Peeters Publishers Untersuchungen zur Spathieratischen Buchschrift
Book SynopsisVon den verschieden agyptischen Handschriften des 1. Jt. v.

Peeters Publishers Satricum in the Post-archaic Period: A Case Study
Book SynopsisHow can material culture be related to written history? The archaeological record of ancient Satricum (Borgo, Le Ferriere, Latium) pents an interesting case study. During the fifth and fourth centuries BC, the area was reportedly invaded by the Volscians. This Central-Italian people had long been archaeologically invisible, but recent investigations at Satricum have brought to light a rich record of material remains from precisely this period. The question is: does it reflect a Volscian presence or prove the continued occupation of the original, Latin inhabitants? This study argues that the material culture does indeed reflect a Volscian presence, but that it in no way confirms the barbarian image presented by ancient sources such as Livy. Marijke Gnade has lectured on Italian Archaeology at the University of Amsterdam since 1987. After participating in the Satricum Research Project for ten years, she became its executive director in 1991. Her first book on the subject, The Southwest Necropolis of Satricum, was published in 1992.

Peeters Publishers Learned Antiquity: Scholarship and Society
Book SynopsisThis book is the first of three volumes containing selected proceedings of the international conference on the theme of Knowledge, Learning and Cultural Change, held at the University of Groningen in November 2001. The contributions in this volume - which tackle the three basic topics of encyclopedic texts, centres of learning, and paradigm shifts - deal with a wide variety of topics, ranging from the Ancient Near East to the Early Medieval West. They bring us into contact with many different cultures and languages: those of Neo-Assyrian, Babylonian and Hellenistic Mesopotamia; of Late-Antique and Medieval Judaism; of the Late-Antique Greco-Roman world; and of Christianity under the Roman, Byzantine, Islamic and Carolingian Empires. The contributions show that the discussion of cultural change in relation to the field of knowledge and learning, and as applied to some of the literary witnesses thereto, is an approach both enriching and rewarding, since it contributes both to the elucidation of the past and also to a better understanding of the present. The topics treated in this volume, therefore, are not only relevant to specialists in the various fields, but are likely to stimulate much further investigation of comparable or related themes, by demonstrating the approaches to and directions of research which are most fruitful in the study of the complicated questions pertaining to cultural phenomena and their mutation, transformation or development in a continually changing world.

Peeters Publishers Antiquity Renewed: Late Classical and Early
Book SynopsisThis volume deals with similarities and correspondences between Late Antiquity (c. 300-600 AD) and the Renaissance (roughly after c. 1350). In both periods, the presence of two competing forces, the ancient classical and the Christian traditions, led to a constant dynamic of thought and creativity. The ten essays in this volume present new views on these issues in the fields of political philosophy, theology, law, literature, art, and architecture.

Peeters Publishers Zij Schreven Geschiedenis: Historische Documenten

Peeters Publishers The Emperor's Retrospect: Augustus' Res Gestae in
Book SynopsisThe most famous of all Latin inscriptions is the A"Res Gestae divi AugustiA" ("the achievements of the late emperor Augustus"), published after his death at the entrance to his mausoleum in Rome, but known to us from various copies set up in the eastern provinces. It set out the things he most wanted to be remembered for from his first bid for power at the age of 19. The first copies were brought back to Europe in the sixteenth century, and the text has been a focus of scholarship ever since. This monograph tells the mostly neglected story of the recovery of the text over some four centuries, then the way modern scholars have attempted to understand it. It reveals that assessment has lacked insight to an alarming degree, and that many misunderstandings have become canonical. This study attempts to understand the text in its own terms, and test it against the author's own intentions - about both what is said and what is not said. The standard list of omissions turns out to be mostly mistaken, while many real omissions have not been signalled. The standard list of objections to the author's reliability often turns out to be highly defensive but defensible statements. The largest chapter, however, confronts the many cases where Augustus' statements can be directly challenged, despite the oft-repeated modern claim that he could not possibly tell a lie, because too many people knew the truth. These lies have generally been signalled before, but not previously assembled. The text is finally placed in the context of the Augustan age and its audience and the Augustan world view.

