Book SynopsisFire safety is a fundamental requirement of any building, and is of concern to several professions which contribute to the construction process. Following on from the success of the previous three editions, Paul Stollard has returned to update and expand this classic introduction to the theoretical basis of fire-safety engineering and risk assessment. Avoiding complex calculations and specifications, Fire From First Principles is written with architects, building control officers and other construction professionals without fire engineering backgrounds in mind. By tackling an overview of the factors which contribute to fire risk, and how building design can limit these, the reader will gain a fuller understanding of the science behind fire regulations, safe design, and construction solutions. • Designing and Constructing Prestressed Bridges

Emerald Publishing Limited Designing and Constructing Prestressed Bridges

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisDesigning and Constructing Prestressed Bridges focuses on troubleshooting the problems that are connected with finding the correct structural solution of bridges, the methods of their construction and the corresponding arrangement of prestressing steel.Trade ReviewThis book covers all aspects of the design and construction of prestressed concrete bridges in a comprehensive and systematic way. The various concepts are illustrated by an abundance of real projects, many of them elegantly designed by the first author in a structurally efficient way but also aesthetically pleasing. The book offers both theoretical concepts and practical insights, and ample attention is paid to environmental and architectural aspects. I can strongly recommend this splendid handbook to both bridge designers and practitioners involved in bridge construction. Of course, everybody interested in prestressed concrete will enjoy reading this nicely illustrated book. -- Luc R TaerweFor any engineer engaged in prestressed bridge design or construction this is a valuable reference, irrespective of previous knowledge or experience. Including some iconic case-studies, the breadth and depth of the subject is covered admirably, with details of every structural form described from the basics of simply supported slabs to the complexities of multi-span viaducts. An essential addition to a bridge engineer’s library. -- Richard Fish, Technical Secretary, Bridge Owners Forum, UKThis book provides a wide range of examples from the simplest precast beam deck right through to the medium and long span concrete bridge structure. It contains the design basis for the various bridge types including the issue of shrinkage and creep. A good book to have in your library and one that you can browse through over a coffee. -- Dr Jeffrey Fisher, Former Technical Director and now a Consultant to Mott MacDonald, UKThis book is a very practical guide for designers containing plenty of insightful case studies. It is extremely useful not only for the early career engineers but also experienced professionals working on prestressed concrete bridges. Chapter 8, focused on curved structures, was the most interesting chapter for me to read as curved bridges are very difficult to design and construct. -- Akio Kasuga, Executive Vice President and CTO of Sumitomo Mitsui Construction, JapanThis voluminous book serves not only as an engineering textbook but also as a design roadmap. It takes readers through the process of prestressed bridge design, from conceptualisation of structural behaviour to static and dynamic analysis of design options to produce aesthetically pleasing structures that seamlessly integrate with the landscape. Overall, the book is an excellent text for the working library of the professional engineer. -- Dian Saunders, Water and Sewerage Corporation, BahamasTable of Contents01. Introduction 02. Book SynopsisPrefabricated corrugated-iron buildings have been manufactured in Britain since the middle of the nineteenth century. Structures ranging from humble cottages to substantial churches, and from halls to hospitals and hotels, have since then been produced, packed and consigned to destinations at home and abroad. Though often regarded as cheap and temporary, these buildings are an expression of a progressive and vital chapter in the history of Britain''s construction industry. First used in 1829, corrugated-iron has become a familiar element in vernacular architecture and construction, bringing its particular character and colour to landscapes both rural and urban. The author draws on a wide range of research to highlight the significance, in Britain and across the world, of these oft-overlooked structures.Table of Contents?Introduction /New Properties /More Than Just a Cottage Industry /Building for a Changing Society /Buildings in Stock /A Kindly Domestic Beast /The Ups and Downs of Iron Sheeting /Further Reading /Places to Visit /Index

