Book SynopsisA leading psychoanalyst shares his experiences working with schizophrenic patients to show how effective talk therapy can be as a treatment Many schizophrenics experience their condition as one of radical incarceration, mind-altering medications, isolation, and dehumanization. At a time when the treatment of choice is anti-psychotic medication, world-renowned psychoanalyst Christopher Bollas asserts that schizophrenics can be helped by much more humane treatments, and that they have a chance to survive and even reverse the process if they have someone to talk to them regularly and for a sustained period, soon after their first breakdown. In this sensitive and evocative narrative, he draws on his personal experiences working with schizophrenics since the 1960's. He offers his interpretation of how schizophrenia develops, typically in the teens, as an adaptation in the difficult transition to adulthood. With tenderness, Bollas depicts schizophrenia as an understandable way of responding to our precariousness in a highly unpredictable world. He celebrates the courage of the children he has worked with and reminds us that the wisdom inherent in human beingsto turn to conversation with others when in distressis the fundamental foundation of any cure for human conflict.Trade Review"This book is a remarkable look at a confounding illness and the practices of one seasoned, passionate analyst."—Publishers Weekly"The author's perspective embraces personal, social, and political life on a vulnerable planet. His expertise extends to civilization generally, making an esoteric specialty relevant to human improvement in general. The book is suited for a general audience interested in psychology applied to the most challenging dilemmas."—Library Journal, Starred Review". . . immediately intriguing, perpetually enlightening, often very moving and, as is so often the case in the best examples of psycho-science writing, compassionate and hopeful."—Big Issue"Bollas’s new book is his warmest and most accessible yet . . . a passionate and elegant account of his belief and experience that people diagnosed with schizophrenia can be treated through psychoanalysis."—Gillian Ingram, Therapy Today“In this sensitive and evocative narrative, psychoanalyst Christopher Bollas draws on his personal experiences of working with people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia to offer an interpretation of how it develops as an understandable way of responding to our precariousness in a highly unpredictable world.”—Therapy TodayFinalist for the American Board & Academy of Psychoanalysis Book Prize in the Authored Books Category"Christopher Bollas has written a beautiful, humane, and profoundly moving book. It tells us not just about the world of schizophrenia but also about what it is for all of us to be human, struggling not to be too frightened to live in a world of chance events. Its stories of the work of therapy illustrate the patient effort that is involved in respecting another person, and, indeed, offer a paradigm of love."—Martha C. Nussbaum, The University of Chicago"Imaginative, heartfelt and moving, this is a beautiful book. Bollas' compassion and respect for his patients is palpable on these pages. The result is a sense of shared humanity, understanding and even hope. There's misery in When the Sun Bursts, and yet you will come away feeling ignited and consoled."—Stephen Grosz, author of The Examined Life"If you want a book that will give you the living, vibrant, painful process of truly working with schizophrenia, then read this book. Christopher Bollas is famous in the world of psychoanalysis and beyond for the way he pushes us to the limits of possible thought. Here, in the most resonant, sensitive and even poetic writing—writing which teaches us anew what it really means to listen—Bollas makes a crucial clinical and political intervention into the increasingly vexed question of how to approach mental disturbance in our time."—Jacqueline Rose, author of Women in Dark Times"Christopher Bollas writes with dazzling insight into the embattled mental world of schizophrenia. A profound and moving meditation on the tribulations of human subjectivity."—Barbara Taylor, author of The Last Asylum: a Memoir of Madness in Our Times (2014)"In this absorbing, elegant, and uplifting new book, Christopher Bollas takes the reader on a personal odyssey through schizophrenia. In an era of biological reductionism, Bollas reminds us that no one we encounter in our work is completely out of reach by another human being. We all owe Bollas a debt of gratitude for keeping alive the flame with this extraordinary contribution."—Glen O. Gabbard, Baylor College of Medicine“In this sensitive and evocative narrative, psychoanalyst Christopher Bollas draws on his personal experiences of working with people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia to offer an interpretation of how it develops as an understandable way of responding to our precariousness in a highly unpredictable world.”—Therapy Today * Therapy Today *

  • Cambridge University Press A Transdiagnostic Approach to Obsessions Compulsions and Related Phenomena

