Pallas Athene Publishers James Seymour
Book SynopsisJames Seymour (c. 1700-1752) is one of the founders of English sporting art. A lover of the Turf, Seymour specialised in depictions of horses and their riders, particularly at Newmarket between 1722 and 1752. His wonderful paintings and drawings are some of the most important records we have of the early greats, such as Flying Childers, and of the way racing was organised at this early stage. Richard Wills has studied Seymour for over ten years, and this book is the first ever comprehensive account and catalogue. 130 paintings and 430 drawings, including new discoveries, are included in the book, with over 500 illustrations, many never reproduced before. The introductory essay examines the life of Seymour, whose devotion to the Turf enabled him to gain an unrivalled knowledge of equine anatomy and behaviour. Considerable information about the history of racing, and its enrichment through analysis of Seymour’s paintings, is contributed by David Oldrey and Tim Cox.

It is a feast for the eyes. Clearly written, so many useful hints and tips. Its a pleasure to read. Ideas and projects to follow, inspiration to keep you busy, and to keep dipping into. If birds and fabric and stitch are your thing, this is the book for you. * Judith Clarke *This is a beautifully illustrated book with thick glossy pages, the sort of book that makes a lovely gift for anyone into needlecraft. The book has six projects but its the inspiration from these projects that sets the book apart. Loads of gorgeous photos of the pictures/project that you could make and details of how to mount to a picture frame for instance or turn into a cushion. The book has five pages of templates of birds, boats and other related items to help bring your projects to life * Amanda Hayes *Issue 37 Rachel Sumner describes herself as an artist who uses textile techniques. She is also a self confessed hoarder of recycled materials. In this highly imaginative reference book she showcases the ways of capturing the essence of birds through the medium of stitch, using old pieces of fabric, recycled haberdashery items and found objects (nature-inspired postage stamps and tangled fishing thread). Incorporating techniques such as dyeing, working with disolvable fabric, applique and machine embroidery she explores designing, sketching, laying out, stitching scenes featuring puffins, seagulls, chickens, and blackbirds, in six different projects inspired by nature. Chapters focus on materials, equipment, designs, techniques, capturing character, depicting a scene and telling a story. Templates, photographs and simple instructions to help you along the way in this truly inspirational gallery of ideas. * Reloved *Search Press’ Stitched Textiles series focuses on contemporary textile artists’ work and features staged projects and techniques using a wide range of materials. This latest title shows how to depict birds through the medium of fabric and thread. This series is a good way of learning how to use a wide range of materials and methods including dyeing, appliqué, hand and machine embroidery, dissolvable fabrics and even found objects. If you have a stash of fabric scraps left over from other projects this book has many ways of using them up to make collage pictures. The bulk of this book is taken up with six projects but the first part focuses on what you need, an overview of techniques used and information about mounting, design and creating backgrounds. If you want to go into dyeing cloth and trying out shibori techniques the information here is not full enough for beginners but serves more to suggest another way of using fabrics. The projects themselves are a great way of learning to make pictures out of stitched cloth and you can choose from puffins, blackbirds, gulls (two projects depict these), chickens and an ark filled with birds. Each project features a series of captioned photographs including close ups of key areas. There are also galleries of other works by the author which briefly outline methods used and at the back all the templates are given at 50% size. I love the way you can make a whole picture out of scraps and most people who already use textiles in their crafts will have most if not all of the materials and tools already. A good addition to the series. * myshelf.com *I really didn't know you could create such amazing pictures with textiles. If you have never used textiles in this way before don't worry this book is going to take you through everything you need to know. You learn all about the equipment you will need. How to create your design and sketch out your ideas. If you struggle to create designs it's okay as the book takes you through using artworks as inspiration. The book then takes you through how you will be using the fabric and how to use the colours. You are then taught how to use the fabrics to build up a background, create a foreground, stitching, final touches and how to adapt your design. Types of fabric selection are discussed so that you can make the right decisions. The book even takes you through how to dye fabrics as well as using dissolvable fabric. The techniques you learn can be used to create any textile picture you want. You can either follow the designs in the book or create your own designs. You are then taken through a number of designs so that you can recreate them: Puffin, Chickens, Seagulls on a Boat, Blackbirds, Seagull on a Beach and Bird Ark. You also have galleries throughout of different designs that you can make. At the back of the book are the templates you will need to create the designs within the book. The book is inspiring and informative. http://www.crochetaddictuk.com/2016/09/stitched-textiles-birds-search-press.html. * Crochet Addict UK *This is a most inspirational book, beautifully illustrated and with clear instructions and interesting insights into how Rachel Sumner gets her ideas. I have long been an admirer of her work and have some of