McDonald & Woodward Publishing Company, US The Mammals of Virginia
Book SynopsisThe First Edition of The Mammals of Virginia (1998) was the first book on the subject and scope of Virginias mammals to have appeared in more than fifty years and, as such, was a major contribution to the literature on Virginia mammals. Twenty-three years later, the Second Edition presents the very latest and updated research on the subject. An Introduction discusses the general characteristics of mammals and their classification. This is followed by a detailed history of mammal investigations in Virginia beginning in 1585 and a discussion of Virginias five physiographic provinces. Individual species accounts have been prepared for each of the 122 species of mammals currently or previously inhabiting the state. Accounts of several new species that were not found in Virginia in 1998 are included. Each account includes a description of the animal, its distribution (including updated national and statewide range maps), habitat, habits, food, reproduction and development, longevity, pelage variations, parasites and diseases, predation, geographic variation, and the location of all known specimens in museum, college, university, or private collections. Some topics specific to one or more species such as white-nose syndrome, hibernation, rabies, and introductions (both successful and unsuccessful) are discussed where appropriate. Each species account includes a colour photograph and an artists rendering of the skull (dorsal, ventral and lateral views). Diagnostic keys are provided to Orders, Families, Genera and species. A new chapter entitled What May the Future Hold for Virginias Mammals? discusses natural and human-induced changes including urbanisation, climate change, effects of non-native mammals and plants, habitat restoration, wind turbines, pesticides, mining, transmission lines and pipelines. Appendices include a Checklist of Mammals of Virginia, Mammals Whose Type Localities Are In Virginia, Federal and State Endangered and Threatened Mammals, a Glossary, and Credits for Colour Plates. The book concludes with a Bibliography of over 4,400 references, including over 3,600 references to Virginia mammals, the most extensive compilation of bibliographic references ever assembled for Virginia mammals. The Second Edition of The Mammals of Virginia is a valuable resource for everyone -- researchers, students, professors, librarians, federal and state biologists, naturalists, and others -- with an interest in the mammals of Virginia and surrounding states.

University of Nevada Press Population Ecology of Roosevelt Elk: Conservation
Book SynopsisThe Roosevelt elk populate the parks along California’s north coast and comprise the largest land mammals in the parks, some weighing up to 1,200 pounds. They are a stable terrestrial land mammal population, a fixture in the parks, but still require ongoing stewardship and management. In a study spanning more than twenty years, Weckerly made key observations and conducted various investigations under a multitude of ecological conditions. Few authors have dedicated this much time and effort into a single research area. It is a testament to perseverance that his groundbreaking study of the Roosevelt elk was so successful. He was able to document the independent dynamics of several herds of female elk, experience the extinction of one of their subpopulations, and record scientific conclusions in the context of resiliency and redundancy of the elk population. This book will be of considerable interest to those who investigate the ecology of big game animals, including naturalists, hunters, and individuals with particular interest in Redwood State and National Parks. It is an important book that contributes substantially to the persistence and viability of Roosevelt elk in the parks and the surrounding area.Trade ReviewThe book is well written, interesting, and should be of interest to a wide array of people. Most scientific aspects of the book are spot on. I think this is a book that should be of value to a broad audience, including visitors to the parks, and not just scientists."" - Terry Bowyer, Idaho State University

Apollo Publishers It's Not My Fault: A Pangolin's Manifesto
Book SynopsisA charming illustrated introduction to the pangolin—the shy, scaly-skinned creature scapegoated for the coronavirus outbreak. Pangolin. You've seen the name on the news ticker. You've read the headlines. You've typed it into your search bar. Maybe you know how for centuries, poachers and traffickers have targeted these enigmatic mammals, selling their trademark scales for use in traditional medicine and folk remedies. And that today, pangolins bear an unwieldy burden as the long-snouted face of the COVID-19 virus, as they have been identified as a possible link in the spread of the disease. But what is a pangolin? A mythical creature? A dinosaur? How could it have started all of this? And what can a pangolin teach us about surviving sickness, attacks, and isolation? With heartwarming images and witty revelations, this book will set the record straight: teaching you about these elusive introverts, the dangers they may or may not present to humans, and the threats that they face as an endangered species. This illustrated manifesto will clear up the tabloid misconceptions and reveal time-tested pangolin beliefs, including: Looks can be deceiving (pangolins are more closely related to cats and dogs than lookalike reptiles like armadillos). It's okay to be a loner—especially in a global pandemic. Your worth is not skin-deep. You deserve protection, even if you're different. Curling up into a ball is always the best defense. Through the delightful drawings and clever captions that fill the pages of It's Not My Fault: A Pangolin’s Manifesto, animal lovers of all ages will laugh, cry, and learn that even the most misunderstood members of the animal kingdom are worthy of a second look.

Skyhorse Publishing Searching for the Snow Leopard: Guardian of the
Book SynopsisA stunning visual and personal journey in search of the iconic big cat, the snow leopard. The snow leopard, known as the ghost of the mountains, is an elusive predator that has captured the human imagination for eons. Yet, by nature secretive, living at altitudes of up to 19,000 feet in one of the world's harshest environments, it is notoriously difficult to see. Those lucky enough to encounter one speak of the experience as momentous, transformative, even spiritual. In this handsomely illustrated, eloquent book, published in partnership with the Snow Leopard Conservancy, world-renowned wildlife photographers, naturalists, and conservationists take the reader closer than most humans will ever get to knowing snow leopards and understanding why these beautiful big cats have for so long been considered the most mysterious of all. More than 130 breathtaking photographs — all taken in the wild, and none with camera traps — accompany personal narratives and anecdotes that convey the experience of learning to see; the patient pursuit, following the tracks and other sign for a momentary glimpse; an unexpected encounter; watching the predator hunt; a magical moment with a mother and her cubs. A special "seek and find" section challenges readers to spot the snow leopard--to discern camouflage from rock and snow. The text also relates the natural history of the snow leopard, its cultural significance and place in lore, its interactions with local peoples, and information about its conservation. Royalties from the sales of Searching for the Snow Leopard support the Snow Leopard Conservancy and its programs.

The American University in Cairo Press A Field Guide to the Mammals of Egypt
Book SynopsisA Field Guide to the Mammals of Egypt is the first comprehensive field guide to every mammal species recorded in contemporary Egypt, from gazelle to gerbil, from hyena to hyrax. Each mammal species is described in detail, with reference to identification features, status, habitat, and habits, and with comparisons to similar species. A map is also provided for each species, clearly showing its current, and in some cases historical, range. Every species is meticulously illustrated—the bats and sea mammals in detailed black-and-white illustrations, all other species in scientifically accurate color plates. Additional vignettes emphasize aspects of mammal behavior, cover the minutiae of such features as the nose-leafs and ear structure of the various bat species, and illustrate the tracks and trails of the more commonly encountered mammals. This is an indispensable reference work for anyone interested in the wildlife of Egypt, from professional biologists to desert travelers and interested amateurs. Furthermore, as it describes and illustrates every whale and dolphin species recorded in Egyptian waters, including the Red Sea, it will be of special significance to anyone diving in the region. The book is compact, easy to slip into a daypack, and well up to the rigors of desert travel.
