    10 in stock

Book SynopsisHow making models allows us to recall what was and to discover what still might be Whether looking inward to the intricacies of human anatomy or outward to the furthest recesses of the universe, expanding the boundaries of human inquiry depends to a surprisingly large degree on the making of models. In this wide-ranging volume, scholars from diverse fields examine the interrelationships between a model’s material foundations and the otherwise invisible things it gestures toward, underscoring the pivotal role of models in understanding and shaping the world around us. Whether in the form of reproductions, interpretive processes, or constitutive tools, models may bridge the gap between the tangible and the abstract.By focusing on the material aspects of models, including the digital ones that would seem to displace their analogue forebears, these insightful essays ground modeling as a tactile and emphatically humanistic endeavor. With contributions from scholars in the history of science and technology, visual studies, musicology, literary studies, and material culture, this book demonstrates that models serve as invaluable tools across every field of cultural development, both historically and in the present day.Modelwork is unique in calling attention to modeling’s duality, a dynamic exchange between imagination and matter. This singular publication shows us how models shape our ability to ascertain the surrounding world and to find new ways to transform it. • Of the Soil: Photographs of Vernacular

University of Arkansas Press Of the Soil: Photographs of Vernacular

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn 1980, photographer Geoff Winningham and architect Cyrus Sutherland travelled extensively throughout Arkansas to locate and photograph examples of southern American vernacular architecture. They were working on a commission from the First Federal Savings and Loan of Arkansas, and after a year they had finished their project. But, with their interest piqued and enjoying their collaboration, they continued on with the project in hopes of amassing a collection of photographs of vernacular architecture from every region of the state. For two more years, Sutherland continued helping Winningham find every possible “dogtrot house, wood frame church, octagonal barn, and one-of-a-kind hog house” in the state. By 1983 Winningham had photographed over three thousand structures, and the architect and photographer put the collection aside and moved on to other projects.Three decades later, after Sutherland had died, Winningham reopened his archive of Arkansas photographs, found his interest rekindled, and decided to return to the sites of the structures he had photographed. Most of the buildings, he discovered, had disappeared due to fires, storms, or neglect. But while Winningham was unable to find many of the structures he had photographed, what he did find were local people who remembered them. The stories of these local people join the original photographs in Of the Soil in a remarkable fusion that shows us much about the culture of the American South.

RIBA Publishing New Design for Old Buildings

Book SynopsisShowcasing a range of homes, churches, barns, commercial, and industrial buildings from across the UK, this book demonstrates the SPAB philosophy that good new architecture can sit happily alongside old and is preferable to pastiche. Building on the experience of professionals in the historic environment, the authors explore the approach, the design process, the material palette and technical considerations in creating enduring, sustainable buildings. It has never been more important to understand how old buildings can be adapted to make them useful and sustainable in the future. “Good conservation demands a clear and rigorous contemporary approach for new work just as much as it requires delicacy and respect in dealing with the past. In this book, Roger and Iain skilfully guide us through the work of some of the best examples, their erudition underscored by a deep understanding of conservation theory and principles.” Kevin McCloudTable of ContentsForeword by Kevin McCloud Advisory note Historic environment consents Preface Featured buildings Introduction Chapter 1. • The Urban Block: A Guide for Urban Designers,

