Book SynopsisAnna Borshchevskaya is a senior fellow at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy, focusing on Russia's policy toward the Middle East. In addition, she is a fellow at the European Foundation for Democracy. A former analyst for a U.S. military contractor in Afghanistan, she has also served as communications director at the American Islamic Congress. Her analysis is published widely in publications such as Foreign Affairs, The Hill, The New Criterion, and Middle East Quarterly.Trade ReviewBorshchevskaya… offers one of the most durable sentences in the history of American foreign policy: “The United States threw the Kurds under the bus." -- Thomas E. Ricks * The New York Times *Skillfully lays out Mr. Putin’s approach to the Middle East... [And] a useful primer on how the Russian government sees the world. -- Samuel Sweeney * Wall Street Journal *Borshchevskaya’s book is one that has been long overdue—this is perhaps the only book available that looks exclusively at Russia’s intervention, its causes and consequences (both internationally and domestically), and what it means more broadly for Russia’s geopolitical position. “Putin’s War in Syria” is a detailed and fascinating… [it is] exceptionally enlightening and fills in the significant gaps in media coverage and popular analysis. -- Joshua Huminski * Diplomatic Courier *No one knows the subject matter better than Anna Borshchevskaya, whose research is extraordinary and insights into Russian high strategy are absolutely on target. * Ambassador James Jeffrey, U.S. Special Representative for Syria 2018-2020 *Anna Borshchevskaya has written an important account of how Putin not only avoided getting Russia into a quagmire in Syria as President Obama predicted, but has instead succeeded militarily at low cost in part through leveraging the actions of others (including Iran and Hezbollah) operating there. She also shows that Moscow has succeeded diplomatically at managing differences and improving relations with Washington’s traditional Middle Eastern allies during its campaign in Syria. Her eminently readable book should be read by policymakers, scholars, and students. * Mark N. Katz, Professor of Government and Politics, George Mason University/Nonresident Senior Fellow, The Atlantic Council *Anna Borshchevskaya is Washington’s go-to expert on Russian involvement in the Middle East. Her years of research have resulted in a thoughtful, comprehensive, and authoritative account of the evolution of Moscow’s relationship with Damascus and of Russia’s military and diplomatic intervention in the war. Borshchevskaya is a keen observer of the Kremlin and of Vladimir Putin’s approach toward great power competition in the Middle East, a region in which Syria is presently ground zero. Putin’s War in Syria is an indispensable volume for policy practitioners and analysts alike. * David Schenker, Senior Fellow, The Washington Institute for Near East Policy, and former assistant secretary of state for Near East affairs *The full tragedy of Syria is laid bare in this remarkable book, and the central role of Vladimir Putin in the creation of seemingly endless destruction and death is clearly identified. The first step for accountability begins with accurate history, and this volume will be a central part of it. * James Stavridis, Admiral, US Navy (Retired) *Putin's War in Syria is an eye opening examination of Russia as it relates to a much bigger world than NATO and central Europe. Born in Russia, Anna Borshchevskaya opens our eyes to Russian ambitions and gives us a slightly different view of how it sees itself in relation to the west and the US. In Syria, Russia re enters great power competition - outside of its former “sphere of influence” - and now owns a seat at the table in the Middle East. Does the west get it? Does the US get it? Borshchevskaya does a superb job of annotating what we have missed and how Russia has used all the tools of national power to keep the west one step behind on the chessboard. A must read for those like me who tend to keep Russian in a European context. * General Phil Breedlove, US Air Force (Retired) *Putin’s war in Syria makes an important contribution by explaining Russia’s policies in the Middle East through its identity, history and modern realities. * International Affairs *Borshchevskaya’s book offers a very useful summary of Russian policy in the Middle East which is both very readable and very analytic… One I would strongly recommend for use in college courses on Russian foreign policy. -- Robert O. Freedman * Slavonic and East European Review *Table of ContentsINTRODUCTION SECTION I: Russia and the Middle East Chapter 1: Soviet Union in the Middle East and the Afghanistan Intervention Chapter 2: Russia in the 1990s Chapter 3: Putin Returns Russia to the Middle East Chapter 4: Russia-Iran-Syria Triangle SECTION II Putin’s Syria Intervention Chapter 5: The Military Campaign Chapter 6: The Domestic Campaign Chapter 7: Diplomatic Efforts Chapter 8: Moscow and Regional Actors Chapter 9: Russia and Syria’s Resources Conclusion Index