Peeters Publishers Roman Citizens of Athens
Book SynopsisAthens remained legally a free and independent city under the Roman Empire, preserving her ancient institutions and vaunting her cultural heritage to promote herself as the archetypal city of Old Greece. Yet her society underwent a fundamental transformation in the face of imperial power, as is shown most decisively by the readiness of her inhabitants to accept Roman citizenship. Drawing primarily on the complex array of available epigraphical evidence, this book presents a comprehensive catalogue of the residents of Athens whose nomenclature proclaims their Roman status, from slaves and freedmen to the holders of the highest offices. It serves both as a fully referenced prosopography of the leading families of Roman Athens complete with discussion and stemmata, and as an onomastic supplement to the author's previous work on the A"Lexicon of Greek Personal Names IIA" and A"Foreign Residents of AthensA" by making readily accessible the 240 Roman A"nominaA" on record borne by some 2100 individuals. An appendix offers a reconsideration of the chronological problems of the period and a new archon list.

Peeters Publishers A View from the Highlands: Archaeological Studies
Book SynopsisInterest in the mountainous regions of the Syro-Mesopotamian plain came relatively late in the development of Near Eastern archaeology. In the psyche of scholars, who were attracted initially to the civilisations of the lowlands, the edge of the rugged highland terrain formed a disciplinary boundary as much as a geographical one. While an intial spurt of interest in the ancient 'mountain cultures' of Anatolia was expressed in the early 1900s, it was short-lived. Subsequently, archaeological explorations in the highest altitudes in Anatolia languished until the 1950s and the arrival of Charles Burney, who through a series of pioneering projects rediscovered the Kingdom of Urartu and prepared solid foundations for the future study of earlier periods. Always probing and speculative, Charles Burney has been a source of inspiration for archaeologists working in the highlands of east Anatolia, Trans-Caucasus and north-west Iran. Despite the difficulties that modern political boundaries presented in this geographically broken terrain, he has managed to offer engaging accounts of its pre-classical past without ever loosing sight of its human element. The essays gathered in this volume are a reflection of an archaeological community that wishes to pay tribute to a scholar whose panoramic vision of antiquity is rivalled only by the wide extent of his generosity, expressed in so many ways, to fellow workers in the field. Although this is a substantial volume of essays, written by pupils, friends and colleagues, the contributors are merely representatives of a much larger number who join them in honouring him.

Peeters Publishers Tribes and Territories in Transition: The Central
Book SynopsisThis volume deals with the transition from the Late Bronze to the Early Iron Age in the central East Jordan Valley, the period of the fall of the Egyptian New Kingdom, and of the birth of a new era, in which small kingdoms such as Ammon, Moab and Israel were born. A broad spectrum of sources is being reviewed: written evidence, excavations and surveys, and ethnographic sources from the 19th century and later. New archaeological evidence is being presented, including a report on the excavations of Tell el-Hammeh on the Zerqa. This evidence, written, material and ethnographical, is incorporated in a new model for the LB-IA transition in the region: a model that explains the events of this turbulent period as the precipitation of a tribal society, where the interactions of tribes and territories determined the political lay-out and shaped the kingdoms of the Iron Age.

Peeters Publishers Semi-public Narration in Apollonius' Argonautica
Book SynopsisAncient epic narrators can be termed "semi-public" because they address both public and private audiences. Public audiences exist outside the fictional context of the story, and private audiences exist within it. The narrator of Homer's "Iliad", for instance, addresses both the listeners and readers of the poem, and private narratees such as the character Patroklos. In Apollonius' "Argonautica", the narrator's semi-public nature is rather extraordinary. This is because the narrator is actually influenced by demands that the private narratees impose on him, and even by things that these narratees say to him. As a result, the narrator's own voice often resembles the voices of his characters, and the poem can, at times, seem like a dialogue between the two parties. In considering this apparent dialogue, "Semi-Public Narration in Apollonius' Argonautica" resolves a number of the serious interpretative difficulties with which scholars of the "Argonautica" have long been engaged.

