Skira Promenade: ...Through the Present Future: City of

Book SynopsisThe past, present, and future of macro-architecture and how it constructs our landscape and ways of living and interacts with new urban spaces. Back in 1999 the Xunta de Galicia called an International Architecture Competition to build the City of Culture of Galicia on Mount Gaiás in Santiago de Compostela. Twelve proposals by renowned national and international architects' studios were initially submitted to this competition for ideas. Out of all these ideas, the final project to be selected for development was the design by Eisenman Architects, as – to quote the Jury – it was, “unique both in concept and plasticity, and exceptionally in tune with the site's location”. After ten years of intensive debate within Galician society and a meticulous building process, the City of Culture of Galicia is now becoming a reality.

BIS Publishers B.V. Eccentric Structures in Architecture

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisStructures which are conceived rationally have an order and logic which do not always fit into real world conditions of the irrational and the unpredictable in architecture. But what if structural ideas were explored as a condition in architecture which challenged the predictable? What if structure were not bound by its rational ethos but instead conceived in alternative approaches relevant to real-world irrationalities? And if the approaches lead to what is possible, then is structural eccentricity a norm or an anomaly in architecture? This book documents a series of design investigations that engage with conditions of shape, change and mutation, giving rise to design propositions dealing with eccentricity in structure. With illustrations and accompanying descriptions of the design process, this book is a useful reference for structural strategies in architecture.

Book SynopsisA visual and historical tour of a unique facet of modern American architectureTrade ReviewHonorable Mention, PSP Awards for Excellence in Professional/Scholarly Publishing, 2002. "Louis Sullivan, strangely enough, is still being discovered. As important as he was, most of the earlier books concentrated on the high points, the popular dramatic photos, and were less rigorously scholarly. Ronald E. Schmitt's documentation in breadth and depth is highly effective. The diaspora of Sullivan's work is finally being addressed." — Ben Weese, Weese Langley Weese Architects, Chicago"This book is the first of its kind and fills a wide gap in our understanding of the architecture of the early twentieth century. It is time to recognize that Louis Sullivan had an even greater influence over a wider area than anyone previously realized. Not only has Ronald E. Schmitt written an interesting book, he has written an important one."— Wilbert R. Hasbrouck, architect and restoration consultant, Chicago "Sullivanesque: Urban Architecture and Ornamentation is a beautifully written and illustrated book, offering a wide variety of new insights. It reveals the extent of Sullivan's influence on American architecture, one that reached far beyond his superb buildings. . . . Effusive praise is due to the author for his wonderful addition to the steadily growing body of terra-cotta literature."— Susan Tunick, author of Terra- Cotta Skyline

Book SynopsisTrade Review"This book, an important and much-needed contribution to the field of Islamic calligraphy, provides a nuanced and complex study of this enigmatic art form by placing it into a transcultural context and examining it from new vantage points. It is stimulating, carefully thought out, and well documented."—Maryam Ekhtiar, Curator of Islamic Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art"Muthanna not only makes a welcome intervention in the larger field of the history of calligraphy, but also highlights the specific practice of mirror writing, which has hitherto received almost no attention. The book brings religion and art together in an innovative and meaningful fashion, and Akın-Kıvanç is to be commended for her courageous pioneering work."—Emine Fetvaci, Boston University"A truly groundbreaking study of a little-understood subject, muthanna (mirror writing) in Arabic script. Although all too often discussed as simple decoration, grounded at least in part by an alleged Islamic prohibition of figural imagery, the author shows that muthanna was, in fact, governed by a complex aesthetic and that its roots go back to inscriptions in Greek, Syriac, Samaritan, and Hebrew. A remarkable work of historical, cross-cultural, and aesthetic scholarship, Professor Akın-Kıvanç's book will doubtless stand as the go-to source for this distinctive, but much misunderstood, subject."—Howard Crane, The Ohio State UniversityTable of ContentsA Note on Transcription and Translation Introduction: Axes Part I: A History of Mirror Writing 1. • Making Modernity in the Islamic Mediterranean