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisObsessions, compulsions and related phenomena occur across a wide spectrum of neuropsychiatric disorders. The boundaries between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and other psychopathological phenomena, such as delusions, impulsions and habits, remain unclear. Further, the subclinical symptoms of OCD are highly prevalent, causing significant impact but yet are poorly understood. To help address these limitations, recent debates have highlighted the importance of a transdiagnostic approach to psychiatry. This book integrates what is currently known about obsessionality, compulsivity and the boundaries of OCD and related disorders and unveils areas that are worthy of future research. Using a transdiagnostic framework, it provides a comprehensive review of the key issues to understanding the diagnosis and evaluation of OCD and related disorders, as well as describing how the clinician can treat OCD and its manifold presentations. Edited by leading specialists in the field, this book offers a global perspective to the diagnosis and treatment of these disorders.Trade Review'Top researchers from across the world have contributed to making A Transdiagnostic Approach to Obsessions, Compulsions and Related Phenomena the most comprehensive text published on this topic. The book, which is backed by the latest academic literature, provides a wide-ranging approach to treatment that incorporates psychopathologic, neurobiological, clinical and therapeutic elements. Obsessive-compulsive disorder and associated mental illnesses can be difficult to diagnose. The book provides immense value in providing clinicians and researchers alike with the nuances necessary to identify and help patients to the best extent possible. It will undoubtedly be an indispensable reference document for professionals in this field for years to come.' Antonio E. Nardi, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil'Professors Fontenelle and Yücel compile an impressive comprehensive and authoritative source on the underpinnings and correlates of OCD and its related disorders. They advance cutting-edge reviews valuable to both clinicians and researchers. This volume represents a current and definitive reference work for these conditions. Uniquely, it also examines cross-diagnostic perspectives involving various contemporary nosologic systems … with respect to classification, treatment and prevention. Additionally, future investigative directions are presented for the multifaceted aspects of these disorders.' Edward C. Lauterbach, Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurology, Former Chief, Division of Adult and Geriatric Psychiatry, Founding Director Emeritus, Center for Translational Studies in Neurodegenerative Disease, Mercer University, Georgia, US'This seminal volume covers virtually all aspects of obsessive-compulsive and related disorders from an innovative transdiagnostic perspective. Much more work is needed to advance this emerging field. But given the expertise of the more than sixty authors from across the globe, I am confident that this volume will become an invaluable resource for years to come both for practitioners as well as for researchers across a broad range of disciplines.' Book SynopsisTrade Review“The idea of power—of influence, of control, of bending an arc toward your will—is fascinating. And Amos Barshad drops you into a discussion of it here, in both of its forms, good and bad (mostly bad), with an almost offensive ease. And being able to do that is its own form of power, really; an irony that does not appear lost on Barshad. Buy this book.” -- Shea Serrano * New York Times bestselling author of The Rap Year Book and Basketball (and Other Things) *“No One Man Should Have All That Power is not really the examination of a specific person. It’s an examination of a specific type of person, and ultimately the dissection of how a specific type of person can warp the world to his advantage, often for motives that only become clear in retrospect. This is mostly a book about shadow manipulation. But it’s also a book about how certain conspiracies are real, simply because they aren’t conspiracies at all.” -- Chuck Klosterman * New York Times bestselling author of Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs *“In No One Man Should Have All That Power, Amos Barshad encourages us to alternate between seeing the people behind the power as vulnerable human beings and as evil masterminds. You’ll never look at politicians and tastemakers the same again. Best enjoyed in small and intense pieces, this is a great snack for hungry minds.” -- Dr. Julia Shaw * author of Evil: The Science Behind Humanity's Dark Side *Each portrait provides an incisive dissection of the acquisition and maintenance of power. * The Nation *

