The coupling of subcultures with theories and concepts of deviance makes it a good teaching device."--Louis 'Pancho' McFarland, Chicago State University "Haenfler does not overwhelm students with advanced theoretical concepts. Yet he does effectively integrate important theoretical concepts into the chapters. Students relate to the material very well."--Gloria Gadsden, New Mexico Highlands University "Goths, Gamers, and Grrrls provides an excellent integration of central concepts in deviance and youth subcultures. • The History of Childhood

Oxford University Press Inc The History of Childhood

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhile children are a relatively unchanging fact of life, childhood is a constantly shifting concept. Through the millennia, the age at which a child becomes a youth and a youth becomes an adult has varied by gender, class, religion, ethnicity, place, and economic need. As author James Marten explores in this Very Short Introduction, so too have the realities of childhood, each life shaped by factors such as education, expectation, and conflict (or lack thereof). Indeed, ancient Roman children lived very differently than those born of today''s Generation Z. Experiences of childhood have been shaped in classrooms and on factory floors, in family homes and orphanages, and on battlefields and in front of television sets. In addressing this diversity, The History of Childhood: A Very Short Introduction takes a global, expansive view of the features of childhood that have shaped childhood throughout history and continue to shape it now. From the rules of Confucian childrearing in twelfth-century China to the struggles of children living as slaves in the Americas or as cotton mill workers in Industrial Age Britain, Marten takes his inspiration from the idea that the lives of children reveal important and sometimes uncomfortable truths about civilization.Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter One: TraditionsChapter Two: RevolutionsChapter Three: The Rise of "Modern" ChildhoodsChapter Four: Creating a Worldview of ChildhoodChapter Five: The Century of the Child and BeyondReferencesFurther ReadingIndex

Book SynopsisA systematic and comparative analysis of youth gangs and the youth gang problem in the United States, this book deals with hands-on issues of policy and programs, describing the strategies and techniques for dealing with gangs employed by criminal justice organizations, social agencies, schools, employment programs, and grass-roots organizations. Spergel combines empirical research, first-hand experience, and a solid theoretical base to expose the causes of the gang problem. Importantly, he recommends strategies that deal with gangs at a community level, using both local and national interests and resources to provide gang members with structured social and economic opportunities. He suggests a variety of specific techniques for dealing with the problem and shows how and why existing strategies have gone wrong. A practical and testable approach to a serious social problem, The Youth Gang Problem is a must-read for government officials, researchers, university instructors, and for anyonTrade ReviewLikely to be a basic resource for students of youth gangs for some time to come. * Choice *

Book SynopsisWhen Barbara Hanawalt''s acclaimed history The Ties That Bound first appeared, it was hailed for its unprecedented research and vivid re-creation of medieval life. David Levine, writing in The New York Times Book Review, called Hanawalt''s book as stimulating for the questions it asks as for the answers it provides and he concluded that one comes away from this stimulating book with the same sense of wonder that Thomas Hardy''s Angel Clare felt [:] ''The impressionable peasant leads a larger, fuller, more dramatic life than the pachydermatous king.'' Now, in Growing Up in Medieval London, Hanawalt again reveals the larger, fuller, more dramatic life of the common people, in this instance, the lives of children in London. Bringing together a wealth of evidence drawn from court records, literary sources, and books of advice, Hanawalt weaves a rich tapestry of the life of London youth during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Oxford University Press Saving Children from a Life of Crime

