkably preserved by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79Trade Review"A must-read for archeology buffs and lovers of ancient Roman culture and art, this book evokes a voluptuous culture distant from our own and yet with images so strangely familiar that it will capture the imagination of any student of humanity." --Publishers Weekly "A spectacular collaboration among Maria Paola Guidobaldi, director of excavations at Herculaneum, the scholar Domenico Esposito, and the photographer Luciano Pedicini. This large folio volume provides floor plans, detailed descriptions, and evocative illustrations: Pedicini's careful choice of lighting and viewpoints makes even such well-known objects as the bronze statues from the Villa of the Papyri look startlingly new. Maria Paola Guidobaldi and Domenico Esposito [employ] meticulous descriptions, finding, remarkably, the right words for every last detail. These accounts make for slow, careful reading, but close description is the only sure way to open our eyes to the full brilliance of such intricate designs, and the two archaeologists' abilities at putting shapes into words are extraordinary (the book is also exceedingly well translated)." --New York Review of BooksTable of ContentsIntroduction (p. 7) The History of the Excavations (p. 21) Theater (p. 31) Basilica Noniana (p. 35) The Urban Fabric (p. 41) Living in Herculaneum (p. 61) HERCULANEUM IN THE HELLENISTIC AGE Samnites House (p. 81) SECOND STYLE PAINTING (p. 85) Village of the Papyri (p. 89) House of the Inn (p. 119) The Villa of the Royal Stable at Portici (p. 123) Three Fragments in the Second Style (p. 127) THIRD STYLE PAINTING (p. 133) House of the Bronze Herm (p. 143) House of the Dionysian Reliefs (p. 151) House of the Carbonized Furniture (p. 157) Wooden Furniture from Herculaneum (p. 163) House of Beautiful Courtyard (p. 171) Great Taberna (p. 179) A Bakery (p. 183) House of the Tuscan Colonnade (p. 191) House of the Grand Portal (p. 205) House of the Wooden Screen (p. 217) FOURTH STYLE PAINTING (p. 227) House of the Black Salon (p. 237) House of Bicentenary (p. 247) House of the Two Atria (p. 255) House of the Stags (p. 259) House of the Skeleton (p. 287) House of Neptune and Amphitrite (p. 283) House of the Mosaic Atrium (p. 293) House of the Telephusb Relief (p. 303) College of the Augustales (p. 313) Augusteum (p. 327) Chronology (p. 348) Selected Bibliography (p. 349) Index of Proper Names (p. 350) Illustration Credits (p. 352)

Book SynopsisPeter Markli has been one of the most striking protagonists of German-Swiss architecture since the founding of the movement in the early 1980s. However, his impressive buildings resist classification; they do not fit any particular scheme or style, as each structure is developed on an intensely intimate level. This results in wholly unique edifices, which provoke questions about humanity's use of architecture as a means of expressing timelessness, rigidity, and permanence. This volume presents 17 buildings erected by Markli over the past 15 years. Each is analysed thoroughly with texts, plans and images. The presented works are complemented by enlightening essays by Florian Beigel, Philip Christou, Franz Wanner and Ellis Woodman. An exciting interview with Peter Markli himself rounds off this impressive monographic collection, conducted by Elena Kossovskaja.

Book SynopsisTypology 2 follows up on the preceding and successful Typology, published in 2012. Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein together with their teaching staff and students at ETH Zurich expanded their research on building typology to four more metropolises, again in Europe, Latin America, and Asia: Paris, Delhi, Sao Paulo, and Athens. 180 buildings were analysed over the past two years to find inspiration and models that can be adapted for the local context of any given city. Each example is documented with an image, site and floor plans, axonometric projection, key data, and a brief description. An introduction and four essays on the interaction between various protagonists and in particular the effect of governing local building regulation again show the potential for contemporary urban architecture. The result is again a rich sourcebook of great practical value for students, lecturers and practitioners of architecture. Book SynopsisCovering a range of media and a wide geographical spread, Making Modernity in the Islamic Mediterranean reveals how 19th-century artists in the Middle East and North Africa reckoned with new tools, materials, and tastes from local perspectives.Trade Review"This book is a timely contribution to pressing debates about visual cultures of modernity across the modern Mediterranean. With a geographic diversity reaching from the Ottoman capital across North Africa, the essays in this book address a rich range of themes, from emergent forms of modern historicism to original readings of objects and images that trouble entrenched assumptions about aesthetic value. So too, this book's revisionary perspective makes clear the necessity to address the diversity of visual culture, from painting to photography, from craft work to infrastructure. The collective enterprise of this anthology transforms our understanding of what it meant to be modern across the Islamic Mediterranean."—Mary Roberts, author of Istanbul Exchanges: Ottomans, Orientalists and Nineteenth-Century Visual Culture, University of Sydney"Making Modernity in the Islamic Mediterranean combines a compelling and well-researched range of studies that make a valuable contribution to the pluralization of global modernisms in art history, with a focus on nineteenth-century Islamic art and visual culture. This volume is a welcome addition to the literature of Islamic modernity and modern art."