Book SynopsisEcstatic prophecy is characteristic of the prophetic movement (Montanism) that emerged in Christian circles in the second half of the second century. The so called Montanists spread and diversified quickly within the congregations of the Roman Empire and provoked immediate opposition. One such early opponent of Montanism can be reconstructed from the 48th chapter of Epiphanius' Panarion. This opponent polemicises against the Montanist charismatic demands. The Montanist own arguments can also be inferred from the opponent's argumentation, as well as seven oracles spoken by Maximilla and Montanus. This study identifies Epiphanius' source as the earliest reconstructed source on Montanism. It is argued that the author of this source is the apologist Miltiades. In addition, Montanus' and Maximilla's oracles are made the subject of a detailed interpretation, and their biblical background is highlighted.

Dabei wird insbesondere die provinziale Ebene, weniger hingegen die munizipale in den Blick genommen. Hieran lassen sich signifikante und fër die gesamte Provinz bedeutsame Entwicklungslinien am deutlichsten aufzeigen.Die Analyse des archäologischen, epigraphischen, numismatischen und literarischen Quellenmaterials zeigt, dass mit der Verehrung des Augustus - dem Begrënder des Prinzipats - ein erster Höhepunkt in der kultisch-religiösen Kaiserverehrung erreicht worden ist. Über diesen Höhepunkt reicht erst die kultisch-religiöse Verehrung des von 117-138 n.Chr. regierenden Hadrian wieder hinaus. Hadrian ist der erste princeps, dem gleich mehrere provinziale Kulte geweiht sind. Darëber hinaus wird er als erster amtierender Regent nicht nur im öffentlichen munizipalen Raum, sondern auch in der Sphäre des Privaten kultisch-religiös verehrt. Dadurch, dass er die Institution des Panhellenion grëndet, wird seine Person als Integrationsfaktor fër den gesamten Osten des imperium Romanum zum Gegenstand einer institutionalisierten ëberprovinzialen kultisch-religiösen Verehrung. Die kultisch-religiöse Verehrung aller ëbrigen principes, die in dem untersuchten Zeitraum regierten, bleibt sowohl hinter derjenigen des Augustus als auch erst recht hinter derjenigen Hadrians zurëck. Dieses Ergebnis hat Auswirkungen fër die neutestamentliche Exegese; insbesondere legt es die Datierung der Johannesapokalypse in hadrianischer Zeit nahe, deren Abfassung um 132 n.Chr. anzunehmen ist.

Book SynopsisJames M. Scott examines a denarius minted in Rome in 55 bce which is visually fascinating but conceptually enigmatic. On its obverse, around the head of a female figure with turreted crown, appears the name A. Plautius, who held the office of aedilis curulis in that year; on its reverse is a camel, in front of which a male figure kneels on his right leg, holding the camel’s reins in his left hand and extending a branch in his right hand; the legend reads: BACCHIVS IVDAEVS. Scott’s study argues that the oft-suggested connection between Aristobulus’ gift of the golden vine (from the Temple) and the Bacchius Iudaeus denarius does seem to merit further investigation. To that end,he examines, first, Pompey’s own agenda in having the coin minted. It is shown that the year the denarius appeared, 55 bce, was the same year in which Pompey dedicated his spectacular theater-temple in Rome, and, furthermore, that these very public displays are related as expressions of Pompey’s Dionysian pretensions. Second, Scott examines each element of the denarius in question, looking for clues as to the meaning of Bacchius Iudaeus. It is shown that the Latin inscription refers first and foremost to the god Bacchus/Dionysus via an interpretatio Romana. Finally, he explores the possible implications of his investigation for the precise date of the fall of Jerusalem in 63 bce. Scott’s study delves deeply into Judaism at the beginning of the Roman era, using the Roman coin to highlight the complex interface between Greco-Roman and Jewish religiocultural institutions of the period.

Daraus kann allerdings nicht der Schluss gezogen werden, Kindesaussetzung sei in der Zeit der Antike ein ganz alltägliches Phänomen gewesen. Zum einen lässt sich Ã"ber deren Häufigkeit aus der Distanz von mehr als zweitausend Jahren nichts Sicheres sagen. Zum anderen gab es eine namhafte Zahl an Texten antiker Schriftsteller, in denen Kritik an der Kindesaussetzung geÃ"bt wird. Die entsprechenden Quellen sind in der vorliegenden Studie erstmals gesammelt und vergleichend analysiert. Sie zeigen ein klares Bild: Antike Menschen empfanden eine Kindesaussetzung als der Natur widersprechend und als gottlos. Eltern, die derartiges erwogen, wurden als gefÃ"hllose, rohe Menschen bezeichnet. Im Bereich des Religiösen gab es MaÃnahmen wie der Ausschluss vom Heiligtum fÃ"r eine bestimmte Zeit oder das Bezahlen einer Geldstrafe. Und wenn es auch bis ins 4. Jahrhundert der christlichen Zeitrechnung kein explizit gesetzliches Verbot der Kindesaussetzung gab, so waren etwa die frÃ"hen Christen sicher, dass ein solches Tun dereinst am Ende der Tage bestraft wÃ"rde. Die antike Kritik an der Kindesaussetzung ist Zeugnis fÃ"r eine breite Ablehnung derselben in den antiken Gemeinschaften verschiedener Zeiten und Orte. Sie zeigt aber auch, dass Kindesaussetzung keine Praxis sog. primitiver Völker war, sondern dass dahinter meist konkrete Nöte wie Armut oder uneheliche Geburt standen.
