Search Press Ltd Atmospheric Animals in Watercolour: Painting with
Book SynopsisFrom domestic cats and dogs to wild lions and giraffes, best-selling artist and author Jean Haines shows the reader how to bring a vitality of life to their animal artwork. Known for the vibrant colours and exciting, innovative painting techniques that she brings to her work, Jean's latest book invites beginners and more experienced artists alike to share a journey through painting animals from around the world. Painting animals requires a delicacy of touch. Jean starts with simple monochrome artworks and progresses on to more vivid paintings that incorporate exciting textural effects. Using lessons from nature to help bring the reader closer to the animals, Jean shows how to portray the animal's spirit and bring vitality to the reader's artwork. Suitable for all abilities, from first-time painters to experienced artists, Jean shares all the materials and unique techniques she uses, and provides a wealth of expert tips and advice inspired by the animals themselves, helping the reader to progress and find their own path. Scattered throughout the book are dozens of Jean’s wonderful paintings, showcasing a veritable Noah's Ark of different animals to inspire the reader on their artistic journey. Trade ReviewI’m an enormous fan of Jean’s work and, if her sales are anything to go by, you probably are too. I’ve always been impressed by the way her subjects seem to emerge organically from the paper as if propelled by their own life force. The subtitle of this new volume is ‘painting with spirit & vitality’ and it seems to me that this sums that ethos up perfectly. These are not animal portraits in the conventional sense, but rather the life and soul of those creatures. Jean has written books about mind and spirituality expressed through painting and that theme continues here. If you’re worried that it’s all a bit New Age, don’t be. This is firmly a book about painting animals that just happens to sidestep simple representation. A short section on Animal Meanings explains this clearly and a lot of the book is about getting to know your subject just as if it were human. If you have pets, you do that anyway, don’t you? Technically, there’s a lot about colour and washes – Jean works about as loosely as you can – and that includes how to retain shape and form so that your results are anything but pure abstract. Some of these are startling: a cat whose face is the only delineated part, an elephant done in shades of green, fish that move in their pond because superseded form creates sinuousness. What’s really remarkable is that you have to look twice to notice all this because the book absolutely lives up to that subtitle. These are real animals. Not just paintings of animals – it’s a heck of a trick to pull off. -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *Prize-winning watercolourist, Jean Haines runs international watercolour workshops for artists around the world. Her vibrant and innovative work can be found in her previous books, Atmospheric Flowers in Watercolour and Paint Yourself Calm. Here she turns her attention to animals. From simple monochromatic studies to vivid paintings full of colour and textural effects, Jean shows you how to being vitality to all animals, whether they are domestic, such as dogs and cats, or found in the wild - from giraffes to bugs and butterflies. -- Ingrid Lyons * Leisure Painter *I suspect that this is a book you're either going to love or hate. Past sales, however, would suggest that Jean has many fans who'll make a beeline for anything she writes, and this is unlikely to disappoint them. The production is top class and the book feels sumptuous in the hand, promising treats to come. These come as animal paintings that are full of essence and character, but light on form. Jean's work seems to coalesce from the page, rather than sit on it as a static image. As a result, these creatures - from cats and dogs to koalas, elephants and even an octopus - have life and spirit, while much of their form is left to the imagination. Technically, much of the book is about experimentation, with washes, textures, granulation and colour (one of those elephants is in shades of green), resulting in a tribute to watercolour's range of possibilities. -- Henry Malt * The Artist *This beautiful book gives you the tools to create paintings that capture the inner essence of their subject - the soul of the animal, if you will. Jean uses a variety of techniques to achieve this, as well as often using an unconventional mix of colours - your first instinct on painting an elephant probably isn't to teach for the greens. This is as much a book about understanding your subject as it is about representing it, and it's all the better for that. * SAA Catalogue *Table of ContentsAuthor’s welcome 6, Introduction 8, Igniting the passion 10, The bear necessities 14, Getting started: Simple studies 30, Step-by-step Elephant in monochrome 34, Learning from animals 38, Step-by-step Hedgehog 44, Inspiration from nature 48, For the love of dogs 52, Step-by-step Italian Spinone: Humphrey 64, Feline fine 68, Step-by-step Socks 74, A walk on the wild side 80, Down under 94, Step-by-step Sleepy Koala 96, Under the sea 106, Step-by-step Starfish 108, Step-by-step Octopus 116, A mammoth task 122, Seeing double 132, Be unique: sheep 138, Bugs and butterflies 144, Creative art 152, Magical interpretations 158, Index 160

