John Nichol, bestselling author of Spitfire: A Very British Love StoryDespite the many films and television programmes over the decades since the end of the Second World War that portrays our allied heroes as grown-up men and women, the Battle of Britain was in the main actually fought and won by teenagers. Based on the hit BBC World Service podcast Spitfire: The People''s Story, we use contemporary diaries and memoirs, many of them previously unpublished, to tell the story of the Spitfire through the voices of the teenagers who risked everything to design, build and fly her. This isn''t a story oTrade ReviewDraws on unpublished diaries and archive recordings to chronicle the extraordinary national effort to construct the fighter aircraft that gave the Allies a critical edge over the Luftwaffe. * The Times *A truly epic account of the actual and symbolic role the plane played in defending Britain in the Second World War. * Sunday Times *Tells the inspiring story of how ordinary citizens came together to build the famous Battle of Britain aircraft. * The Observer *The story of how these fast and lethal little planes helped win the Second World War is stirringly told in this new BBC series. * The Mail on Sunday *The story of the Second World War's most famous plane is peppered with women - many of their stories untold in the decades since the conflict. * The Telegraph *An inspirational read celebrating the incredible young people who gave so much for this iconic British aircraft. * John Nichol, bestselling author of Spitfire: A Very British Love Story *Read Spitfire Kids and you'll start believing this plane has a pulse! * Tessa Dunlop, broadcaster and bestselling author of Century Girls *It is a story of heroism that goes beyond the spiffy moustaches and aerial acrobatics we have all seen in old movies, tapping into the verve and tenacity shown by a young workforce. * The Herald *The Spitfire Kids puts the iconic fighter plane into the round by telling the stories of the people who made it into an icon. -- Al Murray

Book SynopsisFederal Aviation Administration (FAA) programs are funded under four broad budget accounts: operations and maintenance (such as air traffic control and aviation safety functions); facilities and equipment (such as control towers and navigation beacons); grants for airports under the Airport Improvement Program (AIP); and civil aviation research conducted or sponsored by FAA. Additionally, certain aviation programs are administered by the Department of Transportation (DOT) Office of the Secretary, including the Essential Air Service (EAS) program, which subsidizes airline service to certain small or isolated communities as discussed in chapter 1. Chapter 2 reviews airline IT outages and examines DOT''s and FAA''s roles related to airline IT outages and what is known about these outages and their effects on passengers Since 1992, Passenger Facility Charges (PFC) have been collected from airline passengers, as part of the airline ticket purchase, to help commercial service airports pay for capital development projects such as construction or improvement of runways, terminals, and roadways, among other things as reported in chapter 3. Chapter 4 examines, among other issues, trends in DOT''s data on airline service; the effectiveness of DOT''s compliance efforts; and the extent to which DOT''s passenger education efforts align with key practices for consumer outreach. Chapter 5 describes how DOT''s review of antitrust immunity applications considers the potential effects on consumers and evaluates how DOT monitors approved grants of antitrust immunity Chapter 6 examines the extent to which DOT''s process for awarding fiscal year 2014-2016 grants was consistent with its grant notices and recommended practices for awarding discretionary grants, and examines the extent to which fiscal year 2010-2014 grants assisted airports in improving their air service, and identifies factors that affect the success of grant projects. The Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 gave airlines almost total freedom to determine which domestic markets to serve and what airfares to charge. This raised the concern that communities with relatively low passenger levels would lose service as carriers shifted their operations to serve larger and often more profitable markets. To address this concern, Congress established the Essential Air Service (EAS) program to ensure that small communities that were served by certificated air carriers before deregulation would continue to receive scheduled passenger service, with subsidies if necessary as discussed in chapter 7. Chapter 8 describes the reasons why TSA established the TSO Basic Training program; discusses factors OTD considers when updating TSO Basic Training curriculum; and assesses the extent to which TSA evaluates its TSO Basic Training program.

  • Air Safety & the FAA: Select Efforts

Nova Science Publishers Inc Air Safety & the FAA: Select Efforts

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAlthough the U.S. aviation system is one of the safest in the world, hundreds of fatalities occur each year in general aviation, which includes all forms of aviation except commercial and military. The general aviation industry is composed of a diverse fleet of over 220,000 aircraft that conduct a wide variety of operations, from personal pleasure flights in small, piston aircraft to world-wide professionally piloted corporate flights in turbine-powered aircraft. According to the 2011 National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) data, 92 percent of that year''s fatal accidents occurred in general aviation. The majority of general aviation accidents are attributed to pilot error. This book examines the characteristics and trends of aviation accidents from 1999 through 2011 and recent actions taken by the FAA to improve general aviation safety.