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisAfter decades of rigorous study in the United States and across the Western world, a great deal is known about the early risk factors for offending. High impulsiveness, low attainment, criminal parents, parental conflict, and growing up in a deprived, high-crime neighborhood are among the most important factors. There is also a growing body of high quality scientific evidence on the effectiveness of early prevention programs designed to prevent children from embarking on a life of crime. Drawing on the latest evidence, Saving Children from a Life of Crime is the first book to assess the early causes of offending and what works best to prevent it. Preschool intellectual enrichment, child skills training, parent management training, and home visiting programs are among the most effective early prevention programs. Criminologists David Farrington and Brandon Welsh also outline a policy strategy--early prevention--that uses this current research knowledge and brings into sharper focus whaTrade Review"Well researched and well reasoned, pragmatic and clearly written: A call to action grounded in science. Farrington and Welsh balance this "bad news" with invaluable "good news": there is a growing body of evidence-based practices that "work" to save troubled youngsters. Their scholarly but accessible analysis makes a compelling case that the knowledge now exists to construct a national system for early intervention. This book's main strength is that it is a 'one-stop shop' for everything we need to know about risk factors for delinquency and effective early prevention programmes. It is very well researched and the information is both up-to-date and trustworthy. * British Journal of Criminology *The current willingness to allow at-risk children to develop unimpeded into serious, chronic offenders represents an inexcusable policy failure and threat to public safety. David Hawkins, Endowed Professor of Prevention, School of Social Work, University of Washington *This volume has essential, well-summarized information for decision makers, policy officials, and practitioners interested in designing and evaluating programs to reduce juvenile delinquency. Based on a sweeping survey of the scientific evidence for risk and protective factors, the expert authors succinctly indicate which programs have the highest efficacy in preventing and reducing juvenile delinquency and which programs more than pay for themselves. This volume is the most convincing and the most practical of all the books on reducing juvenile delinquency published over the past decades. * Rolf Loeber, Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry, and Professor of Psychology and Epidemiology, University of Pittsburgh *Farrington and Welsh have produced a timely and important work for all self-respecting democracies. Every careful student of human development since Plato understands that preventing crime as a way of life starts at conception. Farrington and Welsh offer the up-to-date knowledge needed to change outdated policies. We cannot afford to continue to lock up offenders as if we were still in the early 19th century. Giving support to at-risk families and children is the only rational and humane way of dealing with crime as a way of life. • Perfect Children Growing Up on the Religious Fringe

Oxford University Press Perfect Children Growing Up on the Religious Fringe

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisChildren born and raised on the religious fringe are a distinctive yet largely unstudied social phenomenon -they are irreversibly shaped by the experience having been thrust into a radical religious culture by birth. The religious group is all encompassing. It accounts for their family, their school, social networks, and everything that prepares them for their adult life. The inclusion of a second generation of participants raises new concerns and legal issues. Perfect Children examines the ways new religious movements adapt to a second generation, how children are socialized, what happens to these children as they mature, and how their childhoods have affected them.Amanda van Twist conducted over 50 in-depth interviews with individuals born into new religious groups, some of whom have stayed in the group, some of whom have left. She also visited the groups, their schools and homes, and analyzed support websites maintained by those who left the religious groups that raised them. She also attended conferences held by NGOs concerned with the welfare of children in cults. The main groups she studies include the Bruderhof, Scientology, the Family International, the Unification Church, and the International Society for Krishna Consciousness.Children born into new religions often start life as special children believed to be endowed with heightened spiritual capabilities. But as they mature into society at large they acquire other labels. Those who stay in the group are usually labeled as goodies and innovators. Those who leave tend to be labeled as baddies or seen as troubled. Whether they stay or leave, children raised on the religious fringe experience a unique form of segregation in adulthood.Van Twist analyzes group behavior on an organizational/institutional level as well as individual behavior within groups, and how these affect one another. Her study also raises larger questions about religious freedom in the light of the State''s responsibility towards children, and children''s rights against the rights of parents to raise their children within their religion.Trade ReviewThe book overall breaks new ground in an under-researched area... This is a must-read for everyone in the field. * Lukas Pokorny, Religious Studies Review *Perfect Children is an insightful and sometimes disturbing study of youth growing up in new or sectarian religious movements. The author shows us that the experimental project of rearing perfect children comes with a very imperfect road map. With the best of intentions and noblest of spiritual pursuits, the introduction of children into the group changes everything. Amanda van Eck Duymaer van Twist offers us a window into the intimate lives of these offspring, with all the trials, challenges, and choices they face. This work is a unique and vital contribution to the research literature on new religions. * Stuart Wright, Professor of Sociology, Lamar University *This is a very good book. I recommend it not only to scholars of new religious movements for whom it is a must, but also to anyone interested in the dynamics of the socialization of children in minority religions or in nonreligious groups that are on the fringe of society. * Eileen Barker, Sociology of Religion *Table of ContentsPart I: Sects and Their Children ; Introduction ; Chapter 1: Sects, Children, and Society ; Chapter 2: Leadership and Discipline ; Chapter 3: Points of Conflict: The Children of God and the State ; Part II: What Happened?: The Aftermath of Growing Up in a Sectarian Group ; Chapter 4: What Is Perceived as Successful Socialization? ; Chapter 5: The Young Members Who Stay ; Part III: The Young Members Who Leave ; Chapter 6: Support ; Chapter 7: In The Wilderness ; Conclusion ; Notes ; Index

