Apple Academic Press Inc. Water Treatment in Developed and Developing
Book SynopsisUN studies show that high-income, developed nations treat about 70 percent of their wastewater. However, in low-income developing nations, only 8 percent of wastewater undergoes any kind of treatment. Inadequate water treatment has serious consequences for both human health and the environment. The articles in this compendium provide a representative cross sample of both developing and developed nations' water treatment facilities. Included are the following topics: Reclaimed water for irrigation reuse in developing countries Sludge-handling practices in Micronesia The removal of phthalate esters from Chinese water sources Disposal of domestic wastewater in Nigeria Ameba-enrichment in a South African water treatment plant Bioenergy from wastewater produced by a Brazilian meat-processing plant The presence of various pharmaceutical contaminants in the River Thames Wastewater recycling in Greece The impact on surface water from contaminants released from German water treatment plants A Canadian constructed wetland's effectiveness for the removal of various contaminants from wastewater Accessing irrigation from treated wastewater in the United States The spacial distribution of fecal indicator bacteria in the groundwater beneath two American water treatment plants Detection of contamination from retinoid acid reception agonists in Japanese water treatment plants The editor, a respected international expert in the field, has selected investigations that offer essential information for ongoing research at the graduate and professional levels, as well as for environmental engineers and others responsible for choosing the most efficient water treatment technologies.Table of ContentsIntroduction. Practical Action Publishing Rural Community Water Supply: Sustainable
Book SynopsisThe first Water Decade aimed to serve everyone with safe drinking water by 1990. More than three decades later, the task is far from finished; it is now abundantly clear that it will take more time - in some countries much more time - than the 15 years of the Sustainable Development Goals. Despite the United Nations declaration that no-one would be left behind, without step-changes in commitment, know-how, and resources, many rural households will still be struggling for their daily water supply in 2030 and beyond. In this book, Richard Carter weaves together the myriad of factors that need to come together to make rural water supply truly available to everyone. Sustainable water supply for all requires sound stewardship of water resources, good quality physical infrastructure, and management and financing arrangements that are equally fit-for-purpose. In many countries, systemic change is needed. Ultimately, radical changes to the global web of injustice that divides this world into rich and poor may be the only way to address the underlying problems.

Rare Bird Books Thirsty: William Mulholland, California Water,
Book SynopsisThirsty is the history of Los Angeles and its fraught relationship with water. As a city on the make since the early twentieth century, Los Angeles' resources fought hard to keep up with its unchecked growth. The city's water chief William Mulholland built an aqueduct to grab water over 200 miles away in Owens Valley, but it wasn't enough. Thirsty is the gripping tale of Los Angeles' epic battles for water, the larger-than-life characters that shaped a city's destiny, and the man-made tragedy that killed 400 and forever changed the way water would be harnessed and allocated.Trade ReviewFinalist for the Southern California Independent Booksellers Association Award"Marc Weingarten’s new book, Thirsty: William Mulholland, California Water, and the Real Chinatown, neatly encapsulates the complex background of civic battles (the so-called “water wars”) between L.A. and the Owens Valley that led up to that moment and which helped to create the sprawling megalopolis we live in now."—LA Weekly"...for media cognoscenti, the portions about [Harrison Gray] Otis, his soon-to-be-competitor Boyce and an enterprising delivery man named Harry Chandler will provide added enjoyment."—Adweek

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Corporations as Custodians of the Public Good?: Exploring the Intersection of Corporate Water Stewardship and Global Water Governance
Book SynopsisThis book provides a comprehensive assessment of how local corporate water strategies influence global water governance objectives. In various geographies, companies spearhead a quest for more sustainable water management within and beyond their own operations. This book critically examines such strategies and provides an overarching analysis of the effects that mounting corporate involvement has had on the global water discourse. More specifically, it explains why companies from the food, beverage, textile, and mining sectors have started to incorporate water management objectives into their business strategies, how companies work in partnerships with other stakeholders to realize these objectives, and how these actions acquire wider political legitimacy. It presents insightful interview material from business leaders and other high-level stakeholders. Readers will gain the necessary knowledge to develop a critical view and respond appropriately.Table of ContentsChapter 1. United Nations Ensuring safe water and sanitation for all: a
Book SynopsisThis study examines the role and potential of science, technology, and innovation (STI) as key enablers for catalytic change in the world's achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6) on clean water and sanitation for all. It highlights the deep-rooted relationship between the two and analyses how STI can contribute significantly to overcoming the persistent challenges in delivering SDG 6, with a focus on the distribution and delivery of safe water and sanitation, the integrated water resource management, and addressing inequalities in the sector, notably in relation to gender. The study also highlights the potential of frontier technologies. Countries are recommended to consider STI as part of an answer that requires careful context-specific policies to bring it to fruition. They include embracing decentralised solutions and considering nexus that water shares with other sectors. The report also suggests how the international community can go a long way to assist countries in achieving SDG 6, notably by pooling its knowledge and technological know-how through sharing mechanisms and by developing innovative financial mechanisms to support water and sanitation projects in developing countries