Peeters Publishers In Het Land Der Nijlcataracten (1883): Ingeleid

Peeters Publishers Luristan Excavation Documents: The Iron Age: v.
Book SynopsisThis monograph is the final report of the excavation of the War Kabud graveyard in Luristan, Iran, by the University of Ghent and the Royal Museums of Art and History, Brussels. The excavations, directed by Louis Vanden Berghe, were conducted in 1965 and 1966. War Kabud represents the largest number of excavated tombs (203) in a single Pusht-i Kuh cemetery. Dating back to the Iron Age III (8th-7th c. BCE), it is a representative assemblage of burialgoods and testifies of the homogeneity of the material culture of that period. Burials are individual and the dead were usually accompanied by pottery and quite often also by iron weapons (arrowheads, swords and daggers, spearheads, axes), bronze maces, vessels, anklets, bracelets and a variety of beads. The site, although essentially with a local material culture, shows some relations with Assyria. All finds are illustrated in line drawings, the tombs and the main objects also in photographs.

Peeters Publishers Beginning from Apollo: Studies in Apollonius
Book SynopsisA"Beginning from ApolloA" is the sixth volume of A"CaeculusA" and contains the Proceedings of the sixth Fransum Colloquium, held on 8 March 2003. The theme of this colloquium was Apollonius Rhodius, the third c. BC poet who wrote the epic A"ArgonauticaA" as well as a number of other works, now preserved only in fragments. Apollonius' work was the subject of two doctoral dissertations completed at the University of Groningen, by Burkhard Scherer and by Iris Schmakeit, who have organised the colloquium and chosen the speakers. The papers in this volume share a focus on the position of Apollonius within the Greek cultural tradition. We see on the one hand how he engages the literary tradition before him and expects his readers to know the material of earlier poets, such as Homer, Pindar and the tragedians, and of the earlier Argonautic epics. On the other hand we get an impression of the way in which Apollonius incorporates antiquarian material, including traditions about obscure cults. Finally we learn how Apollonius and the Argonauts were the object of attention of later poets and scholars. Taken together the articles in this volume provide the reader with a good picture of Apollonius' central position in a long chain of reception and interaction.

Peeters Publishers The Shadow of Polybius: Intertextuality as a
Book SynopsisFor students of ancient Greek historiography the "Histories" of Polybius, devoted to the important theme of Rome's rise to world power in the second century B.C., are a unique source of information. The work contains many references to, and quotations from, forerunners active in the preceding two and a half centuries, whose works no longer survive. Because that precious information is freqently couched in highly polemical terms, with Polybius moulding the evidence in accordance with his personal views, its value is hard to assess. The fifteen papers in this volume, delivered to an international conference held at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in the Fall of 2001, offer a systematic investigation into Polybius' many critiques and attempt to assess their potentially distortive effects. The historian of Megalopolis emerges as a towering personality who has cast a long shadow over the badly damaged landscape of Hellenistic historiography.

Peeters Publishers The Problem of the Greek Sources of Movses
Book SynopsisOne of the most important and disputed spheres of research on the «History of Armenia» by "the father of Armenian historiography" Movses Xorenac'i is the issue of his literary sources. The study of Xorenac'i's «History» since the latter half of the nineteenth century led to varied and often diametrically opposed views; scholars ended up with either an outright denial of the historiographic value of Movses' book or unreserved acceptance of everything he says. Thus, the source study today requires an especially circumspect and nuanced understanding. A number of questions need to be clarified and re-assessed in relation to Xorenac'i's "Greek" sources. The author of the present study has re-examined in detail the references to Berossus (third century BC), Alexander Polyhistor (first century BC), Cephalion (first - second centuries AD), Abydenus (first or second century AD), Julius Africanus (second - third centuries AD), and Bishop Firmilian (third century AD). From his study he has drawn conclusions that call for a modification of earlier over-simplified opinions.