Form becomes function not in any useful way, but as a locus of value, forcing signifier and signified together through the raw power of the command: measure this and make this, in this way."—Reinhold Martin, from the Foreword"This timely translation of Pedro Fiori Arantes’s book into English explores the political and aesthetic dilemmas of contemporary architecture practice and theory from an opportune viewpoint. Firstly, it speaks from the South of the globalized world by entering and leaving conventional Western discourses. Secondly, it stems out of a little-known yet commanding line of historical-materialist criticism of architecture shaped up in Brazil since the 1970s, especially at the University of São Paulo. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisAll buildings must stand. An adequate structure was as necessary for the simplest primitive hut as it is for the tallest or widest-spanning modern building. However, this requirement became more difficult to satisfy as designers became more adventurous and the experience already gained became less directly applicable. The present papers look at the consequent evolution of design methods and the types of understanding that have been essential guides. A particular focus is the question of how earlier innovations, made without the benefits of modern theory, were possible. Other papers look in detail at the most outstanding of these achievements, such as the church of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul and the dome of Florence Cathedral.Trade Review'During 40 years Rowland Mainstone has been a prolific and original writer on developments in the history of architectural structures. This collection of 22 of his papers demonstrates their quality and authority...These papers should help destroy the popular myth that we do not know how cathedrals and great works of antiquity were designed or built...They should be essential reading for everyone engaged in restoring and conserving buildings, and will be equally rewarding for the sheer pleasure of better understanding the enormity of our debt to the technical achievements of past centuries.' Architectural Review '...very readable and has much to interest the practising engineer or anyone with a visual sense and an enquiring mind.' Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings News 'With the depth of research reported, the great wealth of its references, and its illumination of such diverse themes and topics, the book must easily claim space in architectural libraries and provide stimuli for further studies. Significant assistance to the wide variety of studies which can be envisaged is given by the inclusion of three separate indexes, for 'subjects', 'bridges, buildings and places', and 'persons'.' • Architectural Conservation in Asia

Taylor & Francis Ltd Architectural Conservation in Asia

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAt a time when organized heritage protection in Asia is developing at a rapid pace, Architectural Conservation in Asia provides the first comprehensive overview of architectural conservation practice from Afghanistan to the Philippines. The country-by-country analysis adopted by the book draws out local insights, experiences, best practice and solutions for effective cultural heritage management that will inform study and practice both in Asia and beyond.Whereas architectural conservation in much of the Western world has been extensively documented, this book brings together coverage of many regions where architectural conservation has been understudied. Following on from the highly influential companion volumes on global architectural conservation and architectural conservation in Europe and the Americas, with this book the authors extend their pioneering global examination to the dynamic and evolving field of architectural conservation in Asia.Trade Review‘Architectural Conservation in Asia is remarkable in that it is the first book of its kind that provides a systematic and comprehensive overview of architectural conservation not only across geographical and political boundaries, but also across traditional and contemporary built heritage in Asia. In this regard, it is an invaluable reference for students and enthusiasts of architectural conservation, and it provides the necessary foundation for deeper understanding of the topic.' - Ho-Yin Lee, Head of Division of Architectural Conservation Programmes, The University of Hong Kong'The built heritage of Asia is among the oldest, most widespread, and most diverse in the world. But it is also the most endangered. Wars, rapid urbanization, explosive population growth, antiquities thieves, climate change and other challenges are putting at great risk this heritage which belongs not just to Asia, but to humankind. This new book by Stubbs and Thomson is both timely and critical to generate an international demand for the protection of these irreplaceable assets.' - Donovan Rypkema, President, Heritage Strategies International 'This latest contribution on the histories and current challenges of built heritage conservation by John Stubbs, this time partnering with Robert Thomson, is an important contribution to correcting the overemphasis on Europe, which has shaped how we understand conservation and world history in the modern era. A highly ambitious book, Architectural Conservation in Asia provides a unique overview of how the conservation of built heritage has evolved across the region, tackling debates about the materialities of uncomfortable histories, or how ‘Asian approaches’ to conservation intersect with 19th century colonial practices. I am particularly heartened to see chapters on Central Asia, a long overlooked, yet historically significant, region. This is essential reading for anyone interested in both the global and Asian history of conservation.' - Tim Winter, Research Chair in Cultural Heritage, Deakin University, Melbourne'A remarkable achievement. A magnificent guided tour through Asia’s architectural conservation. Following the success of Time Honored: A Global View of Architectural Conservation and Architectural Conservation in Europe and the Americas, this book continues to offer readers an exceptionally wide and valuable perspective, as well as insights into the diverse practices of architectural conservation in Asia. It has achieved this challenging task with confidence and aptitude. This is a go-to book for anyone who wishes to have an overview of Asia’s architectural conservation history.’ - Yeo Kang Shua, Singapore University of Technology and Design'John Stubbs and Robert G. Thompson have done an excellent job summarizing the current state of architectural conservation practice in Asia. Spanning the whole of the Asian landmass and covering twenty-three countries, Architectural Conservation in Asia addresses both past and present practice; the principal issues and concerns; and the current governmental apparatus throughout the region. The authors also include shorter essays, many commissioned by leading figures in the field of conservation, to provide insights on specific details of contemporary practice...The book is extensively illustrated and well supplied with maps providing even uninformed readers with a strong understanding of the range of sites and conservation practices throughout Asia. The third volume in Stubbs’s comprehensive story of conservation practice throughout the world, this last offering is essential reading for anyone interested in heritage and conservation and especially those involved in practice in Asia.' - William Chapman, Professor and Interim Dean, School of Architecture, University of Hawaii at Manoa, New York, USA‘[This book] is the first comprehensive overview of architectural conservation practice in Asia.…[I]t covers Asia country by country from Afghanistan to Japan, illustrating the rich diversity of the continent in terms both of the heritage and the approaches taken to protecting it.…Stubbs and Thomson see the heritage profession evolving from its earlier focus on the questions "how to conserve?" and "what to conserve?" to take in the more complex issues of "for whom?" and "why?".’ - William Logan, Professor Emeritus, Deakin University Table of ContentsForeword A.G. Book SynopsisThis volume explores the concept of spatial transparency; a form of spatial continuity that articulates depth through permeable, layered, or porous three-dimensional organizations where interstitial light is present. Although transparency is a concept largely associated with the modern movement, the use of glazed components, and twentieth-century architectural discourse, spatial transparency is a form of depth awareness through intermediate domains, takes place through the interstitial fabric of a structure, and occurs when several consecutive domains are spatially and visually connected. These immersive environments invite active participation, not as one-way communication but as a series of visual and experiential exchanges, interdependencies, and relationships.Divided into four parts, the book examines spatial transparency in massive opaque constructions, light constructions, glass assemblies, and hybrid systems. Taylor & Francis Ltd Open Building for Architects