RIBA Publishing The Urban Block: A Guide for Urban Designers,

Book SynopsisThe block is no more than the land and building area defined by streets. It is the nature of the interface between the two, which has a critical impact on the quality of the spaces between those buildings. The importance of the block to city life is well rehearsed, and in any case, we seldom find ourselves in the business of making cities from scratch. But we are in the business of making new houses, neighbourhoods and new local centres, and we need lots of them: 250,000 a year to be imprecise. Against the background of a burgeoning housing shortage in the UK, there are varied issues to be reconciled. The Urban Block charts the fall and rise of the perimeter block as the staple of urban form and structure from ancient times. It takes you through the process of understanding, defining, structuring and designing the block. Carefully selected urban and suburban case examples explain “do's and don'ts” of good block layout and will help you to produce better masterplans, while staying in touch with commercial realities. This is an essential guide for urban designers, masterplanners and architects that will allow you to produce quality streetscapes in a contemporary context.Table of Contents0. It takes a critical look at the history, present, and future transformation of this significant building typology that has recently emerged as a redefined community place, social condenser, and urban incubator for knowledge generation, storage, and sharing. In particular, the library has evolved as a vibrant and vital member of community development and as a basis for outreach efforts. This book presents 40 recent public and academic libraries from around the world, with over 200 images. As the survey of precedents shows, the historical cases have informed the design of the recent libraries and the continuous development of the building type over time. 5 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book contains a unique collection of various perspectives on the relationship between structures and the forms and spaces of architecture. As such it provides students and professionals alike with an essential sourcebook that can be mined for visual inspiration as well as for textually rich and authoritative insight into the links between structure, architecture, and cultural context. The chapters address fundamental structural elements and systems: columns, walls, beams, trusses, frames, tensile structures, arches, domes and shells. Each chapter is subdivided into two parts:â The essays â introduce the chapters with the reprinting of a curated set of essays and excerpts by various authors that uniquely address how particular structural elements or systems relate in essential fashion to architectural design concepts.â The model studies â physical models of the overall structural systems of several notable contemporary buildings from Europe, North and South America, Africa and Asia are illustrated with large photographs, detail close-ups, and views of their external forms and internal spaces that establish the exceptional qualities of these projects in connecting structural form to architectural design objectives. Mosaic layouts complete the chapters with a collection of photographs of yet more models whose particular details and unique features serve to extend the visual repertoire of the structural type being considered. The combination, juxtaposition and mutual positive reinforcement of these two collections, one largely textual and the other image based, provides the reader with unique and multifaceted insights into how structural forms and systems can be related to architectural design intentions. Conveyed by a strong and deliberate graphical design format, this assembly of materials gets to the very essence of structures within the context of architecture, and will inspire students and practitioners alike to make strategic design decisions for their own projects.Trade Review"Some books are treasure troves – ensembles of deep human experiential research – which need to be kept close to hand. This book is one such treasure. The combination of selected texts with the constructed models becomes the thoughtfully constructed intellectual structure within which to navigate these essential topics." - Yvonne Farrell + Shelley McNamara, Grafton Architects"During the past decades, architecture has been dominated by an interest in expressive singular forms, often facilitated by computerized design and methods of calculation, novel material technologies, and robotic methods of production. The book Model Perspectives: Structure, Architecture and Culture returns architectural thinking back to its tectonic principles and elementary syntax. It also emphasizes the essential cultural connectedness of the art of building; architectural meaning cannot be invented, as it is bound to reflect the human existential and mental reality. All true architectural meaning echoes tradition, and the most radical artistic innovations become part of this esteemed continuum of tradition." - Juhani Pallasmaa, architect, writer, professor emeritus, Helsinki University of Technology (Aalto University, School of Art, Design and Architecture), FinlandTable of Contents1. • Ugo Luccichenti's Trionfale Villa in Rome

Ilios Editore Ugo Luccichenti's Trionfale Villa in Rome

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe "villino", planned in the northern Rome among 1953 and 1959, is a singular building. It can be shortly described as a volume cutted horizontally by an open air floor that generate two solids connected by a couple of stairs that, in a "constructivist" act, climb the sky to form a wide terrace -with a great view on Rome- whose function is connected to only one flat. Luccichenti, thanks to this actions (the cut, the stairs, the terrace), is able to superimpose two autonomous blocks in one only building. This typological hybridization between palace and villa in one building make complete an experiment that many architects, even nowadays, are not able to lead. This sophisticated compositive mechanism is in its sharp "lecture": the path that leads from the first idea to the final construction of the "villino Trionfale" keeps more than 5 years. If 5 years seems a short time to a contemporary Italian architect, it was a very long period in the fifties, that I like to attribute to the deep theory work by Luccichenti.