Peeters Publishers Philosophie Et Sciences a Byzance De 1204 a 1453:

Peeters Publishers Har-pa-chered (Harpokrates): Die Genese Eines

Peeters Publishers Coptica - Gnostica - Manichaica: Melanges Offerts

Peeters Publishers Der Gott Chepri: Untersuchungen Zu

Peeters Publishers Foundations of Power and Conflicts of Authority
Book SynopsisThe volume offers the acts of a meeting held at the University of Turin on the foundations of power and the conflicts of authority as documented by the monastic sources of East and West in Late Antiquity, with special reference to Max Weber's analysis of these notions. The issue is here examined from a variety of perspectives: the different meanings of power and authority in ancient monastic sources; the criteria by which authority is established within the monastic organizations; the kind of power and authority exercised towards outsiders; the relationship between monks and other authorities, especially the Church; the monks and their economic activity; the strategies for the solution of conflicts. The wide range of historical and cultural problems raised by these questions is what the present volume tries to illuminate through individual studies of a number of specific phenomena, events, and figures (from Shenute to John Cassian, from Abraham of Kashkar to Maxim the Confessor), paying particular attention to monasticism in Egypt, Palestine, Africa, and Persia.

Book SynopsisThis first fascicule of the Final Report on the excavations at Tepe Nush-i Jan, located some 60 km south of Hamadan, provides a detailed account of the five seasons of excavation conducted between 1967 and 1977 as well as a comprehensive description of the temples and associated buildings belonging to the site's main Median occupation. The importance of the site lies principally in the architectural remains constructed in the eighth and seventh centuries BC when the Medes were the dominant population in central western Iran. In the order in which they were built, the monumental buildings of this hill-top sanctuary include an originally isolated tower-like temple which housed a stepped altar on which fire was burnt, a second temple, a strongly fortified storage facility, and a columned hall with three rows of four columns - a forerunner of the famed columned halls of the Persians at Pasargadae and Persepolis. In a remarkable development most of these distinctive structures came to be at least partly filled and encased with stones and mud-brick. As a result, the buildings proved to be in an exceptional state of preservation with intact doorways and, on occasion, intact ceilings as well. Subsequently, probably in the sixth century BC, squatters occupied those structures to which they could still obtain access. Before Tepe Nush-i Jan was investigated there was little or no evidence for the archaeology of the Medes from their own homeland. Today other sites, such as Godin Tepe and Ozbaki Tepe (not to mention fortified 'frontier posts' such as Tell Gubba), can be recognized as belonging to the same culture. Above all else, Nush-i Jan offers a striking picture of the achievements of the Medes, particularly in the field of architecture.

Peeters Publishers Osiris, Ramses, Thot Et Le Nil: Les Chapelles

Peeters Publishers The Sculptural Environment of the Roman Near
Book SynopsisPublic sculptures were the "mass media" of the Roman world. They populated urban centers throughout the empire, serving as a "plastic language" that communicated political, religious, and social messages. This book brings together twenty-eight experts who otherwise rarely convene: text-based scholars of the Greco-Roman, Jewish, and Christian realms from the fields of classics, history, and religion and specialists in the artistic traditions of Greece and Rome as well as art historians and archaeologists. Utilizing the full spectrum of ancient sources, the book examines the multiple, at times even contradictory, meanings and functions that statues served within the complex world of the Roman Near East. Moreover, it situates the discussion of sculpture in the broader context of antiquity in order to reevaluate long-held scholarly consensuses on such ideas as the essence of Hellenism (the culture that emerged from the encounter of Greco-Romans with the Near East) and the everlasting "conflict" among paganism, Christianity, and Judaism.

Peeters Publishers Syria Incognita?: Het Verborgen Verleden Van De

Peeters Publishers Chagar Bazar (Syrie) III: Les Trouvailles
This third excavation report on the new excavations at Chagar Bazar, which were resumed in 1999, contains the complete publication of the 214 Old Babylonian cuneiform tablets and hundreds of sealings bearing cylinder-seal impressions discovered in Area I between 2000 and 2002. The contexts of the discoveries are also briefly described. Most of the tablets belong to the palatial archives from the reign of the king Samsi-Addu and the information gathered through the study of the texts sheds new light on the understanding of the Old Babylonian tablets discovered by M. Mallowan in 1936 and 1937.

