Brill Exercise of Arms: Warfare in the Netherlands,
Book SynopsisThe great European conflict known as the Thirty Years War was only the final phase of a war in the Netherlands which was to last 80 years. In the course of this the Dutch rose up successfully against their Spanish rulers and established a Republic in the early 16th century which was the envy of its contemporaries. This volume brings together papers by 11 leading military historians from the Netherlands who discuss the processes by which the Dutch organised and financed the military apparatus which was eventually to defeat the leading land and maritime power of their day, and to maintain the position of Holland as a world power until well into the 18th century. Articles cover military matters such as changes in strategy and tactics and issues such as the financing of the war, effort, the navy, privateering and the arms trade.Table of Contents'Foreword' - Geoffrey Parker 'Introduction' - M. van der Hoeven 'Experience and Experiment: some reflections upon the military developments in 16th- and 17th-century Western Europe' - J.A. de Moor 'The Eighty Years War' - H.L. Brill Fighting for Identity: Scottish Military
Book SynopsisThis volume examines the impact of military activity upon Scotland's national identity as the country underwent a fundamental transition through domestic centralisation at the turn of the seventeenth century, integration into the United Kingdom in 1707, and as a partner in Britain's global empire during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is divided into three thematic sections that examine the evolution of Scottish military identity over the early modern period, how the Highland region moved from a relationship of hostility to the Lowland political authorities to the central element in eighteenth and ninteenth century Scottish soldiering, and, finally, how aspects of Scotland's civilian society interrelated with her soldiers.Trade Review"...a useful and valuable collection of essays..." – John Childs, in: Scottish Economic & Social History, 2002 "…a step formward in the methodology of writing military history…"

By some historians the Buffalo is regarded as an outright failure, but this is a rating this stubby little fighter did not deserve. This book presents an overview of the development and operational use of the Buffalo with many photos including a number not published before.

Amsterdam University Press Fighting for a Living: A Comparative Study of
Book SynopsisFighting for a Living investigates the circumstances that have produced starkly different systems of recruiting and employing soldiers in different parts of the globe over the last 500 years. It does so on the basis of a wide range of case studies taken from Europe, Africa, America, the Middle East and Asia. The novelty of "Fighting for a Living" is that it is not military history in the traditional sense (concentrating at wars and battles or on military technology) but that it looks at military service and warfare as forms of labour, and at the soldiers as workers. Military employment offers excellent opportunities for this kind of international comparison. Where many forms of human activity are restricted by the conditions of nature or the stage of development of a given society, organized violence is ubiquitous. Soldiers, in one form or another, are always part of the picture, in any period and in every region. Nevertheless, Fighting for a Living is the first study to undertake a systematic comparative analysis of military labour. It therefore speaks to two distinct, and normally quite separate, communities: that of labour historians and that of military historians.Trade Review"Historians have long overlooked the labour involved in soldiering. But now, with the publication of Fighting for a Living, the world of military workers is brought to the forefront of scholarly inquiry. The editors throw a critical shining light on the nature of war and the nature of work for the millions of individuals who have contributed their labour, and often their lives, for the militaries of the world." Book SynopsisIs India too defensive and tolerant when its core national security is threatened? Has it been a ''soft state'' in responding to terrorist provocations from Pakistan and territorial encroachments from China? Does India lack a strategic culture of raising the costs of aggression by its two principal adversaries? The past record of the Indian state has been questioned on such grounds. But this changed during the prime ministership of Narendra Modi. Guided by a ''security first'' vision and the doctrine of ''offensive defense'', his government sought to alter the strategic calculus of India''s opponents by credibly demonstrating a willingness to use commensurate military force and apply diplomatic and economic pressure. Crunch Time: Narendra Modi''s National Security Crises offers a comprehensive analysis of how ''new India'' conducted itself during episodes of major national security crises. It is a testament to how a strong-willed political leadership with mass social support can transform a country''s strategic culture and deter its foes.

Pentagon Press INDIA Pre and Post-Independence,: Indo-China War
Book SynopsisFrom his student days of ‘Quit India Movement’, Indian Independence, the 1947-48 Jammu & Kashmir Operations, civil service during the turbulent days in the North-East Frontier, diplomatic tumult in Tibet and Afghanistan, and finally, to the mainstream of national bureaucracy including the days of Emergency, Mr KC Johorey has seen it all—the India we see today, he’s seein it shape up and evolve. More remarkably, this soldier-civil servant witnessed the momentous events of the days of the Independence and through to the mid-1980s, with a mind dedicated to nationalism and a heart ruled by sense of self-less, honest and effective service to the society and the nation. This book is an account of Mr Johorey’s extraordinary journey of service life, which inspired his younger fellow Bengal Sapper, General Banerjee, to record it in the form of this book. Staying clear of personal matters, this book is a narrative of public events participated by Mr Johorey spanning the period of the late 1930s to mid-1980s. Practitioners of political science, public administration and history would find this book particularly fascinating when events and episodes unknown so far are revealed in its pages. Even for general readers, the narrative would reveal so much more than meets the eye.