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisOpen Building is an internationally recognized approach to the design of buildings and building complexes with roots in the way the ordinary built environment grows and regenerates. The Open Building approach recognizes that both stability and change are realities to be managed in the contemporary built environment. Buildings â and the neighborhoods they occupy â are not static during the most stable times or during times of rapid social and technical change. They are living organisms that need constant adjustments to remain attractive, safe and valuable.Using case studies of built projects from around the world, this book explains the Open Building approach and discusses important characteristics of everyday built environment that the Open Building approach designs for. It also presents a key method that can be used to put the approach into use. It addresses questions such as: How can we design large projects for inevitable change? How can we balance theTrade Review"As early as 1962, John Habraken had discovered that mass housing was based on two incorrect principles: 1) all people want the same thing; and 2) professionals know what is good for them. The reality is that no two people have the same preferences, and their wishes and possibilities are constantly changing. Based on life-time experiences, John and Stephen Kendall discuss in this book the interaction between those people – in their homes, office, schools and healthcare centers – and the built environment and who should decide on it." Frank Bijdendijk, Former Managing Director of the Housing Association Het Oosten (later Stadgemoot), Amsterdam; Founder and President of the National Renovation Platform; Board of Inspiration, Re-Born – Circular Real Estate "This book offers a good opportunity for architects to quickly know what’s happening in Open Building practice in different contexts all over the world. The book reflects the impact the Open Building approach can have on the relationship among architects, developers and occupants in the whole life of buildings. This reflection should inspire and encourage architects to rethink and practice in a more empathic and sustainable perspective." Liu Peng, Chief Architect, Senior Architect, First Grade, Beijing Institute of Architectural Design "This is an extremely useful book that is both theoretical and practical and both for the developed and the developing world. It opens discourses on wicked questions of top-down vs. bottom-up approaches, architecture as a product vs. process, architects’ control over built form, and straddling the past and the future. Book SynopsisThis revised edition of Exercises in Architecture: Learning to Think as an Architect is full of new content, building on the success of the previous edition. All the original exercises have been revised and new ones added, with the format changing to allow the inclusion of more supplementary material. The aim remains the same, to help pre- or early-course architecture students begin and develop their ability to think as architects.Learning to do architecture is tricky. It involves awakening abilities that remain dormant in most people. It is like learning language for the first time; a task made more mystifying by the fact that architecture deals not in words but in places: places to stand, to walk, to sit, to hide, to sleep, to cook, to eat, to work, to play, to worshipThis book was written for those who want to be architects. Book SynopsisThe Built Environment through the Prism of the Colonial Periodical Press is a venture of the International Group for Studies of Colonial Periodical Press of the Portuguese Empire (IGSCP-PE), who are also interested in comparative studies and conceptual discussions. Through a focus on the understudied role of colonial periodicals in the creation and public discussion of colonial built environments, the present book contributes to a cultural history of the idea of built environment. The studies underscore the role of press in articulating environment imaging and transformations with colonial ideologies, projects and policies, and the fixing, othering and disputing of identities, while still retaining the epochal circulation of ideas. This role is evidenced through discussions of forests, clubs, hotels, barracks, hospitals, houses, verandas and gardens, railways, Catholic churches and Hindu templescapes, restorations and exhibitions. Book SynopsisHow are the far-away, invisible landscapes where materials come from related to the highly visible, urban landscapes where those same materials are installed? Reciprocal Landscapes: Stories of Material Movements traces five everyday landscape construction materials fertilizer, stone, steel, trees, and wood from seminal public landscapes in New York City, back to where they came from. Drawing from archival documents, photographs, and