  • Causal Explanation for Social Scientists

AltaMira Press Causal Explanation for Social Scientists

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAll social scientists, despite their differences on many issues, ask causal questions about the world. In this anthology, Andrew P. Vayda and Bradley B. Walters set forth strategy and methods to answer those questions. The selected readings, all illuminating causal explanation for social scientists, are not only by anthropologists, sociologists, economists, and human ecologists but also by philosophers, biologists, psychologists, historians, and specialists in other fields. The essays will appeal to those doing applied research on practical problems as well as those seeking mainly to satisfy their curiosity about the causes of whatever events or types of events interest them.Trade ReviewThe volume is a compendium unlike most others. Rather than gather causal arguments about specific substantive outcomes, Vayda and Walters have assembled essays on how to question, how to reason, and why to do it a pragmatic fashion....The book is thoroughly coherent, strategically repetitive, and by no means unconvincing. Whether your field is human ecology, land change science, vulnerability research, or political ecology, there are sobering lessons here about bad methodological habits and good question writing....[I]t is hard not to come away from this collection with a renewed sense of energy and possibility. The world is filled with strange events and outcomes, after all, none of which have ready-made answers, and all of which can avail themselves to energetic observers with open minds. For a moment, viewed this way, it is possible to think that environment-society research might actually be filled with surprise. That is a welcome message. * Human Ecology *Table of ContentsIntroductory Essay: Pragmatic Methods and Causal-History Explanations by Andrew P. Vayda and Bradley B. Walters Part I. Taylor & Francis Ltd (Sales Synagogue Life A Study in Symbolic Interaction

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisVia a participant-observer approach, Synagogue Life analyzes the three essential dimensions of synagogue life: the houses of prayer, study, and assembly. In each Heilman documents the rich detail of the synagogue experience while articulating the social and cultural drama inherent in them. He illustrates how people come to the synagogue not only for spiritual purposes but also to find out where and how they fit into life in the neighborhood in which they share. In his new introduction, Heilman discusses what led him to write this book and the process of personal transformation through which he, as an Orthodox Jew, had to go in order to turn a disciplined eye on the world from which he came. Rather than using the stranger-as-native approach of classic anthropology, he had instead to begin as a native who discoverd how to look at a once-taken-for-granted synagogue life like a stranger. In the afterword, arguing for the efficacy of this approach, Heilman offers guidance on how natives can use their special familiarity and still be trained to distance themselves from their own group, making use of the disciplines of sociology and anthropology. Synagogue Life offers a fascinating portrait that has something to say to social scientists as well as all those curious about what happens in the main arena of Orthodox Jewish community life.Table of Contents1: Background, Beginnings, and Definitions; 2: The Setting; 3: The House of Prayer: The Cast of Characters; 4: Shifting Involvements; 5: Gossip; 6: Joking; 7: Singing, Swaying, Appeals, and Arguments; 8: The House of Study; 9: The House of Assembly; 10: Final Words

Book SynopsisWhat are the limits of cultural critique? What are the horizons? What are the political implications? John Pemberton explores these questions in this far-reaching ethnographic and historical interpretation of cultural discourse in Indonesia since 1965. Pemberton considers in particular how the appearance of order under Soeharto''s repressive New Order regime is an effect of an enigmatic politics founded upon routine appeals to cultural values.Through a richly textured ethnographic account of events ranging from national elections to weddings, Pemberton simultaneously elucidates and disturbs the contours of the New Order cultural imaginary. He pursues the fugitive signs of circumstances that might resist the powers of New Order rule through unexpected village practices, among graveyard spirits, and within ascetic refuges.Key to this study is a reexamination of the historical conditions under which a discourse of culture emerges. Providing a close reading of a number of Trade ReviewI highly recommend Pemberton's study of Java to scholars of ritual for its complex and nuanced treatment of the relationship of ritual and politics. * Journal of Ritual Studies *

University of Pennsylvania Press Reconnecting State and Kinship

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisReconnecting State and Kinship seeks to overcome the traditional dichotomy between state and kinship, asking whether concepts associated with one sphere surface in the other, tracking the evolution of these concepts through time and space, and exploring how this binary is reinforced within the social sciences.Trade Review"Arguing that the anthropology of kinship and political anthropology have become two distinct sub-disciplines, mirroring the assumed dichotomy of traditional versus modern societies, this edited volume sets out to demonstrate the theoretical weakness that arises of such positions. Through excellent chapters by experienced anthropologists, we are shown the fallacy of the separation. Kinship and politics emerge as mutually constitutive enriching our understanding of both." * Signe Howell, University of Oslo *"An excellent collection that goes quite some way to suturing the divide between studies of kinship and family and ethnographies of the state. Editors Tatjana Thelen and Erdmute Alber have crafted a coherent volume that speaks to larger themes within contemporary political anthropology, assembling a uniformly strong set of contributions that pull together a number of key threads in ways that make this book very useful for scholars working in gender studies, kinship studies, and the anthropology of the state." * Rebecca Bryant, Utrecht University *"Reconnecting State and Kinship makes a valuable contribution by arguing for the mutual relevance of the fields of kinship and studies of the state. The book's editors and contributors demonstrate how concepts 'travel' between the realms of kinship and the amalgam of actors that animate the state, and in doing so acquire new meanings." * Alice Wilson, University of Sussex *