Pentagon Press China's Expanding Military Maritime Footprint in
Book SynopsisSignificance of the great expanse of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) comes from its centrality to global trade and as a conduit of energy supply to the Asiatic powers. In fulfilment of its ‘Chinese Dream’ therefore, China has found added interests over the Indian Ocean and its littoral nations. Accordingly, it has launched a massive programme to establish itself in this Region. The concern, however, comes from the intent, means and methods that China has adopted in registering its strategic domination over the IOR based on military power projection, a policy which it views as a prerequisite to the achievement of global power status. Further, peninsular India’s geographical gifted position in the IOR makes China imagine India as a rival and an obstacle to its hegemonic goals. This monograph is a factual description of the PRC's strategy to displace India from its natural advantages – geographic as well as cultural - in the IOR, and so marginalise it in the neighbourhood. The paper then goes on to offer certain recommendations that would protect Indian as well as the sub-continental interests against China’s irascible over-bearance.

Pentagon Press DAY THAT CHANGED IT ALL
Book SynopsisAn amazing journey of an Infantry Unit, so proud of its heritage, to find itself at the Nadir, helped by circumstances – when its Commanding Officer was lost to an impulsive soldier's bullets; officer, men and weapon were lost in quick succession; Counter Terrorist operations went awfully wrong – there seemed to be no light at the end of the tunnel. Morale of the Unit was at its lowest; others viewed it with circumspection and the question in every mind was, will the unit be able to bounce back?!The Unit held its nerves, helped by resilience of its brave officers, JCOs and men; eager to redeem its 'Name' and 'Izzat'-so dear to a soldier. The Unit fought back to regain its lost glory – but not without paying its cost in sweat and blood! The Day That Changed it All is written in the precise and unassuming language of a soldier. For the military reader, every page is full of lessons, big and small, in the craft of soldiering. It is one of the few works that explain simply and in lucid detail how a leader can drive his command to any extent of performance by training and motivation, how caring and preparation will any day outshine fear of punishment.Though a military book, it is a must-read for ‘civilians’ spanning a wide range of age, profession and experience. It has long been understood, but not often acknowledged, that running a successful army infantry unit is the final word on leadership and management. The art of motivation and activation of human resource is the forte of any successful army, especially so the infantry, since manpower is its particular strength and specialty. Any non-military leader, manager, student or admirer of the art of leadership would do well to read this masterpiece of caring, motivation and application of all that makes heroes out of men and winners out of teams. There are compelling descriptions of dangerous operations, sometimes carried out with surgical precision and sometimes fallen to the undeterminable hand of fate. Definitely, a must-read for all thinking people, military or otherwise.

Pentagon Press Mission Victory India: A Key to Quality Combat
Book SynopsisOver the last 70 years, ever since independence, the Indian Armed Forces have been repeatedly tested by multifarious threats and challenges from our adversaries across the border. The conflicts/wars of 1947/48, 1962, 1965, 1971 & 1999 have been acid tests for the Indian military might, economic strength, united will, resilience and resolve. Have the armed forces and nation learnt any valuable lessons from these wars?Sadly, India has failed to honestly review, identify and overcome many of their military weaknesses and shortcomings which are now deep rooted problems and unresolved issues. Equipping and arming the armed forces is an imperative need that must be met. However, there is a critical and neglected dimension, that of `quality military manpower` and `military combat leadership`, that needs paramount attention. The 21st century brings threats in the form of designer, hybrid, cyber, aerospace and nuclear wars. These are in addition to the conventional wars that are still a reality today. All these, in totality, constitute a multiplicity of threats confronting their collective military might. Enhanced quality `combat military leadership` at all levels would surely help in effectively confronting these challenges.Mission Victory India is Volume 5 of the Victory India Campaign(2010-2018) books. While retaining its leadership enhancement perspective, the campaign is no more restricted to issues of selection and training of military officers but goes way beyond to cover numerous complex issues of military and national importance; with focus solely on strengthening the armed forces and nation.

Pentagon Press Assessment of Chinese Military Modernisation and
Book SynopsisEver since its creation, China has been claiming territories of numerous countries. There have been wars and clashes, and the usual tone of policy statements has remained assertive. After annexing Tibet, Communist China has described China as a palm with Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, Arunachal and Ladakh as the country`s five fingers. It is pertinent to note that some maps have even shown Assam and the Andaman Islands as a part of China. The standard tactics of gradual cartographic invasion seems to have been extended to new areas - tentatively, casually first and then with increasing emphasis until the time comes to usurp the quest.Though Chinese White Papers always project a defensive and peaceful attitude, Beijing`s intentions appear deceptive. China`s official media continues to publicise articles that caution India about China retaining the option of initiating military hostilities. In India, China`s prime target, however, there has been scant research on the modernisation of the Chinese Armed Forces and its impact on Indian security. This book is an effort to fill that gap.