  • Once Well Beloved Remembering a British Columbia

Royal British Columbia Museum Once Well Beloved Remembering a British Columbia

Book Synopsis'Our well beloved dead who died that we might live.' In the town of Merritt, in British Columbia's Nicola Valley, stands a granite cenotaph erected in memory of 44 men who died soldiering in the First World War. Those men came from a Nicola Valley that had been suddenly and dramatically settled just a decade before by the will of railway executives and the arrival of British colliers. Twelve of those soldiers are the subject of these pages--and through them, we meet the men, women and children of the Nicola Valley, the dead and their survivors: the people who built and were built by a Canadian community that was also distinctly British Columbian.Trade Review"For many small towns around the world, World War I was a seismic event, and the Canadian town of Merritt in British Columbia's Nicola Valley is a prime example. A town that even today only has a few thousand residents lost forty-four men in the Great War, and Michael Sasges tells a few of their stories in Once Well Beloved . This short volume includes five stories covering a dozen soldiers whose names appear on Merritt's memorial cenotaph: the first three to die; an Indigenous soldier; those who fell in the battle of Vimy Ridge; a soldier who earned a Distinguished Service Order; and the last three to fall. These accounts rely on contemporaneous local newspaper reporting and other archived documents and read like a string of newspaper features; some were previously published in that format. Numerous photographs of Nicola Valley soldiers, from studio portraits and family pictures to group shots of them in uniform and stills of their memorials, are a welcome addition. So are the quotes from soldiers describing their experiences at the front, taken from their correspondence to loved ones back in British Columbia. These help to further humanize and differentiate the soldiers. Sasges provides additional context throughout the book, detailing what Merritt was like at the time, the kinds of careers the young men left behind when they shipped off, and how Canada's obligation to fight as part of the United Kingdom helped to prompt discussions of independence. He also tracks how some of the men's families arrived in the area and, through the story of Tommy Charters, explains the added challenges faced by Indigenous soldiers. Once Well Beloved is a well reported historical document about the great impact of World War I on a small Canadian community." Jeff Fleischer, Foreword Reviews

  • Jim Bridger Trailblazer of the American West

John Wiley & Sons Jim Bridger Trailblazer of the American West

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisA mountain man of the American West, straddling the fur trade era and the age of exploration, Jim Bridger lived the life legends are made of. His adventures are fit for remaking into the tall tales Bridger liked to tell. In a biography that gives this outsize character his due, Jerry Enzler takes this frontiersman’s full measure for the first time.Trade Review“Jim Bridger has tapped sources uncovered since the publication of earlier biographies. It is an engrossing story of the life of one of the greatest “Mountain Men”, when all is considered – and the most able scout and guide. It is full of details, excitement, and the history of the period: the fur trade, the army and Indian conflicts, the places [Bridger] discovered, including Utah’s Great Salt Lak, the new trails found in this new age of exploration and so on…Jerry Enzler’s book provides the minutiae and vast range of Bridger’s life and if there is at some places a eulogistic element then this is very much in harmony with a sincere appreciation of the man.” —English Westerners Society“Jim Bridger’s story is as big as the West he called his home, and now we have a biography that captures all the nooks and crannies, nuances and tales of Bridger. Just as Bridger left no area unexplored, biographer Jerry Enzler has left no stone unturned in writing Bridger’s life story. This is a remarkable book about a remarkable man.”—Candy Moulton, author of The Mormon Handcart Migration: “Tounge nor pen can never tell the sorrow”“Jim Bridger’s is an exciting and significant story, and Jerry Enzler tells it in exceptionally well documented detail and readable prose. Enzler sets forth new dimensions of Bridger, never before published. This is lasting biography at its best.”—Robert M. Utley, author of After Lewis and Clark: Mountain Men and the Paths to the Pacific“In the most reliable, best-researched, and most comprehensive biography of this western trailblazer, mountain man, army guide, and fort operator, Enzler offers readers a valuable reinterpretation of Bridger’s remarkable life.”—Jay H. Buckley, author of William Clark: Indian Diplomat“..it is biographies like Jim Bridger by Iowa historian Enzler that we need more of on our shelves and in the university catalogues…For scholars, researchers and buffs of the history of the mountain men who helped shape the West, Enzler’s Jim Bridger is one of best biographies published in recent years. His literary style is highly readable, he provides a clear and detailed path to understanding his research and conclusions through his annotated endnotes and a thorough bibliography…Will this be Enzler’s only foray into mountain man history? Let’s hope not. He is an excellent biographer and historian, and we would all benefit from more books from the Iowa author.”—True West Magazine“This volume is now the most extensive of Bridger biographies. It reads easily, provides new information on Bridger as trapper and guide, and reveals a good deal about his ambition, energy, and memory. Altogether a delightful read.”—Oregon Historical Quarterly“Enzler leaves the reader with an appreciation of just how remarkable Bridger’s life was in the development of the American West.”—Overland Journal “Jerry Enzler has produced a solid, reliable, sympathetic, and quite readable cradle-to-grave and life-and times biography of the legendary frontiersman and American original, Jim Bridger.”—Missouri Historical Review“An extensive and definitive biography of Jim Bridger, a character almost larger than life in his time, is long overdue. Jerry Enzler has provided us with the next chapter in scholarship about the early fur trade era. This book deserves a place on the bookshelf of all those interested in an exciting period in American history.”—Nebraska History

