National Science Teachers Association Spenser and the Rocks
Book SynopsisAs he begins to discover the interesting rocks all around him, Spenser has many questions about what he finds. Given the differences in the rocks’ colours, sizes, shapes, and textures, there is much to learn about rocks! But that’s not all the curious child learns in this tale of discovery. Spenser’s fascination grows as he sorts and re-sorts his rock collection and asks questions about what he observes. For Spenser—as well as young readers—the experience is an engaging introduction to scientific procedures such as classification and research.Spenser and the Rocks is part of the I Wonder Why book series, written to ignite the curiosity of children in grades K–6 while encouraging them to become avid readers. West Margin Press Noel Merrill Wien: Born to Fly
Book SynopsisBorn into a family of aviators, Merrill Wien was destined to become a pilot. His father, Noel Wien, was one of the first pilots to fly in Alaska and his life was full of firsts, including making the first round-trip flight between Asia and North America in 1929. His mother played a big role in the founding and development of Wien Alaska Airlines, the second-oldest scheduled airline in the United States and territories. One of the most versatile and experienced pilots of his time, Merrill has flown just about every aircraft imaginable from DC-3s to Lockheed 1011s to historic military planes like the cargo C-46 and B-29 bomber to the Hiller UH-12E chopper. Although fundamentally modest by nature, family and friends encouraged Merrill to share his remarkable stories given his accomplishments and experiences with so many famous people and events. His tone is engagingly informal as he recounts crossing paths with such luminaries as Joe Crosson, Howard Hughes, Lowell Thomas Sr. and Lowell Thomas Jr., Sam White, Don Sheldon, Brad Washburn, Wally Schirra, and Bill Anders. He re-creates for readers his firsthand experiences flying top-secret missions for the Air Force, viewing the devastation of the Good Friday Earthquake in Anchorage, and the challenges of starting his own helicopter company, to name just a few. His fascinating narrative is complemented by photographs from his personal archives. Includes a list of all the different aircraft Wien has been endorsed to fly at the back of the book.Trade Review“I first had the pleasure of flying with Merrill in ’56. He is the greatest pilot I have ever shared a cockpit with. I learned a great deal from Merrill about professionalism as a pilot. Not just in how he flew, but in how he treated everyone in his crew. Merrill’s story is a must read by anyone interested in aviation and Alaska.”—Holger "Jorgy" Jorgensen, legendary Alaska bush pilot and airline captain“The best pilot anywhere. Need a Metalplane, need a Widgeon, need a B-29? Call Merrill!” —Phil Makanna, author of Ghosts: Vintage Aircraft of World War II“A book of seat-of-the-pants flying stories that keeps readers on the edge of their seat!”—Lowell Thomas Jr., author, statesman, bush pilot"It’s like listening to [Merrill]. . . Robert D. Reed Publishers Flightmares: Sky-High Humor
Book SynopsisFlightmares: Sky-High Humor is a book of quotes, jokes, cartoons, illustrations, and stories depicting humor in the airlines industry. The author, Robert D. Reed, known for his humor, contracted with a cartoonist from Malaysia named Khairal Izzuddin to put his ideas into cartoons, including the one on the front cover. A famous quote by Mark Russel, "The scientific theory I like best is that the rings of Saturn are composed entirely of lost airline luggage," is illustrated in an image created by Reed's wife, Cleone Reed. A delightful read, this book makes for a wonderful gift, especially if presented in an airline sick bag!Table of ContentsTable of Contents Foreword 11 Introduction 15 Chapter One: THE LOVE OF FLYING 17 Chapter Two: THE FEAR OF FLYING 23 Chapter Three: LUGGAGE 29 Chapter Four: PILOTS 39 Chapters Five: MECHANICS 51 Chapter Six: FLIGHT ATTENDANTS 57 Chapter Seven: AIRSICK BAGS 65 Chapter Eight: AIRLINE FOOD AND DRINKS 69 Chapter Nine: PASSENGERS 73 Chapter Ten: LANDINGS 85 Chapter Eleven: DRONES 95 Chapter Twelve: HO-HO-HO 101

