Rudolf Steiner Press Easter: An Introductory Reader
Book SynopsisRudolf Steiner, the often undervalued, multifaceted genius of modern times, contributed much to the regeneration of culture. In addition to his philosophical teachings, he provided ideas for the development of many practical activities, including education - both general and special - agriculture, medicine, economics, architecture, science, religion and the arts. Steiner's original contribution to human knowledge was based on his ability to conduct 'spiritual research', the investigation of metaphysical dimensions of existence. With his scientific and philosophical training, he brought a new systematic discipline to the field, allowing for conscious methods and comprehensive results. A natural seer from childhood, he cultivated his spiritual vision to a high degree, enabling him to speak with authority on previously veiled mysteries of life. Samples of Steiner's work are to be found in this introductory reader in which Matthew Barton brings together excerpts from Steiner's many talks and writings on Easter. The volume also features an editorial introduction, afterword, commentary and notes.

Rudolf Steiner Press Festivals of the Year: A Workbook for
Book Synopsis'I invite you to travel with me along the spiral of the yearly festivals, to share what I have discovered there in the 40 years I have been exploring this path. I hope you will find a fuller feeling for your own festivals and a latent creative talent for them within your domestic or working situation. I also hope your festivals become a real link between your own spirit and the spirit that weaves through the year.' - from the Introduction The esoteric path of development described in this book is suitable for anyone, regardless of religious persuasion. It offers ways - through meditative and contemplative work - in which each of us can participate in the yearly festive and seasonal cycle. Festivals of the Year takes as its premise that the Earth is a living being. In earlier ages, she existed through her inherent vitality, but now the Earth needs us to help nourish and sustain her. Basing his work on the research of Rudolf Steiner, the author indicates how we can participate in festivals through our inner, spiritual self. The human 'I' or ego can be enhanced by accessing forces from beyond Nature, which in turn can re-enliven the Earth. Engaging with festivals through meditative effort, we become creators ourselves, transcending the purely commemorative, and entering a living, creative dynamic. The practical exercises in this book enable an experience of this, allowing for a perception of the true power of Christianity.

Authentic Lifestyle Glory in the Church: A Fresh Blueprint for
Book SynopsisHave we replaced the glory of God with our church programs. If so, is there anything we can do to get the glory of God back into our gatherings and individual lives? While we have good music, well-written songs and history to learn from, we can still miss having the presence of God in our meetings the way it was in Bible times. In this challenging and often provocative book, Jarrod Cooper deals with these important questions. Providing plenty of biblical illustrations to support his concerns, Jarrod shakes up more of our conventional thinking on the subject or worship. Can we for example only worship in the presence of the microphone, worship leader and powerpoint. What if all these were stripped away and it was just God and us? What would our worship be like then?

The University of Chicago Press Blessing SameSex Unions
Book SynopsisWhy are so many churches vehemently opposed to blessing same-sex unions? This title shows how carefully selected ideals of Christian marriage have come to dominate recent debates over same-sex unions. It is suitable for both sides of the ongoing American debate over gay marriage.Trade Review"A powerful, at times brilliant, brief for Christian churches blessing same-sex unions. This is not merely a contribution to gay studies; any Christian who wants to think more clearly about marriage should read Mark D. Jordan." (Publishers Weekly) "Documenting his case colorfully from both popular media and scholarly sources, Mark D. Jordan asks: if all that marriage entails is following the etiquette advice from a professional weding planner, what is the point? Jordan digs deep as he examines the historical and theological origins of Christian marriage." (Christian Century)"

The University of Chicago Press Kingship and Sacrifice Ritual and Society in
Book SynopsisValeri presents an overview of Hawaiian religious culture, in which hierarchies of social beings and their actions are mirrored by the cosmological hierarchy of the gods. As the sacrifice is performed, the worshipper is incorporated into the god of his class. Thus he draws on divine power to sustain the social order of which his action is a part, and in which his own place is determined by the degree of his resemblance to his god. The key to Hawaiian societyand a central focus for Valeriis the complex and encompassing sacrificial ritual that is the responsibility of the king, for it displays in concrete actions all the concepts of pre-Western Hawaiian society. By interpreting and understanding this ritual cycle, Valeri contends, we can interpret all of Hawaiian religious culture.
