Oxford University Press The Battle for Control of the Brass and
Book SynopsisThe Battle for Control of the Brass and Instruments Business in the French Industrial Revolution narrates and analyzes the largest judicial battle in culture and industrial property in nineteenth century Europe, the echoes of which still ring today. The battle was about simple wind instruments made of brass and their related patents, not by opera - the musical genre that moved the most money and people at the time - or the revered and contentious high art. Music, in all its dimensions, had become a business. The nineteenth-century French industry of brasswinds shows how the strategic parameters of the Industrial Revolution and, essentially, the system that sustained them (capitalism), permeated everything. What lay behind those contentious disputes was the pursuit of commercial profit, and the consolidation of a dominant position that would yield the maximum possible economic return. The legal confrontation began when a group of French businessmen who built wind instruments saw their business and sources of financing threatened after being forced by the Army to use a series of musical instruments that were different to the usual ones and protected by patents for invention that belonged to Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone. Diago Ortega provides evidence of how political power was used by economic power, and presents arguments on how culture articulated the social machinery and was a powerful tool for legitimizing political positions.

He was jazz''s first hipster. He performed in sunglasses and coined and popularized phrases like that''s cool and you dig? He always wore a suit and his trademark porkpie hat. He influenced everyone from B. B. King to Stan Getz to Allen Ginsberg, creating a lyrical style of playing that forever changed the sound of the tenor saxophone. In this groundbreaking biography of Lester Young (1909-1959), historian Douglas Daniels brings to life the man and his world, and corrects a number of misconceptions. Even though others have identified Young as a Kansas City musician, Daniels traces his roots to the blues of Louisiana and his early years traveling with his father''s band and the legendary Oklahoma City Blue Devils. Later we see the jazz culture of New York in the early 1940s, when Young was launched to national and international fame with the Count Basie Orchestra and began to accompany his close friend Billie Holiday. After a year spent in an Army prison on a conviction for marij

Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music Time Pieces for Descant/Soprano Recorder, Volume
Book SynopsisTime Pieces for Descant/Soprano Recorder is a two-volume anthology of well-crafted arrangements of music from the 14th century to the present day. The pieces are presented chronologically within each volume and all include the year in which they were written, so that you can get a feel for the different styles of music through time. Both volumes feature contrasting styles, from Susato to Chopin and from Mozart to Prokofiev and are an invaluable source of further study and recital repertoire for Grades 1-5.Trade ReviewThese books become especially valuable as they contain music representing Classical, Romantic and Modern periods - styles that are often not included in the education of younger recorder students. * American Recorder *All four of these volumes include wonderful selections, representative of many historical eras and of many different genres within each era. * American Recorder *Considered as a whole, this series really hit home with me, since music students on any instrument at any level of instruction should be developing a knowledge of stylistic distinctions of the various musical eras. The arrangements by Bowman and Bullard are top-notch; the piano accompaniments are interesting and true to the spirit and the harmonic structure of the original compositions. * American Recorder *Table of ContentsSaltarello [Anon.] ; Canzon: prima parte [Brade] ; Vivace and Allegro from Concerto grosso Op. 6 No. 8 [Corelli] ; Allegro from Eine kleine Nachtmusik, K. 525 [Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart] ; Allegretto from Sonata in G, Op. 99 No. 2 [James Hook] ; Byrne's Hornpipe [Anon.] ; Mazurka Op. 30 No. 1 [Frederik Chopin] ; Zu Hause, Op. 134 No. 6 [Lichner] ; The Little Shepherd from Children's Corner [Claude Debussy] ; Scherzo from 30 Pieces for Children, Op. 27 [Dmitri Kabalevsky] ; March from Three Youthful Pieces [Lutoslawski] ; Morning Piper from Suite of Six Pipers [Thompson] ; Waltz for Anna [Kathryn Anne Bennetts] ; Dance of the Raindrops [Kathryn Anne Bennetts]

The history of the instrument is followed by illuminating chapters on baroque, classical, romantic and twentieth century music. The mark of Goossens’ long experience as an international soloist is woven into every page, whether in his observations about great soloists of the past or in pertinent views on modern recording methods. Edwin Roxburgh contributes a detailed explanation of extemporization and ornamentation in eighteenth-century music as well as an optimistic review of new developments in oboe playing and modern music.