  • Integration of Civil Unmanned Aircraft Systems

Nova Science Publishers Inc Integration of Civil Unmanned Aircraft Systems

Book SynopsisSince the early 1990s, unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) have operated on a limited basis in the National Airspace System (NAS). Until recently, UAS mainly supported public operations, such as military and border security operations. The list of potential uses is now rapidly expanding to encompass a broad range of other activities, including aerial photography, surveying land and crops, communications and broadcast, monitoring forest fires and environmental conditions, and protecting critical infrastructures. UAS provide new ways for commercial enterprises (civil operations) and public operators to enhance some of our nation''s aviation operations through increased operational efficiency and decreased costs, while maintaining the safety of the NAS. This book focuses on the integration of civil unmanned aircraft systems in the national airspace system; provides an unmanned aircraft systems comprehensive plan; and discusses the final privacy requirements for the unmanned aircraft system test site program.

Book SynopsisThe crash of Air France Flight 447 (AF447) off the coast of Brazil in June 2009 and the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 (MH370) in the southern Indian Ocean in March 2014 highlight several challenges authorities may face in locating aircraft in distress and recovering flight recorders. In response to these aviation accidents, government accident investigators, international organisations, and industry have offered proposals that aim to enhance oceanic flight tracking and flight data recovery on a global scale. Given the implications for the U.S. commercial fleet, it is essential that the Congress understand the strengths and weaknesses of these proposals. This book describes the challenges in tracking aircraft and recovering flight data highlighted by recent commercial aviation accidents over oceanic regions; government and industry proposals to enhance aircraft tracking, and how aviation stakeholders view their strengths and weaknesses; and government and industry proposals to enhance the recovery of flight data, and how aviation stakeholders view the proposals'' strengths and weaknesses.

Book SynopsisA magical, airborne story of father and son.Jonathan Rotondo was 28 when his father, Antonio, died. Numb with grief, Rotondo decided to track down the object that had once given his father so much joy: a tiny single-seat biplane called Charlie Foxtrot Foxtrot Alpha Mike. Thus began Rotondo's journey to retrace his father's life from Italy to Canada via the plains of East Africa. In his search for Foxtrot Alpha Mike, Rotondo meets a host of colourful characters: an Australian expat living in Kenya who inspired Antonio's love of flight; a soft-spoken Swiss-Canadian who managed to get Foxtrot Alpha Mike into the air; a free-spirited dreamer who bought the plane to dogfight with his mates. In this uplifting story of a father and son, Rotondo catches fleeting glimpses of his father and rediscovers his own passion for flight. All the while he captures "the rush of speed, the exhilaration of the wind's breath rushing through the cockpit and along the fabric flanks, the surreal sensation of gravity's pull and lift's might."

Caitlin Press Flightpaths: The Lost Journals of Amelia Earhart

Book SynopsisOn the 120th anniversary of Amelia Earhart''s birth and the 80th anniversary of her disappearance, award-winning poet, Heidi Greco revitalizes what we know about the iconic aviator through uplifting and historically mesmerizing verse. If most people were asked what they know about Amelia Earhart, they''d probably respond with something like Wasn''t she that pilot who went missing when she tried to fly around the world? Although that much is true, Earhart was so much more. She was a feminist at a time when women were just beginning to make inroads towards equality. She was a best-selling author who made appearances and speeches that inspired many. In addition, she was a pacifist, a poet, a punster ? the list could go on. She was ahead of her time in so many ways, right down to the no-nonsense clothes she wore (many of them fashioned after her own designs). To this day, her disappearance is enshrouded in mystery, with many questions remaining. Was she on a secret mission, spying for her country? Was she captured by the Japanese and held in a prison camp? Or did she and her navigator simply crash and die? The poems in this collection, presented as if written by Earhart herself, consider some of the many theories that attempt to explain her disappearance. Through logbook entries, recollections and letters, the work explores some of the various flightpaths she may have taken.

B. Cooper on a Northwest Orient flight in 1971. It was also the start of one of the most astonishing aviation whodunits in the history of American true crime: how one man extorted $200,000 from an airline before parachuting into the wilds of the Pacific Northwest, never to be seen again. The case of D.
