Oxford University Press Signalers and Receivers
Book SynopsisIn most terrestrial and aquatic habitats, the vast majority of animals transmitting and receiving communicative signals are arthropods. This book presents the story of how this important group of animals use pheromones, sound, vibration, and light for sexual and social communication. Because of their small to minute body size most arthropods have problems sending and receiving acoustic and optical information, each of which have their own severe constraints. Because of these restraints they have developed chemical signaling which is not similarly limited by scale. Presenting the latest theoretical and experimental findings from studies of signaling, it suggests that close parallels between arthropods and vertebrates reflect a very limited number of solutions to problems in behavior that are available within the confines of physical laws.Trade ReviewIn summary, this is a valuable addition to the literature on animal communication at the introductory level. Greenfield's book is worthwile precisely because it is brief. I will recommend this book for undergraduate courses and for the generalist reader who wants to know more about this interesting subject. * Nature *On nearly every page there is an intriguing example from nature, a clear explanation, a thoughtful and novel commentary, a thread leading in an unexpected direction. * American Entomologist *The drive to organize a broad range of knowledge into a unified, comprehensible scheme is combined with an equal fascination with the details of how each particular system works and the problems that needed to be solved to make it work. This makes for rewarding reading from start to finish. * American Entomologist *Table of Contents1. Communication in a Lilliputian World ; 2. Signal Theory and the Language of Communication ; 3. Oxford University Press, USA Insect Physiological Ecology
Book SynopsisThis book provides a modern, synthetic overview of interactions between insects and their environments from a physiological perspective that integrates information across a range of approaches and scales. It shows that evolved physiological responses at the individual level are translated into coherent physiological and ecological patterns at larger, even global scales. This is done by examining in detail the ways in which insects obtain resources from the environment, process these resources in various ways, and turn the results into energy which allows them to regulate their internal environment as well as cope with environmental extremes of temperature and water availability. The book demonstrates that physiological responses are not only characterized by substantial temporal variation, but also shows coherent variation across several spatial scales. At the largest, global scale, there appears to be substantial variation associated with the hemisphere in which insects are found. SucTrade ReviewThis exceptional book is clearly written, well organized, and rich in data from primary sources. As well as being suitable for professional biologists, this novel volume would provide a stimulating basis for an upper-level undergraduate or graduate-level seminar seeking to explore the interface between ecology and physiology. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-level undergraduates and above - R. E. Lee Jr., Miami UniversityFor those who wish to take their entomological studies that bit further, this is a book well worth reading. Though the subject covered is complex, to say the least, the presentation of this work makes it relatively easy reading. * The Entomologist's Record *... this work does present a great deal of original data and is likely to become required reading for anyone studying entomology the level of first degree upwards. * The Entomologist's Record *Table of Contents1. Introduction ; 2. Nutritional physiology and ecology ; 3. Metabolism and gas exchange ; 4. Water balance physiology ; 5. Lethal temperature limits ; 6. Thermoregulation ; 7. Conclusion

Oxford University Press EVOLUTIONARY BIOMECHANICS OSEE P
Book SynopsisEvolutionary biomechanics is the study of evolution through the analysis of biomechanical systems. Its unique advantage is the precision with which physical constraints and performance can be predicted from first principles. Instead of reviewing the entire breadth of the biomechanical literature, a few key examples are explored in depth as vehicles for discussing fundamental concepts, analytical techniques, and evolutionary theory. Each chapter develops a conceptual theme, developing the underlying theory and techniques required for analyses in evolutionary biomechanics. Examples from terrestrial biomechanics, metabolic scaling, and bird flight are used to analyse how physics constrains the design space that natural selection is free to explore, and how adaptive evolution finds solutions to the trade-offs between multiple complex conflicting performance objectives.Evolutionary Biomechanics is suitable for graduate level students and professional researchers in the fields of biomechanicTrade ReviewThis is a scholarly volume that approaches a challenging subject in a straightforward and rigorous manner, which is illuminating without being overpowering...ideal for students who want both depth and a fascinating context. * Ian Carter, The Biologist *This volume provides for all. ... This is a great volume for undergraduates or postdoctoral researchers. * Christian Laurent, Quarterly Review of Biology *Table of Contents1. Themes ; 2. Selection ; 3. Constraint ; 4. Scaling ; 5. Phylogeny ; 6. Form and function in flight ; 7. Adaptation in avian wing design ; 8. Trade-offs: selection, phylogeny and constraint

