DAILY MAIL BOOK OF THE WEEK'A sparkling memoir... My hope is that Philip Serrell will do for the antiques trade what James Herriot did for cow's bottoms, as his memoir contains every ingredient for similar popular success... Serrell is laugh-out-loud funny.' Roger Lewis, Daily Mail***When Philip Serrell gave up teaching to become a professional auctioneer, he thought he was embarking on a sensible and safe career... a quiet life in the country with no surprises. How wrong he was. In What Am I Bid? he tells of life after the events he described in his previous memoirs, An Auctioneer's Lot and Sold to the Man with the Tin Leg, to bring his story up to date. From dodgy cars to fakes in the saleroom; angry livestock, mangled silverware and tortuous - not to mention muddy - experiences in local markets and farm sales, Philip has been there, done that and got the hoofprints on his suit to prove it.

  • A History of the Auction

The Book Guild Ltd A History of the Auction

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe early history of the auction dates from 500 BC to the present day. The History of the Auction begins with the auctions of Babylon and ancient Rome and goes on to describe the slave auctions of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and the Industrial Revolution, then on to the rise of the giant auction houses such as Sotheby’s and Christies. The first edition takes us as far as 1985 when the book was published and the advent of the internet. This second edition takes the story from there to the decades that have followed, including the emergence of the major powers of China, Japan and Russia and their influence on the auction scene. Bringing it right up to date, the book shows how the momentous events of the Covid-19 pandemic and the ‘Black Lives Matter’ campaign have seriously influenced how the auction business is conducted globally. More change to this form of business has been brought about in the last thirty years than in the previously recorded two millennia, causing many to wonder whether the auction would survive at all in its old form. The author argues however for the cut and thrust of the traditional auction and for the excitement of a crowded saleroom on sale day, the hallmark of the auction experience that must surely be preserved for future auction-goers to enjoy.

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisAmerican Muscle Cars features stunning historic and contemporary photography and offers a thorough chronology of this classic car's evolution from the 1960s to the present.Trade Review"Author Darwin Holmstrom expertly tells the story in an informative and interesting way that make this book fun to read. Darwin's expertise is drawn from his experience of having written, co-written, or contributed to over thirty books with car or motorcycle subjects. The excellent text is matched with 260 color and 55 black and white photos. Dozens of original factory photos are complimented by the work of well-known automotive photographer Tom Glatch. Glatch's large, high quality photos bring these colorful muscle cars to life." * Examiner.com *"Not just another coffee-table picture book, this is a thorough, well-researched, multi-brand history of American performance." * Muscle Car Review *"Holmstrom and Glatch churn up the memories in their book with some great factory archive information with no shortage of photographs." * San Diego Union Tribune *"American Muscle Cars is a fantastic book, sized perfectly for any coffee table. The writing is informative yet thrillingly engaging, creating an extremely rare occurrence: a coffee-table book that is still fun to read straight through. Holmstrom is often irreverent (note the "clackers" use mentioned above), but is so in a charming, funny way which allows him to simply say what he means—the best example is when describing what post-WWII babies wanted from their cars: sex appeal. Overall, American Muscle Cars is a well-written, well-laid-out, entertaining read that would be a joyful addition to any auto enthusiasts' book collection." * TheNewsWheel.com *"Auto enthusiast Darwin Holmstrom says that when he was growing up in the Midwest, boys his age were just as interested in muscle cars - sporty models with powerful engines - as they were in girls. New 52, he laments the demise of the vehicles. His new book "American Muscle Cars" (Motorbooks, $50), offers a history, including classics like the Pontiac GTO, Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. Their equivalents today are more sophisticated luxury vehicles like the Aston Martin or Maserati. But for Mr. Holmstrom, they just aren't the same. "A real muscle car doesn't have 19 air bags," he says. "It just has a big, powerful engine that makes your heart stop every time you stomp on the accelerator." * Wall Street Journal *