her cards but this book is just stunning. There are step by step guides on finding inspiration, building a background, using colour and everything you need to adapt your own ideas. There are techniques and stitches to use, even how to mount your work in different ways. The quality of the illustrations is excellent and the bird subjects beautifully represented. Not only is it a wonderful book to keep for yourself but also a brilliant present for anyone who likes textile work, I can't praise it enough, must get some fabric sorted now! * Sonia Hawes *This book is just full of gorgeous inspiration and great basic starter tips for anyone who would love to begin this beautiful art form. It has plenty to attract both a beginner and a more experienced artist and is full of great photos to inspire you. I am definitely going to start today by building up a collection of suitable materials in line with my chosen colour scheme! * Gill Phipps *This book is full of the most gorgeous birds to stitch backed up with useful tips and techniques to try. Six original step-by-step projects complete with templates and suggestions for fabrics to use with helpful advice on how to build up the backgrounds and foregrounds. The instructions on dyeing fabrics and use of dissolvable fabric were particularly valuable. I really adored the Puffin,Chickens and Seagull projects which just captured the attributes of these birds so well and can't wait to get started with creating my own stitched picture and cushion versions of these. You do need a sewing machine, preferably one equipped for embroidery but with even a very basic one it should be possible to produce some pleasing results. * Sassie Clarke *I really can't see anyone not getting excited about this book. Everyone loves birds and Rachel's birds really are chirpy. You'll love the interpretations in stitch of blackbirds, chickens, puffins and seagulls. Find 6 step-by-step projects to create birds plus galleries of finished work. Create a lovely bird ark or tell a story with stitch. You'll discover all the techniques used to make the birds - dyeing, dissolvable fabric, piecing by machine and hand embroidery. Work up a background with fabric scraps then create foreground elements, discovering how to use plain and patterned fabrics and stitch to advantage. This is a very colourful book full of wondrous stitch. Templates are provided at the back of the book. * YarnsandFabrics.co.uk *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 Materials 10 Equipment 14 Design 16 Techniques 26 Capturing Character 44 Puffin 46 Chickens 52 Gallery 60 Depicting a Scene 68 Seagulls on a boat 70 Blackbirds 80 Gallery 90 Telling a Story 98 Seagulls on a Beach 100 Bird Ark 108 Gallery 118 Templates 124 Index 128

ACC Art Books Horse Rider in African Art
Book SynopsisHorses are very rare in Africa. The few to be found west of Sudan, from the lands of the Sahara and Sahel down to the fringes of the tropical forests, belong to the king, the chief warrior and to notable persons. Due to the dense humidity of the tropical rainforest and the deadly tsetse fly, only restricted numbers of horses survive. And yet rider and mount sculptures are common among the Dogon, Djenne, Bamana, Senufo and the Yoruba people. The Akan-Asante people of Ghana and the Kotoko of Chad produced a good deal of small casting brass and bronze sculptures. Some of the artists could barely even have caught a glimpse of a horse. This visually stunning book presents a wealth of African art depicting the horse and its rider in a variety of guises, from Epa masks and Yoruba divination cups to Dogon sculptures and Senufo carvings. In Mali, the Bamana, Boso and Somono ethnic groups still celebrate the festivals of the puppet masquerade. The final chapter of this book is dedicated to the art and cult of these festivals, which are still alive and well. It is not the habit of the African artist to provide intellectual statements for his work, yet his unique creative dynamic and far-searching vision does not conflict with that of his Western counterpart. It is fair to state that the African, who though not educated in Western art history, contributed his fair share to the shaping of modern art. Features works from museums in both Africa and Europe, including the Musée Royal de L'Afrique Central, Tervuren in Belgium; Afrika Museum, Berg en Dal, Netherlands; Musée du quai Branly, Paris; Museum Rietberg, Zurich; The British Museum, London; Museu National de Antologia, Lisbon and National Museum, Lagos, Nigeria.Trade ReviewThis book builds and expands the scholarship covering this central motif in African art and culture and serves as an authoritative contribution to the field. --Nicole Beatty, ARLIS -- Nicole Beatty Arlis/ Na Reviews Chemeche (artist, author, and curator) offers the first catalogue devoted to the subject in African art. Hirmer Verlag King of the Animals: Wilhelm Kuhnert and the
Book SynopsisWilhelm Kuhnert was a pioneer. He was one of the first European artists to travel to the largely unexplored savannahs and jungles of the German colonies in North and East Africa. Under hazardous conditi ons he documented at close quarters the fascinating animal and plant world and then created in his Berlin studio monumental paintings which were much sought - after on the art market. Like no other artist of his time Wilhelm Kuhnert (1865 – 1926) has moulded our image of Africa. In his seductively realistic drawings, watercolours and paintings he recorded with almost scientific accuracy the characteristics of the animals and their habitat. It is not surprising, therefore, that his pictures illustrated on the o ne hand legendary reference works like Brehms Tierleben and adorned on the other the popular collector cards of the chocolate manufacturer Stollwerck. The volume shows a comprehensive, exciting portrait of Kuhnert’s unusual life and works and takes into account at the same time the current debate on attitudes to Germany’s colonial past.