Book SynopsisLaunched by healthcare providers in January 2018, the #aHand2Hold campaign confronted the Quebec government''s practice of separating children from their families during medical evacuation airlifts, which disproportionately affected remote and northern Indigenous communities. Pediatric emergency physician Samir Shaheen-Hussain''s captivating narrative of this successful campaign, which garnered unprecedented public attention and media coverage, seeks to answer lingering questions about why such a cruel practice remained in place for so long. In doing so it serves as an indispensable case study of contemporary medical colonialism in Quebec. Fighting for a Hand to Hold exposes the medical establishment''s role in the displacement, colonization, and genocide of Indigenous peoples in Canada. Through meticulously gathered government documentation, historical scholarship, media reports, public inquiries, and personal testimonies, Shaheen-Hussain connects the draconian medevac practice with oTrade Review"Anyone who thinks that racism in Canada is more benign than it is in the United States--or that Canada has left its genocidal policies in the past--must read Samir Shaheen-Hussain's new book. Fighting for A Hand to Hold is an engaging and well-documented analysis of medical colonialism that deserves further discussion and, most important, action." Canadian Dimension"Fighting for a Hand to Hold is important in encouraging us to reflect and rethink it. Samir's call for the decolonisation of health care would entail reparations for Indigenous nations, which includes the return of land and sovereignty over the labour of care. Indigenous land defenders fighting colonial development, Indigenous projects of food sovereignty and agroecology, and the resurgence of Indigenous traditional knowledge, including practices of healing, all point to the importance of reclaiming sovereignty over care as pathways for decolonising health care." Race & Class"Fighting for a Hand to Hold reveals systemic challenges through an approach that offers a holistic look at the structures that hold injustices in place. Inspired by patients, Shaheen-Hussain examines the impacts of medical colonialism on the lives of Indigenous young people. This book made me think about how we can create the change that is necessary to address the anti-Indigenous racism of Canada's past and present." Margo Greenwood, The Lancet

Firmly anchored in theories of child-rearing and pedagogy which emerged during the nineteenth century, Peterson’s study provides the first full-length analysis of Chekhov’s child characters. In so doing, she also exposes the nuanced role human development plays in Chekhov’s art as a whole.” Modern Language Review