Book SynopsisSchizophrenia is a major psychiatric disorder characterized by a disruption in neuropsychological function that usually manifests itself between the age of 10 and 35. This book provides a broad overview of the domains, severity, and course of neuropsychological functioning in schizophrenia patients. Genetic variations and markers can serve as a diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic tool for the patients. As such, the authors describe and summarize the blood-based biomarkers of schizophrenia from the diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic points of view. The closing study aims to determine the role of internalized stigma in the presence and severity of fear of negative evaluation in patients with schizophrenia, specifically hypothesizing that a higher perceived discrimination will be the most important predictor.Table of ContentsPreface; Neuropsychological Functioning in Schizophrenia Patients; Blood Biomarkers in Schizophrenia: A Focus on Genetics; The Role of Internalized Stigma in the Fear of Negative Evaluation in Patients with Schizophrenia; Index.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisSchizophrenia is a chronic disorder that impacts a broad range of a person''s social and developmental functioning. Until the recent past, most of the research done on schizophrenia did not include children or adolescents who suffer from the disorder. During adolescence, important changes take place in brain development. These changes make adolescence a period of both vulnerability and opportunity. Emergence of psychosis and schizophrenia may be associated with abnormal brain development during adolescence. This book discusses the findings of studies that focus on abnormal brain development during the premorbid period of psychosis and schizophrenia. Cognitive neuroscience constructs of visuospatial memory and working memory are associated with adult- and adolescent-onset schizophrenia. This book reviews the existing literature on the topic and explores the nature of and association between visuospatial memory in adolescent onset schizophrenia. The prevalence of psychotic symptoms in the general population, particularly in children and adolescents, is also explored. The significance of psychotic symptoms in relation to psychiatric disorders, such as depression and anxiety, and its relation to social factors, such as childhood abuse is examined. To deal with schizophrenic young patients in a hospital, psychoanalytical psychotherapeutic "teamwork" is reviewed. The transference relation between patient and therapist, and what it entails, is also discussed.

  • Handbook of Aggressive Behavior Research

Nova Science Publishers Inc Handbook of Aggressive Behavior Research

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAggression is a complex social behaviour with multiple causes. In psychology, as well as other social and behavioural sciences, aggression refers to behaviour between members of the same species that is intended to cause pain or harm. Aggression takes a variety of forms among humans and can be physical, mental, or verbal. Aggression should not be confused with assertiveness however, although the terms are often used interchangeably. There are two broad categories of aggression. These include hostile, affective, or retaliatory aggression and instrumental, predatory, or goal-oriented aggression. Empirical research indicates that there is a critical difference between the two, both psychologically and physiologically. Some research indicates that people with tendencies toward affective aggression have lower IQs than those with tendencies toward predatory aggression. If only considering physical aggression, males tend to be more aggressive than females. This new book gathers the latest research from around the world in this field.

Book SynopsisThe concept of sexual deviance refers to the nature of sexual behavior that is nonconforming with societal norms or expectations, is maladaptive and interferes with the individual''s functioning. Sexual deviance is also often perceived as harmful or even dangerous. In most cases, it manifests through the use of force, sexual focus on children or other anomalous activities and targets. It encompasses a vast range of atypical or aberrant sexual behaviors that may or may not be formalised into a law. The author of this book adheres to the theory that although sexual violence may be motivated by opportunistic factors, the common denominator in most instances of sexual abuse is sexual deviance. The results of the authors'' research indicate that most male and female subjects interpret sexual deviance as a multi-causal phenomenon; however, juvenile sex offenders are more likely to externalise these causes rather than attribute them to internal factors. This book is divided into three major parts. The first part focuses on critical review of different theories of etiology of sexual deviance, sex offender characteristics and treatment implications; the second explores attribution of sexually abnormal behavior and its measurement; and the third describes the findings of the study and their relevance to the treatment of sexual abusers.

Book SynopsisSelf-efficacy and self-compassion are psychological skills that form the basis for resilience, success, and overall quality of life, and as such understanding how best to implement these skills is essential for well-being. This volume includes six chapters that explore the concepts of self-efficacy and self-compassion from several perspectives. Chapter One investigates the predictive value of pre-academic self-efficacy for academic self-efficacy six months into the Danish teacher education program. Chapter Two provides a theoretical foundation for educator self-efficacy and current empirical evidence exploring self-efficacy of educators who are working in schools implementing tiered systems. Chapter Three examines reciprocal relations between academic self-efficacy and elements of achievement in math, with persistence as a mediator. Chapter Four synthesizes and examines research evidence on the relationship between parental self-compassion and parents' mental health, analyses the role of parental self-compassion in parenting practices, and investigates the effects of parents' self-compassion on children's outcomes. Chapter Five reviews recent findings concerning self-compassion from a trait/state perspective based on a development schema theory combined with a state of mind approach. Lastly, Chapter Six explores self-efficacy and its association with demographic characteristics in Greek families of university students with or without members with special educational needs and disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.Table of ContentsPreface; Predicting Student Teachers Academic Learning Self-Efficacy at the Second Semester from Their Pre-Academic Learning Self-Efficacy; Educator Self-Efficacy in Tiered Systems: Theory and Practice; Mediated Relationships between Academic Self-Efficacy and Characteristics of Math Performance Differences between Boys and Girls and Students from Immigrant and Non-Immigrant Backgrounds; Self-Compassion and Parenting; A State-Trait Approach to Self-Compassion: Is It a Schema or a State of Mind?; Self-Efficacy and Demographics of Greek Families with and without Members with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities during the COVID-19 Pandemic; Index.