Book SynopsisTypology 2 follows up on the preceding and successful Typology, published in 2012. Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein together with their teaching staff and students at ETH Zurich expanded their research on building typology to four more metropolises, again in Europe, Latin America, and Asia: Paris, Delhi, Sao Paulo, and Athens. 180 buildings were analysed over the past two years to find inspiration and models that can be adapted for the local context of any given city. Each example is documented with an image, site and floor plans, axonometric projection, key data, and a brief description. An introduction and four essays on the interaction between various protagonists and in particular the effect of governing local building regulation again show the potential for contemporary urban architecture. The result is again a rich sourcebook of great practical value for students, lecturers and practitioners of architecture. Essays by the authors, and Anupam Bansal and Philippe Simon.Table of ContentsEmanuel Christ, born 1970, graduated from ETH Zurich in 1998 and is one of the principals of Basel-based Christ & Gantenbein Architetcs. Book SynopsisDesigning Coffee Shops and Cafés for Community brings together research, theory, and practical applications for designing coffee shops and cafes as places to enhance community connections. As people search for meaning and connection in their lives, they often seek out places that root them in their community. Designers are responsible for creating these spaces, and to do so well, they need to understand the physical and social attributes that make such spaces successful.Addressing societal trends, environment and behavior theories, place attachment, branding, authenticity, location, layout, and ambiance, the book provides guidelines to help designers and operators create more welcoming third placesplaces that are not home, not work, but those where we can relax in the company of others. It includes eight case studies by authors from threecountries that ground the theories in real-life third places. Its practical design guidelines cover location, accessibility, seatinTrade Review'This evidence-based application of ‘third place’ research is timely and long overdue. Equally important is the discussion of human behavior/environment theories, which is a hidden gem in this book. This is a pioneering effort to base design solutions on recognized, reputable theories. Designers and design students now have a visible path to applying theory to a specific space, third places, which makes it translatable to applying theory in their design process for any building type. This is a phenomenal addition to the body of knowledge!' - Denise A. Guerin, University of Minnesota, Ada Comstock Distinguished Women’s Scholar, Morse-Alumni Distinguished Professor'Designing Coffee Shops and Cafes for Community is a well-sourced reference that brings both theory and practical application to bear for restauranteurs, researchers, students and the public. It is highly readable and demystifies the complexities of creating gathering places where people truly want to be. In this time of growing public alienation and widespread retreat to our isolated communities, it is a book we need at this moment, showing how places that are thoughtfully designed do not exist alongside human experience—they set the scene and make possible those moments.' - Jill Pable, Florida State University'As a designer of community and restaurant interiors, (and a frequenter of coffee shops!) I wholeheartedly appreciate and enjoyed this inspired and holistic study of the coffee shop as a community space typology, and of interior design’s important role in shaping these spaces. Edition Axel Menges John Fowler, Benjamin Baker, Forth Bridge: Opus

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisWhen the Forth Bridge opened on 4 March 1890, it was the longest railway bridge in the world and the first large structure made of steel. Crossing the wide Firth of Forth west of Edinburgh in Scotland, it represents one of the greatest engineering triumphs of Victorian Britain, man's victory over the intractable topography of land and water. Not surprisingly, such a vigorous rebuff of the natural order was condemned at the time by those late Victorians who resisted the march of technology, and William Morris described the Bridge as the "supremest specimen of all ugliness". In response, Benjamin Baker insisted that its beauty lay in its functional elegance. Contrasting the bridge with the only comparable structure of the period, the Eiffel Tower, he concluded: "The Eiffel Tower is a foolish piece of work, ugly, ill-proportioned and of no real use to anyone." But the beauty and fascination of the Forth Bridge lies not simply in its functional performance, but in its scale and power. Over a mile long and higher than the dome of St. Peter's in Rome, it rivals the natural phenomena that the philosophers of the 18th century identified as sources of sublime beauty. Immanuel Kant pointed to hurricanes, boundless oceans and high waterfalls as objects of sublime contemplation, "because they raise the forces of the soul above the heights of the vulgar commonplace, and discover within us a power of resistance of quite another kind, which gives us courage to be able to measure ourselves against the seeming omnipotence of nature". In the 19th century the awe-inspiring feats of nature were rivalled by the inventions of the engineers, and the thrill of the waterfall or the lightning flash was eclipsed by the sight of the roaring locomotive dashing across the majestic span of the Forth Bridge.Table of ContentsChapter 1 The Neighbor Nation a historical and geography overview of the countryChapter 2 A Walk in Time Ethan and his young friend take a walking tour of Mexico CityChapter 3 Magic in Mexico Visits to national wonders the butterfly forest of Rosario and the floating gardens of Xochimilco, which lead to ecological and environmental discussions and activitiesChapter 4 The Past is the Present A trip to two ancient civilization sites of Teotihaucan and the Mayan Chichen Itza ruinsChapter 5 Coast to Coast A fun overview of the different coastal cultures in Mexico as our soccer players continue on a trip to the Maya Riviera and CozumelChapter 6 Sport Si! • Georgian and Regency Conservatories: History,