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewBRAVO! This is a much needed, informative, and engaging book. The authors, Rosalind C. Barnett (a highly respected research psychologist) and Caryl Rivers (a skilled journalist), take the reader on a critical and clarifying tour of claims about categorical, biologically-based sex differences used to justify the move towards more publicly funded single-sex schooling. This book is a significant contribution to an area of heated debate and policy struggle. Parents, teachers, and policy-makers can turn to it as a reliable guide through a thicket of hype and over-claiming. The authors do an excellent job of unpacking empirical assertions, exposing shabby "science," unfounded generalizations and jumps of logic. -- Barrie Thorne, Professor of Sociology, and Gender and Women's Studies, University of California, Berkeley. Author of Gender Play: Girls and Boys in School. The gloves are off. Rivers and Barnett provide a convincing case that much of what parents, teachers, and the general public know about differences between girls and boys is based on highly publicized accounts of shoddy and misleading science. They provide readers with an understanding of the ways girls and boys are similar and different and how we can use that knowledge to raise happy, healthy, and successful children. -- Diane F. Halpern, past-president, American Psychological Association, and author of Sex Differences in Cognitive Abilities (fourth edition) A bracing antidote to conventional wisdom. Like Malcolm Gladwell, Rivers and Barnett take readers into the world of research and emerge with surprising and unsettling conclusions. Teachers, educators, parents, journalists, and researchers would do well to read this book before hopping on the bandwagon about the 'differences' between girls and boys. -- Jonathan Kaufman, Pulitzer-Prize-winning reporter and education editor at Bloomberg News The Truth About Girls and Boys is exactly that-the real story behind over-hyped claims of sex difference and their harming of girls and boys. Rivers and Barnett expose the sloppy journalism that has allowed pseudoscientific ideas to percolate into our collective beliefs about gender development. Parents, teachers, and policymakers will do well to read this book, to rescue today's girls and boys from false claims of 'hardwired' differences limiting their learning and stunting their futures. -- Lise Eliot, author of Pink Brain, Blue Brain: How Small Differences Grow Into Troublesome Gaps and What We Can Do About It Caryl Rivers and Rosalind C. Barnett's dissection of the ways tired stereotypes are being repackaged as 'science' is urgently important. It must be read immediately by parents, educators-anyone who believes children should develop their full intellectual and emotional potential. -- Peggy Orenstein, author of Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches from the Front Lines of the New Girlie-Girl Culture The Truth About Girls and Boys is a must read for anyone vouchsafed with the upbringing, care, teaching, or social policy that impacts our most precious legacy: our children-girls and boys. We must read this 'game changing' book, ponder its meaning, and not put it down until we move from our present position of empty-minded acceptance to open-minded and critical thinking. Rivers and Barnett throw out a sturdy life preserver to bring us back from the harm of mangled pseudoscience to the shores of thoughtful, gender equitable understanding. -- William S. Pollack, author of Real Boys: Rescuing Our Boys from the Myths of Boyhood Rivers and Barnett provide insightful examples to show how sex stereotypes ranging from aggression to sexualized body images are based on inaccurate and often harmful generalizations. They make a powerful case against a key rationale for sex-segregated education - that girls and boys learn differently, and therefore should be taught differently and in sex segregated classes. Instead, they conclude that heterogeneous groups and attention to individuals will do more to maximize opportunities and improve society. -- Sue Klein, Ed.D, Education Equity DirectorFeminist Majority Foundation This is an excellent and important book, clearly written yet also packed with documentation. • The Future of Us