Indiana University Press Making Modernity in the Islamic Mediterranean

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisCovering a range of media and a wide geographical spread, Making Modernity in the Islamic Mediterranean reveals how 19th-century artists in the Middle East and North Africa reckoned with new tools, materials, and tastes from local perspectives.Trade Review"This book is a timely contribution to pressing debates about visual cultures of modernity across the modern Mediterranean. With a geographic diversity reaching from the Ottoman capital across North Africa, the essays in this book address a rich range of themes, from emergent forms of modern historicism to original readings of objects and images that trouble entrenched assumptions about aesthetic value. So too, this book's revisionary perspective makes clear the necessity to address the diversity of visual culture, from painting to photography, from craft work to infrastructure. The collective enterprise of this anthology transforms our understanding of what it meant to be modern across the Islamic Mediterranean."—Mary Roberts, author of Istanbul Exchanges: Ottomans, Orientalists and Nineteenth-Century Visual Culture, University of Sydney"Making Modernity in the Islamic Mediterranean combines a compelling and well-researched range of studies that make a valuable contribution to the pluralization of global modernisms in art history, with a focus on nineteenth-century Islamic art and visual culture. This volume is a welcome addition to the literature of Islamic modernity and modern art."—Berin Golonu, Nineteenth-Century Art Worldwide"This attractive volume addresses the recent scholarly shift from the arts and architecture of the lands of Islam in the early caliphates of the Umayyads and Abbasids through the pre-modern Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal dynasties to modern and contemporary times. An introduction by Graves (Indiana Univ.) and Seggerman (Rutgers Univ., Newark) is followed by 11 essays focused on the different ways in which artists, artisans, and patrons in the Mediterranean lands from Morocco to Egypt and the Ottoman Empire in the 19th and 20th centuries engaged with European modernity and the colonial enterprise. The essays are roughly grouped around three topics: the introduction of photography and printing with movable type, new modes of craft production, and transportation by steamship and railroad. As with all such collections, the essays are uneven; some are unexpectedly fascinating—for example those on the exchange of photographic albums between the Ottoman sultan and the University of Pennsylvania to foster archaeological projects, the celebrations surrounding the opening of the Suez Canal, the introduction of Krupps' steel I-beam to Istanbul—but others are laden with academic jargon. Book SynopsisSpotlighting innovative design projects in places ranging from Texas to Italy and China, this book sounds a call for architects, designers, and regional planners to create a built environment that works on a regional scale in harmony with the planet's ecoTrade ReviewThe strengths of Design for a Vulnerable Planet lie with its engaging, diverse, and reflective narrative. Steiner draws on decades of firsthand experience and knowledge of the architecture, landscape architecture, and planning fields. The chapters are (mostly) short and readable, and they provide a breadth of views on design and a variety of scales of action…. The book contributes to our understanding of the process and product of ecological and regional design, particularly in Texas, and the dynamics and challenges of projects that increase sustainability. It also enhances the foundation and awareness of the new regionalism and landscape urbanism and bridges design disciplines, providing an inside view of how the groups can—and do—work together toward the same goal of sustainable design. • Concrete From Archeology to Invention 17001769

Taylor & Francis Ltd Concrete From Archeology to Invention 17001769

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisThe reemergence in the early eighteenth century of the technology and use of concrete provide the starting point for this first volume of the Treatise on Concrete. In this book are described and analyzed, for the first time, the various contributions that led to the rediscovery of concrete made by the specialists of the period, from chemists to volcanologists; from engineers to architects and construction workers; from inventors to archaeologists and even men of letters. The book traces the various criteria for concrete production using local materials, from hydraulic lime to pozzolana and trass, as well as how the technique of casting concrete in formwork developed from construction-site practices that had survived locally from the times of ancient Rome. The subjects of the book include the transport of Roman pozzolana with which Italian, French, English or Danish engineers built grandiose offshore concrete structures; the genealogy of techniques for manufacturing wood formwork for foundations at sea, in rivers and above ground; the description of the various formwork systems invented to pour concrete in water; the research conducted by chemists on lime and pozzolana that led to the development of concrete; the invention of artificial stone, obtained using various types of cement; and the series of fantastic archaeological findings about the concrete structures of antiquity, which, even if sometimes baseless, nevertheless helped build confidence that this material could be invented. Finally, several great personalities in the history of architecture, such as Piranesi or Soufflot, are presented in a new light and are shown to be vital players in the affirmation of concrete in the eighteenth century. Thus emerges the first entry of a new history of concrete, one that will provide the essential principles needed to understand how the manufacturing methods discovered between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century emerged and led to the production of this mythical material. This new history of concrete is clearly of present-day interest, specifically in the context of recent research which aims to encourage concrete production using local materials, including volcanic constituents such as pozzolana exactly as it was fabricated during the eighteenth century.Table of ContentsChapter one. • Protoarchitecture

John Wiley & Sons Inc Protoarchitecture

Book SynopsisThe illusive and uncertain world of translating ideas into matter is a negotiation between the ideal and the real and a central preoccupation of architectural production. By invading the toolbox of digital fabrication, design has transgressed into protocols of manufacturing previously the domain of other disciplines and skills sets. Craft, assembly and installation, once the realm of trades, are qualities that are now dependent upon design information and its status as an instruction to make. The ensuing loop between the physical and tactile, the imaginary and speculative, has defined a new expectation in making architecture as a construct that is part real, part ideal. With contributions from Lebbeus Woods, Evan Douglis, Theo Jansen, Shin Egashira and many more, Protoarchitecture presents an explicitly diverse collection of works from leading and emerging practitioners, educators, researchers and visionaries from all corners of this innovative field.Table of Contents4 Editorial Helen Castle 6 Introduction Protoarchitecture: Between the Analogue and the Digital Bob Sheil 12 The Wonder of Trivial Machines Stephen Gage 22 Strandbeests Theo Jansen 28 Drawn into Space: Zaha Hadid Lebbeus Woods 36 Convoluted Flesh: A Synthetic Approach to Analogue and Digital Architecture Marjan Colletti and Marcos Cruz 44 The Memory of an Elephant Bob Sheil 50 Thinking with Matter Mark West 56 Prosthetic Mythologies Kate Davies and Emmanuel Vercruysse 62 Flora_Flex: In Search of Synthetic Immortality Evan Douglis 70 Screens Niall McLaughlin 80 Out of the Phase: Making an Approach to Architecture and Landscape Mark Smout and Laura Allen 86 Objects after Image Shin Egashira 92 Robotic Membranes: Exploring a Textile Architecture of Behaviour Mette Ramsgard Thomsen 98 Mapping the Invisible Landscape: An Exercise in Spatially Choreographed Sound Paul Bavister 106+ Interior Eye Well-MADE New York City Apartments Jayne Merkel 112+ Building Profile Shoreditch Roof Apartment David Littlefield 116+ Practice Profile Jamie Fobert Architects: Inside Out Howard Watson 122+ Userscape Inhabiting the Body and the Spaces of Interaction Valentina Croci 126+ Unit Factor Can Architectural Design Be Research?