  • Medical Anthropology in Ecological Perspective

Taylor & Francis Medical Anthropology in Ecological Perspective

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisGlobal environmental change and recent worldwide infectious-disease outbreaks make the ecological perspective of medical anthropology more important a field of study than ever. In this premier teaching text, authors Ann McElroy and Patricia K. Townsend integrate biocultural, environmental, and evolutionary approaches to the study of human health, providing a complete and authoritative ecological perspective that is essential for interpreting medical anthropology. Research by biological anthropologists, archaeologists, and paleopathologists illuminates the history and prehistory of disease, along with coverage of contemporary health issues, both local and global. This sixth edition is thoroughly revised and updated, with expanded discussion on the interaction of environment and infectious disease; new material on climate change, globalization, and the effects of war on physical and mental health; and an entirely new chapter on ethics in community health and medical anthropology. Trade Review"I have used Medical Anthropology in Ecological Perspective on numerous occasions and it is close to my ideal for a textbook in anthropology. Its perspectives in ecology, evolution, and biocultural interpretation are in the forefront of the biomedical and social sciences. I should be proud to have written it myself." --Michael Little, Binghamton University, SUNY "McElroy and Townsend's textbook is a classic, and remains the best overall introduction to medical anthropology available. It is engagingly and clearly written, covering a broad range of topics from biocultural and evolutionary perspectives. I wouldn't consider using any other text to introduce students to this fascinating field of study." --Katherine A. Dettwyler, University of Delaware "The ecological perspective has proven its utility for understanding health and healing across cultures and through the major health transitions. The new edition of McElroy and Townsend retains the classic ecological approach while updating and expanding treatment of the major topics adding illustrative and contemporary case studies; it continues to be in the very first rank of medical anthropology texts." --Lawrence Schell, University at Albany, SUNYTable of ContentsAbout the Authors and Contributors Preface Chapter One: The Ecology Of Health And Disease Environment, Culture, and Health Profile: Arctic Adaptations by Ann McElroy A Working Model of Ecology and Health Recommended Readings Chapter Two: Research Methods In Health Problems Anthropological Approaches to the Use of Medicinal Plants Bio-Environmental Data Profile: Cannibal Mourners by Patricia K. • Taylor & Francis Ltd Living Beings Perspectives on Interspecies

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisLiving Beings examines the vital characteristics of social interactions between living beings, including humans, other animals and trees. Many discussions of such relationships highlight the exceptional qualities of the human members of the category, insisting for instance on their religious beliefs or creativity. In contrast, the international case studies in this volume dissect views based on hierarchical oppositions between human and other living beings. Although human practices may sometimes appear to exist in a realm beyond nature, they are nevertheless subject to the pull of natural forces. These forces may be brought into prominence through a consideration of the interactions between human beings and other inhabitants of the natural world. The interplay in this book between social anthropologists, philosophers and artists cuts across species divisions to examine the experiential dimensions of interspecies engagements. In ethnographically and/or historically contextualized chaptersTrade Review"[Living Beings] provides a stimulating new collection of ethnographic and historical perspectives on the ways in which other living beings are ‘good to think’, and are of vital material and metaphorical importance in human spirituality and creativity. - Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute Living Beings offers a lot to think about ... it indicates a serious and growing emphasis on the subject, and it shows that anthropology as well as other disciplines still have contributions to make. - Anthropology Review Database [This book] represent[s] a significant milestone for the multispecies turn and offer[s] some useful theoretical and methodological foundations ... Seasoned fieldworkers will find a refreshing new angle with which to analyse old fieldnotes and new projects. - Australian Journal of Anthropology Living Beings provides a multitude of interesting and innovative ways to rethink the relationship between humans and other-than-human beings. • Disassembling Police Culture