Book SynopsisThis remarkable biography and edited diary tell the story of William Ellis Jones (1838-1910), an artillerist in the Army of Northern Virginia. One of the few extant diaries by a Confederate artillerist, Jones's articulate writings cover camp life as well as many of the key military events of 1862.Trade Review“Witty, candid, and informative, the diary illuminates the harrowing experiences of an artillerist in the Army of Northern Virginia. Constance Hall Jones has performed a valuable service by making it available to scholars and lay readers alike.”- Michael E. Woods, author of Bleeding Kansas: Slavery, Sectionalism, and Civil War on the Missouri-Kansas Border “This book is not a dry chronicling of daily life in the ranks. Rather, Jones used his diary as a confessional, digging deep in his interior world to confront war’s absurdities, and reminding us that scores of Civil War soldiers were deeply introspective when it came to the killing and dying of war.”- Peter S. Carmichael, author of War for the Common Soldier: How Men Thought, Fought, and Survived in Civil War Armies “Jones’s compelling portrait of her ancestor takes us on a sweeping journey from his family’s origins in Wales to Industrial Richmond to the fall of the Confederate Capital and the making of the Lost Cause myth, all the while breaking stereotypes of the ‘typical’ Southern soldier.”- Gregg D. Kimball, author of American City, Southern Place: A Cultural History of Antebellum Richmond “As lush with literary allusions as it is sharp with critiques of military life, the diary of William Ellis Jones epitomizes the soldier’s plight- the relentless sickness, deprivation, and discipline- as well as the small comforts of friends, drink, and reading.”- Kathryn Shively Meier, author of Nature’s Civil War: Common Soldiers and the Environment in 1862 Virginia Table of Contents Acknowledgments Preface 1. Book SynopsisFocusing on the continued terrorist threat by jihadist groups, such as Al Qaeda and ISIS, and homegrown violent far-right and far-left extremists in the West, Terrorism and Counterterrorism investigates this form of political violence in a historical and contemporary context. In this comprehensive and highly readable text, renowned expert Brigitte Nacos clearly defines terrorismâs diverse causes, actors, and strategies; outlines anti- and counterterrorist responses; and highlights terrorismâs relationship with the public and media. Terrorism and Counterterrorism introduces students to the fieldâs main debates and helps them critically assess our understanding of, and our strategies for, addressing this complex and enduring issue.New to the Seventh Edition: The new chapter 3 reviews the history of terrorismâboth domestic and international, whereas the new chapter 4 analyses the terrorist landscape in the third decade of the 21st centuryâincluding the transnational links between violent far-right and far-left violent extremists. The discussion of religious terrorism in chapter 5 ends with an added section about QAnon as religiopolitical cult. An extended section in chapter 7 is devoted to the increasingly militant roles of females in violent far-right extremism. The revised chapter 10 starts with the withdrawal of U.S.-led troops from Afghanistan and an account of total costs spent on the post-9/11 war against terrorism before discussing the counterterrorism strategies of presidents G.W. Bush, Obama, Trump, and Biden. The failures and successes of the U.S. intelligence community in efforts to prevent terrorism at home with relevant data and case studies are new features in chapter 12. Book Synopsisnational security, Gleis and Berti provide a comparative analysis of their histories and political missions that moves beyond reductionist portrayals of the organizations' military operations.Trade ReviewWithin the past six years, Israel has fought one war with Hezbollah, the Party of God, and two wars with Hamas, the Islamic Resistance Movement. What are their roots, histories, ideologies, and tactics? Joshua L. Gleis and Benedetta Berti skillfully explore these issues in a fine primer. Canadian Jewish News Solid analyses of these two Islamist national resistance movements, both of which-notably Hezbollah-demonstrate a kind of strength that is lacking in more secular organizations and constitutes a new kind of challenge to Israel. Choice As Joshua L. Gleis and Benedetta Berti argue in Hezbollah and Hamas: A Comparative Study, a first-rate account of their respective development, Hezbollah and Hamas have evolved into important players