    1 in stock

Book SynopsisLearning Ritual Magic is a training manual for anyone serious about improving their magic based on the western mystery traditions, including tarot, ritual magic, Qabalah, and astrology. "What you get out of [magic] can be measured precisely by what you are willing to put into it- and time is the essential ingredient in successful magical training," the authors write. And just as no one expects to run a marathon or play a Bach violin concerto without sufficient training, so practitioners of the magical arts shouldn''t expect to work complex, powerful magical rituals without a solid grounding in the techniques of Hermetic high magic. By spending at least a half hour a day practicing the lessons found in Learning Ritual Magic, the solitary apprentice attains the proper groundwork and experience for working ritual magic.Learning Ritual Magic provides lessons on meditation and a set of exercises designed to develop basic skills in imagination, will, memory, and self-knowledge, all of which are absolute fundamentals to magical attainment. While the authors discuss the essentials of magical theory, they focus on daily, basic perspectives rather than launching into details of advanced practice.Designed for the solitary practitioner, Learning Ritual Magic concludes with a ceremony of self-initiation.

Book SynopsisAs dusk fell on a misty evening in 1521, Martin Luther - hiding from his enemies at Wartburg Castle - found himself seemingly tormented by demons hurling walnuts at his bedroom window. In a fit of rage, the great reformer threw at the Devil the inkwell from which he was preparing his colossal translation of the Bible. A belief - like Luther's - in the supernatural, and in black magic, has been central to European cultural life for 3000 years. From the Salem witch trials to the macabre novels of Dennis Wheatley; from the sadistic persecution of eccentric village women to the seductive sorceresses of TV's Charmed; and from Derek Jarman's punk film Jubilee to Ken Russell's The Devils, John Callow brings the twilight world of the witch, mage and necromancer to vivid and fascinating life. He takes us into a shadowy landscape where, in an age before modern drugs, the onset of sudden illness was readily explained by malevolent spellcasting. And where dark, winding country lanes could terrify by night, as the hoot of an owl or shriek of a fox became the desolate cries of unseen spirits.Witchcraft has profoundly shaped the western imagination, and endures in the forms of modern-day Wicca and paganism. Embracing the Darkness is an enthralling account of this fascinating aspect of the western cultural experience.Trade ReviewIts eccentric breadth and listless weirdness will appeal to any curious reader. * Times Literary Supplement *Wide-ranging, well-researched and highly persuasive. * Revenant *Table of ContentsIntroduction The Figure of the Witch Out of the Shadows From Delusion to Demonic Pact Patterns of Belief 1: The Hedge-witch, the Healer and the Cunning Man Patterns of Belief 2: The Alchemist, the Necromancer and the Mage The Witch Hunters Women and Witchcraft The Nightmare Given Form ‘A Thing Grown Most Common’: Crisis and Conformity The Decline of Belief? Book SynopsisAfterlives of Endor offers an analysis of the way early modern English literature addressed the period''s anxieties about witchcraft and theatricality. What determined whether or not a demonologist imagined a trial as a spectacle? What underlying epistemological constraints governed such choices and what conceptions of witchcraft did these choices reveal? Pairing readings of demonological texts with canonical plays and poetry, Laura Levine examines such questions. Through analyses of manuals and pamphlets about the prosecution of witchesincluding Reginald Scot''s skeptical The Discoverie of Witchcraft (1584), King James VI/I''s Daemonologie (1597), and Jean Bodin''s De la Demonomanie des Sorciers (1580)Afterlives of Endor examines the way literary texts such as Shakespeare''s The Winter''s Tale and The Tempest, Spenser''s The Faerie Queene, and Marlowe''s Tragicall History of Doctor Faustus address anxietie

Book SynopsisPoison Pen Letters to Myself chronicles a very personal journey through the years overcoming severe bouts of depression and consequently creating a more holistic and spiritual lifestyle. The chapters Red Letters, Return to Sender and Addressee Unknown reveal periods of depression and anxiety; anger and healing; and acceptance and spiritual growth. The words in these pages were not written for mass consumption. They were not artfully crafted for reading aloud in dim rooms to a soundtrack of clicking fingers and Parisian style applause. They were not intended as political statements or a way of reaching other wayward wandering souls. Over the last two decades they were poured, purged, scribbled and spat onto scraps of paper, napkins, backs of hands, into empty pages and blank spaces of other books. At times of sorrow, frustration, confusion, acceptance and joy these words made sense of the minds muddled meanderings. Within these pages you will find heart-breaking, heart-healing honesty that crosses the divide and touches the souls of others.Trade ReviewRomany is a compassionate, spiritual author, whose wisdom extends far, far beyond her years and touches the heart of all who have shed tears for the sorrows life brings, and laughed in hope of that better tomorrow or maybe the day after. • Wicca: History, Belief & Community in Modern

