  • A Guide to Protein Isolation

    Springer A Guide to Protein Isolation

    1 in stock

    Book SynopsisIt is a truism of science that the more fundamental the subject, the more universally applicable it is. Nevertheless, it is important to strike a level of “fundamentalness” appropriate to the task in hand. For -depth study of the mechanics of motor cars would tell one example, an in nothing about the dynamics of traffic. Traffic exists on a different “level” - it is dependent upon the existence of motor vehicles but the physics and mathematics of traffic can be adequately addressed by considering motor vehicles as mobile “blobs”,with no consideration of how they become mobile. To start a discourse on traffic with a consideration of the mechanics of motor vehicles would thus be inappropropriate. In writing this volume, I have wrestled with the question of the appropriate level at which to address the physics underlying many of the techniques used in protein isolation. I have tried to strike a level as would be used by a mechanic (with perhaps a slight leaning towards an engineer) - i.e. a practical level, offering appropriate insight but with minimal mathematics. Some people involved in biochemical research have a minimal grounding in chemistry and physics and so I have tried to keep it as simple as possible.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements. Preface. 1. An overview of protein isolation. 2. Assay, extraction and sub-cellular fractionation. 3. Concentration of the extract. 4. Chromatography. 5. Electrophoresis. 6. Immunological methods. Index.

  • Flow Injection Analysis: Instrumentation And

    World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Flow Injection Analysis: Instrumentation And

    Out of stock

    Book SynopsisThe concept of flow injection analysis (FIA) was introduced in the mid-seventies. It was preceded by the success of segmented flow analysis, mainly in clinical and environmental analysis. This advance, as well as the development of continuous monitors for process control and environmental monitors, ensured the success of the FIA methodology. As an exceptionally effective means of mechanization for various procedures of wet chemical analysis, the FIA methodology, in use with a whole arsenal of detection methods of modern analytical chemistry, proved to be of great interest to many.The fast and intensive development of the FIA methodology was due to several factors essential for routine analytical determinations, such as very limited sample consumption, the short analysis time based on a transient signal measurement in a flow-through detector and an on-line carrying out difficult operations of separation, preconcentration or physicochemical conversion of analytes into detectable species.Twenty-year studies by numerous research groups all over the world have provided significant progress in the theoretical description of dispersion phenomena in FIA and various operations of physicochemical treatment of the analyte. This volume is devoted to the presentation of the current status of development of the instrumentation for FIA and the many fields of its practical applications, based on an extensive bibliography of original research publications.Trade Review"... the book contains much beneficial information. It will certainly prove most helpful as a handbook for practising chemists ..." Trends in Analytical Chemistry, 2001

    Book SynopsisThe physical sciences and mathematics are extraordinarily useful in explaining the material world. People and society are constrained by physical reality, but we are often unclear on what constraints are absolute, which may be relative, and those that are simply a matter of taste. Bandwidth explains how limitations in the movement and perception of information constrain human behavior, cognition, interaction, and perspective. How fast can we learn? How much? Why are habits and biases unavoidable? Why is the common statement 'any nation that can land people on the moon surely can ...' frequently wrong? Using equations and physical models, Bandwidth describes constraints which, in part, explain political, economic, religious, and personal frictions. Aspects considered include: how much information can one human absorb in a lifetime? How far does a process of perturbation propagate? How do specialization or generalization, critical thinking or belief, influence what people accomplish? Throughout, equations are used to compactly express ideas, illustrating why mathematical economy of expression accelerates communication and deeper understanding. The critical impacts of uncertainty, fluctuations, or noise, and their implications for law and society, are emphasized.Table of ContentsMeasurement; Correlation vs. Causation; Noise; Signal; Uncertainty, Quantum and Classical; Sampling; Bandwidth; Detection Limit; Dynamic Range; Potential Wells; Nonlinearity, Complexity, and Chaos; Markov Processes; Neural Networks; Qualitative, Quantitative, Triage; Doug Hofstadter Got It Right: the Gödel Theorem; Mental Zoom Lens; Theology; Politics, Business, and Law in Light of Mathematical Concepts; Research and Freedom in Light of Mathematical Concepts;

    World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Understanding Voltammetry

    Out of stock

    Book SynopsisNew Edition: Understanding Voltammetry (3rd Edition)The power of electrochemical measurements in respect of thermodynamics, kinetics and analysis is widely recognized but the subject can be unpredictable to the novice even if they have a strong physical and chemical background, especially if they wish to pursue quantitative measurements. Accordingly, some significant experiments are perhaps wisely never attempted while the literature is sadly replete with flawed attempts at rigorous voltammetry.This textbook considers how to go about designing, explaining and interpreting experiments centered around various forms of voltammetry (cyclic, microelectrode, hydrodynamic, and so on). The reader is assumed to have a knowledge to Masters level of physical chemistry but no exposure to electrochemistry in general, or voltammetry in particular. While the book is designed to 'stand alone', references to important research papers are given to provide an entry into the literature.The book gives clear introductions to the theories of electron transfer and of diffusion in its early chapters. These are developed to interpret voltammetric experiments at macro-electrodes before considering microelectrode behavior. A subsequent chapter introduces convection and describes hydrodynamic electrodes. Later chapters describe the voltammetric measurement of homogeneous kinetics, the study of adsorption on electrodes and the use of voltammetry for electroanalysis.Table of ContentsEquilibrium Electrochemistry and the Nernst Equation; Butler-Volmer Kinetics, Marcus Theory, the Tafel Law; Diffusion: Transient and Steady-State, Cottrell Equation.