Book SynopsisIn this book, Paul Campos argues that the American worship of law and legality can at times become so pathological that it comes to resemble a type of legal madness, or Jurismania. Campos offers an intensely critical look at the role of law and legal reason in American society, and concludes that much of what is called the rule of law resembles a culturally sanctioned form of obsessive-compulsive behaviour.Trade ReviewJurismania provides a sharp reminder that the law cannot solve all problems, and serves up a chilling vision of a demented world in which regulation is all-pervasive and where respect for the law is lost through its misuse. It is a cautionary tale upon which we could do worse than reflect. * Roderick Munday, Justice of the Peace Volume 163 *

Book SynopsisHow can we better understand and treat those suffering from schizophrenia and manic-depressive illnesses? This important new book takes us into the world of those suffering from such disorders. Using self descriptions, its emphasis is not on how mental health professionals view sufferers, but on how the patients themselves experience their disorder. Central to the book is the idea that schizophrenic persons live like disembodied spirits or deanimated bodies. As disembodied spirits, they feel like abstract entities which contemplate their own existence and the world from outside. As deanimated bodies, schizophrenic people feel deprived of the possibility of living personal experiences - perceptions, thoughts, emotions - as their own. A new volume in the International Perspectives in Philosophy and Psychiatry series, this book will be of great interest to all those working with sufferers from such disorders - helping them to better understand their mental lives and providing important inTrade ReviewIn this marvellous book, Stanghellini reinvigorates and resurrects psychopathology as more than just the listing of symptoms, re-presenting it as the 'science of the meanings of abnormal human phenomena' . . . Book SynopsisPersecutory delusions, the unfounded beliefs that others intend harm to the individual, are a major psychiatric problem. They are a common feature of severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, delusional disorder and bipolar disorder, often lead to admission to psychiatric hospital, and are a cause of considerable distress to patients and carers. However, increasingly it is recognised that persecutory delusions reflect the severe end of a spectrum of paranoia, which also encompasses beliefs and worries about threats from others that are common in the general population. In the last ten years an increasing number of researchers and clinicians have focussed on explaining paranoid experience in both clinical and non-clinical populations, with fascinating results. This recent research is presented for the first time as a book. In this landmark publication, the three major authorities in the field bring together the current knowledge about the assessment, understanding, and treatment ofTrade Review'Persecutory Delusions is an outstanding book that provides a unique update on the assessment, biological and psychological processes, and treatment of this important clinical phenomenon. Freeman, Bentall, and Garety, all seasoned clinicians who have also made valuable contributions to theories of delusions, have assembled world experts on this topic for the first time in this welcomed volume. The state-of-the-art summary of research, theory, and clinical practice related to persecutory delusions make this book a critical resource for anyone seeking to understand or treat psychosis.' * Professor Kim T. Mueser, Dartmouth Medical School *' Delusions have long been known to psychiatry - but have largely been considered a subset of 'psychosis'. However, over the last decade a range of scientists, psychologists, phenomenologists, pharmacologists, and imagers have been studying delusions in their own right, and social epidemiologists and geneticists have been looking for their causes in clinical populations and wider society. This book is the first to pull together these different perspectives under one cover. For scientists and practitioners who study and treat psychosis this is a remarkable resource. This will be a "go to" reference book for developing a comprehensive understanding of delusions.' * Professor Shitij Kapur, Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London *Table of ContentsASSESSMENT, EPIDEMIOLOGY AND PROGNOSIS; THEORY - PSYCHOLOGICAL PROCESSES; THEORY - BIOLOGICAL PROCESSES; TREATMENT - OVERVIEWS; TREATMENT - THERAPY EXAMPLES