field trips, the author brings these two separate landscapes the material's source and the urban site where the material ended up together, exploring themes of unequal ecological exchange, labor, and material flows. Each chapter follows a single material's movement: guano from Peru that landed in Central Park in the 1860s, granite from Maine that paved Broadway in the 1890s, structural steel from Pittsburgh that restructured Riverside Park in the 1930s, London plane street trees grown on Rikers Island by incarcerated workers thatTrade Review"Reciprocal Landscapes shows us what matters about landscape by revealing what matter is doing in it – where it came from, why it was taken, and how it was extracted, worked, fought over, and transported. Book SynopsisThis second edition of Designing Tall Buildings, an accessible reference to guide you through the fundamental principles of designing high-rises, features two new chapters, additional sections, 400 images, project examples, and updated US and international codes. Each chapter focuses on a theme central to tall-building design, giving a comprehensive overview of the related architecture and structural engineering concepts. Author Mark Sarkisian, PE, SE, LEED AP BD+C, provides clear definitions of technical terms and introduces important equations, gradually developing your knowledge. Projects drawn from SOM's vast portfolio of built high-rises, many of which Sarkisian engineered, demonstrate these concepts. This book advises you to consider the influence of a particular site''s geology, wind conditions, and seismicity. Using this contextual knowledge and analysis, you can determine what types of structural solutions are best suited for a tower onTrade Review"Designing Tall Buildings is the best book on structures and architecture available. It appeals to both architects and engineers, capturing the "why" and the "how" of tall building construction. It explains the history of tall buildings and details the structural rationale behind the art. Mark Sarkisian is a brilliant and engaging instructor, bringing structural theory to life. This book is a must-read for all designers." - Mary Comerio, Professor of the Graduate School, UC Berkeley, USA"Designing Tall Buildings is a seminal reference guide that clearly illustrates the inseparability of architecture, structural design, and local context in the realization of tall buildings around the world. As one of SOM’s foremost structural engineering partners and a global thought leader on skyscraper design, Mark Sarkisian is the perfect author to give this message." – Antony Wood, Executive Director, Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, USA"Designing Tall Buildings: Structure as Architecture clearly discusses the roles that structural design and nature play in tall buildings. Book SynopsisGlass has long transformed the architectural landscape. From the Crystal Palace through to the towering glass spires of today's cities, few architectural materials have held such immense symbolic resonance in the modern era. The Age of Glass explores the cultural and technological ascension of glass in modern and contemporary architecture. Showing how the use of glass is driven as much by changing cultural concerns as it is by developments in technology and style, it traces the richly interwoven material, symbolic, and ideological histories of glass to show how it has produced and dispersed meaning in architecture over the past two centuries. The book's chapters focus on key moments within the modern history of architecture, moments when glass came to the forefront of architectural thought, and which illustrate how glass has been used at different times to project different cultural ideas. Book SynopsisInterweaving architecture, philosophy and cultural history, Materials and Meaning in Architecture develops a rich and multi-dimensional exploration of materials and materiality, in an age when architectural practice seems otherwise preoccupied with image and visual representation. Arguing that architecture is primarily experienced by the whole body, rather than chiefly with the eyes, this broad-ranging study shows how the most engaging built works are as tactile as they are sensuous, communicating directly with the bodily senses, especially touch. It explores the theme of material imagination' and the power of establishing place identity' in an architect's work, to consider the enduring expressive possibilities of material use in architecture. The book's chapters can be dipped into, each individual chapter providing close readings of built works by selected modern masters (Scarpa, Zumthor, Williams and Tsien), insights into key texts and theories (Ruskin, Loos, Bachelard), or shTrade ReviewWe have always felt that interpretation of architecture is best left to others and perhaps best done posthumously! • Structures of Coastal Resilience

