Book SynopsisPlato's dialogue with Kratylos is, if not the beginning, at least the first climax of Western philosophy of language. In the area of tension between the question of whether linguistic meaning has a conventional or natural basis, fundamental basic concepts such as sentence truth, name function, ability to represent and semantic compositionality of linguistic units are discussed within the framework of an indicated ontological overall approach. The commentary opens up the "Kratylos" dialogue for today's readers and makes the argumentation and the line of thought understandable.

  • Philo von Alexandria: Das Leben des Politikers

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Philo von Alexandria: Das Leben des Politikers

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisText in German. Philo of Alexandria was the first Middle Platonic thinker whose writings have largely survived. Otto Kaiser introduces the reader to his life, work and writings based on the extant manuscripts. Philo of Alexandria is one of the most important figures in the history of Hellenic culture. His writings are an essential source of information on Hellenic and Stoic philosophy, much of which was subsequently lost. His importance to the history of theology rests on the fact that he was the first author to write about the Pentateuch based on the writings of the Greek philosophers available to him. His works also reflect his knowledge of the thoughts of the empirical scientists of his time. Otto Kaiser introduces the reader to the life, work and writings of Philo based on the extant works of Philo as well as of many other ancient writers.

    3 in stock

Book Synopsis20ths century research in St. Paul is widely impacted by Adolf Deissmann’s prominent view on the apostle as a “homo novus” (1911). But where does this concept originate from, and what does it imply? This collection of articles does not only re-evaluate Deissmann’s concept by tracing it back to its historical and socio-political origins in Cicero and exploring how authors from (early) Imperial Time perceive and transform the homo novus paradigm by diverse modes and strategies of literary self-fashioning. Scholars ranging the fields of New Testament Studies, Greek and Latin Philology, Ancient History, Patristics, and Comparative Literature also examine how the Ciceronian paradigm was early on transformed, disseminated, and applied as a literary concept and an authorial topos of self-molding. One of the leading questions throughout the volume thus is: How do authors like Cicero, Horace, Paul, Tacitus, Seneca, Athanasius, and Augustine fashion themselves in accordance to or in difference from the idea of being a “new man”? It is argued that by means of literary self-configuration, indeed, some of these writers – such as Paul and Augustine – want to appear as “new men” by either altering traditional social, moral, religious, or political roles, or by creating new patterns of social behavior and religious self-understanding.

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Religious Competition in the Third Century CE:

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisThe essays in this work examine issues related to authority, identity, or change in religious and philosophical traditions of the third century CE. This century is of particular interest because of the political and cultural developments and conflicts that occurred during this period, which in turn drastically changed the social and religious landscape of the Roman world. The specific focus of this volume edited by Jordan D. Rosenblum, Lily Vuong, and Nathaniel DesRosiers is to explore these major creative movements and to examine their strategies for developing and designating orthodoxies and orthopraxies. Contributors were encouraged to analyze or construct the intersections between parallel religious and philosophical communities of the third century, including points of contact either between or among Jews, Christians, pagans, and philosophers. As a result, the discussions of the material contained within this volume are both comparative in nature and interdisciplinary in approach, engaging participants who work in the fields of Religious Studies, Philosophy, History and Archaeology. The overall goal was to explore dialogues between individuals or groups that illuminate the mutual competition and influence that was extant among them, and to put forth a general methodological framework for the study of these ancient dialogues. These religious and philosophical dialogues are not only of great interest and import in their own right, but they also can help us to understand how later cultural and religious developments unfolded.

    1 in stock

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book consists in a commentary and translation of Plotinus's Ennead II 9 [33], entitled by Porphyry Against the Gnostics. The commentary has tried to go beyond the traditional approach, based on the idea that Plotinus's Ennead II 9 is the theatre of the clash of two antithetical worldviews: the first, championed by Plotinus; the second, by his Gnostic disciples; on the contrary, the Ennead II 9 [33] represents a dialogue between a master of philosophy and his own disciples. Plotinus's disciples do not regard Gnosticism as distant from Plato. In contrast, Plotinus does not think that Plato is a precursor of Gnosticism, even if he is aware that his doctrines can be interpreted in a dualistic and Gnostic fashion. He agrees with his disciples that for Plato sensible and intelligible reality, as well as Soul and body, are different; however, Plotinus thinks that their different nature can be ultimately traced back to the same principle, namely being, which contains in itself all possibilities of existence. This is the true gnosis that Plotinus has tried to make his disciples obtain by writing the Ennead II 9 [33].

Out of stock

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe present volume brings together a number of studies, eight in all, dedicated to diverse aspects of Aristotle's conception of rational action and practical rationality. Two principal motifs account for their thematic unity. The first one is given in the idea that Aristotle's view is characterized by a fundamental tension between the totalizing orientation of practical rationality, on the one hand, and the situational subjection of human action, on the other. The second one concerns the connection that Aristotle establishes between rational action (praxis) and truth, expressed in the notion of practical truth. The proposed interpretation seeks to show that Aristotle's conception is not just internally consistent and philosophically interesting. It is also capable of entering into fruitful dialogue with a whole range of modern and contemporary views.