Simon & Schuster His Majesty's Airship: The Life and Tragic Death
Book SynopsisFrom historian and bestselling author of the Pulitzer Prize finalist Empire of the Summer Moon comes a “captivating, thoroughly researched” (The New York Times Book Review) tale of the rise and fall of the world’s largest airship—and the doomed love story between an ambitious British officer and a married Romanian princess at its heart. The tragic fate of the British airship R101—which went down in a spectacular fireball in 1930, killing more people than died in the Hindenburg disaster seven years later—has been largely forgotten. In His Majesty’s Airship, S.C. Gwynne resurrects it in vivid detail, telling the epic story of great ambition gone terribly wrong. Airships, those airborne leviathans that occupied center stage in the world in the first half of the 20th century, were a symbol of the future. R101 was not just the largest aircraft ever to have flown and the product of the world’s most advanced engineering—she was also the lynchpin of an imperial British scheme to link by air the far-flung areas of its empire, from Australia to India, South Africa, Canada, Egypt, and Singapore. No one had ever conceived of anything like this, and R101 captivated the world. There was just one problem: beyond the hype and technological wonders, these big, steel-framed, hydrogen-filled airships were a dangerously bad idea. Gwynne’s chronicle features a cast of remarkable—and tragically flawed—characters, including Lord Christopher Thomson, the man who dreamed up the Imperial Airship Scheme and then relentlessly pushed R101 to her destruction; Princess Marthe Bibesco, the celebrated writer and glamorous socialite with whom he had a long affair; and George Herbert Scott, a national hero who was the first person to cross the Atlantic twice in any aircraft, in 1919—eight years before Lindbergh’s famous flight—but who devolved into drink and ruin. These historical figures—and the ship they built, flew, and crashed—come together in “a Promethean tale of unlimited ambitions and technical limitations, airy dreams and explosive endings” (The Wall Street Journal).

Caitlin Press Flightpaths: The Lost Journals of Amelia Earhart
Book SynopsisOn the 120th anniversary of Amelia Earhart''s birth and the 80th anniversary of her disappearance, award-winning poet, Heidi Greco revitalizes what we know about the iconic aviator through uplifting and historically mesmerizing verse. If most people were asked what they know about Amelia Earhart, they''d probably respond with something like Wasn''t she that pilot who went missing when she tried to fly around the world? Although that much is true, Earhart was so much more. She was a feminist at a time when women were just beginning to make inroads towards equality. She was a best-selling author who made appearances and speeches that inspired many. In addition, she was a pacifist, a poet, a punster ? the list could go on. She was ahead of her time in so many ways, right down to the no-nonsense clothes she wore (many of them fashioned after her own designs). To this day, her disappearance is enshrouded in mystery, with many questions remaining. Was she on a secret mission, spying for her country? Was she captured by the Japanese and held in a prison camp? Or did she and her navigator simply crash and die? The poems in this collection, presented as if written by Earhart herself, consider some of the many theories that attempt to explain her disappearance. Through logbook entries, recollections and letters, the work explores some of the various flightpaths she may have taken.

Histoire & Collections Mirage III - Tome 1
Book SynopsisDesigned in response to the official 1953 program planned to equip the Armée de l’Air with a light supersonic interceptor, the Mirage III is universally acknowledged as one of the most remarkable successes of the French post-war aircraft industry. This delta-winged fighter has a configuration which has since become the hallmark of the French aircraft builder, Dassault, and has rapidly demonstrated its qualities beyond its original frontiers, so much so that 1 400 examples of all variants came off the production lines, purchased by twenty or so countries. This very broad subject has been split into two distinct parts, the first volume dealing with the initial single-seat IIIC and two-seat IIIB versions equipped with the Atar 9B jet engine and the second deals with the improved versions of the fighter with a longer fuselage, powered by an Atar 9C and fitted with a more effective Doppler radar: the IIIE interceptor, the IIIR and RD reconnaissance versions, the 5 and 50 ground attack versions. In line with the name and aim of the collection only the planes used by the Armée de l’Air are described in these books.

Braun Publishing AG Alaska and the Airplane: A Century of Flight
Book SynopsisAlaskans were introduced to the airplane as early as 1913, when town officials in Fairbanks invited stunt flyers James and Lilly Martin to fly over the local baseball park on July 4. Because many areas are only accessible by air, this enormous state is still defined today by aviation so that aviation and Alaska have formed a very special symbiosis that is unique both in the world of geography and flying. This publication celebrates the 100th anniversary of this remarkable relationship. It looks at aviation through artifacts of flight, popular culture and other ephemera; objects that are unique to flying in Alaska and that impressively convey stories of the pioneering spirit, engineering and the North. In an extraordinary fashion, they foreground the changes flying brought to life on the ground, guiding the reader from the early days through times of war and industrialization, to the beginning of the second century in the air.

Bernard and Graefe Junkers Ju 52 military Militrversion
Book SynopsisThe Junkers Ju 52 (nicknamed Tante Ju Auntie Ju and Iron Annie) was a German transport aircraft manufactured from 1932 to 1945. It saw both civilian and military service during the 1930s and 1940s.The Ju 52 first saw military service in the Spanish Civil War, as both a bomber and transport aircraft. It was used as a bomber during the Invasion of Poland in September 1939. The Luftwaffe then relied on the Ju 52 for transport roles during World War II, including paratroop drops, most notably in the Battle of Crete in May 1941.Lightly armed, and with a top speed of only 265 km/h (165 mph) half that of a Spitfire the Ju 52 was very vulnerable to fighter attack and an escort was always necessary in combat. Many Ju 52s were shot down by anti-aircraft guns and fighters while transporting supplies, most notably during the desperate attempt to resupply the trapped German Sixth Army during the final stages of the Battle of Stalingrad in 1943.This book provides a complete modelling guide with n