Island Press Structures of Coastal Resilience

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisStructures of Coastal Resilience presents new strategies for creative and collaborative approaches to coastal planning for climate change. In the face of sea level rise and an increased risk of flooding from storm surge, we must become less dependent on traditional approaches to flood control that have relied on levees, sea walls, and other forms of hard infrastructure. But what are alternative approaches for designers and planners facing the significant challenge of strengthening their communities to adapt to uncertain climate futures? Authors Catherine Seavitt Nordenson, Guy Nordenson, and Julia Chapman have been at the forefront of research on new approaches to effective coastal resilience planning for over a decade. In Structures of Coastal Resilience, they reimagine how coastal planning might better serve communities grappling with a future of uncertain environmental change. They encourage more creative design techniques at the beginning of the planning process, and offer examples of innovative work incorporating flexible natural systems into traditional infrastructure. They also draw lessons for coastal planning from approaches more commonly applied to fire and seismic engineering. This is essential, they argue, because storms, sea level rise, and other conditions of coastal change will incorporate higher degrees of uncertainty--which have traditionally been part of planning for wildfires and earthquakes, but not floods or storms. This book is for anyone grappling with the immense questions of how to prepare communities to flourish despite unprecedented climate impacts. It offers insights into new approaches to design, engineering, and planning, envisioning adaptive and resilient futures for coastal areas.

Book SynopsisThis book explores, debates and exhibits practices of contemporary architectural drawing, taking at its basis a series of meetings between a cohort of architects, critics and curators who discussed contemporary drawing practices and production in their own work and research. The participants - Laura Allen, Bryan Cantley, Nat Chard, Peter Cook, Mark Dorrian, Riet Eeckhout, Adrian Hawker, Perry Kulper, CJ Lim, Shaun Murray, Mark Smout, Neil Spiller, Natalija Subotincic, Michael Webb, Mark West and Michael Young - focused on drawings or drawing-related artefacts, around which dialogues took place. Beyond the usual representational imperatives of architecture drawing, the group considered and discussed its agency as a site of emergence and imagination. Organised in relation to specific topics and framed by contextual essays by Nat Chard, Mark Dorrian, Riet Eeckhout, Michael Young, Thomas-Bernard Kenniff and Carole Levesque, the book includes a selection of exquisite and fascinating key drawings by the various contributors, together with edited transcripts of discussions around drawing which developed at the symposia. The drawings presented in the book are in dialogue with one another, while their authors are themselves in extended conversation. This double aspect will make the book a distinctive publication and an enduringly important document and resource for thinking about architectural drawing.Table of ContentsIntroduction. Book SynopsisEvery pier, from the grandest to the most modest, has its own story. In this collection of one hundred beautiful paintings, Paul Tracey combines his skill as a draughtsman with his creative flair as an artist to capture the very essence of these structures and to provide snapshots of their individual stories. Many piers were originally built as wharfs for ships to load and unload goods. Then, as the railways expanded and people were able to travel further afield for trips and holidays, they became destinations in their own right: places to promenade, to meet and to be entertained. Innovative Victorian engineering created piers that could better withstand the vigours of the sea yet still provided elegant spaces to be enjoyed. This historical development was mirrored around the world. Researched and executed over five years, 100 Piers includes historic postcards, concert programmes and newspaper articles about the piers. Many piers are no longer in their prime, some have gone completely, lost to the tides of time. But through the paintings, with their dynamic lines, varying perspectives and bold colour combinations, Tracey successfully captures the vibrancy and vitality of these structures. His work ensures their place in history is not forgotten and that the many piers which remain may continue to be cherished as much as ever.