Oxford University Press Avian Flight
Book SynopsisBird flight has always intrigued mankind. This book provides an up to date account of our existing knowledge on the subject, as well as offering new insights and challenging some established views. A brief history of the science of flight introduces the basic physical principles governing aerial locomotion. A treatment of flight-related functional morphology concentrates on the difference in shape of the arm and hand part of the wings, on the structure and function of tails, and on the shape of the body. The anatomy and mechanical properties of feathers receive special attention. Aerodynamic principles used by birds are explained in theory by simply applying Newton''s laws, and in practice by showing the direction and velocity of the attached flow around an arm wing cross section and of the leading edge vortex flow above a hand wing. The Archaeopteryx fossils remain crucial in our understanding of the evolution of bird flight despite the recent discovery of a range of well-preserved anTrade Review...this is an expertly written introduction into all aspects of bird flight. What makes it even better is that Videler's narrative emphasis is not so much on the mechanical minutiae of avian flight, but rather on explaining and describing what makes it all work...His writing style, moreover, is enthusiastic and colourful. * PalArch's Journal of Vetebrate Palaeontology, 2007 *The strength of the book is its comprehensive coverage of the field...Videler tells us about old work that is still enlightening as well as about the newest and most fashionable research. * Ethology, 2006 *Videler is an enthusiast in every sense of the word, and this is a book for enthsiasts...a key achievement of Videler's book, in reviewing the current state of our knowledge, is to reveal how many lacunae remain. * Ibis *Regardless, the book does a splendid job of conveying the reasons for the author's entusiasm for studying avian flight...the book will serve as an excellent foundation for seminars for advanced undergraduates or graduates and as an essential motivational tool for all avian biologists. * JEB, Bret W. Tobalske, University of Portland *...the book is lucidly written, with clear explanations * British Birds, Vol 99 *Table of ContentsPreface ; 1. Acquisition of knowledge ; 2. The flight apparatus ; 3. Feathers for flight ; 4. Aerodynamics ; 5. Evolution of bird flight ; 6. Bird flight modes ; 7. The bird flight engine ; 8. Energy required for flight ; 9. Taylor & Francis Ltd The Physiology of Fishes
Book SynopsisAlmost three decades after the publication of the first edition, this book remains the only published single-volume work on fish physiology. The fifth edition is an important reference for new students of fish biology, marine and freshwater biologists, ichthyologists, and comparative physiologists.Trade ReviewBuilding on the success of its four predecessor volumes, the fifth edition of The Physiology of Fishes presents an outstanding collection of seventeen reviews of how fishes "work" (to use the felicitous term favored by Knut Schmidt-Nielson). This new edition of the long-running series, which originated in 1993, again provides a one-volume assemblage of what we should know about the biology of fishes, the most speciose group of vertebrates (34,000 species identified so far). Drs. Currie and Evans have done a masterful job of selecting topics, include both familiar, long-standing ones like respiration, temperature, and iono-regulation, and newer ones like epigenetics. The authors selected to pen these reviews are well-chosen and include many younger, rising stars in fish physiology. The format and illustrations of the chapters make them user-friendly and most inviting to read. For "fish people" like myself, there is no better single-volume source of information on our favorite group of organisms. This new edition of the classic series should be on all of our bookshelves!George N. Somero, David and Lucile Packard Emeritus Professor of Marine Science, Hopkins Marine Station, Stanford University, USAPerfect for newcomers to fish biology as well as a reference for experts in the field, this new edition of The Physiology of Fishes is an engaging introduction to a variety of subjects from taxonomy to locomotion. Providing important updates to fish physiology topics such as epigenetics and the microbiome, this book also serves as a concise compilation of the basics of "what it means to be a fish". The 5th edition is sure to be found on the desks and shelves of students and scientists around the world!Carol Bucking, Associate Professor, Department of Biology, York University, Toronto, Canada This book, written by the top of modern comparative fish physiologists, offers an integrative and comprehensive overview of how fish function in the environment in which they live. It covers the past, present and future of our research, from evolution and phylogeny to epigenetics. For undergraduate students it gives a complete overview of the fishes’ systems biology; for the graduate students it gives the necessary details on the latest developments in their field as well as an up-to-date review of literature, and for researchers and professionals from either applied or fundamental fields, it gives the integrative overview they need to interpret and frame their findings. It is an excellent desk reference for when you quickly need to check something, for teaching or research, or to read up on something that is not in the core of your field.