Columbia University Press The Future of Us

Book SynopsisIn this memoir, the renowned pediatrician and children’s advocate Irwin Redlener draws on poignant personal experiences to investigate the nation’s healthcare safety net and the programs that too often fail to protect and nurture our most vulnerable kids. Redlener argues that we must drastically change our approach to meeting the needs of children.Trade ReviewMotivating and immensely uplifting; an engaging intimate memoir about impassioned connectedness with children in dire need. * Kirkus Reviews *Illuminating. * Journal of Children and Poverty *A deeply moving memoir and call to action. * San Francisco Review of Books *As cofounder with Dr. Redlener of Children’s Health Fund, I have watched him grapple for more than thirty years with the problem of inadequate health care for our poor and working-class children. In clear, often emotional language, Redlener lays out the costs borne by children and our society of failing to resolve these health access issues. Still an optimistic realist, he offers solutions in The Future of Us that are both feasible and affordable. -- Paul SimonThe Future of Us will inform you, fascinate you, and most of all, inspire you. Join Dr. Irwin Redlener, America’s leading advocate for children’s health, as he makes his life journey from rural America to medical school in Europe and the U.S., to treating America’s poor children in the South during the civil rights era to his remarkable creativity and national leadership in founding and leading the Children’s Health Fund and the Children’s Hospital in New York City. Irwin and his partner and wife Karen have improved the health and life prospects of millions upon millions of children, but Redlener never flags in his efforts to do more, and to remind us—with great urgency and eloquence—how much better we can and must do for America’s and the world’s poor and vulnerable children. -- Jeffrey D. Sachs, University Professor of Sustainable Development, Columbia UniversityIn this incredibly personal and readable story of the activist pediatrician who created the big blue bus and brought comprehensive medical care to underserved, at-risk children all over the United States, Redlener argues that by eradicating our differences of opportunity, we can increase the well-being, prosperity, and potential of all Americans. Read this, and become inspired yourself! -- Julianne MooreThis is the book our troubled era has been waiting for. In his beautifully written, fearless exploration of the lives of vulnerable children, Dr. Redlener offers us profound insights into ourselves and our society. The Future of Us is not just wise and wonderful, it’s essential for everyone who cares about the well-being of our children and the nation as a whole. -- Bob Herbert, Distinguished Senior Fellow at Demos and former columnist for the New York TimesThe world needs to listen to the message of the amazing Irwin Redlener—that every child, no matter where and whom they are born to, deserves a chance in life. It truly is “the future of us.” -- Carolyn Miles, president and CEO, Save the ChildrenIn an engaging and heartfelt manner, The Future of Us provides snapshots of the appalling conditions facing children living in poverty in America, and then presents much-needed practical solutions to help them. I highly recommend it. -- Dan Klores, Peabody Award–winning filmmakerExcellently done, and will be an inspiration to those who read it. It particularly addresses the need to form collaborations with others involved in caring for children in their communities. I cannot name another individual who could have written this book, considering Redlener's vast experience. -- Michael Kappy, University of Colorado School of MedicineA must-read for anyone who loves and cares about children and our future. * Utica Dispatch *Ultimately, The Future of Us isn't a memoir about Redlener but a tale told to inspire others to engage in issues, to show them that politics and policy isn't some airy thing divorced from their experience. * Misanthropester *An extraordinary read from cover to cover, The Future of Us is one of those compelling personal stories that will linger in the mind and memory of the reader long after the book itself as been finished. * Midwest Book Review (review of hardcover edition) *Hard-hitting and personal, The Future of Us makes an impassioned plea for change based not only on study but on personal experience, arguing that America needs to drastically change its viewpoints and attitudes towards social programs and helping kids. * Donovans Bookshelf *One of the most important sections of the revised edition is the afterward advising the best ways to champion children’s health throughout this long-lasting pandemic. Columbia University Press Raising Chinas Revolutionaries

Book SynopsisMargaret Mih Tillman offers a novel perspective on the political and scientific dimensions of experiments with early childhood education. Raising China’s Revolutionaries is an important work of institutional and transnational history that illuminates the evolution of modern concepts of childhood in twentieth-century China.Trade ReviewMargaret Tillman has written an excellent book. Raising China's Revolutionaries demonstrates how policies regarding childcare and child welfare were central to the formation of the modern Chinese state, and suggests how the mobilization and deployment of aid and care facilitated elite professionalization and formation of a range of social institutions that had lasting relevance. The book promises to intervene with great impact in a number of different historiographical debates in the China field and global history more broadly. -- Robert Culp, Bard CollegeInformative, instructive, inspiring. Margaret Mih Tillman's book is an important contribution to the research of childhood socialization in modern China. -- Thomas O. Höllmann, Ludwig Maximilian University of MunichSince the late Qing there had been a general belief among Chinese revolutionaries and reformers that China’s modernization must begin with the construction of a modern childhood. As a result, a great variety of ideas and institutions were proposed and developed in the realm of child education from the 1930s to the 1950s. This book, Raising China’s Revolutionaries, is a rigorous and vivid account of this important historical development based on the author’s comprehensive and penetrating study of the numerous archival and other primary sources as well as her personal experiences as a visiting preschooler in the Chinese system. -- Ying-shih Yu, Professor Emeritus, Princeton University, co-winner of the John W. Kluge Prize and the inaugural winner of the Tang PrizeTillman writes for her peers, and she displays incredible command of the historiography on which she draws. Her rich and deft incorporation of insights from the wider field shows that research on childhood is intimately connected to all the other concerns within the field of Chinese history. -- Melissa A. Brzycki * Journal of Asian Studies *Based on solid archival research, this book models careful historical analysis and argumentation. It is highly accessible and will be useful to readers who are interested in understanding the modern development of early childhood education in China, but also to those who are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of state-society relations during China's modern trajectory. * Historian *Table of ContentsPrefaceAcknowledgmentsAbbreviations in TextIntroductionPart I: The Science of Sentiment1.