After the relocation of Hong Kong International Airport from Kowloon Bay to Chek Lap Kok, the relaxation of building height restrictions allowed for skyscrapers to begin dominating Kowloon's skyline. The New Heart of Hong Kong chronicles the development of the International Commerce Centre (ICC) and how what was originally just another office building is changing the way Hong Kong residents live, work, play and perceive West Kowloon as the new central business district. From Governor David Wilson s 1989 policy address outlining a masterplan for a rail corridor linking a new airport to Central, to KPF s initial design sketches for what became a mixed-use engineering marvel, to case studies of those who have chosen West Kowloon as their office or home, The New Heart of Hong Kong illustrates how ICC challenges the old order of Central's dominance.

The so-called invited 'MASTERcritics' were MOS in 2015, Andrew Zago in 2016, and Jürgen Mayer H. in 2017. In all cases, these architects were tasked with presenting a project brief to the team, which reflected a current pre-occupation in their own discursive production. Book SynopsisA story of the ’70s: when six New York ex-gangsters met Buckminster Fuller and built a geodesic dome In 1970 a meeting took place in an empty loft on the Lower East Side of Manhattan between R. Buckminster Fuller, the revolutionary architect and inventor of the geodesic dome, and six ex-gang members who called themselves “CHARAS.” After a few hours, they found themselves having an earnest and important conversation, and the young men of CHARAS decided to begin implementing Bucky’s ideas. They wanted to create a program that would develop a sense of community autonomy, reclaim public space and give their lives a newfound sense of purpose. Following a period of intensive study of solid geometry, spherical trigonometry and principles of dome building, all led by Michael Ben-Eli, CHARAS constructed a geodesic dome on a vacant lot in the shadow of the Manhattan Bridge. Originally published in 1973 and now published in an expanded edition, Charas: The Improbable Dome Builders is an intimate portrait in pictures and words of these dynamic young men and their community. The first half chronicles the trials and tribulations of building the dome, their intensive training, search for funding, accidental fires, holiday potlucks and Bucky visiting to see their incredible work. The second half contains interviews with the members of CHARAS and their friends, sharing personal stories of their time on the streets, as gang leaders, drug addicts, serving time in prison and finding a new sense of self and community through the applied philosophies of Buckminster Fuller. This edition also includes a new interview with Michael Ben-Eli looking back on the project four decades later.Trade ReviewThe premise of Syeus Mottel’s delightful, disorienting CHARAS: The Improbable Dome Builders is the stuff of retro-futurist fantasy. * Artforum *

The program’s chief motivating force was Arts & Architecture editor John Entenza, a champion of modernism who had all the right connections to attract some of architecture’s greatest talents, such as Richard Neutra, Charles and Ray Eames, and Eero Saarinen. Highly experimental, the program generated houses that were designed to redefine the modern home, and thus had a pronounced influence on architecture—American and international—both during the program’s existence and even to this day. • The Hypospace of Japanese Architecture

Oro Editions The Hypospace of Japanese Architecture

Book SynopsisTraditional thought fused with modern science when Hiroshima's nuclear annihilation on August 6, 1945, proved the interdependence of space and time. Since the war, Japanese architects have probed the relativity of spacetime through critical debates, pivotal theories, and consequential buildings. The Hypospace of Japanese Architecture pushes past clichés of an exotic Japan to confront the modernity of an island nation whose habit of importing foreign ideas is less about assimilation than transformation, less a process of indigenisation than one of cultural invention. The realisation that buildings are dynamic events phenomena of space-in-time, not inert objects outside time continues to inform Japanese architecture and suggests how we can rethink the history, theory, and practice of architecture more generally.