Pentagon Press Third Battalion The Rajputana Rifles `Waffadar
Book SynopsisFor centuries, fame and fortune was to be found in India. In the 16th and 17th centuries, India called out to those in search of riches and adventure. The British were the last European Nation to sail to India to trade. The British Empire in India began with the East India Company, incorporated in 1600 by the Royal Charter of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth I, to trade with India. In two centuries, the East India Company became Master of a vast country, by extortion, doublespeak and outright corruption, backed by violence and superior force composed of Indians. The British had come as adventurers but found the lure of this country too strong not to adopt to some customs and traditions of local population. In military organizations the British initially adopted the system of allowing Kings to rule but appointed British Regents. The history of the 3rd Battalion shifts the centre of gravity of success onto the Indian Officers who being `waffadar` rode the tide to establish the British Empire in India. The British were ruthless in ensuring discipline and fidelity. The book is set in chronological order as events unfolded, but also narrates events and draws some important lessons out of it.The Battalion within a month of raising was put to test at Pritchetgarh. It was actively involved in eliminating the remnants of the Peshwa Army. The Battalion was used to suppress and bring Gujarat and Kutch under control of the British Empire. Maharaja Gaekwad of Baroda was Browbeaten. The Battalion formed part of the Army of the Indus. It primarily secured the Sindh and kept the Amirs of Sindh under control. It was here that battalion marched 40 miles within 24 hours to ensure Sher Mohamed, the `Lion of Manipur` withdrew his force from Tatta. The battalion participated in the Persian Campaign of 1856 in the Battles of Bushire and Khushab. In 185, the Battalion was at Satara and ensured no rebellion takes place. For its loyalty the battalion was designated `Waffadar Paltan`.The battalion saw action in China during the Boxer rebellion and in Aden. It also had the privilege of hosting His Royal Highness Prince of Wales, in 1875. The battalion participated in Mesopotamia and then in North West Persia during World War I. The Battalion participated in the Coronation Hockey Tournament and was runner up. Musketry had always been its core strength. The recruiting base of the battalion kept on changing as the British Empire expanded. From Marathi and Konkanis, the recruitment base expanded to Rajputs, Muslims from Gujarat and Central India. The book extensively covers the structure changes such as double battalion, double companies, linked battalions, mounted infantry, camp followers. There is enough fresh scholarship and exploration of the pain and joy in accomplishment of a mission. Failures have been narrated along with successes. In Army all is not war. The book covers social aspects, life at the outposts and interpersonal relationships as well as reforms.

Pentagon Press China Pakistan Military Nexus: Implications for
Book SynopsisPakistan and China enjoy exemplary friendly ties, which have been expanding and becoming even deeper with time. China’s main geopolitical focus in South Asia is to restrain India as a competitor by using Pakistan as a proxy. China’s growing economic and security relation with Pakistan, and the unholy nexus between the two, remains a major worry for India as the growing Chinese involvement is bound to erode India’s influence in the region. Another area of concern has been the lack of credible Indian deterrence to the hybrid threats that it faces as a result of such collusivity between Pakistan and China. This book is the culmination of a series of discussions held under the aegis of the United Service Institution of India on the subject of Sino-Pak Collusivity and Hybrid Warfare. The book contains details on Concepts and Determinants of Hybrid Warfare, an objective assessment of the China–Pakistan Collusive Threats and their Implication for India, and makes Policy recommendations for India in the Time-Frame up to 2030.

Book SynopsisWhile the IAF provided excellent air support to the Army in the West, it established complete air superiority in the East which facilitated the advance of Indian ground troops and helped in the famous para-drop over Tangail and Meghna heliborne operations. The attack on the Governor's residence served as the last nail in the coffin of the Pak armed forces in the East. General AAK Niazi had no option but to surrender along with 93000 soldiers. This was the biggest such surrender after the second World War. The IAF pilots covered themselves with glory and a number of them won gallantry awards. The nation is proud of them and is celebrating Swarnim Vijay Varsh this year. This book is a humble tribute to the bravery and valour of Air Warriors who participated in this war. It carries first hand experiences of some of them.

The Middle East Process remains defunct as the Israel-Palestine conflict remains at the brink. The region also continues to suffer from the geopolitical, geo-economic, and geo-religious contestations among major powers like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Turkey, Egypt, and Iran. Qatar has emerged as new 'Go To' country.Due to perceived nonchalance and withdrawal of the USA, which was its sole security guarantor, the regional majors have begun to look for some modus vivendi among themselves as they enhance their engagements with China and Russia, and to a great extent, even India. Rapprochement between Israel and some Arab countries like the UAE and Bahrain and Sudan and Morocco have paved the way for new power equations as India, Israel, the UAE, and the USA become engaged in a new Economic Quartet. The winds of change are visible as the Russia-Ukraine crisis casts a new shadow on the regional dynamic. The quest for strategic autonomy is distinctly on the horizon.Over a dozen distinguished authors and regional experts have delved deep into the evolving security scenario in this compendium. This is a book that clinically examines critical security issues in West Asia, offers insights and affords solutions and some policy choices for India in a dispassionate manner.A must-read for policy makers, students researchers and even experts.
