Book SynopsisHuman-wildlife conflict is an urgent challenge for conservation. Framing human-wildlife interactions strictly as conflict, however, limits the array of solutions. With a broader perspective that emphasises tolerance and coexistence, this book presents solutions to turn conflict into coexistence.Trade Review'This is an open-minded book that seeks to examine the many facets of each case study …' Amanda Hardy, The Biologist'It will be of great interest to life and conservation scientists because it offers a humanistic point of view that is fundamental to conservationists, but which is seldomly effectively addressed. It should also interest academics of the human sciences who are addressing other kinds of conflicts, such as political or religious polarizations … An urgent step in search for the balance necessary for human-wildlife coexistence can be found in this book.' Reaktion Books Sheep

Book SynopsisThe Egyptians worshipped them, the Romans dressed them in fitted coats, the Christians made the shepherd synonymous with their divine saviour. In Sheep, Philip Armstrong traces the natural and cultural history of both the wild and domestic species of Ovis: from the Old World mouflon to the corkscrew-horned flocks of the Egyptians, to the 'Trojan sheep' of Homer's Odyssey, to the vast migratory mobs of Spanish merinos - all the way to Dolly the cloned ewe and the sheep-human hybrids of Haruki Murakami. Above all else, Sheep demonstrates that sometimes the most mundane animals turn out to be the most surprising.

Book Synopsis'A vital, thorough and accessible history that everyone who cares about the past or the future should read.' Rosamund Young, Sunday Times bestselling author of The Secret Life of Cows______________________________________The story of the relationship between humankind and cattle, from the Sunday Times bestselling author of Counting Sheep. To tell the story of the relationship between humankind and cattle is to tell the story of civilisation itself. Since the beginning, cattle have tilled our soils, borne our burdens, fed and clothed us and been our loyal and uncomplaining servants in the work of taming the wilderness and wresting a living from the land. There has never been a time when we have not depended on cattle. As human societies have migrated from the country to the city, the things they have needed from their cattle may have changed, but the fundamental human dependence remains.Blending personal experience, recollection, interviews with farmers, butchers and cattle breeders and studding the narrative with little-known nuggets of technical detail, Philip Walling entertainingly reveals the central importance of cattle to all our lives.Trade ReviewA well-researched, uncynical and thought-provoking book. Rocky Mountain Books The Grizzly Manifesto: In Defence of the Great

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe grizzly bear, once the archetype for all that is wild, is quickly becoming a symbol of nature''s fierce but flagging resilience in the face of human greed and ignorance--and the difficulty a wealth-addicted society has in changing its ways. North America''s grizzlies have been under siege ever since Europeans arrived. They''d survived the arrival of spear-wielding humans 13,000 years ago, outlived the short-faced bear, the dire wolf and the sabre-tooth cat--not to mention mastodons, mammoths and giant ground sloths the size of elephants--but grizzly bears in much of Turtle Island succumbed to 375 years of unrelenting commercialization and industrialization, disappearing from the Great Plains and much of the mountain West. Despite their relatively successful recovery in Yellowstone National Park, the bears'' decline continues largely unchecked. And the front line in this centuries-old battle for survival has shifted to western Alberta and southern BC, where outdated mythologies, rapacious industry and disingenuous governments continue to push the Great Bear into the mountains and toward a future that may not have room for them at all.

  • The Mammals of Virginia

McDonald & Woodward Publishing Company, US The Mammals of Virginia

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe First Edition of The Mammals of Virginia (1998) was the first book on the subject and scope of Virginias mammals to have appeared in more than fifty years and, as such, was a major contribution to the literature on Virginia mammals. Twenty-three years later, the Second Edition presents the very latest and updated research on the subject. An Introduction discusses the general characteristics of mammals and their classification. This is followed by a detailed history of mammal investigations in Virginia beginning in 1585 and a discussion of Virginias five physiographic provinces. Individual species accounts have been prepared for each of the 122 species of mammals currently or previously inhabiting the state. Accounts of several new species that were not found in Virginia in 1998 are included. Each account includes a description of the animal, its distribution (including updated national and statewide range maps), habitat, habits, food, reproduction and development, longevity, pelage variations, parasites and diseases, predation, geographic variation, and the location of all known specimens in museum, college, university, or private collections. Some topics specific to one or more species such as white-nose syndrome, hibernation, rabies, and introductions (both successful and unsuccessful) are discussed where appropriate. Each species account includes a colour photograph and an artists rendering of the skull (dorsal, ventral and lateral views). Diagnostic keys are provided to Orders, Families, Genera and species. A new chapter entitled What May the Future Hold for Virginias Mammals? discusses natural and human-induced changes including urbanisation, climate change, effects of non-native mammals and plants, habitat restoration, wind turbines, pesticides, mining, transmission lines and pipelines. Appendices include a Checklist of Mammals of Virginia, Mammals Whose Type Localities Are In Virginia, Federal and State Endangered and Threatened Mammals, a Glossary, and Credits for Colour Plates. The book concludes with a Bibliography of over 4,400 references, including over 3,600 references to Virginia mammals, the most extensive compilation of bibliographic references ever assembled for Virginia mammals. The Second Edition of The Mammals of Virginia is a valuable resource for everyone -- researchers, students, professors, librarians, federal and state biologists, naturalists, and others -- with an interest in the mammals of Virginia and surrounding states.

Book SynopsisIn Part of the Pride, Kevin Richardson, recently dubbed The Lion Man on 60 Minutes, tells the story of how he grew from a young boy who loved animals to become a man able to cross the divide between humans and predators, looking some of the world''s most dangerous animals directly in the eye, playing with them and even kissing them on the nose-all without ever being attacked or injured. As a self-taught animal behaviorist, Richardson has broken every safety rule known to humans when working with these wild animals. Flouting common misconceptions that breaking an animal''s spirit with sticks and chains is the best way to subdue them, he uses love, understanding and trust to develop personal bonds with them. His unique method of getting to know their individual personalities, what makes each of them angry, happy, upset, or irritated has caused them to accept him like one of their own into their fold. Richardson allows the animals'' own stories to share center stage as he tells rea

Book SynopsisWith a new introduction on Werner Herzog’s film entitled The Grizzly ManTimothy Treadwell, self-styled “bear whisperer” dared to live among the grizzlies, seeking to overturn the perception of them as dangerously aggressive animals. When he and his girlfriend were mauled, it created a media sensation. In The Grizzly Maze, Nick Jans, a seasoned outdoor writer with a quarter century of experience writing about Alaska and bears, traces Treadwell’s rise from unknown waiter in California to celebrity, providing a moving portrait of the man whose controversial ideas and behavior earned him the scorn of hunters, the adoration of animal lovers and the skepticism of naturalists. “Intensely imagistic, artfully controlled prose . . . behind the building tension of Treadwell’s path to oblivion, a stunning landscape looms.”—Newsday