Peeters Publishers Eugnoste. Lettre Sur Le Dieu Transcendant (NH

Peeters Publishers Luristani Pictorial Tombstones: Studies in
Book SynopsisFrom the late 18th to the early 20th century northern Luristan was dominated by feuding tribal leaders, more or less independent of the Qadjar State. The religious concepts of the illiterate Luristani nomads of this period are reflected in the iconography of the pictorial tombstones. Inge Demant Mortensen's book on the Luristani Pictorial Tombstones is primarily based on her studies of the nomadic cemeteries during her fieldwork in Luristan in the 1970s. Her focus is on the testimony of the pictorial tombstones and the religious messages and connotations they reveal. As a background for the interpretation of these messages she makes an attempt to establish the historical, social, and religious context of the cemeteries, and to identify the tribal identity of the nomads residing or moving from winter to summer pastures within the plains and valleys of northern Luristan, where the pictorial stelae and obelisks occur.

Book SynopsisThis volume presents contributions from thirty colleagues in honour of Jaromir Malek, for his inspirational role, both in Egyptology more widely, and in the direction of the Topographical Bibliography section of the Griffith Institute, at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. The papers reflect the encyclopaedic variety of his interests and research. Several focus on the primary evidence for the past, from Old Kingdom to Late Period sculpture, and from the pyramids to the cat in ancient Egypt. Among the works preserved in museum collections or unearthed in recent excavation, some items are published for the first time, while other papers bring out the wider significance of specific monuments or monument-types. The remaining authors consider an international spectrum of written and pictorial archives, material which Jaromir Malek, more than any of us, has made accessible and taught us to value as primary evidence in a particular form.

Peeters Publishers The Predynastic Egyptian Cemetery of El-Gerzeh:
Book SynopsisThe cemetery of el-Gerzeh (dated to c. 3600-3350 BC) excavated in 1910-11, seemingly provided the first evidence of Predynastic 'Naqada culture' outside its previously documented social field in Upper Egypt. Moreover, the distinctive character of the assemblage later led Petrie to use the cemetery as the type-site for his 'Gerzean' culture. Despite the apparent significance of the cemetery, the excavation report was brief. Fortunately, the tomb cards from the excavation still exist and almost 300 artefacts from the site have been accessioned into several museums. This book brings together this material for the first time and by utilizing recent archaeological and anthropological theories reassesses its significance. Through the central theme of social identities, together with subsidiary issues concerning scale and the role of funerary practices in ancient communities, the material from Gerzeh is presented and interpreted more fully.

Recension Breve (NH

Peeters Publishers Ceramics of the Phoenician-Punic World: Collected
Book SynopsisAncient ceramics play a significant role in monitoring change, adaption and interaction in ancient cultures. This collection of essays concerns pottery from the homeland sites of Beirut and Tyre, and Phoenician settlements in the west at Carthage, Utica, Lixus and Malta. The contributions reflect a wide range of approaches to the study of ceramics, from the fundamental characteristics of the clay from which vessels were built, the range of ware types in a given location, and the hybridity forged through cultural contact between indigenous and foreign groups. Domestic needs as well as the supply and demand of the market place were driving forces in ancient pottery production.

Book SynopsisThis volume, containing 16 chapters in English and French, is dedicated to Jean-Paul Morel. It is in two parts: 'Greeks and Celts in Provence and Languedoc before Roman Rule' and 'From Etruria to the Black Sea'.The first part, on Greeks and Celts in southern France, demonstrates the vitality of archaeological research and the new discoveries and new methodological approaches it has fostered: excavations and surveys, geomorphological and paleo-environmental studies have shed new light on the evolution of indigenous cultures and relations between Celtic communities, Greeks and others, studied in their geographical and historical contexts. Massalia's domination of the coast began in the Archaic period but was firmly established only three centuries later, after the Second Punic War. Old theories of a general and regular Hellenisation of the whole region must be discarded once the complexity of relations between Celts, Greeks, Etruscans and Ibero-Punic communities is brought into focus. The second part looks at Demaratus of Corinth and the Hellenisation of Etruria, recent research at Apollonia Pontica, the urbanism of Histria, the prosopography of the Greek cities and native peoples of the northern Black Sea, and various scenes depicted on pottery, their interpretation, and the interpretation of pottery itself. The book is amply illustrated.