Liverpool University Press Wicca: History, Belief & Community in Modern

Book SynopsisThe past century has born witness to a growing interest in the belief systems of ancient Europe, with an array of contemporary Pagan groups claiming to revive these old ways for the needs of the modern world. By far the largest and best known of these Paganisms has been Wicca, a new religious movement that can now count hundreds of thousands of adherents worldwide. Emerging from the occult milieu of mid twentieth-century Britain, Wicca was first presented as the survival of an ancient pre-Christian Witch-Cult, whose participants assembled in covens to venerate their Horned God and Mother Goddess, to celebrate seasonal festivities, and to cast spells by the light of the full moon. Spreading to North America, where it diversified under the impact of environmentalism, feminism, and the 1960s counter-culture, Wicca came to be presented as a Goddess-centred nature religion, in which form it was popularised by a number of best-selling authors and fictional television shows. Today, Wicca is a maturing religious movement replete with its own distinct world-view, unique culture, and internal divisions. This book represents the first published academic introduction to be exclusively devoted to this fascinating faith, exploring how this Witches' Craft developed, what its participants believe and practice, and what the Wiccan community actually looks like. In doing so it sweeps away widely-held misconceptions and offers a comprehensive overview of this religion in all of its varied forms. Drawing upon the work of historians, anthropologists, sociologists, and scholars of religious studies, as well as the writings of Wiccans themselves, it provides an original synthesis that will be invaluable for anyone seeking to learn about the blossoming religion of modern Pagan Witchcraft.Trade Review"Ethan Doyle White's book combines a sweeping trans-Atlantic survey of contemporary Pagan Witchcraft's origins and spread. With ample attention to both theology and praxis, he has produced an important resource for future scholars of the first world religion that began in England." - Chas S. Book SynopsisPaganism is one of the world's fastest growing religions because mainstream religion fails to respond to many people's needs. Wicca, or Wisecraft, is a major tradition. Its earth-centered spirituality and connection to the forces of the Universe harmonize with humankind's most ancient heritage and origins. Wiccan ritual reconnects us to our ancestral roots when the divine resided in all, and all was sacred. Coupled with serious concerns about our environment, people are finding meaning in Wicca's nature-focused spirituality that is both environmentally interactive and spiritually integrated. Wiccan Celebrations is a complete illustrated guide to Wiccan ethics and practice based on the seasonal cycles; the Sabbats, the lunar phases; the Esbats, analogous to the life of the God and Goddess in their quest for insight and growth. • Advances in Contemplative Social Research

Uniwersytet Jagiellonski, Wydawnictwo Advances in Contemplative Social Research

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe book is about a new paradigm in social sciences, contemplative inquiry. It concerns theory, methods of research, and practical applications. Deep contemplation of a situation could be an epistemological choice for social scientists. It is a fundamentally different approach to research, whereby the investigator is researching not only the object, but also the situation of research and herself/himself in it. Contemplating is a dual way of approaching the truth. It does not mean that the researcher is mentally divided; on the contrary she/he wants to be complete and achieve the unity of being as a researcher-human being and as an element of the situation (psychosocial and historical). Contemplating enables researchers to see how the mind works and create images and reports from the field: What is available for the mind and what is silent or repressed because of the dominating rhetoric of description and rhetoric of feeling? Contemplation is not only analysis, it is also an ethical choice of stopping here and now to see the situation clearly and reporting it together with all th reservations that could result from the mindfully observed interaction of mind, self, and situation at one historical moment.Trade ReviewThis book is unique and audacious, and fits very well with current tendencies within qualitative research. It introduces new, fresh threads to questions and concerns that are highly significant for contemporary social science. The formulated conclusions go beyond directly methodological issues, posing key philosophical questions to the whole project of western sociology. The critical potential of the adopted perspective would allow the author to throw the question of reflexive scientific examination in social sciences into doubt to the extent comparable with that of the deconstruction of sociology once performed by Baudrillard. The author does not choose to fulfill this potential. Rather, he pursues the reconciliation of the nondualistic contemplative approach with the discursiveness of western science. He also strongly emphasizes the consistency between the ethical and the cognitive, which is characteristic of the Zen perspective; in our academic reality these two components have been separated and any attempts at their reconciliation result in numerous and rather unmovable difficulties with regard to logic. All this makes the book in question deeply inspiring on various levels of the organization of social science within the contemporary institutional and cultural state of affairs. Without a doubt, this book is worth publishing as it contributes new quality to academic reflection on the social world and the ways of cognising it. -- Grażyna Romańczuk-Woroniecka, University of Warsaw