Book SynopsisFollowing the success of A Dog a Day and Old Dogs, Sally Muir returns with an adorable collection of beautiful rescue dog portraits that will melt even the coldest of hearts. Several years ago, Sally Muir began a Facebook project, posting dog art daily, which became the best-selling book A Dog a Day. Through the project she was introduced to endless people and their dogs, and the distinct personalities and complex emotions that owners attribute to them. This was followed with Old Dogs, where Sally asked the public to send in photos of their elderly canines. She was drawn to the tales behind their greying whiskers and so the natural next step was rescue dogs with their eventful life stories. Rescue Dogs is a beautiful collection of loveable hounds with colourful histories and expressive faces. From Mr Bojangles who was rescued after being hit by a car to Molly who found a new lease of life after being rescued from a shelter at age 15, Rescue Dogs will tug at the heartstrings and leave you with a profound sense of optimism for life, new beginnings and kindness. Book Synopsis Following the success of A Dog a Day (Pavilion, 2017), Sally Muir returns with a collection of new, but crucially old, faces. Several years ago Sally Muir began a Facebook project, posting dog art daily, which became the best-selling book A Dog A Day. Through the project she was introduced to endless people and their dogs, and the distinct personalities and complex emotions that owners attribute to them. More recently, Sally's project changed focus and she asked the public to send in photographs of their old dogs. Featuring grey muzzles, milky eyes and wobbly legs, as well as tender anecdotes picked up from a whole lifetime of companionship, Sally Muir’s paintings of our more senior canines are collected here for the first time. Sally Muir is well known for her portrayal of dogs, with Elderly Dog featuring in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2018 and Hound following up in the Summer Exhibition in 2019. The popularity of Elderly Dog has fuelled Sally's desire to continue to paint older dogs, and celebrate the ageing process of our favourite pets in grace and style. From loose sketches and lithographs to potato prints and oil paintings, Old Dogs includes a range of mediums that Sally has become known for, and embraces dogs of all shapes and sizes: big, small, pedigree and cross breed.Trade Review'Muir’s dog portraiture ... demonstrates the artist’s technical range and her keen understanding of essential doggishness. ... Chronicle Books Cats in Spring Rain
Book SynopsisNo one captures the graces and idiosyncrasies of cats quite like the painters, printmakers, and haiku masters of Japan. From the Edo to the Showa period, many artists turned their gaze toward an unlikely subject: their small feline companions. Closely observed portraits in words and ink elevate the everyday adventures of cats: taking a nap on a Buddha statue's lap, daintily eating a rice ball, courting the neighbor's cat. This curated collection of poems, prints, and paintings will leave you inspired to cultivate the serenity and wonder embodied by these creators - and by the cats themselves. Presented as a sweet, jacketed paperback with thoughtful design touches, this volume includes each poem in both English and Japanese.

Taylor & Francis Art Animals and Experience
Book SynopsisElizabeth Sutton, using a phenomenological approach, investigates how animals in art invite viewers to contemplate human relationships to the natural world. Using Rembrandt van Rijnâs etching of The Presentation in the Temple (c. 1640), Joseph Beuysâs social sculpture I Like America and America Likes Me (1974), archaic rock paintings at Horseshoe Canyon, Canyonlands National Park, and examples from contemporary art, this book demonstrates how artists across time and cultures employed animals to draw attention to the sensory experience of the composition and reflect upon the shared sensory awareness of the world.Trade Review"This book asks readers to take another look at the ways in which animals are represented in art and, in so doing, raises some important ethical and aesthetic considerations." – J. Keri Cronin, Brock University"Phenomenology has taught us much about how artworks trigger our perceptual capacities, but its ability to teach us about the possible ethical relationships between viewer and artwork has been less explored. In this original and thought-provoking study, Sutton explores such a possibility through the framework of the representation of dogs in art. Pallas Athene Publishers James Seymour
Book SynopsisJames Seymour (c. 1700-1752) is one of the founders of English sporting art. A lover of the Turf, Seymour specialised in depictions of horses and their riders, particularly at Newmarket between 1722 and 1752. His wonderful paintings and drawings are some of the most important records we have of the early greats, such as Flying Childers, and of the way racing was organised at this early stage. Richard Wills has studied Seymour for over ten years, and this book is the first ever comprehensive account and catalogue. 130 paintings and 430 drawings, including new discoveries, are included in the book, with over 500 illustrations, many never reproduced before. The introductory essay examines the life of Seymour, whose devotion to the Turf enabled him to gain an unrivalled knowledge of equine anatomy and behaviour. Considerable information about the history of racing, and its enrichment through analysis of Seymour’s paintings, is contributed by David Oldrey and Tim Cox.

If you want to go into dyeing cloth and trying out shibori techniques the information here is not full enough for beginners but serves more to suggest another way of using fabrics. The projects themselves are a great way of learning to make pictures out of stitched cloth and you can choose from puffins, blackbirds, gulls (two projects depict these), chickens and an ark filled with birds. Each project features a series of captioned photographs including close ups of key areas. There are also galleries of other works by the author which briefly outline methods used and at the back all the templates are given at 50% size. I love the way you can make a whole picture out of scraps and most people who already use textiles in their crafts will have most if not all of the materials and tools already. A good addition to the series. * myshelf.com *I really didn't know you could create such amazing pictures with textiles. If you have never used textiles in this way before don't worry this book is going to take you through everything you need to know. You learn all about the equipment you will need. How to create your design and sketch out your ideas. If you struggle to create designs it's okay as the book takes you through using artworks as inspiration.