Peeters Publishers Die Grabreliefs Aus Dem Bosporanischen Reich
Book SynopsisThe book discusses the grave stelai and grave reliefs from the Bosporan kingdom. Occupying the eastern Crimea and the Taman Peninsula on the northern shore of the Black Sea, this ancient Greek state was situated in an important contact zone of the ancient Greek world. The permanent interaction of Greeks and indigenous peoples (the Scythians, others and later the Sarmatians) in this region resulted in a dynamic local culture. Subjected to long-term acculturation processes, this culture reflected elements of Greek and indigenous traditions. In this respect, the grave stelai erected in Bosporan necropoleis and their numerous relief depictions dating from the 5th century BC to the 3rd century AD are a unique source: they provide us not only with pictorial evidence for local identities, but are, ultimately, also of great value for our understanding of the development and transformation of this local culture in general. The book deals with problems of typology, stylistic developments and the (re-)evaluation of the chronology of the reliefs. A major part focuses on analysis of imagery of relief stelai (mainly from the 2nd century BC to the 2nd century AD) and the development and originality of the iconography compared with monuments from Greece, Asia Minor and the neighbouring Greek cities of the northern Pontic region (e.g. Chersonesos). Increasingly dominant local iconographic solutions, such as the famous depictions of horsemen or soldiers, are discussed and are interpreted in the context of role-models and value-systems. Particular attention is also paid to questions concerning the validity of ethnic interpretations and the reflexes and deliberate use of contemporary local material culture in iconography. In addition, an attempt is made to embed the monuments in the context of the local funerary culture, i.e. the contemporary Bosporan necropoleis with their manifold forms of sepulchral self-representation. Consideration of epigraphic and literary evidence seeks to shed further light on the cultural and social dimension of these developments and phenomena. A comprehensive catalogue of over 1200 published grave monuments, including detailed descriptions, bibliographical references and information about find-spots etc. (based on analysis of literature and study in relevant archives and museums) completes the publication.

Book SynopsisBecause of their architectural value and function as places of hygiene, relaxation and interaction, bathhouses have always played a prominent role for civilizations in Anatolia and its neighboring regions. As architectural spaces and important cultural institutions, baths have been continously shaped by social and historical change on many levels and thus constitute a rewarding subject of study for archaeologists and historians in many different sub-fields of the discipline. The outcome of a symposium organized by Koc University's Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations in Istanbul, the essays in this volume examine the evolution of the building type and its cultural context, Seljuk hamams, Ottoman hamams in the capital as well as the provinces of the empire, Safavid and Mughal baths from a comparative perspective, the Turkish bath in the West, and hamams in the painter's imagination.

Peeters Publishers Makedonische Pharaonen Und Hieroglyphische

Peeters Publishers Intercultural Contacts in the Ancient
Book SynopsisThe conference Intercultural Contacts in the Ancient Mediterranean (ICAM) was organised in 2008 by the Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo. While Mediterranean contacts in archaeology are a popular topic in Europe, it was the first time this theme was addressed in Egypt. The conference aimed to discuss theoretical and methodological issues related to the study of intercultural contacts in archaeology on the one hand, and to present actual case-studies of such contacts on the other. In the present volume, thirty-five contributions deal with intercultural contacts all over the Mediterranean from the Levant to Spain and from Egypt to Greece, from prehistory up to the Hellenistic period. They are presented in six sections: Theory and methodology, Identifying foreigners and immigrants, Material evidence for contact, Maritime trade and sea ports, Influences in iconography, ideology and religion, and Administration and economy.