Historic England Georgian and Regency Conservatories: History,

Book SynopsisConservatories emerged in the early 19th century as a result of an increased interest in horticulture as well as developments in glass and iron manufacture, and in methods of heating. These technical innovations led to a new type of glasshouse with greater levels of light and more efficiently regulated heat, rendering them more equipped to house permanent displays of plants and flowers. Conservatories thus became a more agreeable place in which to spend time and so they began to be attached to the house in order to be used as a social space. Drawing on contemporary architects’ plans, horticultural publications, diaries and memoirs, this book shows how and why conservatories emerged in the form they did, and explores what they were like inside and how they were used by their owners. The second part of the book focuses on how various elements of conservatories may be conserved. This section examines the ways in which the materials and components of these often forgotten, but nonetheless architecturally and culturally significant structures, have deteriorated, as well as the various methods and approaches used in their conservation. Divided into five sections, specific case studies highlight practical approaches to the conservation and repair of metalwork, glazing, woodwork and surface coatings, as well as the importance of recording and storage. This study will offer practical guidance for practitioners, architects, owners, and those involved in the heritage industry. Trade ReviewReviews'Packed with architects’ plans and early photographs, as well as drawing on contemporary diaries and memoirs, this book serves a dual purpose: it shows how and why conservatories were built and used before going on to discuss their conservation in technical detail. Book SynopsisWhen Thomas Mawson published his autobiography in1927 he was looking back over a 50 year career as a landscape architect, a reflection he found 'most congenial'. It is a story that charts not only his life, but also the development of his chosen profession as a creative art. Beginning with a 'passion for the arts' and practical experience of garden-making, architecture and forestry, he set out to contribute with others to 'a revival of intelligent and scholarly garden design'. He cites his luck in finding 'appreciative clients' and skilled assistants, as well as in moving in the right academic, business and government circles across the world. From private gardens to public parks and city planning, with details of many prospects and commissions - early Parks at Hanley and Burslem, gardens in Scotland and England during his collaboration with Dan Gibson in the late 1890s, friendship with and work for Lord Leverhulme, the replanning in 1917 of both Salonika and Stepney, schemes for industrial villages in Britain - there are too many to list. It is a story full of lively descriptions in which working and management methods, plans, lecture tours, writing, colleagues, friends and clients sit alongside glimpses of family and social life. Throughout, Mawson uses as reference his own hugely successful The Art and Craft of Garden Making, also available in the Viridarium Library of Garden Classics.

    Park Books Portraits: Architectural Parables

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIt may sound banal, yet it is a fundamental fact in architectural design: All ideas are based on previous ideas, their imitation, inversion, rejection, or adaptation; or on their reinterpretation or ignoration. The same applies to our visual perception and how it influences our thinking and world of ideas. It is actually true for any kind of creation and design. Portraits: Architectural Parables traces these questions through a wealth of images from art history and everyday culture, as well as through analytical and classifying texts. With this book, François Charbonnet and Patrick Heiz, the founding partners of the highly acclaimed Swiss design firm Made in, reveal the approaches they take in their design methodology as well as in their teaching at ETH Zurich’s Department of Architecture and Accademia di architettura in Mendrisio. The distinctive feature lies in the linking and collaging of mutually illuminating, yet apparently antagonistic, programs. Made in’s method does not claim historical accuracy, as sources and facts are intentionally collaged to serve a reductive purpose. The focus is on the potential they see in the cross-fertilisation of different images and ideas rather than on a single, all-embracing model of thought.

Book SynopsisThis book traces cultural landscape as the manifestation of the state and national community under the Nazi regime, and how the Nazi era produced what could be referred to as a totalitarian cultural landscape. For the Nazi regime, cultural landscape was indeed a heritage resource, but it was much more than that: cultural landscape was the nation. The project of Nazi racial purification and cultural renewal demanded the physical reshaping and reconceptualization of the existing environment to create the so-called new Nazi cultural landscape. One of the most important components of this was a set of monumental sites thought to embody blood and soil beliefs through the harmonious synthesis of architecture and landscape. This special group of landscape-bound architectural complexes was interconnected by the new autobahn highway system, itself thought to be a monumental work embedded in nature. Behind this intentionally aestheticized view of the nation as cultural landscape lay the all-pervasive system of deception and violence that characterized the emerging totalitarian state. This is the first historical study to consider the importance of these monumental sites together with the autobahn as evidence of key Nazi cultural and geographic strategies during the pre-war years. This book concludes by examining racial and nationalistic themes underlying cultural landscape concepts today, against this historic background.Trade Review"The formal power of buildings in Nazi Germany has tended to focus historical attention upon the architecture at the expense of understanding the larger sites in which they were located. In this fascinating account, Haney forensically examines a range of ‘cultural landscapes’ each conceived to express an aspect of Nazi mythology."Professor Murray Fraser, The Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London"This meticulously researched book alerts us to the geopolitical underpinnings of the National Socialist cultural landscape. Book SynopsisDesign methodology in architecture and design has changed significantly over the last ten years, taking on major significance. More than ever, graphic attributes are used in contemporary architecture. A number of these new design methods and applications emerged through the use of digital media, leading to a paradigm shift in the way we design. BIS Publishers has already showcased these new design methods in a series of small books on form experiments in architecture and design, such as Folding Architecture and Supersurfaces (Vyzoviti) and Modular Structures (Agkatidis), but no comprehensive book on the topic had been published until now. Inspiration: Contemporary Design Methods in Architecture is a comprehensive compilation of work samples and ideas on design and gestalt, illustrations and graphic configurations, textures and structures, as well as form and spatial development. This book features more than 800 examples of abstract compositions that relate to architectural design methods and principles. These methodologies find their ground in the work of contemporary architectural design practice, while still being highly applicable to other related creative fields. Inspiration showcases hundreds of examples, models, sketches, and renderings of abstract architectural design applications. In addition to this substantial body of visual work, the book also documents and details the generative process and production of these design creations.