Taschen GmbH Walton Ford. 40th Ed.
Book SynopsisAt first glance, Walton Ford’s large-scale, highly detailed watercolors of animals recall the prints of 19th-century illustrators John James Audubon and Edward Lear. A closer look reveals a complex and disturbingly anthropomorphic universe, full of symbols, sly jokes, and allusions to the ‘operatic’ quality of traditional natural history. In this stunning but sinister visual universe, beasts and birds are not mere aesthetic objects but dynamic actors in allegorical struggles: a wild turkey crushes a small parrot in its claw; a troupe of monkeys wreaks havoc on a formal dinner table; an American buffalo is surrounded by bloodied white wolves. In dazzling watercolor, the images impress as much for their impeccable realism as they do for their complex narratives.First available as a signed and limited volume, this updated edition of Pancha Tantra is the most comprehensive survey of Ford’s oeuvre to date, with more than 20 new works. It features dazzling details, an in-depth exploration of his visual universe, a complete biography, and excerpts from his textual inspirations: from Indian folktales and the letters of Benjamin Franklin to the Autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini and Audubon’s Ornithological Biography.Trade Review“Walton Ford’s draftsmanship has Dürer’s woodcut muscularity, and his ambitious compositions have the sweep of Delacroix or Géricault.” * Men’s Vogue *“Think John James Audubon crossed with Hieronymus Bosch.” * Vogue *“Ford’s work in all its gory‚ hyper-real glory.” * Los Angeles Times *

Book Synopsis“If you’re a lover of wildlife imagery, this is worth adding to your wishlist” —Amateur Photographer "...an amazing new photobook on the giants of the animal kingdom..." —Examiner USA "This is the type of book that makes a handsome gift for any wildlife lover. But you’ll want to look at every photo before giving it away." —Inhabitat "This book marvelously lives up to its title, not just in size... but in subject matter: big animals, from lions to sharks to grizzly bears, all stunningly photographed by two highly accomplished wildlife photographers who decided to combine their work for this wondrous portfolio." —Air Mail When we encounter an animal in nature, it triggers something in us; we feel a certain emotion in the presence of the other creature: amazement, adoration, fascination, and indeed, in some situations, fear and apprehension. But a brush with a deer, wild boar, or hare is no comparison to a rendezvous with a grizzly, lion, shark, or pod of whales. Amos Nachoum and Marko Dimitrijevic have experienced this hundreds of times in their combined 70 years as wildlife photographers. Now, for the first time, they are combining their award-winning photographs with previously unpublished photographs of the world’s largest animals in one book. The two photographers, who are also friends, tell us what it is like to be out in the wild and look the world’s biggest animals right in the eye. The structure of the book’s chapters is arranged based on human emotions such as amazement, admiration, fear, and love. In their book, Nachoum and Dimitrijevic bring us closer to the giant animals of our planet, and allow us to share what these two men feel during these encounters, helping us learn about ourselves when we do so. teNeues Publishing UK Ltd One of a Kind: The Unique World of Island Animals
Book Synopsis"It's likely that a book like this is the only way you might see many of these creatures for yourself." — Amateur Photographer This book of photographs puts the spotlight on a group of animals that is little-noticed, and undeservedly so: endemic species that exist only on their respective islands. Isolated from continents by the ocean, certain species have been able to evolve further and differently than their counterparts on the mainland, where they are subjected to far more threats such as predators and diseases. Over time, giants like the Indonesian Komodo dragon have evolved, which grows up to three metres long and weighs 70 kilos. The comet moth lives on Madagascar, and the odd King of Saxony bird-of-paradise flies around on New Guinea. The flightless cormorant on Galapagos, on the other hand, retracted its flight instruments over time because it had no need for them. Readers can expect a variety of animal beauty and extravagance. The following locations are included in the book: Island of Sainte Marie (Madagascar) Madagascar Philippines Lesser Sunda Islands (Indonesia) Aru Islands Regency (Indonesia) New Guinea Australia Tasmania (Australia) New Zealand Santa Catalina Island, Channel Islands (California, US) Cozumel (Mexico) Cuba Isla Escudo de Veraguas (Panama) Galapagos Islands (Ecuador) Falkland Islands Svalbard Archipelago Text in English and German.Trade Review"It's likely that a book like this is the only way you might see many of these creatures for yourself." - Amateur PhotographerTable of ContentsLiving Fossils Giants Miniatures No Need to Fly Diversity Biography Picture Credits Imprint