  • The Wine List

Union Square & Co. The Wine List

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA one-of-a-kind exploration of the relationship between culture, politics, history, and wine. Vintage refers to the year grapes are harvested, and that vintage holds meaning. You can look up the weather in any almanac, but some stories are known only to insidersuntil now. In this wine book Grant Reynolds, award-winning sommelier, deciphers these signatures to reveal the impact of marketing and mentorship, technology and trends, and influencers old and new. Beginning in the late eighteenth century with a tale about Thomas Jefferson's secret White House stash and spanning over a quarter of a millennium to social media's effect on chenin blanc's popularity, The Wine List explores both the chemistry and sociology that have made vintages taste a certain way, fetch a certain price, or go extinct altogether. Featuring sidebars on topics like the taste of climate change, mini timelines capturing significant historical moments, and collage-style illustration, these entries solidify the idea Trade Review “There’s always magic behind something that tastes great—whether it’s a simple dish or a bottle of wine. Learning about the passion and craft in the world’s greatest wines through the lens of one of the best sommeliers makes this both an informative and exciting read. Reynolds draws out the art from this technical science, offering a fresh and clever perspective.” —Daniel Humm, chef and owner of Eleven Madison Park "This is a fascinating, story-filled volume that provides wine aficionados with an insider view, but it’s also a great read for anyone wanting more information about the world of wine."—Library Journal, STARRED Review “Sommelier Grant Reynolds explores this complicated intersection of culture, politics, technology, and wine in his sweeping new book. Its pages zoom out, zoom in, and calibrate to give readers a 360 view of why we reach for the significant bottles we drink.”—VinePair “The author’s approach here is unique, and that’s saying a lot when it comes to wine. So many different approaches have been taken, but the focus here is vintages. With a readable style, he dives into what makes them special and drops trivial tidbits about the respective years along the way.”—Cleveland Plain Dealer “It is filled with wine info and insider stories, and it’s an enjoyable read.”—Cape Gazette “Never before has there been a more thoughtful and thoroughly researched almanac of winemaking. Spanning time, space, geography, and world history, with a deep appreciation for the artistry of this ancient (and ever-evolving!) craft, The Wine List is a modern grape lover’s greatest companion. And Grant Reynolds is the ultimate time-traveling, super-tasting guide.”—Gail Simmons, food expert, TV host, and author of Bringing It Home: Favorite Recipes from a Life of Adventurous Eating “A noteworthy addition"—Forbes

Book SynopsisIn the 1950s and 1960s, luxury car buyers, from government ministers to captains of industry, almost invariably bought British. These were stately, dignified, and grand vehicles, with many featuring leather interiors and wood trim. Unfortunately, that market has now largely disappeared and, with it, so have the car-makers themselves. This new book covers cars in the over-3-litre class from the biggest names in British luxury motoring including Alvis, Daimler, and Lagonda, and high-end models from Austin, Rover, and Jaguar. It examines the features and characteristics of these classic cars, as well as explaining why they fell from prominence in the 1970s. ACC Art Books Nutmeg: Graters, Pomanders and Spice Boxes:

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisOnce, nutmeg was worth its weight in gold. For much of human history, the tiny Banda Islands in Indonesia were the only source of this esteemed spice. From the age of the Silk Roads through to the mid-19th century partial shift of production to the Caribbean, covering battles between the Honourable East India Company and the Dutch Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie, this book traces the story of nutmeg, revealing its extensive and often surprising influence over conflict, politics, social mores, and Western society. Beautiful antique silver, gold, enamel, bone, ivory, treen and Tunbridgeware graters and rasps demonstrate how much nutmeg was valued throughout history. This book gathers pictures of some of the finest examples world-wide, alongside mechanical and base metal graters and spice containers. It illustrates, and provides useful information on, the history of pomanders which were associated with nutmeg, as this spice was once thought to ward off pestilence and plague. Combining the social history of nutmeg with explanations of the spice production and transportation process, and illustrating in detail examples in international nutmeg grater collections and museums, this book is the essential reference work for collectors, antique dealers and auctioneers.Trade ReviewNutmeg: Graters, Pomanders and Spice Boxes: Luxury and utility from the 16th century to the present day is mentioned on the Antiques Radio Show podcast, broadcast in Australia on Sydney 2RPH. - Antiques Radio Show podcast

Book SynopsisDecorative ?bread-platters? were hugely popular in Victorian times, firstly among the elite who commissioned custom-made items featuring their coats-of-arms and mottos. They were also used to commemorate royal ceremonies, and of course, families put their crests on them if they were upper class. By the 1860s, enterprising workshops were producing bread-platters more cheaply with standardised carving for the mass market. The production centre until the 1950s was Sheffield, with skilled turners, carvers and metalworkers collaborating to produce matching sets of tableware. In the book, Madeleine Neave shows us how beautiful and varied the boards were, with the inclusion of butter knives, butter churners, and memories from her mother, Rosslyn, who began the collection after a childhood on a farm, milking cows by hand, and making butter.