Book SynopsisThe Future of Modular Architecture presents an unprecedented proposal for mass-customized mid- and high-rise modular housing that can be manufactured and distributed on a global scale. Advocating for the adoption of open-source design based on a new modular standard, the book shows how the construction industry and architectural practice may soon be radically reshaped. By leveraging the existing intermodal freight transport system, global supply chains can be harnessed to realize the long-held promise that housing will be a well-designed and affordable industrial product. We are on the cusp of a transformative change in the way we design and build our cities.Author David Wallance argues that modular architecture is profoundly intertwined with globalization, equitable urbanism, and sustainable development. His book addresses these timely issues through a specific approach grounded in fundamental concepts. Going beyond the individual modular building, Wallance forecastTrade Review"David Wallance’s work in intermodal modular architecture opens a future for sustainable, less expensive and factory-perfect buildings going well beyond the building typologies typically associated with pre-built structures. Since the introduction of curtain wall design nearly 70 years ago, building construction methods have changed little and remain profoundly inefficient in comparison with the enormous technical progress made in other areas of goods production. David’s comprehensive exploration of modular design confronts systemic anachronisms that are deeply intrenched in the construction industry and forces consideration of why it is that we continue to tolerate them."Daniel Alpert, Founding Managing Partner and Chief Economist, Westwood Capital, LLC, Author of The Age of Oversupply: Overcoming the Greatest Challenge to the Global EconomyTable of ContentsPART 1 1. • Health, Safety and Hygiene in Indoor Environments

Nova Science Publishers Inc Health, Safety and Hygiene in Indoor Environments

Book SynopsisIndoor air quality and human health are of continuously growing importance. Indoor air quality may be affected by many factors excluding, but not limited to, more loosely sealed buildings, the use of air purifiers and other pollutant sources (for example, room air fresheners), the use of various chemicals for pesticide management and cleaning, and finally, the use of synthetic building materials and furnishings. In recent years, people have become more aware of potential health and comfort problems that may be associated with poor indoor air quality. It is partly due to the move to more tightly sealed buildings, the implementation of energy conservation programs, and the growing use of laser printers, photocopiers, and other sources of indoor air contamination. Greater general awareness of environmental issues may also play a part. Most IAQ complaints from building occupants are related to a respiratory headache, irritation, odours, or fatigue. These concerns may be associated with chemical vapours, dust generated in the work environment, contaminants associated with fungal growth (mould), materials infiltrating from outside sources (such as pollen or engine exhaust), or other factors such as elevated carbon dioxide levels. This handbook aims to turn the attention to these subjects and to promote methods and technologies to reduce poor indoor air quality and to distribute outdoor air throughout the building, remove contaminants and odours, and control the indoor temperature and humidity. The information in this guide will help to maintain good indoor air quality in a building, prevent indoor air quality problems, and correct issues that may arise. It will also help to understand the indoor air quality requirements. The structure of this text allows for flexibility in course content and design. It may be used equally well either as a textbook for students or a handbook for environmental consultants, mechanical engineers, building occupants, labour unions and suppliers. Furthermore, this text may be useful data for either the undergraduate or the graduate level. The author wishes to acknowledge Nova Science Publishers with special mentions to Nadya S Gotsiridze-Columbus and Carra Feagaiga for their editorial support.Table of ContentsFor more information, please visit our website at:https://novapublishers.com/shop/healthy-safety-and-hygiene-at-buildings-environment/