—Berin Golonu, Nineteenth-Century Art Worldwide"This attractive volume addresses the recent scholarly shift from the arts and architecture of the lands of Islam in the early caliphates of the Umayyads and Abbasids through the pre-modern Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal dynasties to modern and contemporary times. An introduction by Graves (Indiana Univ.) and Seggerman (Rutgers Univ., Newark) is followed by 11 essays focused on the different ways in which artists, artisans, and patrons in the Mediterranean lands from Morocco to Egypt and the Ottoman Empire in the 19th and 20th centuries engaged with European modernity and the colonial enterprise. The essays are roughly grouped around three topics: the introduction of photography and printing with movable type, new modes of craft production, and transportation by steamship and railroad. As with all such collections, the essays are uneven; some are unexpectedly fascinating—for example those on the exchange of photographic albums between the Ottoman sultan and the University of Pennsylvania to foster archaeological projects, the celebrations surrounding the opening of the Suez Canal, the introduction of Krupps' steel I-beam to Istanbul—but others are laden with academic jargon. Book SynopsisBuildings and construction are a major contributor to the climate and biodiversity emergency. They account for nearly 40% of energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. It is more important than ever for architects to design responsibly and create low-carbon, low-energy buildings for a sustainable future. 101 Rules of Thumb sets out the essential elements of low-energy architecture in a fresh, intuitive way. Where ever-changing technology and complex legislation can cloud the designer’s thought-process, this book equips you with the fundamentals you need to minimise CO2 emissions, design for low-energy use and work with, not against, the forces of nature. With reliable, simple rules of thumb, each page focuses on a single piece of guidance along with a clear hand-drawn illustration. The emphasis is on passive low-energy principles, and the rules of thumb cover all the design fundamentals from site and location to orientation and form, peppered with ideas to help the designer think outside the box, drawing inspiration from traditional methods, photoperiodic plants, and the black-tailed prairie dog. An extended, fully updated narrative bibliography explores the sources in detail and provides a valuable springboard for further study.Applicable throughout the world in any climate region, 101 Rules of Thumb is a global primer to be dipped into at any time as a quick means of re-focusing on what’s important when designing a new or retrofitted low-energy building. The rules cover:• Site and location• Orientation and form• The low-energy building envelope• Carbon free heating, cooling and lighting• Passive low-energy principlesTable of ContentsPreface Introduction Chapter 1. Book SynopsisDesigning Coffee Shops and Cafés for Community brings together research, theory, and practical applications for designing coffee shops and cafes as places to enhance community connections. As people search for meaning and connection in their lives, they often seek out places that root them in their community. Designers are responsible for creating these spaces, and to do so well, they need to understand the physical and social attributes that make such spaces successful.Addressing societal trends, environment and behavior theories, place attachment, branding, authenticity, location, layout, and ambiance, the book provides guidelines to help designers and operators create more welcoming third placesplaces that are not home, not work, but those where we can relax in the company of others. It includes eight case studies by authors from threecountries that ground the theories in real-life third places. Its practical design guidelines cover location, accessibility, seatinTrade Review'This evidence-based application of ‘third place’ research is timely and long overdue. Equally important is the discussion of human behavior/environment theories, which is a hidden gem in this book. This is a pioneering effort to base design solutions on recognized, reputable theories. Designers and design students now have a visible path to applying theory to a specific space, third places, which makes it translatable to applying theory in their design process for any building type. This is a phenomenal addition to the body of knowledge!' - Denise A. Guerin, University of Minnesota, Ada Comstock Distinguished Women’s Scholar, Morse-Alumni Distinguished Professor'Designing Coffee Shops and Cafes for Community is a well-sourced reference that brings both theory and practical application to bear for restauranteurs, researchers, students and the public. It is highly readable and demystifies the complexities of creating gathering places where people truly want to be. In this time of growing public alienation and widespread retreat to our isolated communities, it is a book we need at this moment, showing how places that are thoughtfully designed do not exist alongside human experience—they set the scene and make possible those moments.' - Jill Pable, Florida State University'As a designer of community and restaurant interiors, (and a frequenter of coffee shops!) I wholeheartedly appreciate and enjoyed this inspired and holistic study of the coffee shop as a community space typology, and of interior design’s important role in shaping these spaces. Filled with relevant research-based analysis and practical case study examples, the book beautifully captures the essence of the human experience at a cafe, and explores how design can transform and create an inclusive, positive experience for the community. Book SynopsisThis book provides the means for a better control and purposeful consideration of the design of Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel (AESS). It deploys a detailed categorization of AESS and its uses according to design context, building typology and visual exposure. In a rare combination, this approach makes high quality benchmarks compatible with economies in terms of material use, fabrication methods, workforce and cost. Building with exposed steel has become more and more popular worldwide, also as advances in fire safety technology have permitted its use for building tasks under stringent fire regulations. On her background of long standing as a teacher in architectural steel design affiliated with many institutions, the author ranks among the world‘s best scholars on this topic. Among the fields covered by the extensive approach of this book are the characteristics of the various categories of AESS, the interrelatedness of design, fabrication and erection of the steel structures, issues of coating and protection (including corrosion and fire protection), special materials like weathering steel and stainless steel, the member choices and a connection design checklist. The description draws on many international examples from advanced contemporary architecture, all visited and photographed by the author, among which figure buildings like the Amgen Helix Bridge in Seattle, the Shard Observation Level in London, the New York Times Building and the Arganquela Footbridge.