Book SynopsisPost Sound Design provides a practical introduction to the fascinating craft of editing and replacing dialog, creating Foley and sound effects, editing music, and balancing these elements to a final mix. Based on years of experience and teaching this material to students at Drexel University, award-winning film composer John Avarese offers user-friendly knowledge and stimulating exercises to help compose story, develop characters and create emotion through skillful creation of the sound track. Starting each chapter with a real-life example, the textbook is structured in such a way to create a fundamental understanding of the physics and the biological foundation of hearing, and putting it into practice with suggested movie scenes demonstrating the discussed audio techniques. Post Sound Design engagingly demonstrates the individual areas essential to creating a soundtrack that will enhance any media production.Trade ReviewPost Sound Design is perfect for all aspiring Sound Designers. It’s an excellent guidebook for all aspects of film audio, from initial capture to final product, covering both aesthetic and technical concerns. John Avarese draws from his long career as a composer and sound designer to share priceless practical and organizational advice, as well as pitfalls to avoid. And it’s written in John’s down-to-earth style, making the information easy to digest. Sound is a vital component to any successful film. Good sound gives the visuals an extra magical dimension of context and character, adding elements and realities that can’t be captured by a camera alone. On the other hand, poor sound will ruin excellent visuals. John Avarese offers key points to consider, even before a single scene is shot, to help ensure professional sound quality for films of any budget. Over the years, I’ve worked with John, and his musical and sonic talents really make my films come to life – the result of knowing what each other needs. So, let me go one step further and say: every filmmaker should read this book! If you understand the audio process, it’ll improve your film and save you lots of heartache later on in post-production. * Michael Bailey, Independent Filmmaker, Philadelphia, PA, USA *Post Sound Design is an essential guide to the invisible, yet indispensable art of sound design for motion pictures. All notable, great works in cinema include great sound design. Sound is, after all, half the picture. No question, this book is required reading for emerging filmmakers! Post Sound Design tackles a complex subject and makes it highly accessible for readers at all levels to thoroughly understand the essentials of sound, as well as value the requisite expertise of advanced audio for film. Book SynopsisIn 1972 Leo and Philippa Bernard bought Chelsea Rare Books, a small antiquarian bookshop in the King’s Road, Chelsea, advertised for sale in The Times. The Bernards had no previous experience of bookselling, but Chelsea in the 1970s was a lively place. The stock they acquired with the shop included everything from field sports to embroidery, children’s books, art and modern first editions. In the basement they launched The Beaufort Gallery selling prints and paintings. The young women who joined them as bookselling assistants became friends, often introducing a successor before leaving to marry, have children or move to the country. Philippa Bernard makes light of the hard work she and Leo shared, not to mention the heavy work, handling the books.

Book SynopsisIllicit Trafficking of Cultural Properties in Arab States provides a bird’s-eye view of the phenomenon of illicit trafficking of cultural properties and serves as a reference point for governments, enforcement agencies, international organizations, stakeholders, and civil societies. It focuses geographically on the Arab World: the countries in the Middle East, Gulf of Arabia, Horn of Africa and North Africa. To date a holistic approach to the topic in this region has been lacking. The book investigates the nature of illicit trafficking of cultural properties, the means and impact of illicit activities and crimes perpetrated against archaeological sites and museums. Through up-to-date information, grounded on solid research data, it traces the routes of illicit trafficking and analyzes the actual situation of the targeted region with an eye on the implementation of the international conventions. The aim is to investigate possible firm responses to illicit trafficking and determine the priorities and needs of this region. The outcomes are visible recommendations on the challenge of illicit trafficking of cultural properties in the Arab region, promoting modalities for sharing data and encouraging the review of legislative and judicial systems and practices connected to illicit trafficking of cultural properties. Finally, the work encourages the coordination of stakeholders and the use of technological advances to fulfil this monumental duty.Table of ContentsForeword ; الإتجار غير المشروع بالممتلكات الثقافية في الدول العربية ; Abstract ; Abrégé: Le trafic illicite de biens culturels dans les États arabes ; خلاصة ; Summary ; Résumé ; Chapter One: Introduction ; Chapter Two: Methodology ; Chapter Three: Online platforms and auctions: online trafficking of cultural properties ; Chapter Four: Risk Markets and the ‘end destination’ concept ; Chapter Five: Mapping routes of illicit trafficking of cultural properties ; Chapter Six: Illicit trafficking of cultural properties and financing of terrorism ; Chapter Seven: Measuring illicit trafficking of cultural properties ; Chapter Eight: Arab States and the international conventions on combating illicit trafficking of cultural properties ; Chapter Nine: Conclusion ; Annex 1: References ; Annex 2: List Antiquities Laws in Arab States ; Annexe 3: Seizures of antiquities in Arab States

Book SynopsisHistory Today carried a feature in 2015, describing The Origin of Museums as "a cult book [that] spawned a new discipline in the history of collecting". Indeed, the first publication of this book in 1985 undoubtedly marked a propitious moment in the development of interest, in what has since grown to be a dynamic subject-area in its own right. That an appetite for such matters was already there is confirmed by the fact that the first impression sold out within a few months, a second impression a year or two later, and the third in 1989. There was to be no further printing by the original publishers, Oxford University Press. However in 2001 a new edition appeared with a new publisher. Demand again proved buoyant, but within a few months the company failed; having operated on a print-on-demand basis, it left behind it no unsold stock. The Origins of Museums reverted to a scarce (though much sought-after) volume. With original copies now selling for hundreds, if not thousands of pounds, the Ashmolean is proud to make this important volume readily available again.