Book SynopsisOvereating and obesity are on the rise. Despite public health warnings, availability of diet books and programs, and the stigma associated with obesity, many people find it difficult to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight. While there are many books on the topic of caloric or need-based eating, obesity and overeating can also result from eating that is not driven by hunger. Recent research found that excess food intake is largely driven by the palatability of food and the pleasure derived from eating. Hedonic Eating: How the Pleasure of Food Affects Our Brain and Behavior will appeal to scientists, medical doctors, psychologists, counselors and students taking specialized courses that cover appetite. It will also appeal to the general public intersted in learning more about topics, including brain reward-related mechanisms associated with food intake, eating behaviors resulting from these changes in the brain, obesity, and overeating, and science-based approaches to combat the cTable of ContentsForward ; Preface ; Acknowledgements ; Chapter 1. Book SynopsisBorderline personality disorder (BPD) is a potentially severely debilitating psychiatric diagnosis that may affect up to 2% of the general population. Hallmarks of BPD include impulsivity, emotional instability, and poor self-image, and those with BPD have increased risk for self-harm and suicide.Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving (STEPPS) brings together research findings and information on implementation and best practices for a group treatment program for outpatients with BPD. A five-month long program easily learned and delivered by therapists from a wide range of theoretical orientations, STEPPS combines cognitive behavioral therapy, emotion management and behavioral skills training, and psychoeducation with a systems component that involves professional care providers, family, friends, and significant others of persons with BPD. The book provides a detailed description of the program, reviews the body of evidence supporting its use and implementation, and describes its dissemination worldwide and in different settings. Empirical data show that STEPPS is effective and produces clinically important improvement in mood and behavior, while reducing health care utilization. Unique among programs for BPD, STEPPS has been exhaustively studied in correctional systems (both prisons and community corrections), where it is shown to be as effective as in community settings. This volume will be a valuable guide to those in psychiatry, psychology, social work, nursing, and the counseling professions who treat people with BPD.Trade Review"Psychotherapy for borderline personality disorder is now known to be effective. But it tends to be lengthy, expensive, and unavailable. STEPPS provides a brief, cost-effective package that should be a default option for treating these difficult patients. This book, which describes the concepts, methods, and research support behind STEPPS, is timely and welcome."--Joel Paris, MD, Professor of Psychiatry, McGill University, and author, A Concise Guide to Personality Disorders "This book brings together the leading clinicians and researchers working with STEPPS across the globe and provides an essential guide to implementing a much needed front-line intervention for borderline personality disorder."--Carla Sharp, PhD, Professor and Director of Clinical Training, Department of Psychology, The University of Houston "Dr. Black and Ms. Blum have edited a very thoughtful and informative book on the STEPPS program for people with borderline personality disorder. STEPPS is a very well designed and structured treatment, which could help explain why it has been rapidly expanding in its global reach. This book reviews the compelling evidence base for the program and makes an important contribution to the care of these challenging patients."--S. Charles Schulz, MD, Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of Minnesota Medical School "The development of STEPPS has been a godsend. Even in the age of evidence-based treatments for borderline personality disorder, the large majority of sufferers have no access to adequate care. With its intelligent focus on psychoeducation in a group setting, STEPPS has been able to fill in the gap in many areas. This book will extend that reach. STEPPS fulfills the critical public need of providing a basic treatment for BPD that is sufficient for some patients and the first step in a longer trajectory for others."--Frank E. Yeomans, MD, PhD, Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry, and Director of Training, Personality Disorders Institute, Weill Medical College of Cornell University "In treating borderline personality disorder in community mental health settings, it is vital that evidence-based protocols for treating suicidal behavior be utilized. For treatment settings unable to implement DBT, strong consideration should be given to implementing STEPPS. For this reason, this book is recommended for those who work for or administer community mental health centers, as well mental health programs in other settings, such as correctional settings or group practices." --PsycCRITIQUESTable of ContentsForeword by John Livesley Preface About the Editors Contributors Chapter 1 - Overview of STEPPS: History and Implementation Nancee Blum, Don St. John, Bruce Pfohl, and Donald W.