Taylor & Francis Ltd Disassembling Police Culture

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisDrawing on six years of ethnographic research, this book critically examines police culture, exploring police behaviours, decisionmaking and actions. Police culture is a concept widely used, often critically, to characterise the working attitudes and behaviours of (usually uniformed) police officers. It is shorthand for a workplace imbued with machismo, racism, sexism, a thirst for danger and excitement, cynicism and conservatism. Rather than looking for culture or identifying how culture affects behaviours, this book identifies factors that influence the decisions and actions, including technology, targets, training, timing, intelligence, geography and supervision, thus reassembling police culture much as Bruno Latour sought to reassemble the social. The analysis develops a clearer and critical understanding of culture by explicitly connecting the debates about police culture to those about organisational culture. Offering a detailed ethnography of two shifts, it grounds theTrade Review"Mike Rowe has done us all a favor by taking on the hazy and protean concept of culture to explain all that is wrong (and some that is right) with police behavior. This is a timely and whip smart ethnography of everyday policing as carried out by officers on the streets in three urban departments located in England. Resting on six years of close observation of the working patterns of officers, Rowe argues with telling evidence that policing is far from the intense, breathtaking activity as portrayed in the movies and TV but is comprised of tedious, rather repetitive tasks in which highly specific features such as the varied social contexts in which the work takes place, the wide range of individual and group preferences held by officers, the day-to-day supervisory practices in the field (or lack thereof), and the unevenly enforced policies of a department matter far more when accounting for police behavior than the popular but flawed and flattening notion of police culture. This is hard slogging scholarship of a lively and relevant sort that deserves the close attention of those interested in just how the police shape and are shaped by the work that they do."John Van Maanen, Professor Emeritus of Organization Studies, MIT "A timely, important, thought provoking and challenging book. Keenly observed and researched, conceptually rigorous and a real pleasure to read. Recommended for anyone interested in the crucial area of police culture, Science and Technology Studies in policing and the links between them – or, indeed, the realities and daily work of policing more broadly." Taylor & Francis Performing Religion on the Secular Stage

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines the relations between Western religion, secularism, and modern theater and performance. Sharon Aronson-Lehavi posits that the ongoing cultural power of religious texts, icons, and ideas on the one hand and the artistic freedom enabled by secularism and avant-garde experimentalism on the other, has led theatre artists throughout the twentieth century to create a uniquely modern theatrical hybridâtheater performances that simultaneously re-inscribe and grapple with religion and religious performativity. The book compares this phenomenon with medieval forms of religious theater and offers deep and original analyses of significant contemporary works ranging from plays and performances by August Strindberg, Hugo Ball (Dada), Jerzy Grotowski, and Hanoch Levin, to those created by Adrienne Kennedy, Rina Yerushalmi, Deb Margolin, Milo Rau, and Sarah Ruhl. The book analyzes a new and original historiography of a uniquely modern theatrical phenomenon, a study that is of high importance considering the reemergence of religion in contemporary culture and politics.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book discusses (auto- )ethnographies of accountability, undertaken (in close collaboration) by a multinational group of accounting and organization theory researchers over a period of three years. The key assumption underlying the book is that accountability is inherently an identity- creating process where the study of account- making has to be done participatively, with radical openness to the one(s) being researched, as well as to their context. That openness we call ethnography'. The values or assumptions inherent to the practices of account and identity-making, in a specific context, are what (auto- )ethnographies seek to describe and identify. These values and assumptions warrant critical, ethical reflection, and this is what the researchers presented here have tried to provide. The chapters in this book all are mini- studies of relatedness. The scale of examination is intimate; the reflections provided by the researchers are mainly methodological. This book i