in the Arab-Israeli conflict, and will continue to play this role in the future. -- Sheldon Kirshner Canadian Jewish News Valuable as an introduction to the background and structure of these organizations. -- Yehudit Barksy Israel Journal of Foreign Affairs While Hamas and Hizbullah have vastly different origins, they share a common adversary: Israel. As the groups become increasingly relevant to US national security, the authors provide a thorough overview of their histories, ideologies, tactics and futures-combining scholarship and primary sources in their analysis. Vogel tackles head-on the conventional wisdom regarding the biological weapon (BW) threat, successfully, challenging assumptions that have gone largely unexamined by the broader biodefense community... The diversity of views enriches and enlivens the book, and the contributors make a convincing case that it is an issue demanding a wider audience. -- John Delury Global Asia The authors suggest that, since sticks have failed, carrots should be tried more consistently and more imaginatively... The argument presented is ingenious, and if, as suggested, it is associated with proposals for a nuclear-weapon-free zone in North East Asia it might also go some way to easing the damage done by DPRK behaviour so far to the global non-proliferation regime. -- Gerald Clark Asian Affairs Pyongyang is well on the way to mastering the technologies it needs to build a deliverable nuclear weapon. But the expert contriutors to this volume argue convincingly that little will change when North Korea crosses that threshold. The retaliatory capabilities of Japan, South Korea and the United States are already sufficient to deter Pyongyang from attacking anyone with a nuclear weapon, and North Korea already has enough military power to deter anyone from attacking it. -- Andrew Nathan Foreign Affairs Richly detailed and logically laid out, Moore's book is an excellent analysis of North Korea's acquisition of nuclear arms and the consequences to its neighbors. Midwest Book Review This detailed, well structured and researched overview [is] the most comprehensive and even-handed of anything currently available. -- Kerry Brown Asian Affairs Key for China analysts and those who focus specifically on China's defense industry will be to identify well in advance those early warning indicators that will allow us to determine the extent to which real change in the industry is occurring, and how to determine how much of an impact it is having on China's ability to close the defense technology gap. This book helps to advance that conversation by providing a number of ways to look at [China's] defense industry in comparative perspective, which will be of value to anyone seeking to answer these questions for some time to come. Book SynopsisIt provides a novel argument about how peacekeeping works and further insight into how international factors affect domestic politics as well as how international institutions affect democratizing efforts.Trade ReviewA solid assessment recommended for military and political science holdings alike. Midwest Book Review Arturo Sotomayor's new book does something simple, original, and very important in peacekeeping scholarship. Instead of examining what peacekeepers do or do not do in the field, and whether or not they are successful, Sotomayor looks through the other end of the telescope, to examine the countries that contribute those peacekeepers to UN missions... Sotomayor's book has set the nascent subfield of peacekeeper contributor studies on a firm and intellectually rigorous footing. His book is to be highly commended to anyone interested in the changing dynamics of global militarism, the international use of force, and the unintended consequences and paradoxes of liberal internationalism. -- Philip Cunliffe H-Diplo With its different focus, [The Myth of the Democratic Peacekeeper] is a welcome addition to the literature, and its conclusions should give pause for thought. -- Astri Suhrke International Peacekeeping A careful, systematic, and ultimately persuasive critique... Ultimately, Sotomayor does just as much to expose the quandary of peacekeeping as he does to highlight the contingent effects of peacekeeping. -- Craig Arceneaux Political Science Quarterly The argument and evidence in The Myth of the Democratic Peacekeeper significantly advances understanding of the effects of participation in peacekeeping on civil-military relations in sending countries... This book represents a significant contribution to a growing strand of literature...