Book SynopsisAn understanding of the social sciences within infection prevention and control (IPC) is important for those working in health and social care. This new book, Infection Prevention and Control: A Social Science Perspective positions the specialty of IPC as more than a technical discipline concerned with microbes. Book SynopsisThe essays collected together in Critics Not Caretakers argue that the study of religion must be rethought as an ordinary aspect of social, historical existence, a stance that makes the scholar of religion a critic of cultural and historical practices rather than a caretaker of religious tradition or a font of timeless wisdom and deep meaning. The book begins with several essays that outline the basis of an alternative, sociorhetorical approach to studying religion, before moving on to a series of discrete dispatches from the ongoing theory wars, each of which uses the work of such writers as Karen Armstrong, Walter Burkert, Benson Saler, and Jacob Neusner as a point of entry into wider theoretical issues of importance to the field's future. The author then examines the socio-political role of this brand of critical scholarshipa role that differs dramatically from the type of sympathetic caretaking generally associated with scholars of religion who feel compelled to go Trade Review"The issues discussed in the first edition have not gone away; they are here now with a vengeance. This second edition rises to the occasion with new provocative chapter introductions that are not to be missed. But what is most remarkable is how the old and new come together in a way that will have us read the field—its history, its challenges, and its potential--with fresh perspective and the vigor to make it better."Richard Newton, The University of Alabama, U.S.A."Russell T. McCutcheon’s Critics Not Caretakers was one of a small handful of key works from the last thirty years that helped to bring about a paradigm shift in the academic study of religion, a shift that opened up space for all-new avenues of research on the political history of the concept of religion. The material new to this second edition helps readers—both old and new—situate the book in relation to the history of the discipline, the debates that were taking place at the time of its publication, and the scholarship since that has participated in the book’s trajectory; along the way, McCutcheon points to where his hopes for the discipline remained as yet unfulfilled. Critics is now essential reading for any scholar writing on the contested history of "religion.""Craig Martin, St. Thomas Aquinas College, U.S.A."What McCutcheon does so masterfully in this work is to provide clarity on what religious studies as a discipline has the power to do so well: to analyze how people both create and respond to ideas of unquestionable authority, the driving concept behind so many movements we call “religion” today. However, this book’s longevity and relevance lies in its central claim that scholars of religion also have these unquestionable authorities with which they must grapple. This is a must-read for anyone who takes seriously the social and political dynamics that define the academic study of religion."Leslie Smith, Avila University, U.S.A."In Critics Not Caretakers, McCutcheon offers a way of writing about and teaching contentious topics, not only in the study of religion but also in the wider humanities and social sciences since it is not really about ‘religion’ but the critical study of a category that has been taken for granted. This augmented second edition is a reminder of what it is a scholar of religion is studying: the ways in which humans categorise, classify, divide the world around them into sacred/secular, insider/outsider and so on, bringing to our attention the scholarly assumptions privileging the ‘sacred’ and the ‘insider’ in these bifurcations. McCutcheon gives attention to both theoretical concerns and pedagogy, and thus this book has a practical application for those researching and teaching the study of religion."Suzanne Owen, Leeds Trinity University, UK.Table of ContentsForeword to the Second Edition Acknowledgments to the First Edition Acknowledgments to the Second Edition Copyright Permissions Introduction to the Second Edition Part I. Book SynopsisIf you feel like the world has gone to hell in a handbasket, youâre not alone. If you often feel thereâs nothing you can do about it, youâre also not alone. Along with this increasing anger, fear, and frustration, much confusion still prevails on the appropriate communication practices for responding to difficult situations and improving our lives. Communication experts Robert Danisch and William Keith explain why and how we can practice radical civility in this practical guide to everyday âœpoliticalâ communication. This guide begins with examples of radical civility to show the potential of this kind of communication to change minds and bridge differences. The authors then unpack the three foundational principles of radical civility as useful theoretical tools for thinking throughout interactions with others in civic spaces. This is then followed by a three-step process for practicing radical civility drawing on research into active listening and its importance for creating connections, validating other views, and opening up possibilities for future conversation. The guide concludes with evidence-based communication practices and prescriptive recommendations for how to do each and show examples of each in action.Radically Civil: Saving Democracy One Conversation at a Time is a much-needed communication-based antidote to polarization, preparing students, researchers, and community leaders to be responsible participants in todayâs society.

Book SynopsisThis book explores the socio-political practice of collective memory in the context of prejudices and stereotypes that circulate in the public sphere with regard to the role of women experiencing wartime and political violence. With a focus on Poland and Central and Eastern Europe, it draws on memoirs, biographies, autobiographies, testimonies by women authors, ideological proclamations and secular âhagiographiesâ of heroines, female leaders and contemporary role models, to examine the ways in which the oppression experienced by women during war is reflected in public discourse, how prejudices and stereotypes concerning the role of women are used politically, and how women respond to the politicization of their own narratives and participation in violence. Guided by the idea that memory is political, such that how we think about it, speak about it and how create it is a political issue,Womenâs Roles in Times of War and Political Violence highlights the fate and experiences of those who have been and are still denied their âown voiceâ by society. It will therefore appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in womenâs studies, collective memory and womenâs wartime experiences.

Book SynopsisIn The Foundations of the Composite Culture in India, the focus of the author is the process of establishment of Hindu-Muslim unity as a result of historical, social and cultural factors over a period of ten centuries. Traversing this era, he reveals how the Muslim rulers contributed to such harmony and how the two cultures exchanged and accepted each other''s tenets to enrich and formulate a composite Indian culture. To explore the foundations on which the complex culture of India rests, the author examines the contribution of Sufism which inherently connotes syncretism and tolerance, as well as the simultaneous rise of the Bhakti movement in medieval India. This title is co-published with Aakar Books. Book SynopsisThroughout prehistory the Circumpolar World was inhabited by hunter-gatherers. Pottery-making would have been extremely difficult in these cold, northern environments, and the craft should never have been able to disperse into this region. However, archaeologists are now aware that pottery traditions were adopted widely across the Northern World and went on to play a key role in subsistence and social life. This book sheds light on the human motivations that lay behind the adoption of pottery, the challenges that had to be overcome in order to produce it, and the solutions that emerged. Including essays by an international team of scholars, the volume offers a compelling portrait of the role that pottery cooking technologies played in northern lifeways, both in the prehistoric past and in more recent ethnographic times.Trade Review'The book is well illustrated, and the references that follow each chapter are up to date. The book will appeal to undergraduate and graduate students in archaeology as well as researchers in the field.' M. J.
